Bro you’re a telepath. The second an issue pops up, you upload a video explaining the problem and how to fix it. Keep up the work brotha!
Haha glad to help
Man, I really appreciate you for making this video🫡
I am having this issue with my B58 7 series. There are so many questions I had in mind which you addressed clearly like which coolant to use & where to find the coolant reservoir and the common issues which causes this coolant leak.
My mistake was when my car would say low coolant I thought it was for the small one not the big one, never checked the big one till few mins ago she was empty. I learned something today from this video thanks alot you saved my 230i
2017 540i, had the low coolant message yesterday morning for the first time. Main tank was bone dry. Filled it up, 2hrs later there was a large puddle under the engine. Took it to the dealer, failed water pump. Only has 40k miles on it too. Thankfully under warranty.
Oh my god, thank you so much for your video. It's been 2 days since I tried to find out why I have 2 coolant tank. Even at my BMW dealership they didn't know.
Change dealership ASAP
Great video. Great channel for B598 engines.
This was very very helpful. Thank you so much for sharing.
Excellent video. Thanks for the tips and information sharing.
Great video! Please make a video on what to look for when shopping for a used F30 340i.
Great video!
Spot on tip at the end about the coolant cap. I have the same crusty residue around the thread, which means the cal is the culprit and is leaking from there!
Thanks buddy!👍👍😉💪
any update? did this work for you? i have the same residue around my cap cover and wonder if this could be the cause
Very helpful video bro...thanks...lots of additional info also..
Thanks for this video…much needed information.
I've heard about that coolant cap issue as well. I had the same low coolant error come up on my car several times after topping it off. Ended up taking the car to the dealership and they replaced the water pump. Great video though! You're like the encyclopedia for B58s!
Is that sorted the issue? Were you loosing much coolant when you had an issue with the water pump? Is that was under the warranty?
holding my sides for the Die Hard clip... 😆 Thanks for the info btw, it's very helpful.
Thanks for posting your experience! My filler cap is leaking as evidenced by white crust around the base of the filler hole so, I’m replacing the o-rings on the cap instead of buying a new cap. I’ll update after a week or so with results 👍🏼👍🏼
Update. I put two size 18 orings to replace the old flat ones. A week later and my cap is no longer leaking.
Thanks a bunch for this great video 👍🏼👍🏼👊🏼
Great video great explanation. Thanks.
Thank you, this is very helpful information.
Hey man, thanks a lot for you detailed explanation. Yesterday I got that message and I toped off the coolant. I went for a drive after that and I start smelling something burned after a short drive. Any thought off why this is happen ? The message is gone tho
Very useful video. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you sir. Very helpfull.
Hey man so been a few days now. I live in Michigan and every morning I wake up with the car cold, and the refill coolant sensor is going off but levels are normal. After driving for a bit, my JB4 tells me my IAT is above 100 and the sensor usually turns off. I’m guessing that means the whole thing needs to be replaced.
great video. Thanks
Do you have any tips or suggestions on opening the second reservoir cap (expansion)? Mine is stuck and pretty difficult to undo. Thanks!
One thing to add... the smaller reservoir is for your intercooler. The intercooler is built into the intake manifold on the B58. Another loss of coolant can be your intercooler leaking and sucking coolant in with air. This will also cause white smoke issue.
This is only related to getting a low Coolant message on iDrive. The error is not linked to the intercooler system.
Will the small tank low coolant sensor faulty and getting low coolant faults on idrive?
@@chongyeouwei3433 just now seeing this. The small tank doesn't have a sensor unfortunately
@kern417 thanks for uploading this video I'm subscribing right away.
How often does the ext. engine coolant need to be refilled?
I got the low coolant warning message, so I filled it to the maximum mark, two days later I take my car for an oil change to a local shop and they checked the antifreeze plus the external engine coolant (is this a separate reservoir?) but no leaks or problems reported.
Please answer this if you can, my 2017 X3 needs around 300mL of coolant every 6-12 months it's @66K bought it used from the dealer 4 years ago @15K. How normal is that?
No leaks visible so I will follow the steps of this video and hope to find some answers. Thanks in advance!
Losing coolant is not normal. It may be evaporating past the cap.
Yo i recently ran into a problem with my 2018 340i idk if to be concerned or not but every time I do a couple of pulls nothing crazy the center console seems to warm up at first I thought it was because of the heat but it still does it even when cold any suggestions?
Good info thanks.
Question for you, where can I find the coolant temp sensor? He dealer told me a mouse chewed the wiring for the sensor so they would need to replace it. They tried charging me 1800 to do so. I am capable of doing it myself as long as I know where it is
Hello Kern, my BMW 230i has two tanks as in your video, the bigger tanks has a normal level coolant, but a small tank on the lower right has coolant disappeared, I tried to top off with distilled water, but it still leaks in somewhere until I can't see level of coolant , let me ask you. Can I drive for 35 miles from home to dealership to let them fix the coolant system?
