  • The Rolling Stones were on a roll! Between 1968 and 1972, they put out four albums that many fans say are their greatest, and some even say they're among the best rock albums ever made. Their last album in this amazing streak was a double album called "Exile on Main St." It was a wild ride to close out this epic period, just like you'd expect from the Stones.
Most folks know the story behind the album's name: the band had to leave England for a while because of high taxes, so they rented a place in France to make their music. But even though they were in Europe, the music on "Exile on Main St." is a mix of blues, soul, country, and rock - a sound that's all over the map in the best way possible.
The Rolling Stones may be known as rock and roll rebels, but even rockers can be total romantics! "Loving Cup" is a sweet and soulful love song. The lyrics are full of cute metaphors, and let's be honest, who wouldn't want someone to tell them they'd "love to spill the beans with you till dawn"? This song wouldn't be the same without the beautiful piano playing by Nicky Hopkins. He really adds a special touch that makes the whole song feel warm and loving.

The Rolling Stones are the Greatest Rock'n Roll Band of all times. Better than the Beatles.

That has been M.O. for ages. Journalist Rich Cohen wrote a book about one of their tours, I think from the '90s, and he got their in the beginning of the tour rehearsals + I think he was a little down hearted at first, 'cuz he's a fan, but within a couple of days it was like the replaced the band with fresh musicians... but they're same. Also, I can't think of another band who start on the Guitarist NOT, the Drummer. Drummers always kick off a number but Stones Style= Guitar, then a miniscule beat later Charlie kicks in. It's an unusual arrangement and if other bands do it I wish someone would turn me on to it. I'd love to know if Keith is able to do it with Steve Jordan?

1971's Sticky Fingers was the last album I bought from the Stones. The last couple of YT concerts I've seen have not changed my mind. So they left me long ago.

Rather agree. Only Mick and Keith the original Rolling Stones in the band. Not into them anymore.

Brian Jones the real true leader of the Rolling Stones. No Jones No Stones !

Yeah. Brian was the true leader (-and founder) of the band - until he was drowned, or drowned himself in abuse. Don’t know who’s to be blamed for that.
Fact is that Jagger & Richards’ songwriting was what made The Stones really big.
Saying something like “no Jones, no Stones”...well, do you REALLY think that the band hasn’t made valuable stuff after Brian Jones’ death?

@@kjeldpedersen666 Yea, I like Brian Jones myself, but you can certainly argue that the Stones most iconic music was made without any Jones participation in the music. Jones pretty quickly became outdated with his desire to stick with blues numbers. The Stones moved on.

The Band was decent when Mick Taylor joined the Band. I don't enjoy them anymore. Brian was the person that created the Rolling Stones in the beginning. He chose the music. He chose the name. He was the leader. He signed all the recording contracts, the management contracts, all kinds of things. Bo Diddley described Jones as "a little dude that was trying to pull the group ahead. I saw him as the leader. He didn't take no mess. He was a fantastic cat; he handled the group beautifully. He’s the only white cat that ever got my rhythm.” - Bo Diddley speaking of Rolling Stone, Brian Jones, 1963. He could pick up any instrument and make something out of a song. That's Brian playing the Dulcimer on Paint it Black. That song would be another throwaway if not for Mr. Jones. Brian Jones was murdered !!! Fresh water was found in his lungs during the autopsy, not chlorinated water. - There was a puncture wound on his left side. The size of a needle. - The ambulance wasn’t called until at least 3 hours after his time of death.

If you listen to the dulcimer and harpsichord on "Lady Jane," the marimba in "Under My Thumb," the sitar on "Paint It Black," the recorder on "Ruby Tuesday," or the slide guitar on "Little Red Rooster" and "No Expectations," you'll have all the proof you need that Brian Jones was a creative deviant whose influence enabled the Stones to be taken as seriously by the critics of the day as the Beatles and Bob Dylan (who, by the way, still raves about Brian's guitar playing). It's said, Brian, John Lennon, and Jimi Hendrix were to form a Super group but he got murdered. odd documents in which the daughter of the man now thought to have been involved in Jones’s death claims that the Stones’ former guitarist was confronted at his East Sussex home by Jagger and Richards over who owned the rights to the group’s name. Titled ‘Briefing Note: Death of Brian Jones’, the police report states: ‘She said that her father had told her a number of years ago that on the day of Brian’s death, Messrs Mick JAGGER and Keith RICHARDS visited Brian JONES at the farm in the morning and her father was present when Brian was asked by both men whether he would give up the name of the “Rolling Stones” to them and agree to a financial settlement.
‘Brian apparently declined to do so and it is alleged that Keith RICHARDS drew a knife. It is suggested that THOROGOOD calmed them down and both JAGGER and RICHARDS left the house.’
Brian Jones started and named The Rolling Stones in 1962.
