    Hey! Cool video, I wanted to correct the misconception that the 5.56 round was developed and adopted because of its greater wounding potential.
    The initial US military requirements for an improvement to the M14 led to a joint development between Fairchild industries (who owned Armalite) who developed the M-16, and Remington who developed a cartridge to go along with the gun. The key points of the program's requirements were the very low maximum weight of the rifle, and the very high muzzle velocity (needed because speed defeats armor) So obviously the mechanisms to handle a heavy, high recoil bullet like a 7.62x51 round were out of the question, and they drew upon inspiration from the UK's experimentation with a .280 caliber round just after the war.

    • @minhducnguyen9276
      @minhducnguyen9276 9 місяців тому +12

      High velocity also increases effective range given the light weight of the bullets. Both the M16 and AK74 have further effective range than the akm and carry more ammunition.

      Aside from the "5.56mm was designed to wound" myth, it's not bad. The wound argument was invented to sell the concept to the brass and Congress (an argument which had been going on since WWII), but it was never actually true. 5.56mm is very effective at killing, as it was designed to do, and the true purpose of going to lighter ammunition was simply to carry and fire more rounds per person.
      There's also a slew of minor errors and nitpicks. AK-47 is a misnomer, the correct designation is simply AK (milled receiver) or AKM (stamped receiver). The Type 56 is more closely related to the SKS in its mechanical function, although it appears and is furnished like an AK. He misidentifies "green tip" as M85 instead of M855, which itself is technically a derivation of Belgian SS109 ammunition. The AK-12 program's final production model was deemed AK-15, but this isn't mentioned.
      But I won't harp on him for pronunciation of all the foreign words in the video, I can read a little Cyrillic and speak very poor French but I probably couldn't do much better.

    Great video, but there is one key piece of info you missed. The PK, AK, and SKS were all requested about the same time, they were meant to complement the squad you talked about earlier. The AK was supposed to fill the role of a SMG but have ammo interchangeably with the SKS. But the Soviets found that the AK could full the role of the SKS too, so they started to manufacture it over the SKS

    • @ChrisSmith-mi2zo
      @ChrisSmith-mi2zo Рік тому +11

      Just to add to this, the SKS was produced in 1945 and technically saw a little use at the end of WWII. The AK entered service in 1947 as an SMG like you say, but only when the stamped AKM was produced in 1956 was it used in the role of a rifle and made standard, replacing the SKS.

    • @ToriusHeart

      @Turgz Рік тому

      @Doom The RPD replaced the DPM at squad level alongside the other 7.62x39 weapons. The PK replaced the carriage mounted Maxim at platoon level.
      The PK was issued to the support squad of a platoon which included the grenadier (RPG gunner) the Sniper (SVD replaced the PU Mosin), and platoon leaders. As well as radioman etc.
      The RPD and later RPK was issued to the rest of the platoon's squads which were called the assault squads. These had the Riflemen (AK) and so-called hand held machine gunners (RPD/RPK).

    The thing about 5.56 being "designed to wound instead of kill" is completely false. All rounds tumble on impact. The reason that 5.56 is so special is that a soldier can carry much more of it without sacrificing too much lethality. The lesser recoil also makes it easier for someone to put multiple rounds on target.

      The STG was actually designed to use already existing ammo and magazines in use in MKb42 rifles. So in other words STG magazines are actually MKb magazines.

    I see you did some cursory research, but fell for a few popular misconceptions.
    1) Mikhail didn't develop the AK-47 out of nowhere on his first try. He tried to design several types of firearms for different weapons trials (sometimes as part of the team, sometimes heading it) and was consistently rejected before finding success with the AK-47.
    2) There's a lot of back and forth about the development and adoption of 7.62x51mm, the FAL and the M14 with a lot of bitter piss and vinegar poured on the M14 we ultimately got. It's really not a terrible weapon and it was selected largely due to better resilience in arctic conditions. A lot of people who generally do know what they're talking about still hold this view, but in my opinion you'd have to intentionally misread history to get there. The M14 did have huge problems during and after development, but there were reasons for the adoption of both it and it's caliber beyond the US Ordnance Board being dumb, corrupt or lacking imagination.
    3) 5.56mm wasn't designed to wound. There may have been some cope rationale about the secondary benefits of wounding an enemy but really it's about tricking physics. You see, the big advantage is lighter ammunition, lighter gun and lighter recoil. But in order to not have performance be completely useless, they found that at high enough velocity the small caliber bullet tumbles and fragments. This doesn't deliver the same power as say 7.62x51mm, but by stopping inside the target instead of plowing through it is able to transfer a larger proportion of the energy it has. This is similar to the concept of using hollow-point handgun ammunition for self defense, only while retaining the use of FMJ ammunition as required under the Hauge Convention. Soviets doubled down on this concept with 5.45x39mm by adding a hollow cavity under the bullet jacket primarily to shift the center of gravity towards the back for better ballistics, but it also allows the bullet's nose to crush or bend on impact so that it can veer off and tumble more reliably inside the target.
    All of this is to make up a bit for the disparity from moving away from full size battle rifle cartridges, and they still aren't as powerful, but plenty lethal. Intermediate calibers are absolutely designed to kill as much as possible within their size/weight/recoil constraints.
    4) The AK-74 is a bit more than a re-chambered AK-47 with a different magazine, although that is possible. While it works pretty much the same way, the AK-74 was re-designed completely from the inside out with very few parts backwards interchangeable with the AKM (which was the stamped steel AK-47 in widespread use at the time).
    Some of this was done on purpose because the USSR was actually looking to license the design to other socialist countries already using AKM derivatives, so that they would have to pay to use new tooling which the USSR wanted a fortune for. To clarify this wasn't for patents, but rather a comprehensive technical data package (plans, tooling and expert assistance), which was common practice for aircraft and armored vehicles as well. Several countries like Bulgaria and East Germany forked up a good chunk of foreign reserve currency for this task which the USSR badly needed in the 1970s and 1980s, but Romania is a notable exception. They reverse engineered a local design based on their existing locally made AKMs which was adapted to the new caliber and magazine pattern. Poland also designed their own just in time for communism to collapse and for the whole project to end up being pointless.
    5) The use of the AK-74 nowadays is actually kind of rare outside of ex-USSR nations. 5.45mm came pretty late in the game and partially due to the licensing fees few countries really wanted to adopt it or pay for the new rifle design. 7.62x39mm remains by far the more common rifle cartridge worldwide and is still abundant within Russian stockpiles. We are seeing plenty of 74s in use in the current Russo-Ukrainian war but that's pretty much the exception. Everyone else has for the most part either stuck with 7.62x39mm or moved on to 5.56mm which is far more abundant and with a far more fleshed out developmental ecosystem.
    6) The SKS was not the Soviet equivalent to the M1 Garand, that would have been the SVT-40. Instead the SKS would have been a replacement for the M44 Carbine, putting itself as more of an equivalent to the M1 Carbine. This is kind of strange since it is obviously much bulkier than the M1 Carbine, and it really didn't have a place in Soviet infantry doctrine once the AK-47/AKM came along. It was licensed out and saw a lot of success particularly with the Chinese, but was always kind of an odd duck. The Chinese actually used it rather than the AK as the basis for their Type 81 family of assault rifles, so there's that.

