    Just heard this for the first time in over 40 years, I'm in my 50s now and wow, tears are trickling down my face. It's amazing how a piece of music can do this to a grown man.
    Brings back lovely memories of a a kinder, simpler time, at home with a 'bad cold' off from school with my dear late mum checking in on me. What a privilege to have grown up in such a loving home. Mum and dad both gone during the last few years. Thanks for sharing this beautiful music.

    I think the reason why so many of us feel so sad when hearing this iconic theme tune is that it represented a time where as children we felt safe. Mum probably stayed at home to look after us while dad brought home the money. We had real friendships, not "friends" on social media. If I wasn't well enough to go to school I always watched Crown Court with mum. Mum and dad died a long time ago now but some music always reminds me of them. We didn't have any money to spare but we never went without. I'm so grateful that my parents put their children first, althought we didn't realise that at the time.

      Hindsight's a demon at times. I found out only recently how much my mother had stuck up for me in the game of family politics, and realised how much she'd gone without so I could have stuff. Now she's in a care home thinking that I'm my father and I'm too ill myself to repay her anyway.

      It's called Distant Hills. I got hold of it on a CD: Top Dog: Retrospective of Classic TV & Radio by De Wolfe Music. A collection of themes less often included in collections.
      Three tunes from Vision On, Top of the Form, Angling Today, George and Mildred, Farmhouse Kitchen, there's even Roobard and Custard.
      Van Der Valk is on there too - "Eye level"
      Distant Hills is the final track and to me it has the most powerful "back to a lost time" factor.

    Hells Bells. Straight back to 1976 or so. I got impetigo ( horrible infectious rash) when I was in the first year of infant school. As my parents worked I spent the days at my nans and she used to watch this. Think it came on after lunch. Funny isn’t it....I can remember the opening and closing themes like it was yesterday but ask me what I had for dinner three days ago......! I know seeing things through the eyes of a child is totally different than that of an adult, but crikey the UK seemed a much nicer place back then. Take care everyone.

      The UK has the advantage of being able to quickly re-shape itself. That bypass is so neat! The Rover is somewhat dated. But the harpsichord of this theme tune is the best possible actual use of a harpsichord.

    • @truckingscouser
      @truckingscouser 3 роки тому +2

      I remember watching this at the time and even back then thinking it was a sad tune, I was a sensitive soul, my mum had a record called "Little Rosa" by a fella called Red Sovine (look it up, it's incredibly sad, Like "Honey" by Bobby Goldsborough in parts) I was so traumatised listening to that song (my mum used to play it all the tiime) I got so saddened from listening to it, I snapped the record in half, I wasn't quite 10 years old at the time.

    • @fionamaddock3984
      @fionamaddock3984 3 роки тому +2

      @@truckingscouser Aw I love Bobby Goldsboro, I know the song you mean. I love his other song 'Summer The First Time' too, it's one of my faves. It makes me feel so nostalgic somehow, yet I don't know if I was even born when he released that song, or I probably was only just born. Me and my sis were also very sensitive to music as children. We're singers too and from a very early age, I knew I loved music. Sounds like you're the same. I literally would get a lump in my throat if I heard emotional music when I was a kid x

    • @truckingscouser
      @truckingscouser 3 роки тому

      Fiona, you need to give Little Rosa a listen, its heartbreaking, the version by Red Sovine, although I can't seem to find a version that sounds like the one my mum had. He also had a song out called 'Teddy Bear' that's also a tough listen :-(
      Another song that also gets me, is Excerpt from a teenage opera (commonly referred to as 'Grocer Jack') by Keith West, oh my life, when the kids start singing... :(

    This footage shows clips from a Crown Court story called 'Marathon,' broadcast in 1975. It was among Zoe Wanamaker's earlest TV acting work. This story was unusual in it's format, being a 75 minute film, rather than the usual three half hourly episodes. ITV shown it in the evening, not the normal lunchtime 1.30 slot.

    Just the same as everyone else here it seems, this is such a lovely, sad and nostalgic tune. I'm now 50 and reminds me when I was ill off school and if my Mum was shopping in town, and would drop me off at my grandmothers house. It always seemed to be raining. My grandmother had a black and white TV in her front room, she had a nice sofa and I'd snuggle underneath an old grey blanket she had, watch this, and wait for Mum to bring me back a curly wurly from her shopping :)

      That's the only time I ever saw it. :D
      I think they should bring it back, early evening though. The real jury would be an even more interesting experiment now, seeing as prejudices have got much worse, less blatant with laws, but definitely much worse underneath. That's probably why they'd never bring it back, for accusations against what would be obvious differences of punishments dependent on the particular diversity of the defendant.

      I've only ever seen it on one compilation "Top Dog" from De Wolfe records.
      There were a few instrumentals in the 70s that became hits. This was the b side to Eye Level (Van Der Valk).
      Sleepy Shores, the theme to Owen MD was another.

    Crown Court was made by Granada and shown on the ITV network from 1972, when tv hours were deregulated, until 1984 when it ended.
    I remember it being on at 1.30-2.00pm, after the News at One.
    It's nice to see Richard Wilson, John Barron and Zoe Wanamaker in this video-it brings back many memories!
    Thank you!

    This is called 'Distant Hills' by the Simon Park Orchestra. It was the B-side of their No1 hit single from c1973, 'Eye Level' aka Van der Valk. The opening of Crown Court was heralded by the fourth movement of the Sinfonietta by Leo's Janacek- it seemed quite formidable and caught the viewer's attention . Those were the days 😃

    theres a part of me that wishes i was born in England in the 60s as a white boy whos dad was a railway engeneer and my mum taught music at the local primary school. and me and my two brothers a sister went to the lake with our dog fluffy to watch old mr tillerson angling from his dingy while eating his cheese sandwiches and listening to the bbc..id sit in the sun occasionally stealing a glimpse of Mildred the most beautiful girl ive ever seen playing with a kite with her dad.and when i got home to my mums kitchen the smell of freshly baked scorns would fill the air while this song would filter through lounge telling me dad was home watching crown court

    This makes me nostalgic for the days when barristers and judges were sensible, deep-thinking people who carefully sifted and weighed evidence in order to arrive at a just verdict. Not like the slick politically and financially motived hacks we have these days.

    This piece called Distant hills was used over the end credits. They used something bit more sinister for the opening and I always thought this tune helped sympathise the outcome whichever way it went!
    Just for the record Benzade1, although in the 1.30ish slot, Crown Court appeared on ITV, not the Beeb!

    I have these on DVD - nailbiting TV and truly quality drama! And I couldn't agree more - the revenue from the calls would easily cover the budget and MORE some, as it is indeed cheap TV (a single location, small cast etc). Still have a physical jury in there of course for authenticity but putting the decision in the public's hands would be a BRILLIANT touch!!! I know it's become a cliche, but they really don't make 'em like this any more, sadly...

    Hadn't heard this tune for years, heard it on Scala radio this week, like everyone of my generation watched with my mother who passed away in 1975 me aged 9 ,yes it was the b side to van der valk, but also apparently the jury were members of the public and were picked randomly from Manchester where the show was made.
