A thing to note in case there are some die-hard sumo fans among you: please forgive any pronunciation errors I might have made. I got into Sumo during the pandemic in 2020 and my knowledge is intermediate at best. Also, English is my native language and as a southerner, I don't even do a good job of speaking that correctly.

Genuinely stoked to see you've caught the sumo bug. It is, at its heart, a wonderfully pure and beautiful sport. The internal workings can be as infuriating as they are remarkable to follow, but the combat is surprisingly complex.
Rather like stock car racing, in fact, it's a sport that gets a lot of sneering at from quarters that don't follow it, or follow supposedly superior forms of the same sport, but it has a vast array of complexities unique to it that other disciplines just can't match. Just as snobs dismiss NASCAR as "just turning left", snobs dismiss sumo as "fat men in nappies slapping each other". But to do so misses the entire point and so much of what makes it a fascinating sport to see.

At 12:12 if you're wondering what the seat cushion throwing is for, that's traditionally done for a Kinboshi or a "gold star win". It's when a low ranking guy defeats a yokozuna. Although throwing seat cushions isn't allowed, everyone does it anyway, but the Osaka arena that holds 1 tourney per year has resorted to chaining the cushions to the ground. Forgot about that in the script and ran across it during editing. I just think it's funny.

    • @suleiman1520
      @suleiman1520 2 місяці тому +6

I got into Sumo late last year. To elaborate further, the cushion throwing is meant to show the crowds displeasure with the Yokozuna for losing to a low ranking fighter. Also, since the Yokozuna is usually the last fight of each day, there’s no issue if you no longer have a seat cushion 😂

Sumo wrestlers have lower body fat percentage than the average person, and very little visceral fat. Their diet is largely fish, meat & vegetable stew with rice, and they exercise hours each day.
Anyone who watches Sumo could tell you their bodies are mostly muscle, which is visibly apparent when they're wrestling.

Watching the March 2024 tournament was a roller coaster! Every now and then, a rookie shows up to the top division, and they may dominate early on…But as the tournament continues and they get placed against stronger and stronger rikishi, they tend to falter and only obtain an okay at best score like 9-6 or 10-5. But Takerufuji just…kept winning! When he beat Ozeki Kotonowaka, that’s when I realized that he genuinely had a shot at the emperor’s cup. ALSO! The runner up of that tournament was Onosato, who was competing in only his SECOND top division tournament! Two rookies were the ones on top, and it was amazing to witness!

I really enjoy the way you research and present information. Anything you talk about is a good video. Love the nascar but these random videos really bring a lot of entertainment.

Keep doing you with the channel! Youve got a great script layout and a great cadence and voice. You made me a nascar fan from just good story telling.

I was at day 12 of the Spring tournament and saw Takerufuji get handed his first loss by Hoshoryu.. that bout was nuts and you could hear Hoshoryu's drive into the tachiai throughout the whole venue!
The year before that, I was at the New Year's tournament and saw Steven Seagal in the crowd?? At any rate, great video! This is a great primer for anyone interested in the sumo! The sport is in good hands with a bunch of strong young bucks like Onosato and Takerufuji coming in.

Also, 7:27 Takanoyama is is awesome, unfortunately mass means so much in this game but he's truly one of a kind. There's an amazing highlight of him online, go look it up..

    More fun facts:
-All ring side judges are current stable masters (coaches)
-All stables are only allowed 1 foreign born wrestler at a time

This was awesome! Completely out of left field and I found it refreshing, and enlightening. Uncle Sam sent me to Japan twice. Once for a year with the Marine Corps and once for a few weeks while in the National Guard (B co 4-118 IN, Fountain Inn SC). Both times I wanted to see a Sumo tournament and a Kendo tournament. Time did not allow for either.
I hope you continue to make more videos like this along with your motor sports related videos.

Well done @slapshoes. I’ve been subscribed for a while and have always enjoyed the nascar content but I never would have guessed you were so cultured 🤯 How’s a good old boy from sc learn Japanese pronunciation? Chionofuji was a hammer and will forever be a legend. You the man slap keep killing it 👏

Ugg and Grugg were all grunt and no bite. They never caught a single mammoth, lost their cave betting on saber-toothed cat fights + didn’t even have a pelican to mix cement with after they pawned it for rock.
