Yeah I'm a Habs fan but I hope for the best for Wright. I don't know if it's on their minds at all but I enjoy the Slafkovsky/Wright rivalry, I think it'll be really cool to watch who the better player was when it's all said and done.
It's better he was drafted anywhere but Montréal, whether he realizes it or not. Our media and fans would have destroyed his already not prepared mental state. There's no chance he'd be under the radar if he was playing in Laval, and he demonstrated how he deals with things not going his way when his name was called at four. I hope it works out for him, but I'm extremely glad for all of us that he won't be finding out wearing the "CHC".

Same could be said about Brady. He did all but give the other teams a stink eye and made them figure it on the field. Wright has the same energy but does it physically. Wouldn’t discount his potential just yet. Edit: I did mention 2 different sports but I hope you saw the point I was trying to make

The habs management group has been hashing the same words for 3 drafts now....confidence not arrogance. They passed on Michkov because of it and passed on Wright because of it. Finally, if that staredown was really a show of character, why didn't he make the NHL out of the draft? As the concensus 1st OA, he should have been ready? Yet, the team that drafted him decided to send him back to the AHL. That doesn't sound like a show of character from him. Now, I will admit, he did a lot of work on himself and seem much better now. His potential is still there and if he can fix his arrogance (not confidence) he will be a legit high end 2nd line center or a 1B with Beniers or Catton.
Haven't watch Wright play but when Slaf 2.0 showed up late November I had my answers. Habs are going to be a speedy, crafty, puck possesing team and Slaf will continue to be a monster out there.
I'm a Habs fan and wanted the Habs to draft him until I saw an interview he gave about 2 weeks before the draft where he said: "I deserve to be drafted number 1" and this completely turned me off of him. Didn't like that entitlement at all. Especially not for a market like MTL.
I was all in on Wright, until i saw him play against the Colts, He did not stand out, slow and no flash, very disappointed when i left. Hughes by far picked the right player.
Same thing, I remember thinking the Habs couldn't go wrong with Wright as the safe choice, but when I saw that interview, combined with the fact he clearly wasn't a generational talent, I immediately started hoping for either Slaf or Cooley.
I was never sold on Shane Wright. Watched some of his highlight reels and I didn't like the way he would backcheck. Was non existent unless he had the puck on his blade. Cooley on the other hand, had tons of speed, would backcheck, had great hands but was small. Didn't know much about Slavkovsky. Glad the Habs were on top of it.
I wonder if Hakstol's treatment of Wright was one of the factors in Seattle management firing him. The new coach is very familiar with Wright as he was the head coach at the AHL team Wright played with last year.
lots of habs fans were excited about the pick, i dont remember any booing at all, lots of cheering actually. I know me and and my friends all wanted slafkovsky, so not sure where you got your info, also the wright stare down was while he got on the stage not off. clearly he as an attitude problem and lots of scouts commented on that character flaw. i personally wish him all the best, but im happy montreal took slaf, he's getting better and better and cant wait until he reaches his ceiling in a few years, especially with that team friendly contract.
I wanted Slaf, not Wright and it was very easy to see why if you watched Shane's OHL playoffs. His team down by two goals with half a game to play and he wouldn't back check. This happened over and over. I was relieved they didn't take him.
Shane dodged a bullet not being the #1 pick for Montreal. the fans and the media were harsh on Slafkovsky, who had a bad first year and his second was going to be even worst until Marty St-Louis finally put him on the first line. basically saved his development. but you can't have 2 centers on the first line and Suzuki will probably never play on the second line ever again.
I'd love it if my team could lure Wright away from the Krakken. He's very desirable. Its unfortunate he had to go to Seattle and Hakstol. A different team would have got us to a different point today. I'm very interested in the Slaf, Cooley, Wright play this season
I watched Shane Wright closely when he came with Coachella to Calgary. He reminded me of Joe Sakic (when he was a rookie in Quebec) in that he wasn't flashy but he did a lot of good things, kept his head down and worked. If Shane can approach Joe's record Seattle should be pretty pleased.
Sakic is one of the greatest players of all time... If Shane becomes a tenth of a player Sakic was then he will be a solid top 6'er in the NHL... And that would no bust of a career for him... But Joe was no ordinary Joe, and good luck seeing the likes of him or Stevie Y again any time soon! Talent, character, grit, workhorse, winner... That's a complete package that only a couple a generation can live up to!
Wright is still developing.It depends if he wants to have a career with Seattle or another team.The only way I could see Seattle c9nsider moving Wright is if they got a big piece in return,a top line center or maybe an upgrade in goal.
I thought Seattle did wright dirty his “rookie” season. Maybe he wasn’t ready and that’s fine but there was I believe a 3 game stretch where his family was flew in and the kept him scratched the 3 games. I get him not being ready, I get keeping him scratched a first to learn the system, players, coach etc. but knowing the kids family was flew in for 3 games to watch there son in the nhl with there own eye and STILL keep him scratched is dirty in my eyes
7:58 reminder that was his second OHL team, the reason he got healthy scratched a bunch in October was because his first OHL team was horrible (finished third from last) so the Kraken kept him with the pro coaches till he was trade to the spitfire (a heavy favor to win the championship) before they were upsetted. The Kraken were actually really smart that first year balancing all of the limits on how many games he could play in the NHL, AHL, and OHL. They missed him being eligible for the Calder this year by 2 games because he played 8 NHL games this season.

