    I wasn't even born when this game was played, but I've always loved watching 1970s and early 80s football games. No idea what it is that makes it so special. Perhaps the rawness of it? Muck laden pitches, socks rolled down, grainy imagery and the crackle of David Coleman's telephone commentary. Today it's so polished, antiseptic and bland. Even the recent World Cup final, which will probably go down in history as a classic had a manufactured feel to it - no heart at all. Yep, some terrific players were involved and some of the goals were very good, but ask me in a few months who played centre back for Argentina and I couldn't tell you. Ask me who played centre back for Argentina in the '78 final and Daniel Passarella rolls from the tongue.

    As a footie mad 10 year old at the time I fumed at Martin Chivers's lethargy. My dad said why don't England take shots on goal like "the foreigners". England didn’t score many goals at this time and were stuck in the past against such a brilliant team. Exposed over our technical deficiencies and lack of imagination and skill level. But at club level we won lots of European trophies. Very frustrating !!

This is the first time I've ever seen footage of this game, which after the lesson England were given at Wembley two weeks before was purely academic, especially given Ramsey's peculiar defensive tactics when we needed to win by two clear goals! I didn’t once hear David obsess about either managers’ tactical nous or the system in which his team is set for as opposed to the modern day near constant discussions during games( & over the previous 25 years of commentaries ) I recalled correctly how they simply described individual play as it happened, perhaps the players’ reactions or merits & refs’ decisions- & you watched it & made up your own mind rather than the progress of a game being akin to gridiron or chess ! Is this because we’re all so much more systematic than before ? Thanks for this brilliant quality presentation ( compared to much from Mexico 70) 😁👍

      Perhaps you never grasped the meaning of "commentator"?
      Anyone can simply describe actions, but then everyone can see themselves what is happening!
      A quality commentator needs to do far more than just inform the viewer about who is kicking the ball to whom!
      A football commentator needs to analyse what is happening and that is something that Coleman was never any good at, including his coverage of athletics.
      Kenneth Wolstenholme, even with his shortcomings, was a much better commentator.

    What a find! I was at the first leg at Wembley as an 8 year old. As others have said some great players and some physical ones…. Storey & Hunter in midfield! But unlike the last 30 odd years lacked a world class striker in Lineker- Shearer- Rooney- Kane mould.

  • @Seansaighdeoir
    @Seansaighdeoir 2 роки тому +17

    Many thanks for this.
    Largely academic after the way they were beaten in the first leg but such a negative line up. Storey and Hunter in midfield in a game they had to win makes no sense. The final ignominy of taking off your best attacker when you need a few goals says everything. It reeks of surrender.
    Sadly Germany appeared light years ahead here in terms of coaching, team work, being comfortable in possession and technical ability. England look ragged in comparison reduced at times to the long ball but if England had come on the back of a different result at Wembley who knows?
    The 72 quarter final defeat at Wembley rocked England's confidence. But rather than respond to that challenge and push on Sir Alf retreated into some sort of negative shell. There was no the difference in class between the teams this points to. England were largely unlucky in the first leg but this seemed to propagate some serious naval gazing.
    I don't think England ever really recovered from that. That initial defeat badly affected the team and Sir Alf who should have been replaced by like Clough at this point. The fact that the FA said no was the start of England's years in the wilderness.

      I was born in 1973 so this was before me but i have tried studying the period..let me challenge you..What would Clough have done with England specifically that other managers in this period failed to do?..I think he should have got the job with his supporting staff in 1977 and England would have mounted a serious bid for the 1982 WC..but how would he have played this England, what formation or players might he have gone with in the early to mid 1970s?

    • @Seansaighdeoir
      @Seansaighdeoir Рік тому +1

      @@kailashpatel1706 it's an interesting question.
      What Clough and Peter Taylor (they were really a team) would probably have done is tear up the rule book of the 70's.
      Football is tribal and the England team no different. Football is dominated by the press particularly the north west which is either Man U or Liverpool. Back in those days the cry to feature players from those teams was enormous. People making those shouts had little care for the actual football or the team.
      Clough and Taylor had a unique skill of taking often unfashionable players regarded as over the hill and building successful teams from them.
      It would have caused huge problems for those with vested interests in certain players - like leaving Beckham or Kane out of the team.
      To build a team is very different to just a group of individuals and Clough was v good at building teams. His team would have been interesting but his philosophy at odds with the FA / media consensus of the day because his philosophy would have put the team first regardless of who he upset or left out.

