Although too young this tournament, thankfully you can see clips on UA-cam, 1982 tournament in Spain was excellent. Like Holland in 1974 the best team didn't win. That had drama of penalty shoot out, Battiston flattened by Schumacher and some upsets along the way.
Totally agree. And to think, the three most skilled European players at the time: Eusébio, Best, Cruyff, were absent, speaks volumes for that 1970 world cup tournament. Any other world cup tournament's, with that type of brilliant players missing, would have lowered the tournament quality significantly.
Peter Bonetti was the reason we lost, should’ve saved beckenbauers shot and done better with gerd muller effort. But what changed the game was taking Bobby Charlton off. England wouldn’t have won the cup anyway. Brazil were unbeatable.
@@mikephillips950 Italy actually matched Brazil in the final until Gerson's goal in the 65th minute. They tired badly because of extra-time against the Germans but the Brazilians were in a different class in 1970.
You are very lucky to have watched all this classic games, classic players, classic times and the most wonderful World Cup ever! That was such a thrilling match. I can't imagine your face when England were 2 goals ahead, when West Germany tied the game and when West Germany scored the 3rd goals!

@@hamala7437 I'm from DR Congo, and started to watch this Manchaft since the 1974 World Cup, I was less then 15 years old, and I can approve this you that this team is mentally invincible in cup matches till the final whistle. They often come from behind, no matter the score's margin, and win.
the best world cup ever.. epic comeback from Germany after having loses from England on 1966. The moment of fans celebrate with the players on Gerd Muller goal on this match is my favorite part, so memorable..so many legendary moments, legendary players, legendary matches.. Italy vs Germany was the Match of the Century. Pele, Carlos Alberto Torres,Rivellino, Jerzhinho, etc and their coach Mario Zagallo was one of the best Brazillian squad ever.
@Felix Carpio . Sure, but give them 1970's running shoes, have them running in 1970's playing fields , kicking a heavier and harder 1970's football...etc.
Decided to watch this with my dad so he could look back on his football memories and it truly breaks my heart to watch England play their hardest in this
It's good that the goal of Uwe Seeler was recorded on film. You could explain how he scored to a million people and none of them would believe how he did it. Luckily we have prove he really scored like that. A great goal! Also do you see how the ball bounces on the field when they pass? You had to be a technical player to still controll the ball like these two teams did.
what a beautiful commentar from you,and yes ,both teams did a great match, but we have uwe,it is a mess, that the greatest forward of all times never reached the world cup, best wishes to you from germany, thanks for youre fair words
+Mr.Shade Cardiff City fans were probably not surprised. They remember his goal against their side in the second leg Cup Winners' Cup semi-final in 1968. Like this one, a goal of great technique, out of the blue.
Leeds legend john giles who played with Bobby at man united and against him for Leeds reckoned Bobby was the best player .ever . When he first arrived at mancheter united and saw the busy babes , he says it was Bobby who he was most in awe of . Giles played with Bobby and he said you would wait for Bobby to give you the ball but he wouldn't give it to you . He said Bobby didn't need to , he was so quick and such a great dribbler he could run through a whole defence and smash it on to the net with either foot . Bobby is the most underrated footballer in history , very few people realise how great he actually was . Beckenbauer sure knew after he played against him in both world cups.
Great match, and a nice outcome for the German side, considering the WC final four years back. But aside from any patriotic notions, matches between England and Germany were never ever boring ones, and that requires two (!) great sides. Watching Uwe Seeler or Gerd Mueller warms your heart. They don't make 'em like that anymore...
@@mikoajdariuszmackowiak2141 Actually he was: Both Best and Muller played in the same team in North America Soccer League along with Teofilu Cubilas from Peru in about 1978-79 season. Their picture together should be found on internet. But when Ralph Tempel says: " he must know best"; what he means is that Muller must know better than anybody else, unless you meant sarcasm!
Müller's goal was not Bonetti's fault. Müller was a master at positioning himself and anticipating where the ball would go. Notice how that central defender marking him was mislead. It looks easy for Müller just as it happens with gifted players. I wonder if this frequent blame on Bonetti for that goal was originated in England missing Banks (yes, he may have allowed less goals, but then one could put the blame on the keeper after every English loss without Banks) and Müller not yet demonstrating internationally how great he was.
