- The Tidal Wave is a unique Jakobs shotgun that is available as a quest reward for the Uncle Teddy quest. It has a unique firing pattern that is a callback to TK's Wave in Borderlands 1.
Being a Jakobs shotgun, it is at least viable in many mobbing scenarios. However, it is very weak compared to most other unique or high rarity shotguns.
Even with the buff the weapon got from the community patch, it is still a relatively weak weapon that is not at all fun to use because of its inconsistencies. The patch added base damage and magazine size to the weapon, but the spread still holds it back.
The community patch has the option to replace the weapon with the Flayer from Borderlands The Pre Sequel, so I plan to take a look at that option as well.

Right so, If you go back and look at the card of the original Tidal wave and the "buffed" version, you actually see that the buffed version has 2 pellets less and less dmg, about 10% less. But it got a lot more magazine size + consumption of only 1 ammo per shot. So in the UCP version of the weapon you wouldn't really be comparing it to the Coach gun, as this is now acting like a single barrel shotgun ;)

Hyperion stole the design for the tidal wave but then jakobs manufactured it 🤔
And if you side with Una you get a gun that Uncle Teddy made for her, which is made by Hyperion........

Version 4.1 of the community patch just came out, and the Tidal Wave got buffed more: Reduced Tidal Wave's Bullet Spread by ~60% and made it fire from the middle of the arc instead of the peak. Doubled its Projectile Speed, gave it 30% Critical Hit Damage and more stacked Projectiles. Reduced Magazine Size slightly.
Hopefully that'll make it a fair bit more effective!

Yeah, I subbed in late so was just rewatching old videos during his hiatus.
I've noticed that you seem to have dropped the 'Zer0 supremacy' thing from your older videos. I've never complained then, nor am I now, but it's just something I noticed. You seem to be very... open to other characters, like when you actually acknowledged Krieg during the Midnight Star video.
Zer0 is still far and away the best designed and most fun character to play in the game, by a wide, wide margin.
Maya and Axton are fun, but not even close to as fun as Zer0.
Krieg and Gaige are borderline playable.
Sal is unplayable.
It's not difficult to get crits with a controller, just difficult to get crits with the lower fps and fov older consoles suffer from. Molmf used a controller for a very long time, and had possibly the best aim I've ever seen in this game.
Molmf maybe still a bit Zero favourable but he has a point.
Maya and Axton are quite "vanilla" in playstyle, except maybe chucking and weird Maya kinetic reflection builds.
Gaige is one of the worst designed characters I've ever seen in a videogame.
Cecil Symes Again, never complained about it. I actually adore how this game seems to allow people to main whatever character they want.
I am personally a bit biased to Krieg myself, but that's only because 'strategy' holds very little meaning to me. Others are more tactical or willing to do stuff for others, so obviously Zer0, Axton and Maya (respectively) would appeal to them.
But Sal is a walking glitch, and Gaige is for people who can't be bothered to aim.
I tried to like Gaige and Krieg, I really did.
I don't like Gaige's anarchy mechanic, the loss of accuracy makes things less fun. Her action skill is boring. I like the idea of a shock based damage character, tho.
I can't get over Krieg's action skill being unfun to me, too. I like some of his skills, like the one that makes the grenade drops more common- but I want an action skill.
I know some people like them, I just don't.
I'm excited for the wanderlust.
I love the Tidal wave, its my main stacking gun with Gaige. All of the inconsistencies that you listed with zer0 Gaige covers really well.
Anarchy for damage, close enough and the nth degree for better bullet pattern and DT to give you the ability to gank.
As to why use this over any other jacobs shotgun, its possible with gaige to one shot multiple enemies when her skills line up and you have slag, at a massively reduced ammo cost.
If you ever decide to do a gaige playthrough i highly recommend it, very fun and satisfying.
Too bad he doesn't like her so he probably won't.
It looks like the pellets spawn too far forward maybe it's velocity but occasionally is looks like the bullets are shot through enemys and only hit on the bounce back.
Dude I got a perfect Flayer on my Aurelia from EOS (Hyperion stock, Jakobs grip, Torgue sight, and Doc's prefix). It's awesome.
All thouse bouncy bullets... The weapon simply has the general problem of a wide horizontal spread pattern like many others. I wonder if it would be any good on anarchy Gaige though, since close enough tends to have a really nice synergy with ricocheting bullets because it gets them to home towards the next enemy without the damage penalty.
Darthplagueis13 a quad or ravager still works much better with it obviously, but with the low damage from the tidal wave and the bullets doing half damage, its really not great
Darthplagueis13 on Gaige you should be using guns with a lot of pellets.
The Zombie Island of Dr.Ned, my favorite Borderlands DLC.
You may be just about the only one with that opinion. "The Secret Armory of General Knoxx" seems the most common #1 Borderlands DLC, with the main complain there being limted fast travel. Still I think we call all agree that every other DLC in Borderlands history is better than "Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot".
Hey Luke, you considering uploading a new playthrough using the community patch? I'd love to see you use weapons other than Lyuda/Pimp. I series where you farm legendary drops from each boss before continuing would be a really great concept and allow you to use weapons you would normally avoid, perhaps a new genre for the game and breathe some life back into it.
I'm going to do a playthrough once I get done farming all the gear I want.
Still want a few more things, most that perfect Hide.
Also want to look for a few more guns- Pitchforks, maybe a Quad and Twister.

