I love story ideas like that. My friend and I years ago were discussing historical interpretation of ancient sites and artifacts as done by historians and archeologist. I posited and joked that half the stuff we attribute to ancient beliefs and culture may have just been art and comic books to them and that in 2000 yrs after the apocalypse that they would think the history and art museum was actually a temple to a pantheon. And as we were talking a guy came out of nowhere and start bowing in front of the museum in a worshiping manner. I was like hmm guess I'm right.

Check out Kyle Hill: he did an episode on this confirming all of this. It is possible for something to be hot enough to slice thru anything swiftly but it would be so hot that it would not just be impossible to hold, but to be within something like 100 meters of. And if the mag field is containing that heat to spare it’s holder instant disintegration than it can’t be hot enough still to cut.
Also, that mag field would be so powerful that it would also be exceedingly deadly. The strength of the field needed to contain such heat would easily be deadly out several meters; not to mention make the weapon completely unwieldy in any metallic space (ahem! Spaceship ahem!).
    Still want one.

Kyle also gives some details on the "graphic and severe" Simon mentions at the end. A light saber would not cleanly slice through a person, cauterizing the wound. The incredible heat needed to "cut" through a person instantly would actually cause the flesh - which is 70-90% water - to _violently vaporize in an explosion,_ hurting or possibly killing the wielder.

7:15 I Think perhaps Simon needs to see Hacksmiths work here on UA-cam. They most certainly are trying to create a lightsaber. At the moment they have a plasma torch based device that uses a very expensive nozzle to create laminar flow to shape the blade and hip mounted backpack for the gas and a few chemistry tricks to get the right color.

Light-saber isn't insanely hot, it is insanely tiny!
The fat glowing plasma we see is only the visible part of a microscopically thin 'blade'.*
The blade is less than a micron in width; some say it's closer to zero...divide energy by zero, cut a world...
Assumptions about how much material is being vaporized in a swift cut are way off; cinematic license and all that.
The hot melty-bits we see on cuts are plasma burns incidental to the actual cutting.
*Dim recollection of Star Wars novel in which an Officer notes 'microscopic cuts' adjacent to burns in Storm Trooper armor as evidence of light-saber damage, rather than a vibro-shiv.
    Nerd on, dudes!

If you're going to go with a science-fantasy weapon, consider the power sword from Warhammer 40,000. The sword has a special generator built into the weapon that generates a field of plasma around the blade, so when you hit something the blade bites and cuts into the target, the plasma field begins scorching and melting through the target, and the power field discharges into the target, breaking molecular bonds. You also have the plus of having a metal blade, in the event your power cell blinks off, you can still chop into the target.

Agreed the question about how long until we have them is a weird one. We technically already have all the basics we need except for 1 major thing. Stability. Until we can get the stability of the blade to stay let alone even a cuting edge. we will not have a lightsaber nor even a true proto saber but just a big torch. Even if we get the cuting power and heat to the same level of a blow touch and/or welding tool which would put us close to the level of cutting a lightsaber can do it wont matter if the actual blade falls apart once it touches anything. Thats why its so weird as all we need is really just one piece of tech. A piece of tech that can straighten a flame to a solid or semi solid. Get that add it to the proto saber pack or hilt and boom actual lightsaber/proto saber

I saw the first three of the Star Wars series, I enjoyed them but wasn’t so absorbed that I felt inclined to follow the rest of them. But I also never saw it as anything but an entertaining fantasy, it baffles me that people take it seriously enough to try to drag it into the real world. Like Simon says, it’s freakin’ magic. Unlike Simon, I enjoy fantasy and tales of magic, but while I enjoy divorcing myself from reality for an hour or three, I don’t confuse any of it with actual science.

The problem is they all can or do exist, just not the way people think they do. Even Magic in itself, as we look at it is ridiculous, but exist in science and methods, that when explained, is just science. Lightsaber will never be real as it is portrayed, unless that " magic" crystal from that fantastical source, is found. Phasers as well. The tricorder is a real possibility. Red shirts always die because of plot. The transporter would simply kill you and it would suffer from the same flaw as light sabers, it would require a massive amount of energy to operate it.

