Its never fun to have to cut into drywall, but hopefully these instructions will make it a bit easier. Everybody has their own way of doing this. What other tips and tricks to do you guys know?

That is excellent. I have had similar issues and this step by step process is really helpful.

The "Pro" version of that knockdown works immensely better. I've found that knocking it down after closer to 10 minutes gives a much better result, without smearing everything flat.

I'll have to try the pro stuff next time. It seemed like all of my knockdown has s bit of a flat smeared look any, this this actually matched pretty well.

I like this technique. TBH, when I envisioned patching drywall, I was thinking of something less robust and more complex. Great tips. And, this is timely as I need to do this for my audio equipment. Oddly, I found the high-speed video of your sawing to be therapeutic. It's like watching a human power saw, LOL.

Hahahaha. I thought it looked pretty cool too.

Nice vid. In the past, for the deeper (thicker) layers of drywall mudding, i've used a 90 minute joint compound that sets really hard and quick so that the job can be done almost in 1-2 days.

The only thing holding that patch in place is the paper

I fully mudded around the perimeter. This is a very common method to repair a hole and it feels solid. Thanks for the comment!

What kind of primer did you use?

I've used a few different kinds. PVA usually. I'm not sure what I used for this video.

My wall is full of thermal insulation not hollow as in your video. That is a problem when you need to pass the wire upwards (or downwards) but that is more of a cable installation problem
The square patch you cut is held back in place by a strip of paper on each of the four sides and nothing else. Is that strong enough if someone happens to lean against the wall with his hand pushing right on the patch?
I need to pass a thin cable from the ground floor to the attic and my wall has the thermal insulation mentioned above. I could cut a thin slot in the wall (about 1/2" wide at most), remove a "stick" of sheetrock, press the cable into what becomes a trench full of wooly thermal insulation and reclose with the same piece of sheetrock. Is there a better way?
    Thank you for your suggestions

This is a pretty common technique to patch holes in drywall. I haven't pushed hard on it, but it seems pretty solid. You should be able to work around any insulation in the wall, even though it will increase the difficulty. I have wondered the same thing about making a thin trench. I would think you could do it and then fill with mud, tape, and then the feather the joint. You could try practicing on a piece of scrap to test your method.

No problem. I always respond to comments on all my videos, so just ask if you have more. I'm not a drywall expert by any means, but I might be able to help. I have all sorts of other content for you on the rest of my channel.

Thank you for this video. Why do sand the primer before the final paint?

I just like to make sure there isn't any additional unwanted texture. You could skip that if you want.

I have a question, what kind of material did you use for the texture? I mean spray

    • @HowIDoThingsDIY

It's just spray knock down texture. You can get it at the big box stores