Keith Newton one of the forgotten great attacking fullbacks, ran 70 yards at top speed and delivered a perfect first time cross for the second goal. RIP
16 years later I was in that stadium for the '86 World Cup. It is oppressively hot in June, especially for the English. I thought England could have received a penalty shot or two.
You know it’s mad cos I was born a year after the 1986 World Cup but in some ways I wish I was either around To watch either one of these tournaments, you’re a lucky man to have had this experience 🙏
England did not play in Leon, México in the 1986 WC. England played three games in Monterrey City in the group-series, and in the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City the other two games. In 1986 the Stadium of Leon was not used.
The first World Cup that I remember, as a 7 year old, and still my favourite! We had just got a colour TV especially for it and it all seemed absolutely amazing!
Ruhe in Frieden, Uns Uwe. Even I, who is not a real football fan, upon hearing of his passing, immediately thought "back of the head", and I had only ever seen stills, so it is great to see it captured on film and here for all to see. I was born shortly after the 1970 finals, so my memories of World Cups only really start with 1978, but to think that this legend still played alongside some of the great names of my time, but had also played in the 66 final (as skipper) and even in 58, when Pelé's era began... What a life! You do not need to win everything to be one of the greatest, and him, with his 5 ft. 6.5, did not even need to be tall. Will, power, athleticism, great skill, graceful off the field, humble even. They broke that mould.
My contention is that we have never recovered from that match. Hurst had a perfectly good equaliser which was mysteriously given as offside. The Germans have always had the whip hand over us ever since.
Yes and guess what nationality the Ref was? Yep of course Argentinian! There was a clear penalty not sure who the England player was,but absolute stonewalled! Also the West Germans had been playing on that pitch as their home pitch, for 2 games I believe,so had experience and also 2 thirds of the crowd were German! But the decision to save Bobby Charlton for the Semi-Final was disastrous! Alf Ramsey never did know how to use the lone substitute! Best England squad ever!
British Clubs Started to dominate Europe through the 70's and 80's in all fairness. England were always a massive disappointment in tournaments, and it never made a lot of sense. Carries on to this day.
I remember watching it live. The conditions in Mexico that summer were brutal, high humidity and heat... The Europeans had tough time adjusting. Still a great WC, many classic matches including this one and of course Italy vs Germany and the final...
As a kid, I watched it on L.A.‘s UHF Spanish channel, KMEX TV, while my father and his mates were in Leon. It was played early afternoon for European TV, 95 degrees F (37 C), and humid as fk. He said a few of his anglo German mates didn’t wear hats or sombreros, and got heatstroke. Some of them were in Wembley in ‘66, so the celebratory cervezas in the hotel pools sorted that out pretty quick
West Germanys comeback in this match was the best seen in a World Cup from 0 - 2 down on 49 mins to 3 - 2 AET. All 3 goals were sublime especially Uwe Seelers header just pure genius! West Germany showed in that game if you put your mind to it you can accomplish anything! What an inspirational team that was and to think it was on the eve of them becoming the first team to become holders of both the World Cup and euro championships. A feat not to be repeated until the year 2000! RIP Gerd Muller and Uwe Seeler
I would say the 1954 World Cup final between West Germany and Hungary was the greatest comeback. The Germans were 0-2 down, but that Magyar team had not lost a match in years. And had players such as Puskas and Kocsis that were legendary.
@@kingwilson06ad yes and no. The result-wise probably. But the 1970 game was the game of equals while in 1954 Hungary should have won again 8:3 like they did in preliminaries. I watched that game 5 times and Magyars had 10 clear chances to score. For some reasons they didn't God only knows why
I was 14yrs old and watched the match at boarding school in Scotland! Worst day of my life haha - with England losing to Scotland at Wembley in '67 a close 2nd. Yes, the Scots delighted at Germany's comeback though did admit to Bobby Moore's outstanding performance that day, and against Brazil, esp the tackle against Jairzinho. I never thought much of Bobby Moore till the '70 WC but I realised his ability to read the game at the back and intercept the pass was phenomenal. A shame Francis Lee did not live up to the promise he had shown in 1969. What a great pair of fullbacks we had. Great players and favourites on both sides made for a memorable game
@@neillp3827 its difficult to disagree with you Neill. My national team have been an embarrassment for years. They went down hill from 1970 onwards. With our depth of talent we should be competing to win every major competition but we just arent good enough. England have been badly coached and organised and never until very recently invested in their youth teams like the other countries have done . The new younger crop do seem very skilled and exciting. This was the first World Cup game I watched, I remember it so well still. Two great teams and a very hard game. I think Germany coped with the heat and altitude slightly better. England could have gotten one penalty. Germany could have gotten 2 penalties against Italy in the semifinal. 1970 World Cup might be the best I ever watched.
