Not saying this is a good thing but personally I think it's a good step. Iphones are bought only by the top 1-2% of households in India so an extra 20-30k doesn't really matter that much to them especially since they're buying an expensive item as a status symbol. So it's a good way to generate revenue and then provide Production Linked Incentives to smartphone companies to build in India therefore creating employment, FDI and less imports
Yeah, since India is not a black box like China in terms of human rights, we see these issues before hand. Apple, being Apple, they'd want to fix these for public image reasons.
To be fair essentially, every single smart phone company on the market is terrible with human rights when it comes to manufacturing. To pretend it’s just one is letting an entire industry get away with it.
It's a complex issue with no one clear answer. The human rights issues are a problem but there's a reason these manufacturing plants have thousands of employees and no shortage of demand for jobs there. If you lived in abject poverty the conditions of working in a factory like this may very well be an improvement over your other choices. This is not to say that we should excuse the issues, or that we shouldn't all be willing to pay more to improve worker conditions. But if you do some research into it you will find places like Bangladesh where working in a factory is seen as a luxury job that thousands line up for days to try and obtain. It beats living on an arid plot of land, subsisting on only the meager food you can grow in the horrendous soil. By working one of these grueling jobs a lot of people secure futures for their family that would otherwise not be possible
I mean you india is not china, check out what happened to an iPhone assembly factory in Bangalore few months back when workers issues were not resolved.
Samsung is actually made in India, Apple is like assembled in India. That's why prices are not low or same in India. But Samsung has managed the prices pretty well.
It doesn't benefit customers in India. Earlier, when iphone was imported we were paying $1000 because of import taxes. Now that tax is gone because of local manufacturing, Apple didn't reduce the price to even match the American price of $800 because they want to maintain the "iPhone= luxury " status in India
That’s not how it works. There is no luxury status associated with iPhones in the west. Of course in a country of poor , where 90 percent people have nothing but 3 times food and maybe 5-10k to spare. Everything is an item of luxury. The 20 k phone is also a luxury for some , and for some a 100k phone is an item of luxury, it’s all relative. For some a Gucci tshirt is a luxury, for some a Levi’s jeans is a luxury, so don’t generalise luxury, it’s all relative. And Apple never saw itself as a luxury brand. The reason why you not just pay more on a 100k phone , or a 10k phone are the absurd taxes. Last time I remember, paying 20k in taxes for a consumer end device , that might last 2 years, it’s a horrible proposition even for the people who can afford.
Thus, if you are planning to buy the Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max, you need to know that you would need to pay a total of Rs. 40,034 as tax. Let that sink in.
Apple is not price gouging. Price differentials between different regional markets always comes down to government taxes and duties. Australians pay the same as Americans do for iPhones. 🇦🇺
Once coming out, it won't going back. I'm glad for India acquiring the productivity, it's the first step, more and more high tech industry will flow into India after this initial move. Congrats!
Our biggest problem was we were not making good use of our younger population which is very huge. In china , the government through its amazing policies was able to turn its huge young population into a skilled force. But slowly we are catching up. It is Very long road ahead.
Not happening. India has too many obstacles hindering it's progression i.e. politics, caste system, corruption, unstable government etc. You just name it.
You haven't mentioned the reason completely. 1. China is growing old and the workforce is getting expensive for Apple. So keep the profit margins same they are moving to countries like India and Vietnam. India has low wages still and moreover with India comes the added advantage of no IP theft and a democratic solution to problem. With China it is a dream.
I'd say it's mainly the remote, but still existing possibility that China invades Taiwan, or does something odd or crazy. Apple would be instantly screwed. Hence, they don't want to keep all their eggs in one Chinese basket.