3:00 The Phantom Menace kind of hint at this with them cutting through the door to escape the gas. It was taking him time to work his way around that door and the actor was putting on a good show of making it look like it was taking him some serious force to push the "blade" through the metal.

  • @goldencyclone4984
    @goldencyclone4984 2 роки тому +3

My assumption, just based off the existence of vibroblades in the Star Wars universe and their relative similarities in functional damage to lightsabers, is that whatever field is used to project the plasma and keep it contained in the shape of the blade also vibrates at a rapid pace, which would allow for the quick cuts seen in the franchise. Pure speculation of course but it'd explain the cutting power.

    • @goldencyclone4984
      @goldencyclone4984 2 роки тому

@Richdragon Well yeah, I know vibroblades are just vibrating metal, but that was my point. I think a good idea of how it could work is that it's a thin beam of charged antiparticles, (antimatter). When the antiparticles and particles in the air interact they annihilate each other in the time it takes the antiparticles to travel approximately one meter. This process creates the illusion of a one meter glowing "blade" and the hum of the Light Saber. The particles of any object that passes into the antiparticle stream is annihilated (cut) along the path of the antiparticle beam. All light saber antimatter beams have the same charge, so they repel each other.

When people first began imagining traveling to the moon one of the ideas was a train that could somehow cross the heavens.
So, I guess people back then could have asked, "When will trains take us to the moon?"
Never, of course but what they didn't understand was that by the time our technology could take us to the moon, trains were obsolete. Same with video phones. By the time the technology was capable of video phones, we didnt really want to use phone anymore, video or otherwise.
I predict this is what will become of faster than light travel, by the time we are capable of the technology it will no longer be required. We will be able to teleport to any point in the universe, not travel the distance.

The light sabre, what about a room temperature cooled superconductor hovering about a metre away from the grip with a reflector of some sort on the bottom side pointing back....
Superconductors lock onto magnetic fields, it would have to be a pretty good Superconductor.
Sounds like a good place start.

Fun fact: hyperspace in Star Wars is magic as well, the “scientists” of the Star Wars universe don’t even know how it works they just use certain hyperspace routes, I like to chalk all the fantasy elements of Star Wars up to “any sufficiently advanced science will be indistinguishable from magic”
(I still don’t think that’s a decent excuse for Leia gaining the ability to survive in the vacuum of space, but for the sake of Star Wars fans sanity let’s forget that film happened)

actually, you can survive space for a little bit, until you suffocate, assuming you have the presence of mind to exhale all your air upon entering space. Check out Nerdist and Because Science on youtube.

In all fairness Leia took a bolt of superheated plasma directly to her unprotected arm and instead of her arm melting off she basically just said "ouch" and got on with it. Lucas already established her as being supernatural in RotJ, I don't see why space ought to kill her anymore than superheated plasma would.

I never managed to get into Star Wars (except for that one incredibly bizarre animated Ewoks movie that we rented from blockbuster several weekends in a row…weird that such a thing existed). Anyway, I did learn recently that George Lucas has a love of westerns as well as samurai movies, and that went into the creation of the Star Wars universe. In effect, he took several different settings and combined them into something that was, by many standards, pretty unique. I think that’s kind of cool, in a way, but that’s just me.

Note that an very high powered battery is also an bomb if it discard all the energy at once something it will do if destroyed.
This is why battery fires are an concern with current batteries and this will be much more of an problem with an battery holding as much energy as gasoline as hold more energy than dynamite and it would all be released at once if destroyed. It might replace high explosives if safe enough.

Since we’ve got lightsabers in this one, can we get a Death Star video?
*Edit: if you carefully examine a lightsaber you can sometimes see a “blade” point. It’s more prevalent in the Clone Wars TV show, as the animation style is more lenient.

Anti matter, likely positrons, in a magnetic bottle in the hilt. Through tiny magnetic conduits out through small holes in the shaft. A small amount leaked out the holes when active will make light as it contacts electrons in surrounding air. Sensors in the blade control the release of more positrons when the blade contacts something. The anti matter in a blade is the same charge as in another so they repel each other when they hit each other. Doesn't sound that demanding. Just expensive to get the positrons and make the magnetic equipment to control it. That's where the crystals come in. They're like powerful rare earth magnets no contain the positrons.