The best players play 'with' their linemates, they feed off each other in how the coach designs the Team play. Eichel, O'Rielly, Reinhart played in Buffalo, never made the playoffs but joined "TEAMS" that won and contributed mightily. In truth, you can't judge players alone, or on their teams, unless they play on the same team. Thinking a player can be the "Messiah" and bring a cup is the wishful thinking of fans whose teams don't win, in Montreal or Seattle. The league is just too damn big, all fans deserve to celebrate a Stanley Cup win, or even go to a game without getting "mugged by the price". Shane will be alright and a long career, I don't have the same confidence in long careers for Euro players. Just remember the b/s surrounding Hall and Seguin, 14 yrs later they are the top 2 points leaders of the 2010 draft.
I doubt he would of handled the pressure of playing in Montreal… Slav had the weight of his country on his back and loves the pressure this is what makes him the perfect fit
Looking at slafkovsky like Jack hughes, it's not unreasonable to say he could be a 100, if not 110 point player one day. Most likely 80-90 points thought.

There are 2 wingers on the first line, and since slaf is a natural LW and Demidov a RW, watch them feed off each other in 2-3 years. The complementarity in their styles is insane and they will 100% be one of the most lethal duo's in the league. As a Habs fan, it annoys me sometimes to see Habs fans praying for Wright's downfall. It's really petty. Are we really that offended that he stared down our GM? I hope the kid does well. That being said, next season is make-or-break for him if he wants to be a top 6 contributor in the NHL. He needs to at least be a full-time NHLer playing in the middle 6. There's a clear path to him being Seattle's 2C and I hope he's able to seize the opportunity. It's great that he killed it in Coachella but high-end prospects like him shouldn't languish in the AHL for too long. Minor nitpick about Slaf: I think he would have been expected to be the #1 winger going forward, but selecting Demidov should change that. I think Demidov is likely to be the highest scoring player on the team by his third season. Slaf should be the #2 guy, or maybe the #3 depending on what Caufield does.
Absolutely agree about the first part, Wright remains a high end center that will be one of the top 2nd line centers in the league. 30 goals 30 assist with a good 200 foot game....he just needs to find his will to win in the playoffs. As for slaf and demidov, it doesnt really matter which is 1st and which is second....they will 100% be one of the most lethal duo in the league. Their skill sets are soooo complementary and if this season was any indication, slaf will be able to follow demidov's plays on the ice. I think we will have a lot of slaf goals assisted by Demigod (dov) and a lot of Demidov's goals assisted by Slaf. I know I am exctatic to see them play together in a few yeara.

