In today's pop culture, The Brady Bunch has risen to an almost celestial level of importance. It's now the quintessential 70s sitcom, and has been mentioned amongst the greatest sitcoms of all time.
However, if the show was so era-defining and great, why did it last for only five seasons?
After all, a lot of sitcoms that existed during that era went on for far longer. If The Brady Bunch was so good, why was it short lived?
The answer to that question isn't so straightforward, and even the showrunners would have found it difficult to give a straight answer about why The Brady Bunch was cancelled.
But the fact that the question doesn't have a straightforward answer doesn't mean it doesn't have an answer.
And in this video, we'll be exploring the sitcom together and will be finding out why it only lasted for five years when it had the potential to last for even longer.
First off, what was The Brady Bunch, and what made it such a great sitcom? Why did it capture the imagination of its viewers in the 70s, and why does it continue to capture our imagination even today?

The death knell for the Brady Bunch came in 1972 when it eventually couldn't compete for the Friday night audiences with another sitcom; one that didn't require a laugh track and was truly hilarious: 'Sanford & Son'.
If Robert Reed had known how iconic the show would become, he would have probably felt better about his role.
I grew up in the 70's. Kids loved the show.
I was showing my daughter how we lugged stacks of books all the way home from school. Book bags were not even considered. Wonder why we couldn’t think outside of the box and invent book bags..maybe too much T.V. Lol!!😂
My feeling is that most of The Brady Bunch viewers were almost exclusively kids in 1969 and predominantly kids and teens in the first half of the 1970's. According to the memoir Growing up Brady, the show aired Friday nights at 8:00 PM, a time slot given to family-oriented shows "with very young demographics" (as described in the book). When the TV networks think of ratings, they think usually of adult viewers, hence the apparently low numbers for The Brady Bunch
no one mentions the fact that the kids were growing up and rapidly not being kids anymore. in the last season, Greg finished high school and was going off to college. Susan Olsen (Sindy), was 12 years old when the last season was filmed, although she was still playing a character that seemed to be much younger. had the show continued for a few more years, the nature of the show at least would have had to have changed significantly. I think it had really run its course by 1974 and ended at the right time
I watched your video through and you do make some pretty interesting points. However, there is also another reason that wasn't mentioned by you. The main reason why the series was canceled was because the kid cast wanted half of the episodes of the sixth season to be musically themed. Starting in 1970 with "Merry Christmas from The Brady Bunch" and ending in 1973 with "The Brady Bunch Phonographic Album", the kid cast sang during much of the series run and some of the songs from the albums were sung on several episodes and also, the animated spin-off "The Brady Kids". ABC did order a sixth season, but when Sherwood Schwartz heard through the grapevine (so to speak) that the kids wanted over half of the episodes in the sixth season to be musically themed, he was THE one who pulled the plug on the series for that reason. This is according to the liner notes on the 1993 MCA released CD compilation; "It's a Sunshine Day: The Best of the Brady Bunch" and also, after the polite resignation of Chris Knight, who played Peter, which is also mentioned in those same liner notes. If you see why the second spin-off series, "The Brady Bunch Hour" was so short lived (it ran for nine episodes, including the pilot, which was actually a TV special called "The Brady Bunch Variety Hour), that is why Sharwood Schwartz didn't want the series to continue because the musical aspect was only meant to be temporary, not permanent. The Brady kid cast weren't very good vocalists, although Barry (Greg), Maureen, (Marcia), Eve, (Jan) and Florence (Carol) had pretty good voices, they weren't the greatest vocalists, even though Florence had a country hit song with "Born to Say Goodbye".
Robert Reed's personal life also had a lot to do with this. Although his personal life, as an active Homosexual/Gay man, wasn't public knowledge and wouldn't be until he was dying in 1992 of colon cancer, the producers actually felt uncomfortable with him playing a devoted father and husband on the series, when he was Homosexual/Gay. His private life never became any fodder for tabloids or anything related to them, but whatever was done to continue to keep that secret, it worked. Everyone in the cast, including Florence and Ann B (Alice), alongside the kid cast knew about his private life, but it never became an issue on the set of the series as it was never discussed among them. Plus, according to Florence, he was a very unhappy person when he wasn't in front of the camera. In front of the camera, he played a happily devoted father and husband, but out of the camera range, he was the exact opposite. He battled depression and numerous other issues during his life until his death of colon cancer in 1992. Although, according to the medical records of him having traces of HIV in his bloodstream, they were not strong enough to kill him, and that colon cancer was what killed him.