Reply to force who retracted his reply. I suppose he realized his mistake. He claimed antimatter annihilation produces gamma rays, and would be a suicide machine. All light is produced by antimatter annihilation. Depends on the energy of the pair. Gamma rays are produced by high energy annihilation. But that doesn't mean only Gamma rays cause damage. Infrared causes heat damage, Ultraviolet causes molecular damage. Neither of those are anywhere near the energy of Gamma rays.

In regards to the power source. Disney had it set where the crystals would power it. Originally, there is a powerful battery near the bottom half of the hilt and it generates the energy to create plasma that would be focused through a minimum of two crystals (one for amplification and the other to refine the shape which also produces the color).
But overall, Lightsabers as a whole will be practically impossible to make as seen in the films.

Another fantasy setting Warhammer, added plasma swords. They need a backpack, heat resistant armour, and can set enemies ablaze. But that wouldn't do as it would make Star Wars 18+ and Disney wouldn't have that.

The amount of energy necessary to produce, project and shape the plasma at a constant flow to be a melee weapon could be made into a projectile weapon that would be far more potentially destructive by shooting lances of plasma in much shorter duration beams.

Even star wars showed that a gun is more useful than a lightsaber. In the expanded universe theres a planet where jedi engage in combat with local species who dont use energy weapons but classic metal bullets, which cant be repelled by lightsabers. In essence jedis were having trouble defending against bullets

The Force is *sort of* necessary to use one *safely* , because the magnetic field is so strong it affects gravity or something, plus, the blade is almost completely massless, so balance is a serious issue.
But yeah - all the downsides of a lightsaber are pretty much taken care of with the Force.

Even converting the entire mass of a light sabre hilt into energy (e=MC^2), I think it probably still falls short of the energy requirements to continuously fuel a blade at the several million degrees of heat necessary to cut through solid steel in an instant. (...never mind what happens in an atmosphere if anything sizable is heated to "several million degrees"). Meaning: Impossible physics.

IIRC in the star wars Canon the first proto lightsaber was created 25,000 before the events of the original trilogy. If that's anything to go by, it's going to be quite a while before we see a properly functional lightsaber.

lightwave bending and oscillation thru gravity control all in the space of 3 to 4 feet, oscillation intensity like laser but from the outer hilt to the tip of supposed blade than bends back toward the hilt centre in an endless loop possible only when one can create gravity wells like micro blackholes, first hinted at in SW Source Book,a piece of exposition literature sold some 30 years ago

LOL - if Simon is like that with Lightsabers, I would love to see the opinion on the "Dark Saber" - another equally unrealistic weapon. Or the Death Star or even Snoke's massive flying wing. The thing that gets me with SW tech is how quickly they can build these massive ships and yet still retain a level of secrecy that it surprises the rest of the galaxy . "OMG, where did that planet sized spaceship come from? Didnt see that one coming...."

That's what really bugged me with the latest trilogy. A giant space laser carved into the equator of a planet, and nobody noticed? Any creep with a telescope would have spotted it. Not to mention the massive resources the First Order must have to bounce back from it being destroyed, along with countless spaceships.

I think someone also estimated the cost to build a Death Star weapon, it was more than the entire earth’s economy combined. In order to have the financial resources to build a Death Star, every resource on an enitire planet as far as money and raw materials would have to be utilized. The labor cost can be absorbed by using slave labor but the amount of metal to build essentially a small hollow moon is staggering.

Love the videos Simon, but please please please ask the editors to drop the music when you are speaking. Your diction is very clear- which is very helpful, but there is such loud music in some of your videos that it gets very hard to hear. Possibly my poor speakers - but I can't be the only one with poor speakers or bad hearing. If the music plus talking is a deliberate decision, is there anyway we could interest you in a music free version of the audio? Even if that ended up just being an audio only cut with all the graphics missing as well. Would be a shame, but at least we wouldn't have to keep rewinding or staring at the subtitles.
