Not my type of game, nor a game I would normally watch a video of, but I have to hand it to you, your videos are excellent. Your narration is A+, the editing is excellent, the video format (especially the 60s TL;DR at the start) is wonderful to manage audience expectations. Keep it up!

I was curious about this game as I will be acquiring a steam deck in the near future and have a history of enjoying 4x space games (even though they weren't called that when I started playing them). I appreciate how your review gives good information for decision making (especially the never pay full price bit) and is going to play a role in whether I ultimately decide to get this game. Based on your review it seems like a modern iteration of Malfador Machinations Space Empires IV. That was the game I grew up on and this seems like a modern version that is simplified in some areas and expanded in others. If you have never played Space Empires IV and are not seeking graphic based entertainment it might serve as a lighter introduction to this genre. I say that as it is much easier to step away from Space Empires IV and come back when life allows it. It would also be neat to see you do a review of Space Empire IV as a look into the past video. It is still available on Steam. Thank you for your review, if I decide to play Stellaris it will likely have been influenced by how you presented this review and its information.
@variable10x43 Thank you for your kind words, I'm glad you found the video useful. I've found Space Empires IV on Steam, I can also see there is a Space Empires V, do you think that IV is better than V? If you do end up purchase Stellaris please do come back and let us know how you find it. Sometimes the comments section of these videos is more useful to players than the video itself when we all share our experiences!
I have only played Space Empires IV gold edition. If I recall correctly that was the peak of Malfador Machinations game design, there was a reason I didn't get the 5th edition (not that I can recall it over a decade and a half later). And if I do purchase Stellaris I will come back after getting some time in on it, so that it isn't a surface level reaction. Thanks for the interaction.
Greatest review that exists for this game. This is exactly what I needed. All the beginner guides go into depth about every little menu icon and never talk about WHAT THE FUCK THIS GAME IS ACTUALLY ABOUT! Thank you so much for this.
Stellaris is such a niche game I can’t in good conscience recommend it to anyone, if you know you know and that’s all I can say about it haha. I love stellaris.
I have the game with all the DLCs and don't regret getting it one bit. The possibilities are endless and for a sci fi like myself this game is godsend. It creates a sense of wonder few games have made me feel. Also I believe that among all the Paradox games, this one is the easiest to learn, since thing are evolving organicaly and there is a logical path for everything you have to do, And lastly of course the base game itself is more that enough to give you a good time, but if your have the money consider buying the DLCs. They give a lot of flavour and variety.
I am a long time off and on player of Stellaris. Maybe once a year I download the updates and play it a little. All the "depth" usually distills down to many hours of play only to find you lost fifty moves ago but didn't know it. There are a few bugs they never seem to fix either. Like one of the most basic mechanics of fleet combat can suddenly start reporting incorrect battle results. Or you load a saved game and all the numbers in your empire are screwed up and your formerly balanced economy nose dives into revolt and rebellion. Sometimes the jobs on planets get randomly shuffled around and creates unemployment where there was none before. After seeing these ancient bugs still there I sadly put the game away and wonder if it will be fixed next year.
@gregmarsters2434 I too play the game perhaps once a year (I'm due to fire it up again soon!) but the difference is I don't know enough to realise the issues you say exist as the game is so vast and confusing to me. It's disappointing to hear about the repeat bugs, especially since the game isn't far off 10 years old.
@@marcusyeo2197 thank you that means a lot! I shall keep going and please let me know if there are any other games you think could be reviewed in this way, suggestions are always very helpful!
So you know how you’ll sometimes see a question on Reddit or something that says like “What game/film do you wish you could experience again for the first time”? Well I’m in my first game of Stellaris and I can already tell this is that game for me.
the simplified resource system is what kinda pushed me away. also the simplified planet management. these parts play more like a "paradox spreadsheet simulator" rather than a video game
@@twiglets2 so I'm used to real time economies like distant worlds universe, Stellaris, or the x3 series. As far as planet Management I miss the old stellaris planet UI (if I'm not misremembering it used to be different) where buildings and population and stuff were represented on a tile map. The new system seems too much like a list Gonna try the game out again though, maybe this time I'll get addicted
It sounds fun but extremely intimidating as well!!! Any advice on if I got the game and was worried about being overwhelmed by all the menus and details of playing that you’ve gone over in this video?
@detroitsmash1501 There are many good tutorials on UA-cam that will help you learn! Unfortunately they are all quite long as there is no quick way to learn the game, but the good news is that even when learning and you are a bit confused, the game is still very much enjoyable!
@@twiglets2 confusion equals fun? Lol either way the space battles look awesome got some time to kill before Spider-Man comes out thanks for the reply!
Overall a Positive take on stellaris, more informative than opinionated which is not always a good thing for a review, after all you WANT the perspective of the reviewer, aka to know thier true opinion. However a balanced review is not bad. As a stellaris content producer (you tube content) and long time player, i do agree with most of this review. DLC could definitely be priced a little lower in most cases. Though once i got dlc i could no longer play the vanilla experience unless i was making a video on it. Other than some minor things I feel this was a pretty good review. Thumbs up. Great editing btw.
@@volairen thank you for your honest words. I'm curious which dlcs you would recommend players go for first, or indeed which are your personal favourites! I get a bit overwhelmed with them all to be honest
@@twiglets2 You should; it's a great device. I'm finally playing Cyberpunk 2077 after 2 years of waiting with the release of this V2.0 and the DLC, I love it. I'm not saying it's a great RPG, but delving into this universe is fantastic. I'm also reading Neuromancer by William Gibson at the same time, for sure I'm having a great time. Right now, there is a good discount on Soviet Republic (Steam), highly recommended! Good day, sir!