Thanks for your reply!!!!
Great video. I am thinking of getting a used 340, and I noticed you made a video about the PCV issue and now a video about the coolant. Would you say this is a reliable engine for the most part with a few minor issues? Are there any other issues with this engine?
Yes there are other potential issues but overall it is reliable. There aren't any common catastrophic failures that cause failures like engines, turbos, etc. They're also more common on early models (2016s) but you can see things like this are a quick fix if it happens to you.
Great video
my second one the little one cap is full even on top of max almost full cap, so what should i do to take it off untill between min and max or ?
I have an alert from my 2013 650i Gran Coupe. Message: "Engine coolant level too low. Risk of engine damaged! Top up the coolant at the earliest opportunity, see Owner Handbook. Caution: risk of scalding!"
Do I put the coolant in the engine coolant or the intercoolant? Please help
What about the replacement intervals for the intercooler coolant system? Does it use the same BMW coolant as the engine side?
1:15 reminded my of the water puzzle from Die Hard 3.
Thanks for this, could you specify the BMW Coolant number, for example i just exchanged my Mini Cooper S for a BMW M240i and i have a litre of blue BMW Coolant 87 for the Mini and i think it is the right one for the M240i (makes sense since these are both modular petrol engines from the same family). Folks don't seem to add the product number details, and of course i think there are actually two numbers used to describe the same product here. Also, i read that de-ionised water can also be used for topping up, and is actually better according to some. Would you say this is accurate?
pouring coolant in my bmw and its not holding the coolant at all, all spills right out , what should i do?
what is that thing in the left of cap? you must open it with keys or ?
Great video I had coolant being burned up and BMW diagnosed it as a faulty oil filter housing because I needed it right away they hit me for 3 k you explained what the large tank is full of of what is the small tank for and do you need to top that off also really appreciate the video thanks
If it's low then yes you need to top it off
This was very informative thanks man. Our 2018 X3 21k miles gave low coolant message. I topped off the large tank with bmw oem blue coolant. It took a little over 1 quart. I did not dilute it down just added it straight. Any concern for doing that ? Thanks
A quart is a lot. When you have a chance I will use a turkey baster to take some out and add some distilled water. It probably isn't a big deal now if it's winter where you are, but it's best to have closer to a 50-50 mix.
@@kern417 thanks for the reply I might do that. The big question is how the hell did a quart disappear lol will have the dealership check it out also.
Aye bro thanks for the video. My main expansion tank is fine. (Blue coolant and correct level) but the smaller coolant tank is over filled with a clear liquid. (Smells like coolant but it’s not blue). So far I’ve never gotten any warning lights and the operating temperature has been normal and consistent. If you’ve seen or heard of this before I’d really appreciate some advice on if I should keep running it or take action. (Not under warranty btw)
It may just be more diluted so it looks like water. You won't get any warnings from it being overfilled but can use a turkey baster to suck some out for peace of mind.
Going through this problem with my 2021 M340i . Going to the dealer Monday 🤦🏻 there is a leak I saw the coolant dripping underneath the car
Hey Kern, totally unrelated but I had a quick question for ya. I was servicing my transmission just a couple of hours ago and guess what? I overtorqued and snapped one of the transmission pan bolts. It's bolt #1 according to ZF's torque pattern. Do you think I'm screwed and need to take my car somewhere to get that screw out/the job redone or do you think I'd be fine without that screw for some time.... Thinking about just monitoring the fluid levels and I'll probably call a mechanic tomorrow but I wanted to get your opinion... Thanks!
I would recommend getting it fixed but if you're diligent about checking to make sure it's not leaking then you may be able to get away with it until you can get it fixed.
Thanks much for this. The main coolant reservoir on my 340i is just at the min right now and I had just chalked it up to the extreme cold we had here in the Midwest since there was no warning in iDrive. My E46 330i seemed overly sensitive to coolant level, so I expected a warning if anything was amiss. I've also noticed little spots on and near the reservior that don't belong, so I highly suspect that it's the coolant cap.
It could be the reservoir as well. That was leaking on my X5. A pressure test will confirm and some dealers will do it for free/cheap if you don't have the pressure tester.
@@kern417 sounds good. As soon as the snow melts, I'm going to do coils & plugs so ill check it out then. Thanks a ton for your vids as they are super helpful. The last motor I really learned well was the audi 2.7T APB in my 01 S4 so I've been trying to learn the B58 now. Your stuff is really informative.
