- A Sinus infection can be miserable. Check this video out to get ideas on how to recognize one, what you can do at home to treat and prevent from getting worse and when to see the doctor!
Here's a review of the material presented:
Most common symptoms of sinus infection are
• Cough
• Congestion
• runny nose
• sinus pain and pressure
• sometimes fevers
• Drainage down the back of your throat.
Some reasons you may want to go to doctor sooner:
• Persistent fever over 101.
• Symptoms that are getting worse or lasting more than 10 days are a concern
• Symptoms that initially started to get better then all of a sudden got worse and continued to do so
Most of the time we don’t consider treating a sinus infection unless they have been going on for over 10 days or if you are having severe symptoms not relieved by normal treatments
Things you can focus on at home to help:
The first thing we can start trying are Decongestants: Now there are three main types that you can get over the counter.
a. The first is Phenylephrine- this is the ingredient that you can find in most of your decongestants that they sell on the shelf. It can help some and it is easier to get but it’s probably the least effective out of all of them.
b. The second you can get is pseudoephedrine or Sudafed. This tends to work better than the phenylephrine but its main problem is that government does control the sale of it. You need to ask the pharmacist for this one.
c. The last one is oxymetazoline, these are your Afrin nasal spray type productus. Theses are very fast acting and can work pretty well. We have to offer up a really big warning here though. You don’t want to be taking Afrin for more than 3-4 days
2. A Second group that can be helpful are taking some mucus thinners such as Mucinex. These medications when taken with a lot of water help to thin out the mucus secretions and can help facilitate a little better draining of the sinus. So look on the box and take them as directed.
3. The third thing you can do is start using some Nasal Steroids: these are now over the counter medications such as Flonase, Nasacort- these work best in trying to help keep the inflammation down in your nasal passages and sinus. These medications don’t start working right away. It takes a few days for them to start to take affect so they aren’t meant for immediate relief. They are best if you use them daily to try and prevent recurrent infections.
4. Sinus rinse- These include things like saline spray, Sinus rinse kits such as those made by Neil-Med, Neti-pot or the Navage. Use them according to manufacturers instructions.

🌹 Take some ginger root and chop it up fine or put it in a blender with water. Then simmer it on the stove, creating a light amount of steam.Rap a wet towel around the rim of the pan and form a tunnel for the steam to rise. You then breath this ginger steam.Be careful not to burn yourself on the steam..Keep your face close enough to breathe the steam but far away enough to not get burned. The ginger is cleansing and anti-inflammatory. Ginger is antimicrobial and has shown anti bacterial activity against staph and strep.Your sinuses and your lungs will love you 😻
I just watched 5 different doctors and this guy gave the best advice out of them all!!
I have had sinus infection all my life and this doctor has told me more in last 5 minutes than all other doctors I have in past. Thanks for a great video
Best regards to #drosuma for your help and support I'm free from sinus infection
Same, I am so lucky to find this video.
Did it work?@@yichenli1148
I have year around allergies and every year they got worse. This information helped me immensely.
Had recent viral infection (nasal congestion, runny nose) that differed from my usual seasonal allergies. I agree with your suggestions above. What I did differently this time was to address runny nose and congestion by taking dayquil (containing phenylephrine) as needed for 3 days. I also minimized blowing my nose (preventing viral spread). Ten years ago I had severe sinusitis which I felt during descent on a plane ride. This time, I had very minimal pain during recent plane ride. I think prevention is key, but also treating symptoms early on to prevent spread is helpful.
Wow! Excellent info. Thank You So Much for making this video.
This video is a huge public service, very beneficial to Us, normal people.
Especially how you make the extra effort to type all the info in the description.
Excellent video. I was desperate about a week ago. My common cold turned into a sinus infection. When this happens, my head feels like it’s packed with cement and I can’t breath. The pharmacist recommended Mucinex D, which has the pseudoephedrine and an expectorant in it and Flonase. I believe the doc is right. The key is to keep the nasal passages open, so you can drain it out and heal. He shared many good ideas.
Thank you...I am miserable right now....

