Thank you for this demo. I had not seen - or used - a bobbin driven wheel. Do you think this wheel would be good to spin a Lopi Style yarn? Like you, I prefer a DD and Scotch Tension.
No. Double Drive wheels have one belt twisted that runs two whorls. One on the flyer and the other on the bobbin. One runs slower than the other at all times which is what allows the thread to be taken up onto the bobbin. Scotch tension wheels the belt drives the flyer and the tension band slows the bobbin. On the Irish Tension wheels the belt drives the bobbin and the tensioner slows the flyer. On the DD wheel the belt drives both but the whorls are slightly different in size and does the same thing. The DD is what I like the best. Scotch Tension wheels are also great and very good for those beginning but I think once the tension is right either is a good wheel. The one I like the least is the Irish Tension or Bobbin Driven wheel. They work but I just feel they have the least control unless you are making thick yarn then it doesn’t matter which wheel you have. DD wheels are best for thin thread to medium yarns. Scotch Tension is great for everything. Irish is great for medium to thick.