      They are not misconceptions, they are just the same old tired 20th century tropes. Western idea of the SKS is a misconception. SKS was a field army carbine, supported by RPD as LMG and SG-43 as field MMG. AK was a mechanized army select fire carbine, supported by unified GPMG PK-M platform. SKS /RPD had their place during the development of the entirely new industrial process that AK/PK required, a process which took a decade to complete.

      Thanks for your interesting comments. You explain something I've wonder about for a long time, as to why there is no "milspec" AK. I assumed in the interest of "socialist brotherhood" the Soviet Union would be glad to license the AK47, and the AK74 free of charge is for no other reason that to have massive standardized production capability.
      It's east to forget some of the Warsaw Pact countries were actually richer per capita than the USSR and Russia was more than willing to milk them, socialist brotherhood or not.

Also that smaller bullet is travelling at a higher velocity. The thinking was more along the lines of being able to carry more ammo and having less recoil.

    556/5.45 main advantage is weight savings which translates into soldier loadouts being much higher.
    100 rnds of 308 in mags = same weight as 330 rnds of 556 loaded.
    5.45 is even noticably lighter than 7.62x39 let alone x54r.
    AKs were not cheap to produce, AKM stamped receivers were cheaper to produce, but still required large complex factories.
    Many were sold cheap as surplus post Soviet Union or given away to friendly nations as aid deflating the market and making them sell cheap.

    On the German squad logistics: it's absurd to think the rifle and machine gun may as well use different cartridges because one uses stripper clips, the other belts. It still massively simplifies industrial and logistical operations. The point is that it removes a whole layer of complexity in the logistical network.
    Any frontline soldier can load a belt or a clip. It's very simple to allocate those rounds. Also, most of the actual firepower was in the machine gun. A rifleman might carry 50 rounds. A machinegunner, far more.

    The development of the StG-44 was a revolution in land warfare. It’s impact was on the same level as the jet-engine, proximity-fuse, and the XXI submarine. Each one made everything that came before irrelevant.
    BTW- many firearms historians now doubt that Kalashnikov actually had anything to do with the AK-47. The true developer was almost certainly the German genius firearms designer Hugo (?) Schmisser who happened to have been conveniently kidnapped by the NKVD and forcible relocated to the Soviet Union to work for the USSR and magically never credited with any future designs. He worked at the same time as the Kalashnikov came into existence. Schmisser was never allowed to return to his homeland in Germany, and as I said, never actually credited with any work, what do you think he was doing for those 20 years?

      This is a myth. The AK was designed and prototyped at factory No 2 in Kovrov. Kalashnikov didn't move to Izhevsk (where Hugo was detained) until 1948, when the AK-47 was being ordered already.

Also Kalashnikov made the original sketch’s for the assault rifle that bears his name, but ones it was approve it’s development was taken away from him and completed by another Soviet designer whose name escapes me. It was during this time that I suspect Schmisser could have been used to complete the refinement of the rifle and evolved into its publicly announced form.
      I always considered this a conspiracy theory myself. But slowly I am beginning to think that there is something to it. The dates and projects line up very nicely. Plus what was he doing there then? And why didn’t Kalashnikov ever design anything else? It’s too convenient to be a convenience.

      @@WorshipinIdols He was the lead designer of the AKM and the AK-74 project, as well as the PK series of belt fed machine guns(after the completion of the AK-47). The AK bolt locking system is fundamentally different than the STG 44 or Hugo's previous designs, as it uses a long stroke piston and a rotating bolt. Mikhail Kalashnikov however, had already used that long stroke gas piston rotating bolt combo in his previous design, a self-loading rifle that lost out to the SKS. In addition he also drew inspiration from the M1 Garand's design, which uses a long stroke gas piston and a rotating bolt. One of these weapon designers has a history behind the design of the AK and the other does not.

    I went thru basic training during the late 70s and was told somewhat repeatedly it's better to wound than to kill -- not out of humanity -- because a wounded soldier exhaust more of the opponent's human capital in giving assistance and reduce fighting power. so this video got it right in this aspect.

    I've never heard this argument for adopting 5.56 before. All I've ever heard about it before is that people liked the idea of carrying more ammo for the same weight.
