I liked Mr furley better than the ropers and Terry was better than Chrissy so it was getting better if you ask me. The ditzy blonde (Chrissy) was getting boring and the ropers weren't really a big part of the gang. It seemed mr. Furley hung out more with the group and he was silly. Terry was smart and clever.

Why ruin what few wholesome childhood memories that many of many of us older adults have. There are no more wholesome children's show anymore, they all (or nearly all) show or promote some sort of violence or foul language. Let us keep our fond untarnished memories of the Captain Kangaroo show.

As stated by another poster, Captain Kangaroo never had as high of ratings as other networks’ news programs that had aired at the same time. So by the time the 80’s came around, CBS put less emphasis on the show and more on news programs to compete with other networks. Also to note…around that time Bob Keeshan had suffered a major heart attack requiring bypass surgeries which sidelined him for a good part of 1981. The earlier time slot move as well as the cut to 30 minutes also included a set change to a futuristic space lab, as well as a name change to “Wake Up” which alienated audiences. Many affiliated stations didn’t even bother to air the new program. In 1982, the show reverted back to the older “Captain’s Place” set as well as the original name “Captain Kangaroo” but only appeared on Saturday morning before the cartoons came on. (The show by that time actually aired reruns of Hanna Barbara cartoon shorts such as “CB Bears” in place of the older animated segments such as “Toothbrush Family” that used to air in earlier seasons…to try to draw audiences who were “toon-ing” in for Saturday morning fare. But by this time the show had run its course. CBS finally cancelled the show and reruns of later seasons were aired on PBS for a few years following. After “Captain Kangaroo” ended, Bob Keeshan was not quite done with CBS yet. He hosted “CBS Storybreak” for a few seasons before finally retiring.

Show didnt fail b/c somers left all all. It went 9 seasons which is pretty standard. Most shows that are popular go 10 years. Terry was a good 3rd roomate after the failure of cindy snow. They cast fast a 19 year old girl w/ zero acting experience & they wanted her a chrissy clone the ditzy blonde. Terry was a grear 3rd they had her bright a nurse well spoken. Plus chrossys last season where her egotostical husband took over demanded she get paid 150k an episode more than joyce & way more than ritter.

Somers had a great idea! Merch on the show. Imagine figures of the main characters & a little apt set ! I recall my 1st boyfriends little sister had the full house set & all the figures lol.

The issues Captain Kangaroo had with CBS between 1980-1984 was CBS started to have their own morning news show and had to move Captain Kangaroo out of its time slot. Because CBS wanted to be competitive with NBC's "Today" and ABC's "Good Morning America". So, Captain Kangaroo got moved to earlier time during the week that didn't work out, then was moved to Weekends only for the last several years of its run.

Had the opportunity to him when he came to our local TV station where I worked as a cameraman in 1994. I was born in 1955 and loved that show. He was a guest on our morning show and everybody in the station, including reporters, producers,salespeople, engineers, people that worked the night shift came to meet him. A really nice man. I'm tearing up just remembering it.

Total BS. The show remained strong in the ratings for almost it's entire run, and only plummeted in it's final season.

The flashing of vignettes from Hopper’s work is frenetic and irritating during the narrator’s dialog. Disappointing

Do your own research. Everything is out there, including the court documents about him being accused and found guilty of child molestation. I loved this show as a child, but when so many children come forward and accuse one person of molestation, you kinda have to listen, regardless what good memories the person gave you. Keep in mind all of the priests and pervert uncles and grand-dads from that time that no one knew were pedos and all of the parents that helped to cover those secrets up. As for keeping his legacy for the children of that era, we have all grown up and are capable of getting passed it. He was found guilty and sentenced to more than 60 years in prison back in 1998. Lucky for him he was already old and would soon die in 2004.

I think part of the reason the show couldn't last as long as others is the Brady kids were already pretty far along when the series launched, especially the oldest ones, already in their teens. And, All In The Family and Sanford & Son were sitcom game-changers when they arrived on the scene. I'm sure ABC and Paramount were aware of those two facts, and realized the series couldn't be sustained, so they wrapped it up after the 5th season. And of course Reed was ready to move on.

Michelle Phillips is a truly despicable excuse for a human being.

They broke up for many reasons. Sleeping around wasn't it. They were poor businesspeople. When they split, years later they were going to be sued unless they made another record to fulfill their contract. Its a bad record, but interesting how disconnected they were.