People acting like Wright not going 1st overall after all the build-up must mean he's some kind of bust. Meanwhile I'm betting a lot of those same "fans" are the ones acting like Savoie will be a 50-goal scorer for the Oilers. This despite him being (1) smaller (2) nowhere NEAR as hyped as Wright was prior to that draft. Wright will be a difference-maker long before Savoie.
Followed him very closely his draft year at the end of Kingstons season and through the playoffs. I thought FOR SURE that the Habs were going to pick him, precisely due to the hype you so very well outlined, boy was I shocked. I thought he was very unimpressive. Floater and not the great 2-way forward he was hyped to be. Uninvolved, low motor, and just wasn't a difference maker. Yet, he still managed to put up some points. But he clearly wasn't the play-driver on his team. He was actually about the 3-4th best player in the playoffs for the Fronts. I was thinking, wow, THIS is going to be our pick? So I switched to wanting Cooley, and of course, the Habs knew better than me and picked the clear best player at this point, in Slaf. IMO, Wright can be a great winger. A sniper. Still has a great release, no doubt. I just can't see him as a center. Put him with Catton, eventually, and Catton will save this dudes career. I think Catton is the real deal. Slafkovsky is beast. The sky is the limit for him.
The problem today is fans seem to expect an 18 yo to play immediately in the NHL and that rarely happens. He’s 20, he needed some work, big deal. Let’s see what he does his first full season in the NHL before calling him a bust 🙄
Hectic Hockey your scouting ability seems to be as good as your knowledge on NHL rules. I wouldnt hold your breath waiting to see how Wright is doing in the 2024-2025 Calder trophy race.... His ship had already sailed in 23-24 on any pipe dream chance of ever winning that trophy
I spoke with my son's hockey coach who is also happens to be an associate director for player development in one of the NHL's teams. I asked him about why some kids make Brick and Quebec Invitational teams, killing it in CHL/NCAA, get 1st round pick and then fail. He said that there are few factors, but the biggest one is ego. A lot of those kids just got used to special treatment on their previous teams. If you're a "Brick kid", you play top minutes, wearing a "C", playing national team sometimes, but it's all against the kids mostly your age. And then you switch to playing with different level of players, where stakes are higher, and 99% of those kids are 3rd line at best and playing 10-12 min a game. A lot of them have a hard time dealing with that. So this guy works with drafted players or young prospects in our area and preparing them, especially mentally to transition to the NHL. I feel like Wright fits into the similar bucket where he was on track to be the next generational talent, didn't work out, got a big dip, but it seems like he's going to be just fine. It doesn't matter how you start it matters how you finish.
The more i look at Wright and Slafkovsky development and character...the more i thank Kent Hugues and the new scouting and analytic team of the Montréal Canadiens ! Nick Bobrov said it best for Slafkovsky...his level of pressure is that of a country and the proof is in the pudding. It was in his character to be competitive. Shane Wright on the other end, he doesn't seems to have the same level of competition or character. His development is staling and he most do something soon to rectify it, or the label or bust will begin to be associated with him. That stare at the draft...if it really was at the Montréal table, it was really childish and just confirmed the perfect pick for Montréal ! I want the best for him, cause Seattle deserve 2 good center, but it's this year it must change !
I think it's a little early to call anyone in that draft a bust... Shane is real talented and intelligent player as the narrator of the video said but it was clear he needed time to develop and mature- which he is doing like all young men... I think in a few years it will reveal who won that draft and my bet is on the Krakens cause Shane is a special player and though i think they both are going to have a good career for their team i think Shane will ultimately will be seen as the real steal of the draft! Both got all-star potential though!

When it appeared in newspapers and on net and he was asked about it, he didn't know what to say so he made up a story about actually staring at journalists. And that made it even worse (and laughable) as it was clear he was just looking for (poor) excuses. Like sh*t happens. It's always better to own your mistakes and learn from them than to pretend they didn't happen and look for excuses. It would have been less of a deal had he just owned that he f****d up and moved on...