I just wanted to share some additional information. I also subscribed and even clicked for notifications. Thanks for making and uploading.
Thanks for the additional info and support!
I thought he died from aids, thank you for all that information. I wish more people knew. I always felt bad for him. He was gorgeous at the beginning of the Brady Bunch but I hated the perm and mustache he wore further on.
Seeing him on those first few episodes cemented him in my mind as to what a good father looked like.
He was so handsome and Florence was beautiful too. I just never liked Jan. I guess she was the scapegoat of their family. 😅
The musical aspect of the Brady Bunch Kids that you described also appeared in the book Growing up Brady
The kids actually hired a agent and the agent made demands to Schwartz. This sort of took Sherwood by surprise and he was hurt a little by the kids. A few of the kids didn't fell right about the agents demands and they never signed the contract. Thus they stopped their singing and touring but the damage had already been done. The other reasons are well known, the kids were getting older, they were tired of doing it and of course Reed hated the show with a passion although he loved the kids.
I’m kind of glad that they ended the Brady Bunch after five years I mean could you imagine the Brady Bunch going on without the father in the picture? It would’ve failed anyway just like Good Times I mean when they got rid of James Amos the guy that played the dad James Evans who also was a formally trained actor the show went downhill from there. It’s kind of hard to replace the main character in a sitcom and not be successful
I think part of the reason the show couldn't last as long as others is the Brady kids were already pretty far along when the series launched, especially the oldest ones, already in their teens. And, All In The Family and Sanford & Son were sitcom game-changers when they arrived on the scene. I'm sure ABC and Paramount were aware of those two facts, and realized the series couldn't be sustained, so they wrapped it up after the 5th season. And of course Reed was ready to move on.
It wasn’t cousin Oliver that caused the show to be canceled which is too many people blame him for.
They needed more Peter.
🥰
The pay was too low and the ratings weren’t good enough to keep the advertisers happy.
I think the Brady bunch should be on TV again I love the Brady bunch because they are good kids and the family is very good especially Cindy Brady I think she's the cutest little girl that I ever seen and Marcia Brady well what you says Marsha Marsha Marsha but that's okay sisters are really a really cool but the Brady bunch they have a good group and they sing very very good so don't ever stop The Brady bunch I don't I didn't say nothing wrong with The Brady bunch so please come back on the TV maybe on channel 2 or me TV I would love to see them everyday especially on a cartoon and don't ever leave and stop putting them alone a light well I love them very much indeed from Rose m a r y and Alice is good too especially her boyfriend but anyhow think about it people don't let them get away from us I know all the kids and everybody who loves The Brady bunch even I do don't let him go just don't let them go thank you from Rosie and they are y g a u n t thank you
maybe spend less time posting garbage and more time studying basic level English wiriting skills/grammar... ugh
It is , actually, on tv. Although off and on, it can be seen Sundays on MeTV.
Your voice sounds like the character Lucy on Big Bang Theory lol
I understand Reed had signed a 5 year contract...but I wonder before signing it Why did he agree to do the show, if he saw a script before auditions....and thought the show was stupid then why go audition for it....and just find something else more interesting to do and for him more rewording.
M-O-N-E-Y
Fate.
I don't want to play nicely. This show is just another idiotic, old TV show. The worst characters are the eldest girl and the eldest boy. And I think their singing made the dead roll over and dig themselves deeper.
I think Sherwood or his son wanted to make the Brady kids a Partridge Family copy. Or the kids begged them to start a Brady TV band. They were trying at anything to keep the series going.
Empty pots and pans!!!😮😮 Cousin Oliver ,shoud have stayed with CHIPS, he just wasnt right for the Brady Bunch!!!
He was bloody annoying! Between that character, the increasingly silly storylines, and then the episode of 'The Kellys', the scriptwriters knew the Brady Bunch had run its course.
Did you no your woman who played the house maid was gay.and so was Robert Reed .Rest in peace to him and Alice ?
The fact that it lasted this long was amazing because I like to call it the GAY-DY bunch because they were so stupid and obnoxious
Nahhh
PRONOUNCE: IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Painful to listen to you say the words " Brady Bunch" The enunciation.... good lord.. Just listen t the theme song maybe?
She says it fine, where’d you grow up?
I heard the Greg character had a sexual relationship with his his mom Carol Brady on the sitcom the Brady bunch
