You need both as a local "nobody" singer... Local venues and audiences are going to judge you against the famous recordings... Your own sound would be for your own songs. Unless of course your interpretation of the covers is actually better... For example... Keith Richards once said... "I wrote Tumbling Dice... but Linday (Ronstadt) owns it"...