Good informative video - but one correction I would make. Wright was not the consensus #1 overall pick at the time of the draft. Bob Mckenzie and a few others had Slaf at #1. It wasn't really an off-the-board pick as people seem to suggest.
Yeah as I said it wasn’t expected, but it wasn’t necessarily a shock. Lots of people still had Wright going 1 and at the least 3. Slaf was rising heading towards the draft.

Watched him play for the Frontenacs many times and his hockey IQ and shot was head and shoulders about everyone else. I think the fact that hearing he was going to be the number one overall for many years and then not being selected first really did something to his confidence. Nothing is given it is earned. I would love to see what he can do with a full season this year.

I think Wright likely has a floor as an excellent 200-foot 3rd line center & the potential to be an elite 2nd line center in the NHL & an integral part of a Stanley Cup winning roster. That said, from watching him play Wright doesn't scream "franchise cornerstone" to me. He's very good at everything (I.E. on a 1-10 grade he's at least a 7.5-8 on every attribute) but top flight stars are usually ones who have multiple "10 skills" even if they're lacking in others. For example, Tkachuk is clearly a subpar NHL skater but his hands, hockey sense, compete & playmaking are all 10s & make him a superstar. However, Wright is simply very good at every skill, none of which will enable him to overpower NHL defenses.

He was a lower ceiling but safe pick as a two way player. The fact that Seattle is competing right now and not a team in tank mode with a guaranteed roster is the main reason why he is not in the NHL. For example compare Lafreniere and Zegras one plays on an awful team, gets top line and pp time, and doesnt have to care about winning while the other has none of that and a coach that will bench him for making mistakes. Comparing prospects based on their development when their situations are apples and oranges is stupid. I dont think Zegras is a good hockey player at all but he might score a bunch of meaningless points on a bad team which makes people think he is developing well when in fact it doesn't mean anything. In 5 or more years we can maybe have a discussion on how these prospects turned out but its way too early.
Wright walked into the pre-draft team meetings with a huge chip on his shoulder and has been spending the last few seasons shaking it off. Will he eventually be good in the NHL , probably. But it is going to happen when he accepts that his reason for not being where he thinks he should be will be when he realizes he thinks too much. He needs to just play hockey, and stop thinking.
He's got a chip on his shoulder and plays with an edge... This is not a bad mentality in such a rock em sock em league like the NHL... He's got a lot to prove and is aiming for revenge and that's not a weak motive and he's got wicked talent to back it up if he can develop more in the next couple years... Wright was challenged in character development. He may still be at a 13 year old level or worse. He is going to have to go through a few falls before he starts to come back to reality.

Haven't watch Wright play but when Slaf 2.0 showed up late November I had my answers. Habs are going to be a speedy, crafty, puck possesing team and Slaf will continue to be a monster out there.
I'm a Habs fan and wanted the Habs to draft him until I saw an interview he gave about 2 weeks before the draft where he said:
"I deserve to be drafted number 1" and this completely turned me off of him. Didn't like that entitlement at all. Especially not for a market like MTL.
I was all in on Wright, until i saw him play against the Colts, He did not stand out, slow and no flash, very disappointed when i left. Hughes by far picked the right player.
Same thing, I remember thinking the Habs couldn't go wrong with Wright as the safe choice, but when I saw that interview, combined with the fact he clearly wasn't a generational talent, I immediately started hoping for either Slaf or Cooley.
I was never sold on Shane Wright. Watched some of his highlight reels and I didn't like the way he would backcheck. Was non existent unless he had the puck on his blade. Cooley on the other hand, had tons of speed, would backcheck, had great hands but was small. Didn't know much about Slavkovsky. Glad the Habs were on top of it.

I wonder if Hakstol's treatment of Wright was one of the factors in Seattle management firing him. The new coach is very familiar with Wright as he was the head coach at the AHL team Wright played with last year.
lots of habs fans were excited about the pick, i dont remember any booing at all, lots of cheering actually. I know me and and my friends all wanted slafkovsky, so not sure where you got your info, also the wright stare down was while he got on the stage not off. clearly he as an attitude problem and lots of scouts commented on that character flaw. i personally wish him all the best, but im happy montreal took slaf, he's getting better and better and cant wait until he reaches his ceiling in a few years, especially with that team friendly contract.