This is the most helpful video I've seen on this subject.
Thanks! - your manner of explanation is fantastic. Glad you're in this profession.
Yip, it’s the best video I’ve seen on the subject after 10yrs. Sounds like a nice dude as well.
Pity my local doc wasn’t as nice.
Wonderful information. The best video I came across.
This was very helpful! Thank you! ☀️
Good info .. explains why , what and when . Thanks !
You were very thorough and gave me a lot of good information, thanks so much!
🙌🏻 so helpful
Thank you for absolutely helpful information DR I appreciate it 🙏🏻❤️
It's good to know I've already done all of this.
I enjoyed your medical advice since my son was told that he had an option of balloon surgery for his sinuses allergies. However, I would like it if you put more emphasis on self nasal irrigation. I do it and it's s wonderful. I got an ear and brain infection for not using distilled water. If most of us don't drink regular drinking water, why would I want to put it in my nose? Teens need to hear what is important.
It makes me feel better already when a doctor has good bed side manner
I have a deviated septum and always seem to get ear infections when I irrigate my sinuses. Flonase was the worst for me. I also have chronic sinusitis and severe allergies. I have been using Claritin D when I just can’t take it anymore ( I hate the medicine head I get from this product, but it helps). Recently started using Ocean Nasal spray. Safe for every day use and works really well! Non habit forming as well.
I hate this sinusitis, it was always a problem for me when I got sick or catched a simple little cold, and it was spanding more and more, for a long time, and can barely get help with it, now I'm on an Azitromicine antibiotic and nose congesteant treatment with hot showers and stuff like that, I hope I'll get it treated
Thank you Dr. I really learn a lot preciate it Happy New Year 🤗🙋
Super informative... thanks so much!

Yup thanks doc ❤soup hot showers helps and teas with honey helps too hope everyone feels better soon❤
thanks my man good advice!
Thank you for your help and kindness
This guy is an awesome Dr. Great detailed video thank you very much sir!
Super guidance on use of sinus spray. I also do ozone insufflation. Ozone is hazardous if not done properly. Re nasal lavage, I know somebody who nearly died from ingesting that amoeba. I filter water by RO or Berkey (boiling is another option), then add 2 teaspoons of colloidal silver to 10 oz of water, Himalayan salt, baking soda, baby shampoo to reduce surface tension, essential oil blend, and aloe vera for natural benefits and to increase viscosity.
Good advice, I'll have to try the sinus rinse
I tried a sinus rinse its supposed to go the other side when u rinse it but i used it and it went out the same spot not the other side
@@bacusmoa it doesn't matter it will remove the substance anyway, it doesn't go through because your glands are swollen but it will cleanse it
I’m currently sick with a sinus infection and went to the er. They gave me ibuprofen and cefdinir. Im using nasal rinse everyday and it helps me so much. I sometimes wish to just get surgery because I just want all my sinuses to be drained. Forever.
great advice!
Finally!!!! Someone hits it 👊
Thank you. I am going to fix this problem..
This happened to me. They give me antibiotics then it got worse. Right I am up because of a sinus infection. Thanks Jennifer 🤩
Omg!! I just did my flonase the way you described and it hit the tingling spot! Awesome
I never knew to administer nasal sprays like that over many years! Thanks, Dr. Richardson! I am trying this tonight! 😊
Does anyone else ever intermittently smell something horrible? Kind of a yucky musty smell.
Yes sir, Also been having like a knot of my bottom throat sitting there with constant phlegm. Having to hack up once in a while. Sucks.
Yes.Its the government.
Yeah it's your upper lip
I smell a funny smell way up in my nos my doc gave me a z pack but it might be a fungal infection in my sinusis
Yes i get the smell days before i get a sinus infection.
Thanks for sharing. Congested in Alabama…headed to the Sudafed!
I find gargling a few times a day with warm salt water and long hot showers along with a humidifier. I also use a nasal decongestant , however being careful to be mindful of my existing medical conditions that could be affect or interact with existing prescribed by my Physician. I also tend to drink plenty of fluids to keep hydrated and loosen mucous.
All great advice. Certainly having conditions like high blood pressure, you need to be cautious about taking oral decongestants. Thanks for the input!

For over a year I’ve had nasal issues, headaches everyday, drainage, and redness on my face all the sudden( never had it until the rest started)! What do I do?
Seems like I get a sinus infection every other week since I work at a preschool with toddlers, wiping noses and being coughed on all day😓
Thank you... what about blowing your nose all the time? Someone just told me not to do it even if its constantly running or clogged to relieve a short time relief.

