  • Mastering music used to be seen as a dark art, but with the help of some generous mastering engineers, this art and science is becoming more and more attainable for us all.
For this interview I sat down with Nicolas de Porcel, a diamond selling mastering engineer who is working with the biggest artists in the game right now including Roddy Ricch, JID, Kendrick Lamar, Muni Long, Cardi B and more! Nicolas shared his philosophy behind mastering records, he shows us his mastering studio and the gear he uses, and he talks about the plug-in chain that he uses for mastering as well. Nicolas a.k.a. Dep even gave us some great books that we can reference to learn how to master ourselves. I will link them below.

Appreciate the interview. Dude made a good point when he said he isn't using references and is trying to make new things.

I don't use references either, i think that's being lazy...

@@ashaolujimi3751Referencing is very critical when you’re learning both mixing and mastering and getting more experience over time. He’s able to go without referencing because he’s been doing it long enough to understand the fundamentals and the rules as well as how/when to break them

I truly appreciate this video. Mastering has been where I want to be for many years. I have did a tiny bit of mastering when first learning PT 9 (and still am learning PT 10+ yrs later 😂). I'm more like... I here what needs to be done sound quality wise (from over 25 years of DJ inner ear development), but as a Electronic music producer (whole different ball game), I find myself doing things a lot based on what I feel (which is 60% correct) vs what I can learn (the other 40). Just naturally doing the music, and correcting as I go no matter how long it takes... self taught. What was mentioned in this video by "Nicholas", about sending music out to be mastered is my biggest issue. I know how I want my tracks and tracks from my label to sound, and I also at times have heard a track or two I've produced and listened from someone else's mix; like, "was that my track??" I gotta fix that LOL. I figured out on my own that it all begins in pre production and how post production & the mixes play out. Masterers can not fix what you did wrong on your track prior, they can only enhance what you give them to the best of their ability. I do plan on School for Audio Production and Mastering (if there is a Mastering course as well).
I refuse to allow someone else to do something for me in music production/editing etc, that I did not give my VERY BEST to do or try first 💯

I feel the opposite of the hardware vs digital with mastering I'm in the box and what he said in my opinion is untrue but everyone has there own opinion.