I wanted Slaf, not Wright and it was very easy to see why if you watched Shane's OHL playoffs. His team down by two goals with half a game to play and he wouldn't back check. This happened over and over. I was relieved they didn't take him.

Shane dodged a bullet not being the #1 pick for Montreal. the fans and the media were harsh on Slafkovsky, who had a bad first year and his second was going to be even worst until Marty St-Louis finally put him on the first line. basically saved his development. but you can't have 2 centers on the first line and Suzuki will probably never play on the second line ever again.

I watched Shane Wright closely when he came with Coachella to Calgary. He reminded me of Joe Sakic (when he was a rookie in Quebec) in that he wasn't flashy but he did a lot of good things, kept his head down and worked. If Shane can approach Joe's record Seattle should be pretty pleased.
Sakic is one of the greatest players of all time... If Shane becomes a tenth of a player Sakic was then he will be a solid top 6'er in the NHL... And that would no bust of a career for him... But Joe was no ordinary Joe, and good luck seeing the likes of him or Stevie Y again any time soon! Talent, character, grit, workhorse, winner... That's a complete package that only a couple a generation can live up to!

Wright is still developing.It depends if he wants to have a career with Seattle or another team.The only way I could see Seattle c9nsider moving Wright is if they got a big piece in return,a top line center or maybe an upgrade in goal.
I thought Seattle did wright dirty his “rookie” season. Maybe he wasn’t ready and that’s fine but there was I believe a 3 game stretch where his family was flew in and the kept him scratched the 3 games. I get him not being ready, I get keeping him scratched a first to learn the system, players, coach etc. but knowing the kids family was flew in for 3 games to watch there son in the nhl with there own eye and STILL keep him scratched is dirty in my eyes

Not crazy that someone who isn’t a Kraken fan would lose track of someone in the AHL.
7:58 reminder that was his second OHL team, the reason he got healthy scratched a bunch in October was because his first OHL team was horrible (finished third from last) so the Kraken kept him with the pro coaches till he was trade to the spitfire (a heavy favor to win the championship) before they were upsetted. The Kraken were actually really smart that first year balancing all of the limits on how many games he could play in the NHL, AHL, and OHL. They missed him being eligible for the Calder this year by 2 games because he played 8 NHL games this season.
Turns out the coyotes scouts got that one spot on. Cooley is not only doing better on a worse team, it looks like he also has a higher ceiling.

Good job, Hectic, nice even take, I hope the kid has a great career. Unfortunately so many comments are about players as if their talent stands alone to be evaluated. The best players play 'with' their linemates, they feed off each other in how the coach designs the Team play. Eichel, O'Rielly, Reinhart played in Buffalo, never made the playoffs but joined "TEAMS" that won and contributed mightily. In truth, you can't judge players alone, or on their teams, unless they play on the same team. Thinking a player can be the "Messiah" and bring a cup is the wishful thinking of fans whose teams don't win, in Montreal or Seattle. The league is just too damn big, all fans deserve to celebrate a Stanley Cup win, or even go to a game without getting "mugged by the price". Thanks Bettman, now when the hell are you going to retire?

Shane will be alright and a long career, I don't have the same confidence in long careers for Euro players. Just remember the b/s surrounding Hall and Seguin, 14 yrs later they are the top 2 points leaders of the 2010 draft.

The title is dumb, kid just finished a great year in the AHL who just turned 20
5 goals in 16 NHL games with a coach who jerked him around and wouldn’t give him regular playing time. He’s got a new coach and will get a boatload of minutes, he’ll be fine.

There are 2 wingers on the first line, and since slaf is a natural LW and Demidov a RW, watch them feed off each other in 2-3 years. The complementarity in their styles is insane and they will 100% be one of the most lethal duo's in the league.
P.S. i get that you mean Demidov will have more points, but I wouldnt sell slaf short either.