Thank you very much!. Very helpful. Please let me know if it’s ok to use bottle water with sinus rinse?. Thanks from Montreal Canada 🇨🇦
I am having post-covid sinusitis and it's miserable.
Essentially:
Steam is useful - bowels of water and showers, inhale steam.
A good diet - fresh fruit & veg if possible, avoid junk food (heavily refined garbage and oily nonsense are a no no).
General hydration.
Gentle exercise.
Lots of rest.
Minimise stimulants like caffeine, as this won't help.
Obviously no alcohol and don't smoke!
Try to remain positive.
If it doesn't clear after a few weeks, maybe Antibiotics - ask your GP.
* Ibuprofen has helped to relieve aching and pain sensations
Thank you, Dr. Richardson! 😊 I am a brand new subscriber, who frequently deals with sinus issues as recently as now. 😐 I laughed when you mentioned about the types of nasal irrigation & to find a more private place to use it. I have said when using a Saline Spray, it's not lady-like though it is effective! 😂 One of the best Christmas gifts my husband has ever gotten me three years ago is a Naväge. ❤😊
This is helpful. Thanks
OBTW: I've been experimenting with 1% Providone Iodine in my saline spray and NeilMed squeeze bottle. It seems helpful.
The data on zinc is mixed. The studies lean toward showing that it can decrease the duration of colds. Problem is that there is no consensus on the amount, frequency and length to take that will work. Other than a stomach upset and bad taste it’s not going to hurt so go for it. Just avoid the nasal zinc. It can damage your smell. Stay tuned in the next couple weeks. I have a video coming out exactly on this subject.

How much zinc Dr. Richardson?
Sitting in a steam shower also really works- I sat in a steam shower for like 20 minutes and it all just started coming out
Bloody excellent video. I do the sinus rinse, I use the pharmacy Sudafed, I spray… and my nose is definitely addicted to the oxymetazoline. As one (unhelpful) ENT Doctor once said, I am blessed with slits for nasal passages. He was so not helpful. I’ll try the cortisone sprays and try to be patient but this is weeks of no relief and I have to fly for 6 hours in a few days and my ears are unbearable with pressure. I’ll try the mucinex. I’ve not tried that one.
I used too much salt when I did irrigation and choked giving me the scare of my life. So if you are going to do nasal irrigation please make sure you don't put too much salt in. Unfortunately that put me off so I got a nasal spray sinusoothe and that keeps my sinuses clear. I used to have terrible congestion due to allergies that also caused sinus infections but this not only keeps my passages clear but also has cured my infection and my allergies don't seem to be as bad. I also haven't caught a cold, flu or even COVID since I started using this over two years ago. But I still take COVID precautions. maybe I've just been lucky.
I’ve had a persistent sinus infection since I had endoscopic sinus surgery in 2007 for a deviated septum and narrowed passages. The mucus is so thick it has the consistency of bubble gum and green to yellow. Irrigating is about all I can do. It really sucks!!! I’ve tried it all including allergy shots, steroid sprays ect
sea salt / 2 drops of iodine /xylirol. mix with boiled water let cool and use with a rinse bottle ... i sufferd for years until i came across this
I’ve done all these.. zicam spray, Sudafed, Flonase. Walgreens cold/flu. Now antibiotics. It’s been several weeks still no help
Currently have sinus infection. Today's better than the previous but it's still uncomfortable when I bow my head. There's still closing pressure on my face/nasal area when I blow my nose.
Thanks Doc.
If you use a neti pot with salt water, use distilled water and boil it first...let it cool and then fill your netty pot...
I liked this video very much and it was helpful. I have a question though. My Brother always wants me to take Zinc and swears by it. What are your thoughts and is Zinc a compound that is truly helpful and possible up and downsides ? Thanks

