Thank you for this. I went to take the winter air out of my drum set to put in new spring air. But the air compressor just kept running as if it were Cleatus being surprised by his probation officer with a cup in his hand. Now, thanks to this outstanding scholar, I can rest easy tonight knowing my air compressor just forgot how to reed.
great video. mine wouldn't go above 25PSI. tried replacing the foot valve and cold start valve as recommended in the troubleshooting section of the manual, no dice. I didn't even know there were reed valves on the unit until i saw this video. I opened it up and one reed valve was split in half; ordered two reed valves and installed them. The compressor moves right to 125 PSI, so your fix was spot on. Then when it went down to around 85 psi it tried to restart but failed. Your video mentioned that you replaced the cold start valve on your 2nd compressor to fix this issue; I was puzzled because the cold start valve on it was brand new. So I put the old cold start valve back in and she now starts back up. The new valve is identical to the old valve but she wont start up with the new valve but starts right up with the old valve. Strange, but got my compressor back working. Thanks again.
Never gave the cold start valve a thought. Mine is the snap ring type. I took it off the head and sprayed it with WD-40 and worked it a little. IT WORKS. Thanks so much for the advice and video.

I needed this video , I have that exact compressor from Harbor freight in Lansing, I don't understand the Reeds ,but the left side was broken , that valve needs a new O ring I think . Will need this video saved to help get my compressor running again.
I’m watching other guys take theirs apart like bro I know someone sells that part for less than $10. It’s not even worth rebuilding that relieve valve. Thanks for the video man.
Thank you so much!! I have the stalling problem on mine. I thought maybe it was an issue with the capacitor, but it seems like I will try this as well and also replace the Reed plates while I'm at it.
I replaced the cold start valve and circuit breaker still trips, I ordered a new American made circuit breaker coming in tomorrow. Ill repost the results. Thanks Update: Ok, so I replaced the reset circuit breaker and is now working like it should. If the valve replacement didnt work for you, next thing to replace is the circuit breaker. 👍
I have 1 of those that just crapped out after 10 years I had an issue of it not shitting down I would have to turn it off then turn it on to use it. 1 day I forgot to turn it off and it smells burnt but still worked until I went to start it again now nothing. Probably going to replace the motor if I can find a cheap 1
I guess I didn’t elaborate on that very much did I? Generally if the compressor will stall on restart with air in the tank and trip the breaker it’s that small relief valve. If it runs and runs and runs and doesn’t make much pressure and just gets hot it’s usually the reed valve. Now sometimes you can have both conditions so I just played it safe and ordered 2 of each part. Always good to have spares on hand.
great video, mine built up to like 80 lb of pressure and quit. the head and cylinder got hot as hell and started smoking! tore the head off bad Reed valves and the other gasket needs replaced also! can I get the other metal gasket along with the Reed valves?
Good video, thank you. I’ve been searching for a diagram of the exact way it goes together. I have all the parts but not sure the order of reassembly. What order did you put back together? Starting from the compressor itself, cylinder, then one thick metal spacer that has the indentation for a reed valve, then the other thick metal spacer to hold the other reed valve, then thin metal gasket then the head? In your video, that thick metal piece came off with the cylinder head, but when you reassembled it, it looked like you were just putting the head over all the parts, lining up the holes, and bolting back together? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, as I have reassembled it a few times, and it still doing the same thing. Turns on, makes a groaning sound, but does not start.
Thank you! Unfortunately, I do not recall the assembly order and no longer own these compressors. If I did, I would take one apart and send you pictures. I tried jumping on google to find a parts diagram but have come up empty so far.
I just picked one of these up for $100. It works but sounds like it is running rough/hard. My work horse compressor a 4gal kobalt quiet tech and I also got a little pancake compressor. But this one sounds way rough. Maybe I just have a bias but I'ma change the oil and pressure adjustment valve.
Also seems to take a little longer than the quoted 5-6min full time altho I only messed with it for about an hour before I decided I want to change the oil before I used it anymore.
I took a quick look but was unable to come up with anything. If you have the part number you might be able to contact them and ask for a quote for the part.
Any tips or tricks on how to keep that diaphragm in place when trying to put cover back on? It was taken off to drain the oil and now the seal isn't sitting down into the groove like it should so it leaks when it runs. I was going to mess with it again so I'm looking for videos. Did you happen to find out where to get a new one at?
I took that cover off to repair. The crank had bound on the piston (connecting) rod. Got that freed up. Now I can't get it to seat properly. I was thinking of trying to use caulk or "liquid gasket".
My compressor starts working and builds pressure up to 150psi but sometimes during work it will not start and won't keep tank charged. Sometimes it turns on only for a few seconds then goes quiet. Sometimes I hears something that it wants to start like air going somewhere through the pipe for about 2 second and then quiets and stays like that. Fails to keep up pressure in tank when I use it. Pressure goes low as 50psi but compressor doesn't start. Then I had to open drain valve to release remaining air pressure in the tank. Disconnect it from AC power for few minutes and it starts working again build up to 150psi again. I don't hear any air leaks. What could be wrong? How to fix it?
Please help. Mine will hold air when I fill it from another compressor. The pump will not fill the tank at all but will blow up a balloon when I disconnected the line from the tank. I traded the relief valve with a closed cap. Thanks.
That relief valve serves a purpose. I would replace it with a new one. I would also check the steel reeds in the compressor itself like I did in this video.