Maybe I'm going to call it before you do it, though it's not going to be surprising, but the Flayer replacement option is just superior to the patched Tidal Wave.
In my opinion, it's just more reliable, though I don't mind this version on Gaige because of its interaction with Close Enough and Anarchy.
Luke you are probably gonna love the Flayer with Zero, but is it good with other characters?
Also can I request that you do the Madhouse after the flayer? :) that thing must have gotten a buff, right?
On the XBone (no community patch), gaige can one-shot bunker with the tidal wave. Also useful for saturn and uranus.
Alright, I have a question in regards to the patch. I've seen you using the option to refill ammo in one purchase to check whether or not the patch is active, and I want that option myself. I checked it off in the filter tool like the replacers for the Flayer and stuff which do work, yet the refill option doesn't. Is there something I'm missing or a step I skipped?
I looked through all of your videos and haven't found one showcasing a specific Pearlescent rocket launcher (don't remember the name, probably from Tiny Tina's DLC). After the projectile landed, it would launch another one vertically and explode with a blast radius much larger than the Nukem. It's probably the weapon with the largest AoE in the game. Do you think you could take a quick look at it?

You can b0re Saturn with Tidal Wave, I accidentally shot towards Saturn while jumping from the roof where the chest is and suddenly b0re sound appears and killed Saturn with no problems!

There's this weird guy on youtube thinking that when you aim to get max damage out of jakobs shotguns you should aim from afar.
He also thinks it applies very much to the Tidal Wave, that one gun that is supposed to shoot like a tidal wave, spread wide unlike coach gun which he compared it to, for some weird unknown reason.
I mean, yea the damage is kind of equal, but Tidal Wave is a bit different in matters of how to use ._.
Unless i'm completely lost, the tidal wave's dmg and pellet count was lowered(pre patch 344438x13, with patch 318063x11) but the other stats were boosted(accuracy, firerate, magsize increase). Shame. I never liked the weapon so i wouldn't use it either way, but when they added the flayer i was happy. Had a lot of fun with that one

Now for the real question: Since that's also the quest where you get the Lady Fist, why the hell would you ever take this gun over it?

PC only, since the UCP is essentially a mod.

Took me too long to notice how my laptop can easily run this game. How is this game able to run on the Window's XP series? On any note, I can experience the UCP for myself; in all of it's perks! 😅👍

I find it’s decent at lower levels and actually pretty good vs lower level loaders as you can hit 3 crits at the same time
Nobody plays lower levels though, and if you wan't a gun that can hit 3 crits on loaders then use the Hydra or even the veruc or Lyuda

Most likely, the boss is such a pushover when using a weapon that isn't so trash that even the community patch can't make it decent.

I disagree that zer0 is the best suited character for the flayer given maya's accelerate and chain reaction which has the potential to extremely boost the usefulness of the gun especially with 10/5 in chain reaction. Another character I would see doing good with this weapon is gaige especially with her close enough and anarchy skills which could very easily boost the damage output of the weapon and due to the fact that the bullets ricochet anyways, close enough would work all the time (though I'm not sure if it would still take the damage penalty). I think one thing hindering the efficiency of the gun with your build is tw0 fang, which makes you spend an extra shot which has a very low chance to hit anything from the high recoil of the first weapon.
Two Fang definitely helps the weapon.
Man of Low Moral Fiber the UCP fixes the perks of the Axton's Milirary Specialist COM and changes them to shotgun buffs, aswell as providing a huge buff to Duty Calls, you may try the Flayer with a Military Axton
Patched Tidal Wave deals less damage than the Unpatched Tidal Wave.