Zinc helps your body absorb vitamins
I like a nice hot wet/damp face cloth layed over the forhead, nose and cheek that I feel helps loosen it (I think of it kind of like sticky wax, if you warm it it lossens it). I also find I get tooth pain sensitivity with it so clearing it relieves the tooth pain.
Thank you !!
Thank you. Very informative video
Thank you!
I’m 70 and I got a terrible sinus problem from Covid. Never had sinus problems before that. I tried the nasal washes and they don’t even go past my nose. Lost my sense of taste and smell too. I’m at a loss of what to do.
Thank you!!!!
I’ve had sinus infections from working; welding fumes, composite dust and ever mowing the grass. Use a respirator.
Thank you.
Thank you sr.
I had a CT Sinus done & today, I follow up with my ENT for my results. I am so scared. I read that I have “mucosal thickening in the sphenoid sinuses.” How is that treated? I’m scared to have any type of surgery UNLESS I am awake 😩
I had a cold in January and have had congestion and drainage ever since. (Although I have hayfever/allergies which has been flaring up the past few months) I lie down and when I wake up, my nose is totally blocked and the backed up mucus persists annoyingly for about an hour and about every few weeks ALL DAY (this has been going on everyday since January). I finally tried some facial pressure, massage the past month which FINALLY started to clear my maxillary sinus'. But it wasn't a "permanent" solution. Yesterday, I took some vigorous exercise and in the morning air my ears were too cold and started to give me intense pain, which spread to my jaw, nose area and forehead ( behind my eyes). I was on the verge of tears. ALL MY SINUSES ?! I'm taking painkillers right now, because this pain has GOT TO GO! I hadn't even thought of taking nasal spray or decongestants. But this pain is really debilitating and I don't want to take painkillers every day! I have no idea why I haven't tried to fix it sooner, but I'm going to fix it now. Thanks for this informative video- really appreciate it!!!
Just cleanse your body. Take anything that makes you go to the bathroom heavily. You’ll be normal again!
If you have severe pain, you have an infection, and have to get treated with antibiotics. Do a panel test to know exactly what you are allergic to, then get a sinus wash, rinse with the powder it comes with all that removes the substance you are allergic to, you will feel better in no time, the spray is used only when your glands are swollen but it only temporarily relieves symptoms, the sinus wash will remove it completely
Today is Thursday 7/29/21 10 pm. Since last Sunday, I thought I was catching a terrible cold. Chills, congestion, worst headaches ever. So, I took some Alka Seltzer cold plus and NOTHING! My husband gave me some Tylenol Severe Sinus & BAM! Nose draining after almost 5 days & headaches finally subsiding. Was praying it wasn't this new coronavirus especially since I've had my shots! My ENT consultant gave me a massive syringe and told me to mix a heaped spoon of salt and a half spoon of bicarbonate of soda into a pint of water, then use the syringe to spray the mixture up my nose every morning……I’ve not had any issues since I started doing that.
I constantly had sinus and throat issues, hence why I was referred to ENT.

Thank you so much! If you don’t have purified water, can you boil the water to clean it first?
Very important..use boil water or destilad water...
I’ve never had allergies. I once had my whole sinus cavity fill with fluid at age 13.
In early 2020, i got an intense headache. Nose drips, sore throat, chills, ear pain, eye pain, stiff neck, loss of smell/taste, loss of appetite, insomnia.
I’m still experiencing all this. A few days ago i felt like my body was about to give out, difficulty breathing. I went to the ER. They gave me sudafed. Symptoms worsened. They sent me home.
Omg. What are your conditions now?
you should document that or them to document that, i don’t think they can do that
Uhhhhhh you had Coronavirus. Those are all the EXACT symptoms I had. Sorry they didn’t test you for Covid-19 bc then you could’ve had treatment geared specifically for that. I was pregnant so I couldn’t take everything but my husband got it too and was prescribed Ivermectin, a monoclonal antibody infusion iv, zinc, quercitin, daily aspirin, high doses of vitamin d, and vitamin c, a steroid for his lungs later and an antibiotic. The long term symptoms you are experiencing are long haul covid. I also feel like fainting after walking across the room and I had covid 2 months ago.
Yeah you had Covid for sure
Sounds like Omicron I had in January. Well, thats what the test said. Now I just had it again. Exactly as you described, as well as coughing up thick green mucous from what Im sure is post nasal drip. Went to another doc. His diagnoses was sinus infection. Anti-biotics, anti inflamitories, cortizoid nebulizer..... five days later still coughing but mucous is still thick, but at least clear now.
Holy crap I've been using the spray wrong for all my life until I saw this no wonder it wasn't working
I’ve been dealing with sinus infections for over 7 years at least! The symptom that it really bothers me is the fatigue. Along these years I’ve done a few things that it really helped me.
1.First of all, for prevention: Lemon with water every day on a empty stomach. Once I stopped doing this daily I got infected again!
2. Sleep with two pillows to keep your head slightly elevated so it helps on your breathing. The air goes through more easily.
3. Nasal spray at least twice a day.
4. Drink a lot of water.
5. In worst case scenarios I had to go to see a specialist and take antibiotics, because they were caused by a bacteria, so I could feel brand new !
I hope this helps! 🇧🇷
Oh! Check your vitamin D levels! Once I had mine in a good level, I had only one little mild episode of sinusitis and it went away quickly! This makes your immune system much stronger!
I have it again because I had coronavirus. Getting better though! 🤦🏻♀️☺️
Really helpful thanks👍