Remember that apple aren't produce the phone, it's foxconn. And even thought they shift their production in India, they still need import many part from china
Hopefully it doesn't cost much. Before flying to Dubai, buying an iPhone there and then flying back to India was cheaper (including trqvel costs) than buying an iPhone in India directly.
Dubai will still be cheaper(in most cases) because the taxes here in India are very high. Of course, the difference between the Indian and Dubai price won't be as big anymore.
its because you pay 18% sales tax on phones in India and UAE refunds sales tax to tourist, Export duty not Sales tax is imposed on export which is 10%, effectively its zero percent as factory setups are build in SEZ get export duty refunded, even electricity and other infrastructure is cheaper in SEZ, concept copied from West china.
You had an point on the issues faced in India, if India would work on it and resolve it then it is an opportunity to get more and more "made in India" products.. Hope the co.s and the Indian govt move faster towards that... Thanks Cold Fushion..
India has a huge Demographic advantage. If we and our govt. manage to think wisely and implement good reforms. india would be the next china. sadly that isn't happening
TATA has shown interest in iPhone manufacturing recently. If that happens then a lot of supply chain for apple manufacturing will switch to India. And TATA has the best employee welfare reputation in India, it is considered equivalent of govt job in India. Even if they pay lower salary chance of employee agitation will be minimal.
Get over yourself. Working in these factories is wildly better than a lot of other jobs available to unskilled people. You see "working for $20 a day," I see "Working for above minimum wage and providing for my family." Don't expect factory workers in countries you know nothing about to work for $100k/year. Think about this the next time you see a LiveLeak video from a South Asian worker.
There were a lot of complaints from workers when the factories started. Thankfully, Indians have a right to protest. I think the issues are sorted out now.
Recently India became the fifth largest economy in the world. The workforce is very young, cheap and eager to work. Also if Apple wants cheap yet effective manufacturing, they have came at the right time and place. If successful, other companies will look to diversify manufacturing into India. Overall win win for all the stakeholders.
India was 5th largest economy back in 2016. Rupees converted into dollars when calculating GDP numbers, not for pounds. After Brexit, India become 5th largest in dollar term, and 3rd largest in PPP term long ago. Now, India has blown past 5th, and probably 4th largest economy.
The irony is that the base iPhone 14 variant is more expensive in India than the Pro varient in the US. This is tragic on many levels. Coz, India is not a rich country. America is. It's due to customs duty levied. And for that to be waived off a certain percentage of above needs to manufactured in india. Currently it's only being assembled
Let me explain it quickly . They assemble the final product in India. That’s all. All the components like the electronics circuit board and camera modules , display etc all of them are imported. It would have been a different story if everything was made in India. They are just assembling it here. And every component they import , adds to the expense. It’s all a game of duties and taxes. Brilliant step. Now we need manufacturing of low end semiconductors gradually moving to the top of the line ones. Also a massive push is required for production on solar wafers in India but 2 good things : A lot of manufacturing is moving out China & a large portion of it is coming to India
Semiconductors are made in Taiwan, which is not under the control of China. Also semi conductors are far to complex and advanced, they require technology and manufacturing facilities that is not present in any country other than Taiwan. Even if low end semi conductors were produced, making the jump to high end semiconductors will require decades of research and billions of dollars in funding (USA and China have been trying for years and haven't even reached 10% of the semiconductor advancement that Taiwan has achieved). Plus, the people of Taiwan are unlikely to share their methods of manufacturing and technologies as it is one of the most profitable sectors of their economy and the one of the most important things preventing China from launching an all out invasion.