As a Habs fan, it annoys me sometimes to see Habs fans praying for Wright's downfall. It's really petty. Are we really that offended that he stared down our GM? I hope the kid does well. That being said, next season is make-or-break for him if he wants to be a top 6 contributor in the NHL. He needs to at least be a full-time NHLer playing in the middle 6. There's a clear path to him being Seattle's 2C and I hope he's able to seize the opportunity. It's great that he killed it in Coachella but high-end prospects like him shouldn't languish in the AHL for too long.
Minor nitpick about Slaf: I think he would have been expected to be the #1 winger going forward, but selecting Demidov should change that. I think Demidov is likely to be the highest scoring player on the team by his third season. Slaf should be the #2 guy, or maybe the #3 depending on what Caufield does.
Absolutely agree about the first part, Wright remains a high end center that will be one of the top 2nd line centers in the league. 30 goals 30 assist with a good 200 foot game....he just needs to find his will to win in the playoffs.
As for slaf and demidov, it doesnt really matter which is 1st and which is second....they will 100% be one of the most lethal duo in the league. Their skill sets are soooo complementary and if this season was any indication, slaf will be able to follow demidov's plays on the ice.
I think we will have a lot of slaf goals assisted by Demigod (dov) and a lot of Demidov's goals assisted by Slaf.
I know I am exctatic to see them play together in a few yeara.

Meanwhile I'm betting a lot of those same "fans" are the ones acting like Savoie will be a 50-goal scorer for the Oilers. This despite him being (1) smaller (2) nowhere NEAR as hyped as Wright was prior to that draft. Wright will be a difference-maker long before Savoie.

Followed him very closely his draft year at the end of Kingstons season and through the playoffs. I thought FOR SURE that the Habs were going to pick him, precisely due to the hype you so very well outlined, boy was I shocked. I thought he was very unimpressive. Floater and not the great 2-way forward he was hyped to be. Uninvolved, low motor, and just wasn't a difference maker. Yet, he still managed to put up some points. But he clearly wasn't the play-driver on his team. He was actually about the 3-4th best player in the playoffs for the Fronts. I was thinking, wow, THIS is going to be our pick? So I switched to wanting Cooley, and of course, the Habs knew better than me and picked the clear best player at this point, in Slaf.
IMO, Wright can be a great winger. A sniper. Still has a great release, no doubt. I just can't see him as a center. Put him with Catton, eventually, and Catton will save this dudes career. I think Catton is the real deal.
Slafkovsky is beast. The sky is the limit for him.
The problem today is fans seem to expect an 18 yo to play immediately in the NHL and that rarely happens. He’s 20, he needed some work, big deal. Let’s see what he does his first full season in the NHL before calling him a bust 🙄

I spoke with my son's hockey coach who is also happens to be an associate director for player development in one of the NHL's teams.
I asked him about why some kids make Brick and Quebec Invitational teams, killing it in CHL/NCAA, get 1st round pick and then fail. He said that there are few factors, but the biggest one is ego. A lot of those kids just got used to special treatment on their previous teams. If you're a "Brick kid", you play top minutes, wearing a "C", playing national team sometimes, but it's all against the kids mostly your age. And then you switch to playing with different level of players, where stakes are higher, and 99% of those kids are 3rd line at best and playing 10-12 min a game. A lot of them have a hard time dealing with that.
So this guy works with drafted players or young prospects in our area and preparing them, especially mentally to transition to the NHL.
I feel like Wright fits into the similar bucket where he was on track to be the next generational talent, didn't work out, got a big dip, but it seems like he's going to be just fine. It doesn't matter how you start it matters how you finish.
The more i look at Wright and Slafkovsky development and character...the more i thank Kent Hugues and the new scouting and analytic team of the Montréal Canadiens ! Nick Bobrov said it best for Slafkovsky...his level of pressure is that of a country and the proof is in the pudding. It was in his character to be competitive.
Shane Wright on the other end, he doesn't seems to have the same level of competition or character. His development is staling and he most do something soon to rectify it, or the label or bust will begin to be associated with him. That stare at the draft...if it really was at the Montréal table, it was really childish and just confirmed the perfect pick for Montréal ! I want the best for him, cause Seattle deserve 2 good center, but it's this year it must change !
I think it's a little early to call anyone in that draft a bust... Shane is real talented and intelligent player as the narrator of the video said but it was clear he needed time to develop and mature- which he is doing like all young men... I think in a few years it will reveal who won that draft and my bet is on the Krakens cause Shane is a special player and though i think they both are going to have a good career for their team i think Shane will ultimately will be seen as the real steal of the draft! Both got all-star potential though!