@twiglets2 sorry i didn't see this! I can't help too much because I haven't played Stellaris yet. But it's in my backlog. I've heard stellaris is much more complex. But I liken endless space to civ. The ship customization makes combat fairly interesting. Is my hilite.
@BlueBoxRaven they've recently added the ability to play the same empire co-op with up to 3 other friends which I believe is a game changer that has largely gone under the radar. Not sure if GC lets you do that?
Pick it up with the best rated DLC's (seriously, some are NOT good and some are vital) on a heavy Steam sale. This is the biggest and wildest space 4X out there, and for folks that grew up on MOO2 its a must-have in the collection.
@@twiglets2 All DLC's rated "Mostly Positive" or "Positive" are good. Worst one overall would be Astral Planes. Personally I never purchased Megacorps, just because its not the playstyle I want from a 4X and adding it fundamentally changes the power balance of underlying mechanics.
Awesome video! I had Stellaris in my Steam library for a few years I think and recently started playing; it sucked me in _big_ time, and yah... now I consider myself to be a bit of a fanboy of sorts. Having said that... I really enjoyed this video because you addressed the whole lot perfectly I think. Really enjoyed myself here. Gonna check out your channel next but then you'll have to excuse me because I got a senate to 'run' (ahem) :P
@ShelLuser Thank you for the kind words! I feel very much the same way about this game, I keep coming back to it and find it absorbing. It surprised me when I first realised as I wasn't expecting it, but this is probably my favourite game!
At this point being handed Stellaris for the first time and expecting to get some enjoyment from playing it in less than 2 days hard learning is like being handed a 7 dimensional Rubik's Cube with 37 to the N faces existing in 42 to the N planes across 12 dimensions, It has mechanics inside mechanics hidden in sub menus inside sub menus. Some of which are vital - others are not. No real way of knowing which is which. Luckily I got it when it first came out and my on-boarding to this state was gradual. But I dare not leave the game for longer than 6-8 weeks because if I do - there is no way I could pick it back up again without that learning overhead. And I'd probably not bother.
@PaulRoneClarke it is complex, though I believe it possible for a new player to enjoy the game without really understanding what they're doing. It's personal preference of course but expanding your empire and reading all the stories that pop up along the way is fun!
I really enjoy Stellaris, but... The game is constantly evolving. Stellaris as it stands now is vastly different from the earliest version, and the Developers continue to tweak and refine game mechanics as time goes on. That means that the Stellaris you know you enjoy may be rather different after a given patch or DLC, possibly requiring you to relearn the game, or even altering elements with which you were comfortable. I suggest new players interested in but uncertain about Stellaris watch some recent gameplay, to get a feel for how it feels. That said, Stellaris has enormous depth and replayability, so assuming you decide to give it a go, you may expect to get a lot out of it. =^[.]^=
I had a demo of this some time ago, however for me there is way too much reading of the dialog. If it had voice actors it would have been great. This one design is why I never bought it. Your video is a brilliant description of the game however.
@Myterriers At first I enjoyed reading the discoveries etc but the novelty ran out quickly and now I pretty much ignore them. Your idea of voice actors would be very enjoyable indeed! Maybe I'll make something up myself and release a mod
Just found your channel watched two of your reviews they're very well written. Can I ask just for fun what is your favorite strategy game and also what is your favorite paradox strategy game?
@Nemmy_Wemmy Thank you! I hope you found them useful. That's a tricky one! Favorite...my heart says battle for middle earth but my head says Rise of Nations. For Paradox it's close but got to say Stellaris, however Hearts of Iron 4 is excellent too! What about yourself??
@@twiglets2 I'd say my favorite strategy game would be civilization 3 just because nostalgia and fond memories. Although I could say kessen 2/3 even tho they're also rather old but that's fine lol. As for paradox I can't say yet, I only recently got a PC so I'm just really dipping my toes in. I had Stellaris on console but I didn't play much (I haven't dived into it yet further than the empire creator lol). Recently got it on PC as well. Been eyeing hearts of iron 4 but haven't bought it yet. Watched loads of gameplay on ck3 and and hoi4. But the only paradox game I've put any time into at all is age of wonders 4 and I've enjoyed that a good bit.
@@Nemmy_Wemmy ahh I've not tried age of wonders yet! Some were saying the game was a bit broken and required adjustment, have you had any issues with it?
@stroopwafelfalafel4194 I don't think you'll regret it, but the DLCs add a lot of content so I advise learning the base game first before switching those on, but good luck if you go all in with everything!
@@twiglets2 Thanks! Before I bought any DLCs, I played a couple full games to make sure I actually liked it. Since I did, I decided to buy everything else.
@anniew4105 a very good question! All three are very deep games, but I would argue that both hoi4 and ck3 are both deeper than Stellaris. Stellaris is still a deep game, but a lot of that depth is in the story and the journey, whereas hoi4 and ck3 are just bursting with mechanics that you need to learn
This is awesome! I have been so bored with Civilization because of how vanilla and repetitive it feels after 10+ games. This seems like I won't have that problem for a long time
They never made ground combat interesting, and actually turned it into more of a chore than anything else. One thing I didn't like is they did away with distinct "Generals" for ground forces, and "Admirals" for fleets and instead just have "Commanders" for both now. To me that's kind of unfortunate. Maybe it's easier that way for simplicity's sake but it takes away a bit from the immersion imho.
@twiglets2 I was playing Commonwealth of Man games vs AI last year and then more recently started playing again over the last couple months and noticed it had changed. So some time in the last year they changed it.
@THEOUTCASTCREATIVE Thank you, I hope it was useful! A buddy of mine has just started to play Stellaris, they usually player master of Orion and are enjoying Stellaris. They don't think it's "better" as such, just an enjoyable game, so hopefully you will feel the same!