Outstanding info, except try normal saline nose spray first. No drugs. Keep it simple. Also, it might be time to admit you have seasonal allergies, which can come up in your 40s. And of course the Zyrtecs…. Also, Azelastine. I’ll give a big thumbs up to that one too. He is correct about tilting the head. “If you tatste it, you waste it.” Primary thought is NS nose spray. Has been a life changer. Just rinse out the sinuses. Wow
Rebound congestion's been shown false in multiple studies/papers since long before this video's release.
Currently going through a horrible bout with a bad cold and a major sinus infection. I've been dealing with a stuffed nose about a month. No cough really just stuffed up. Had doxycycline didn't do nothing but cause nose bleeds. I'm starting to think I may have diabetes and that is the cause. I don't consume much sugar but apparently enough. I know it turn fatal if not taken care of. So think mine might be fungal. Haven't slept more than 2 hrs a day for a month and work 3rd shift. I'm afraid to go to hospital. I have a young son and nobody to really help out so hopefully it just goes away
If you don’t have purified water, use tap or filtered water and microwave it in a mug and let it cool down a bit before using it in your nasal rinse or netipot
Anyone here ever blown a mucus plug out of your nose? I’ll never forget the first time I did that. It was like brownish/orange and I had no idea what it was. You mentioned that it often starts out as a cold then turns into a sinus infection. One question - when you say got to your doctor if symptoms last more than 10 days, is that referring to when the cold symptoms started or when the sinus infection symptoms started?
The sinus infection
I have had swelling in one side of my nose & pain in the roof of my mouth since April. I took antibiotics last December & it went away, but now has returned & won't go away. One ENT wanted to do surgery. When I went to a 2nd ENT she told me I did not have a sinus infection. She advised for me to put neosporin in my nose twice a day.The swelling in my nose went away but the roof of my mouth still hurt. I then went to my primary Dr. & he told me this is happening to me because I have a lower than normal immune system. I'm at my wits end & I guess I have to live with this. I'm miserable every single day. Sinus rinses don't take down swelling. I'm afraid to use flonase or nasocort because I have osteoporosis & was told this could make it worse. The swelling is now back in my nose that makes the roof of my mouth hurt even more. I can't keep using neosporin in my nose because that could be bad. Any suggestions?
Omg same I’m miserable I’d rather just do the surgery and get rid of it
@@ark5428 Have you been told you need surgery, and have you got a 2nd or 3rd opinion? One ENT said I needed, the next one said for sure I didn't need it. Nevertheless, I'm still in pain. My primary Dr. is telling me I just have to live with it. This is no way to live
@@chrischamberlain7628 all of the doctors just say it’s allergies and don’t take me seriously but there’s no way in hell I can live like this I’m going to a specialist because this has been going on more months. I’ve tried nasal rinses, and countless meds
@@ark5428 I've been to 3 ENT's & 2 allergist. I was told I am not allergic to anything. The first ENT claimed I was allergic to my entire town. This was before I went to an allergist. 2nd ENT wanted to do surgery, but the 3rd claimed I did not need surgery. I've tried rinses, different OTC meds, steaming that helps for a while, & everything else. I can't stand it anymore. I've had this before but it went away after taking antibiotics. Now this has been going on since April. I'm going crazy because of it. This is not normal. My primary Dr. told me I was smart to not have the surgery done. He's telling me this is happening to me after doing blood work on me because I have a low immune system. I'm freaked out about that.
@@chrischamberlain7628 wow I’m so sorry. This is my first time experiencing this and it’s so awful I can’t even function at work hopefully my antibiotics get rid of it for good I wish you good luck and hope you are able to find a solution to your pain. 🙏🏽
Downy ans fabric softnare messes me up!!! I have completely cover my mouth and nose when I walk or drive by a landry shop. Fabric softnare is banned from my house. I get nauseous and get very sick
What about those little Vapor inhalers? (the look like a lipstick or a lip balm) I think I use it way too much.
Thanks for the tip of bending my head down and using my steroid nasal spray💜