He used Casillas who was on the bench in his own club Real Madrid (he was used only in CL games as a starter), and Xavi who at age 34 was clearly passed his peak, and he paid the price. No disrespect to great Bobby Moore, but in 2 crucial games against W. Germany and Poland, Moore's mistakes cost 4 goals against those 2 teams, and yet Ramsey had said to Moore he wanted him to be England's captain in 1974 World Cup!!!! To be fair to Bobby Moore, his replacement in the return game against Poland (Norman Hunter) made the same mistake Bobby did in the 1-st leg. England was simply out of great players at that time, and after defeats against Brazil, and W. Germany in 1970 World Cup which England had a decent chance to win both games, the decline had begone.

    A fascinating match but rather depressing if you are an England fan. Ramsey was a great manager, but I don't understand his thinking here. Why would you play both Hunter and Storey in midfield when you need goals to go forward in the tournament and Martin Peters is available? David Miller called this match "appallingly negative" and one is tempted to agree. (Netzer said afterwards that half the England team had autographed his leg.) It's interesting to see Flohe strip the ball from Moore in the first half and Ball nearly lose his cool in the second, both ominous forecasts of what would happen in Katowice. England were better in the second half, and you have to wonder how much better still they could have been if Summerbee and Peters had started the match. Germany were a great side then, and it is lovely to watch them play. Their buildup is beautiful and they hit accurate, controlled passes even when under heavy pressure. Ramsey gets criticized for staying with his '66 men too long, but it should be noted that Schoen used three of his own '66 team in this match, Hottges, Held, and of course Beckenbauer.

    With a two goal deficit England travelled to Berlin for the 2nd leg of the Nations Cup quarter final to face West Germany on 13 May 1972 at the Olympic Stadium.
    Two weeks earlier West Germany had stunned England 3-1 at Wembley.Not many even the die hard English fans would place their bets on England overhauling a two goal deficit but then England's supremo Sir Alf Ramsey had opted strangely for a defensive strategy instead of gambling for an all out offensive in Berlin by selecting Peter Storey and Norman Hunter.
    No doubt it worked as Gunther Netzer was effectively bottled up but then the visitors were fighting a lost cause.With the Germans having a two goal advantage,it was England who had to score.But they didn't and all that was in the end was a face saving draw for Sir Alf's team which ended scoreless.So England were out of contention in the Nations Cup.

In my opinion, England, not USSR that was literally smashed by West Germany, deserved better to be playing in the 1972 final. By the way, two weeks later on a new Olympic stadium in Minich, West Germany crashed the Soviets 4-1 and then in the 1972 Euro final 3-0.

    What for me is interesting about this match and indeed football matches around the same period is simply looking at the demographic of the teams playing. The England squad going to Euro 2024 has players with heritage outside the United Kingdom. It is the same with Germany with players from a Turkish or African heritage. Practically all the squads going to Euro 2024 are now multi-heritage - a reflection of how Europe has changed in the last half century.

    As good as he allegedly was, Beckenbauer was never challenged: watch closely in ANY game he plays. Like Pirlo much later, he strolls around picking simple little passes, looking great, unruffled, nice clean kit - all while none of the opposition close him down. Too much respect? Put him under pressure, again like Pirlo, and you would see a different player and outcome. Considering Hunter and Storey were ankle biters, they never get close to Beckenbauer in this game, just to show him they were around.