The late game lag essentially kills what is in practice an extremely joyous experience, especially with mods. Whats the point of making a galactic empire if 1 year passes slower than real 1 year
@@kalimatronix True that, nothing fixes lag like purging of foul xenos. besides, i detest, i loathe, I FIND IT REPULSIVE, to have any other race but Humans exist in my universe.
It became too complicated for me. I prefer what it was on launch when you could develop whatever FTL engine you want instead of getting a good draw. It made the game a lot cooler and more strategic. Now it just seems like they focused too much on RP like Crusader Kings and dumb minor mechanics.
@nicholasgutierrez9940 I kind of wish I could play the game how it was originally as it is a bit too much for me now. I enjoy the game but I can't play DLC anymore as the base game is complex enough on its own!
@@twiglets2I recently bought it with utopia. I’m a bit torn, because on the one hand I like the RP elements but it feels like I’m putting in the effort to imagine it and the game doesn’t really follow along. Also spreadsheet sim isn’t fun to me, and from my experience if you want to not bother about economy you can kind of get away with it. I’m a bit disappointed tbh bc in my head , yeah I’ve built a slave empire, treat this civ as livestock, but all I see is ‘green food icon go up’. I’m left to imagine everything else myself. There’s no rebellion or popup. Battle thralls, livestock, indentured servitude, chattel slavery: all these options but what do they matter/how are they different beside a number on the list? Espionage straight up does nothing, interesting techs are locked til the end game meaning most games you don’t even get to them Bc like CK late games becomes tedious and laggy with a whole empire. Also disappointed in religion. Coming from CK where it’s such a big part, I feel like they could add a whole religion system to Stellaris that could impact your culture and values, but as it stands materialism vs spiritualism is just so bland. Sorry this came across really negative, but I actually love certain parts about stellaris, just sometimes feel like my imagination cant do *all* the work, you get me? I’d like to hear your thoughts. :)
@Amonabus Interesting to hear your take on it as you've had the game for so long. Have you sunk a lot of hours into it? Is there anything specific that's made you stop playing?
@@twiglets2 A lot of hours. This game has no soul. It's legit a spreadsheet simulator. The fact that the galaxy screen is by far the easiest to default to and the devs are obsessed with menus and popups. They even updated the game to have less characters*leaders* available to the player during a playthru.
What you have here is a 19 minute and 47 second ad for the game and a large number of Paradox paid people claiming its a good review. Stellaris is a crappy board game placed in space. The game is full of bugs, game ending glitches, and events that destroy game play. After overcoming the silliness of having space highways in the void of the galaxy you will expand and may even fight a small war or two before everyone joins up in massive alliances that basically prevents wars. Then if a war does break out between huge alliances war exhaustion will end the war at status quo before ever finishing. Therefore, the game just becomes a boring slogfest of research and building, waiting for the "endgame" event... which will be the biggest anti-climactic thing in any game. It is usually defeated before it even reaches you, or before you can help fight it. Waste of money, and this is even before the Paradox modus operandi of creating a half-finished game and then selling you the rest in multiples DLCs. Cost you over $100 just for a base game that sucks. You were warned.
Bruh it’s possible for people to enjoy a game without being a PDX shill chill out. I get your point buts it bloody delusional at this point thinking they’re all paid opinions 🙄
I would imagine its only worth it if you have a brand new computer with very high clock speed cpu. due to stellaris' outdated mostly single threaded bottlenecked engine its built on.
I am considering buying the game after I got some game money I could use. The only thing I am worried about is wasting my money for a game that I have zero skill in
@boiitbespamtongspamton4518 If this is your first grand strategy game then there are no easy choices as they are all complex and so it's a risk to make a purchase. Stellaris is worth considering because although it is a difficult game to master you can pause it and play it on a slow speed. Plus remembering my own first experience, the game is story rich and generally epic, even if you're not sure what you are doing. There may be better games out there for you to spend your money on, but generally speaking Stellaris doesn't disappoint if you have a genuine interest after you've looked into a few reviews and get an idea of what the game is about.
@twiglets2 After a little bit of more research and watching game play, I think I will definitely have the game. For a while i've played games where it ends, I don't want it to end, especially if I end with getting people to survive. Do what I did, get it cheap from Instant Gaming, I've saved almost 2/3 of the price there :-D What DLCs from what I don't have yet would you recommend?
Not my type of game, nor a game I would normally watch a video of, but I have to hand it to you, your videos are excellent. Your narration is A+, the editing is excellent, the video format (especially the 60s TL;DR at the start) is wonderful to manage audience expectations.