I like how almost everyone just goes "human rights issues aside..."
Gotta have that iPhone!!
It was not the main focus of the video

Thats riduculous, so they are just keeping the profits ?
@@nboy7 yea

1. China is growing old and the workforce is getting expensive for Apple. So keep the profit margins same they are moving to countries like India and Vietnam. I'd say it's mainly the remote, but still existing possibility that China invades Taiwan, or does something odd or crazy.

Dubai will still be cheaper(in most cases) because the taxes here in India are very high. Of course, the difference between the Indian and Dubai price won't be as big anymore.
@@rohanb0110 Taxes were high coz it was imported but now when it’s being manufactured in india, I think there might be less taxes involved

@@user-kc1tf7zm3b you need taxes on imports to keep balanced sheets. Even though iphone is assembled in India - 90% of it's price still comes from components and none of the component is made in India thus 90% of the phone price still will get taxed - assembly of the phone even though one of most important is still only small fraction of the phone cost. I personally don't get it why folk in China or India are so keen on bidding so low on this last step of putting phone together when all the rest components are produced in factories in Korea, Japan, Europe, US where working conditinos and salaries are multifold better. You could increase assembly price twice, give twice bigger pay to workers assembling the phone, and still only add 5-10% markup on final product price. I am glad to hear that the folk in India have voiced issue of poor food and poor pay - unlike Chinese counterparts who happily come to work for peanuts - we need more people like this who demand decent conditions.
It's good that Apple is manufacturing in India but unfortunately, the prices won't drop for consumers. An iPhone is still more expensive for Indians as compared to US citizens despite the huge disparity in the standards of living.

I think the move is more a a strategic one to gain entry into the Indian Market. That's a free market that Apple has no share of due to high import taxes of the devices. Being able to manufacture in India will drive the cost of the iPhone down in India and provide Indian consumers an opportunity to purchase iPhones. It creates a stable new manufacturing hub for Apple while also opening up the last major market that they have not penetrated yet.
Actually, Apple doesn't pass on the savings from reduced duty to customers in India. We still pay the more than what the US pays for the same device. And the tax rate we have on mobile phones is about 18% which is only 8% more than the US(5-10% I'm not sure) so clearly Apple wants to squeeze more out of us.

They wanted eSIMS to allow people to easily swap service. In reality it's made everything way more complex than swapping a card in a slot.

Current Indian govt is welcoming the investors like never before. The revolt situation was created by the forces in india who work for the chinese elements not because of the food or pay which was settled later as we have a strong govt now. It is only good business to diversify your supply chain. For a company that likes to have control over its own future, it has been surprising to me that Apple had almost all its eggs in one basket (so to speak), for as long as it did. Rising tensions and the possibility of a Taiwan invasion in the coming years has forced Apple to sure up its supply chain better than what it had. In an instance where global sanctions need to be placed on China, it could be catastrophic for companies that do a large majority of their manufacturing in China.
"forced Apple to *shore up* its"
I guess workers in China are costing too much and have decent conditions now, so they have to find somewhere cheaper. Then a few years down the line Apple will produce a report on how they improved standards there after they've made enough cash.

Another insightful comment! China is moving upwards towards Japan's realm of business. Its a nice trivia to remember that before China, it's Japan who was the word's China in the 80s and 90s. Then a lot of companies moved away from Japan as its labor cost increases to China and the same is happening to China from India. Did Japan collapse after the abandonment of low cost western companies? It didn't. What more with China and its gargantuan population of market?

2. Is getting compensation from the govt.

More than anything, Apple manufacturing in India will help expand their business significantly. iPhones are the most sought after premium smartphones in India and by a long shot. Quite a few phones are imported by residents due to taxes levied, inturn increasing the price. If iPhones are produced in India, the prices come down due to govt subsidies and lower taxes, and folks will quickly transition to iPhones. India would probably have cheaper labor and more flexibility due to fewer regulations. However there will be an inherent lack of discipline which the Chinese have in droves. As powerful as the BJP is, they can't command Indian workers the way the CCP can theirs so there will definitely be lesser efficiency in production. @@momobhai3792 you have a point, but the regulations aren't really followed here at all lol
yes, it is a far stretch to think india as the new manufacturing HUB, current reality is very far from that. There is an overall lack off discipline and actual eduation level is low by international standards, which is really not the case for chinese. There is also a big lack of entrepreneurship, contrary to china where tens and hundreds thousand companies are not the facts of foreigners, but chinese themselves, and are feeding a very large part of the international consumer goods market.
How many mass product do we see from india? zero, india could nto even make a smartphone, and those products existing for inner market are very far from international standards.
Also big brands manufacturing in india are not a sign of anything, because they just bring their process and standards whereever they go, using local low skills workers on the chain mainly and few carefully selected engineers to run the production lines.