@@kern417 Hey...just wanted to say big thanks for pointing this out. I replaced the cap on my main coolant reservoir, topped it off and it hasn't dropped a bit since.
Over this past weekend, I replaced the stock airbox with a CTS Turbo Intake (despite all the recommendations that the stock airbox flows fine) and I really like the sound. I was pulling 4th gear to redline yesterday morning and threw a 20E120 - Crankcase Ventilation Host disconnected code though. I checked all the fitment, tightened down the hose clamps a bit more and it hasn't come back yet. I haven't had a chance to pull 4th to redline again however. I got a couple questions if you have a chance to answer:
- Does the crankcase vent cycle back into the turbo inlet?
- Is there something I could log to get more insight on what is causing the code?
- Is installing a catch can worth it on these engines? I've heard the PCV system is adequate to where an OCC isn't really necessary on stock turbo....thoughts?
On my B5 S4, the OCC was an absolute must because that PCV system was junk from the factory.
Thanks for all the great content.
Literally right after I hit send on this, I saw you have a vid on the whole PCV system. I'll watch that now.
Thanks man. I also have a video on the code you got if you check my channel. It's a very common code to get with an aftermarket intake.
The crankcase vent has to recirculate before the turbo, but our cars do not have a tendency of pushing a lot of oil. So for the most part a catch can is not needed.
Thank you
Thank you.
can NO coolant in b58 Cause the car not to crank at all?
Thank you Great video. What is the smaller reservoir for? I heard it was for the A/C system.
Intercooler
@@kern417 I have a 2018 430i F33. Is it the same 50/50 mix? I took the car into BMW because the A/C would cool for 2 minutes and go warm. I thought I had a leak or other issue. Service manager told me the intercooler was low and then the compressor doesn’t lock in. Now 12 months later it’s happening again. I’m off warranty now and hoping it’s that again. I could do it myself.
Yes
@@kern417 thank you!
I had this coolant message pop up and my b58 was overheating. I put some coolant into the tank and drove it to the dealership where they said that they coolant hose snapped and not feeding coolant correctly into the engine. They replaced the hose and the issue was fixed.
glad you got it sorted. i'm sure other areas will be identified as common for coolant loss as our cars go up in mileage.
I get coolant loss in my small reservoir not sure if it’s because I’m running “sport mode cooling for intercooler” on mhd but it’s like I’m topping it often , the main reservoir doesn’t move at all even after running it hot , any ideas to what the issue may be ?
ua-cam.com/video/_9ARdzz8PiI/v-deo.html
Is it normal for the coolant in the big coolant tank to turn clear? It used to be blue/green but now it turned clear. Should I be worried? I had this issue about a 1-2 years ago and I thought the previous owner put the wrong coolant since it was a yellow/clear color, so I took it to bmw to have the coolant flushed and refilled but now it’s back and this time it’s more clear than yellow. The smaller coolant tank is the right color it’s just the big tank that’s giving me a problem. Could it be something I have to be worried about? The temp doesn’t get high just under 250°. I’m not sure if this helps but It’s a 17 340 with 34k miles stage 2. I’d appreciate the feed back!
it may just be diluted with too much water
Would the pressure test failing...and no signs of leaks indicate turbo or head gasket? Just got this issue this morning. Once again thanks for you help. Gonna top it up, do a pressure test and go from there.
Most likely indicates cap
@@kern417 thanks dude, bought another one waiting to arrive. Problem is since topping up Friday...checked this morning and coolant is below min again...think gonna be a bigger issue than the cap. Still can't see a leak
Thank you for this excellent video, i have a 440i , i had the problem of lack of power you are talking about, then the fan that starts every time i stop idling. I went to bmw, they changed the water radiator. Now when my car reaches ist normal operating temperature, my fan starts at low speed, then it won't shut off again unless i turn off the engine. if i let cool for 1 hour then i restart it then the fan also starts. After 1 hour /2 hours of use, the fan switches to an even higher speed when stopped, the engine speed rises to 750rpm instead of the usual 650rpm. I had never seen this before even in high heat, i sspecify that this is seen without the air conditioner of. i don't think it's normal. Can you help me about this. excuse me for my english
Can you scan for codes
@@kern417 i had the code 20A201, on this engine it's normal the fan runs all the time at low speed.

Hey bro! I’m picking up my b58 in a few days, any eye ball tests I should do before picking it up??
Check Coolant levels and ask for maintenance history
@@kern417 thanks bro :)
Thanks a lot!! can you show us how to flush the cooling system, please??
Sure. I've talked about the steps in my other videos piece by piece but I can put it all together in one video
@@kern417 Joining! Yeah would be great!
Great video. Where did you get your new cap?