@@BT10e you are most welcome! Glad it was useful

@___.51 I gifted it to a friend earlier this week. Little do they know I've just ruined their life muahahaha
@dimitristsipis4841 do you have a preferred race?
Is the latest dlc worth it?

@ALLISMIND I hadn't thought of it that way before, glad it was useful!
the simplified resource system is what kinda pushed me away. also the simplified planet management. these parts play more like a "paradox spreadsheet simulator" rather than a video game
@jimster1111 that's interesting. Do you mean simplified compared to something specific, or just too simple in general?
@@twiglets2 so I'm used to real time economies like distant worlds universe, Stellaris, or the x3 series. As far as planet Management I miss the old stellaris planet UI (if I'm not misremembering it used to be different) where buildings and population and stuff were represented on a tile map. The new system seems too much like a list

@detroitsmash1501 There are many good tutorials on UA-cam that will help you learn! Unfortunately they are all quite long as there is no quick way to learn the game, but the good news is that even when learning and you are a bit confused, the game is still very much enjoyable!

Great game but my issue with the game is that close to the end time runs extremely slow.

This is the only game I ever saw where the curve of players is ascending continually
@thesmilingman3590 they must be doing something right...!
@Raycheetah Wise words, thank you for sharing your thoughts!

Stellaris is worth considering because although it is a difficult game to master you can pause it and play it on a slow speed. Plus remembering my own first experience, the game is story rich and generally epic, even if you're not sure what you are doing.
