Turntable Latching Demo

Interesting and inspiring to see your video, I'm making a GWR turntable as well from the same Dapol kit.
It's a nice base to start off, and I try to implement Arduino technology to drive it, for the first time.
And as every new technology in the beginning it's mind blowing to learn, specially when it comes to electronics and programming, but as everything in life you have to put your shoulders against it to bear the fruit.
I always love to see things that are not strait out of the manufacturers box.
Anyway thanks for this inspiring video, on this lovely layout…

Cheers Gormo. Can't say I like the latching - bit bulky and fiddly for my taste, but it's your railway and your rules! One thing though, How do you get your turntable to turn so quietly? What mechanism did you use?

G`day Ray,
The mechanism is hybrid, cobbled together from bits and pieces. There is a motor, I found, which has it`s own metal gearbox and that drives a pulley and gear system made from Meccano. Thanks for the info and link, Gormo. Do you actually need a latching mechanism.? If it is just there to help alignment, then would it not be better to use electrical contacts beneath the rails to light bulbs?

G`day Ray,
The latching is absolutely necessary for this table as there is sideways play in the bridge caused by slack in the Mecanno gears. I have tried several methods to solve the problem and haven`t had any success until the latching method. This works and allows loco movements with absolute certainty that they won`t derail, even at speed. So for me, for this turntable, this is the way to go. I just need it to work. In the future I may try a scratch build turntable and apply some of the things I`ve learnt through trial and error, however for the moment, the latches are necessary for this table to work properly.

Wondering if there was a way of soldering a bit of spring wire to the outside of the approach rails that would just be enough friction to stop movement once the turntable rail hit it?