    • @13muller9
      @13muller9 Рік тому +2

      Your comment is one of the most objective ones I've read. Beckenbauer no doubt was a great player. But I give the most credit to his greatness when he was playing in midfield in W. Cups 1966 and 70. As a Libero, he was the last player (beside the keeper) in his half, and it makes your job much easier to deliver accurate (mostly simple ones as you rightly pointed out) when nobody puts pressure on you. I read about Stefan Kovacs (Ajax manager in 1972 and 73) and his tactic for the game against Bayern: He had asked Cruyff to challenge Beckenbauer in order to disrupt Bayern's game plan that was built on Beckenbauer orchestrating Bayern's build up from the back, and it worked; Ajax won 4-0. To be honest I have watched that game entirely and don't remember that to be the case. Kovacs was a FIFA advisor in 1974 World Cup, and after watching the 1-st half of the final, he wanted to go to the Dutch dressing room and advise Rinus Michel or Cruyff to use the same tactic. But then he thought as a FIFA official, he had to be neutral, so he changed his mind and didn't go. Whether that tactic would have worked out or not, we don't know. In the same game, there is a scene when Cruyff is one on one against Beckenbauer and makes Beckenbauer to turn right and left as he has no clue what Cruyff is going to do, but instead of deciding to dribble Beckenbauer and score a potential goal, Cruyff decided to pass the ball to Rep which Meyer saved his poor shot. Rep has said thereafter, at one point he mentioned that scene and said Cruyff was afraid or cautious (can't remember the exact word) of Beckenbauer, and that is why he decided not to dribble him but pass the ball to Rep. According to Rep, after that comment, Cruyff who used to send him New Year or Christmas card every year, refused to do it any longer!!! I assume a combination of "too much respect for Beckenbauer" and being a "team player" as Cruyff always was, made him to play that way. But a brilliant player such as Cruyff should never have doubted his ability to dribble any player; he had great acceleration and since he had the ball, he had the upper hand to decide what to do. If I was him, I would have welcomed the opportunity to challenge such a great player like Beckenbauer and take my chance to pass by him and likely to score a goal in a World Cup final.

      @@13muller9The Kaiser was too clever and had too great a positional sense to have put under pressure especially by cloggers like Hunter and Storey. Don Revie asked Kevin Keegan push up on him in the friendly at Wembley in 1975 but in his autobiography Keegan said he couldn't get near him - Beckenbauer had an almost sixth sense to step out of the way with the ball.
      The reason Bayern lost that match against Ajax was because Sepp Maier had a bad game and the reason Cruyff passed to Rep in the World Cup final was because Beckenbauer didn't dive in on him but ran back in line with Cruyff, jockeying him and preventing him from getting in a clear shot, so Cruyff did the correct thing and passed to the unmarked man but Rep didn't have the skill to score.

    • @gunternetzer9621
      @gunternetzer9621 Рік тому +1

      You don't appreciate great players. Beckenbauer was not allegedly but definitely a truly great player always storming up with real class (when a midfielder in 1966) and even at sweeper when it was 'on' (watch the 1972 European Championship final) and one of the few modern players who could bear comparison with the greats of the 50's. He was too good and had too great a positional sense to be upset by cloggers like Hunter and Storey pressurising him, which is why they couldn't.

    • @13muller9
      @13muller9 Рік тому

      @@gunternetzer9621 All your points are valid, but I have a slightly different opinion: You might be right that Maier had a bad game, but I don't remember him committing any blunder; two great headers by Haan and Cruyff could have beaten any keeper. Overall, Ajax of 1971-73 was one head and shoulder above any other team. I remember in a friendly before that 4-0 game (probably a pre season game), Ajax beat Bayern 5-2 or 5-3, and If you watch the 2-nd leg, you will notice in absence of Cruyff due to injury, Bayern barely wins 2-1. As for the pass to Rep, yes Beckenbauer didn't dive in, but so did Berti Voghts in the 1-st minute of the game and yet Cruyff easily passed by him until he was brought down by Hoiness inside the penalty box. The reason Beckenbauer didn't dive in (if he ever had intention of doing so), was because when Cruyff got the ball, Beckenbauer was the only German player between Cruyff and Maier; so it was defending 101 and he had no other choice. Any clever defender in that level would certainly have done the same thing. But Cruyff having the ball on his feet had the upper hand, Arjen Robben is a faster player than Cruff, but on many occasions in similar situations he created just a little space enough to score without dribbling and passing by any defender. The one that comes to my mind is Robben scoring against England in a friendly when Holland was wearing all black kit. Rep being a poor finisher to some degree and missing so many chances, but on this occasion, credit goes to Maier who by reading the game, rushed forward, closed the angle and made it harder for Rep to score; similar to what Ubaldo Fillol the Argentine keeper did against Rensenbrink in1978 final, but at least Rensenbrink hit the post!! Any way, thanks for your civilized and educated response.