Dealership
Hey, I have a question sry for bothering. I have b58 and mppsk, sometimes during winter there is a lot of smoke coming from exausth, yesterday engine took a second or two more to start ( otherwise no warning, plug sparks changed a year ago, i read the frequency should be set different for tuned cars) thank you in advance
You'll have to work through it to diagnose if there's an issue. But it's normal for a car to take a little longer to start in the cold
@@kern417 today the engine light poped up, and car is noisy, smokey and its shaking, probably bad combustion. Its still under waranty will se 🙂
I rec'd 1 low coolant message since July 2017 and it's been probably 2 years. Went to dealer and they filled it up in the drive thru bay, they didn't add that much.
Good point, some people have reported that it was simply underfilled at the factory
Another superb informative and well explained video. As said above, the smaller reservoir is for the large front intercooler (that you upgraded in a previous video), air to water intercooler in the inlet manifold and to the turbo itself.
I have a 2017 M140i (UK) and in 18 months of ownership I’ve had to top-up the larger engine side coolant reservoir with approximately a quart full of distilled water, tiny amounts at a time as I check it regularly.
My thought is evaporation via a faulty reservoir cap.
One question though- to refit my cap (stone cold) takes extreme effort,I certainly can’t just spin it on until the locking point like yours? (The threads are clean and no tell tail sign of leakage around the reservoir top🤷🏼♂️)
The small reservoir is for the intercooler system only. The turbo and engine run off of the larger reservoir. Like I mentioned in the video, the small reservoir doesn't have a level sensor so it doesn't throw an error message for low coolant. That's why it's not included in this video.
You may have a faulty cap If it's difficult to put on with the threads clean. There shouldn't be any excessive resistance.
@@kern417 thanks kern,I was told the larger reservoir was engine and smaller one the turbo side of things. I’ve no doubt you are correct though, would make more sense to use the larger volume of coolant to help in cooling the turbo itself and keeping the other circuit to concentrate on IAT 👍.
As for the reservoir cap on my m140 it appears a known issue here in the UK. Some have even been applying a very thin film of lube spray around the last few threads which I won’t be doing.
I’ll take the issue up with BMW themselves.
All the best and keep your great information and content coming,
Ant.
I have a ‘21 M5 Comp (S63) with 9k miles. I had to top off the coolant twice since I had the car (2 yrs this Aug). I took the car to BMW since my oil change was due and they ran a pressure test and stated they detect no leak.
This sound right?
Also, my car has two places to add coolant; one for the engine the other turbos.
It may be the cap itself
@@kern417 Yes, possible. I will keep an eye on it. Thanks!
Did you notice immediately that the new cap had girthy o rings and the stock cap seemed flush? Or is it just me. My stock cap is nearly flush where the o rings should be protruding/sealing.
I did not notice that
I got the warning message too topping up doesn't hold any fluid in the tank, I can't see a punchure in the radiators. The big tank is dripping coolant badly from the bottom right of the car do you think it's the radiator or something else?
May be a crack in the tank itself
Question I’ve check the smaller tank and the coolant that’s in it is different from the one that’s in the larger one, when I say different I mean it’s clear is that serious issue?
Some people see that for some reason. I'm not sure why
Just bought my cap today
Have 2018 bmw 330i. Got coolant level low sign. It wasn’t that low. But i have observed engine is becoming hot now. But it’s normal on the dashboard as it should be. And whenever i turn my car off even after just 15 minutes drive. I always observe the coolant is boiling inside. Means my car is boiling coolant. Engine also seems hot than regular but it’s normal on the dashboard as it used to. So why coolant is boiling??? What should i do?

I just experienced this in my 2017 540i. Should I remove my bm3 stage 1 tune before taking to the dealership?
It would be a good idea but most times they just top off your coolant in the service bay

The 50/50 mix should already be mixed with distilled water
@@kern417 oh okay appreciate it boss so it should just be ready to be poured and topped of then correct. It’s cause I had seen one guy get the 50/50 bmw mix then bought a gallon of distilled water poured out half then filled the other half of the gallon with oil
My coolant level was fine and then a month later I got the warning. Had to add 32 oz total of the 50/50 mixture. It was dry. I don't know how it went from being fine when I took my car in for regular maintenance check up in July and then bone dry a month later. Seems strange to me.
What was your problem? Mines having the same problem however coolant is being lost more rapidly

It shouldn't unless there's a leak
Awesome
When my car was under warranty, the dealership did all these steps and said you have no leaks, it is normal for this engine to lose a little coolant. The nerve of these people. They should have changed the cap under warranty if all else failed. I check my coolant every so often after my initial warning and i too see a little white crust around the cap. I suspect it is my culprit and because it's cheap, I'll start with replacing the cap (based on the dealer saying no leaks exist, pretty new car still)