Wright DID stare at the Mtl's draft table. When it appeared in newspapers and on net and he was asked about it, he didn't know what to say so he made up a story about actually staring at journalists. And that made it even worse (and laughable) as it was clear he was just looking for (poor) excuses.
Like sh*t happens. It's always better to own your mistakes and learn from them than to pretend they didn't happen and look for excuses. It would have been less of a deal had he just owned that he f****d up and moved on...

The Spits sold the farm to get him and they lost in the first round of the playoffs after dominating the season. Guy is mediocre at best.
Good informative video - but one correction I would make. Wright was not the consensus #1 overall pick at the time of the draft. Bob Mckenzie and a few others had Slaf at #1. It wasn't really an off-the-board pick as people seem to suggest.
Yeah as I said it wasn’t expected, but it wasn’t necessarily a shock. Lots of people still had Wright going 1 and at the least 3. Slaf was rising heading towards the draft.

Watched him play for the Frontenacs many times and his hockey IQ and shot was head and shoulders about everyone else. I think the fact that hearing he was going to be the number one overall for many years and then not being selected first really did something to his confidence. Nothing is given it is earned. I would love to see what he can do with a full season this year.

The Habs could have had Caufield, Michkov, Slafkovsky and Demidov as thete top 4 wingers!!

Smart move by Habs to pass on him. One thing to drop from 1rst to 2nd....but from 1rst to 4th is a big drop. Dude has attitude issue.
I think Wright likely has a floor as an excellent 200-foot 3rd line center & the potential to be an elite 2nd line center in the NHL & an integral part of a Stanley Cup winning roster.
That said, from watching him play Wright doesn't scream "franchise cornerstone" to me. He's very good at everything (I.E. on a 1-10 grade he's at least a 7.5-8 on every attribute) but top flight stars are usually ones who have multiple "10 skills" even if they're lacking in others.
For example, Tkachuk is clearly a subpar NHL skater but his hands, hockey sense, compete & playmaking are all 10s & make him a superstar. However, Wright is simply very good at every skill, none of which will enable him to overpower NHL defenses.
I don't think he is a draft bust. I think he will eventually be a good player if he matures and changes his attitude.

He was a lower ceiling but safe pick as a two way player. The fact that Seattle is competing right now and not a team in tank mode with a guaranteed roster is the main reason why he is not in the NHL. For example compare Lafreniere and Zegras one plays on an awful team, gets top line and pp time, and doesnt have to care about winning while the other has none of that and a coach that will bench him for making mistakes. Comparing prospects based on their development when their situations are apples and oranges is stupid. I dont think Zegras is a good hockey player at all but he might score a bunch of meaningless points on a bad team which makes people think he is developing well when in fact it doesn't mean anything. In 5 or more years we can maybe have a discussion on how these prospects turned out but its way too early.
Wright walked into the pre-draft team meetings with a huge chip on his shoulder and has been spending the last few seasons shaking it off. Will he eventually be good in the NHL , probably. But it is going to happen when he accepts that his reason for not being where he thinks he should be will be when he realizes he thinks too much. He needs to just play hockey, and stop thinking.

Wright was challenged in character development. He may still be at a 13 year old level or worse. He is going to have to go through a few falls before he starts to come back to reality.