Yep, I'm another one who cried at 9 years old, because England lost! 😭 (Remember, they were always winning in war movies!) Any World Cup been better than Mexico 70? Football stickers and Esso coins from the garage. The song 'Back Home'. Bobby Moore and the 'watch pre-tournament in Bogota, Colombia! Special shirts they wore to help keep them cool. Remember asking my dad, 'Why?' Now, watching it, I can't believe the chances both teams had. Great game. In England's defence, it was played in Leon at altitude where Germany had been based for their group games. England were second to Brazil in their group at lower altitude in Guadalajara. Well done to Germany. They played in another classic in the semi-final v Italy.
I was the same age as you when I watched it with my twin brother and my dad on a little portable black and white tv with an indoor ariel because mum was watching something boring on the main tv (also black and white). I remember it all so very clearly.
Nev and Craig Gerrard I am sorry that it wasn't a better evening for the two of you back then. At 5 years you were too young to celebrate the '66 victory. Best wishes to you - that you will have the chance to watch a world cup victory of the English team. I'd be fine with a final ENG - GER and England wins.
I'm here after watching Episode Three of 'Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads?' on UA-cam last night, that episode originally having been broadcast half-a-century beforehand (23rd January 1973). This match and the date on which it took place was referenced by Terry Collier (James Bolam) during the episode in question, so the writers, Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, got the date correct, which would have been a relief for them! It's funny that Episode One (9th January 1973) saw a reference to Ilie Nastase, so I'll perhaps have to look out for any more 'name-dropping' of foreign sports' personalities after Gerd Müller was mentioned by name!
I watched this match and remember Charlton being substituted after the second goal to "save" him for the semifinal. He was marking Beckenbauer and always dominated midfield.
Absolutely. There´s another one at 1:13 on Franny Lee. England were denied progression to the semi-final because of a poor referee. West Germany were very lucky to have won this. Had Lee´s penalty been given, the game might have been wrapped up in the first half. This match was arguably the start of the decline and fall of England as an international force. The tantalising thought remains that had they gotten to the final, the future of English football might have been so different. I say that as an Irish man.
That was a clear trip by Beckenbauer on Clarke in 1975. Imo the ref didn't give it because the Kaiser was regarded as a 'gentlemanly' player and such a player couldn't possibly ever resort to needing to foul an opponent.
@@juansilveira465: Italia llegaba sin despeinarse contra México a la semifinal mientras Alemania llegaba desgastada luego de este partido contra Inglaterra. England, even better than the '66 team, cruising at two-nil up. Bobby Charlton arguably the best player on the pitch gets substituted and he wasn't even injured. Peter Bonetti was never picked for England again.
Yes Derek remember it well , Ramsey wanted to rest Charlton but all it did was release Beckenbaur and put England on the back foot, Bonnetti replacing a food poisoned Banks was poor to say the least especially with the first German goal
Maybe yes, a tatics misjudgement taking off Charlton, he could easily run the whole game and changing marking the Kaiser with a rested substitute, Bell, to this duty, or alternate marking on the german # 4,freeing Charlton closer to the box since he had chances to shoot far distance. Heat was the same torture for both teams. Somehow, the english tireness unexpctedly collapsed while Schoen made the right changes mostly at right wing. That english squad, against Brazil, showed a effective and different play, from that 66' boring air attack. And to end rant, even the likes of Rivelino, Tostao said England deserved to win Brazil to be fair on that game of luck to one side. Strangely, Hurst did few on both games and the dethroning the previous champion curse followed as well
@@LeownskieR I believe Pele said to Bobby Moore during that iconic, shirt-swapping moment, 'I'll see you in the Final'. Remember Brazil just about beat England; Jeff Astle missed a sitter; Alan Ball hit the bar and Brazil went on to destroy Italy. England and Brazil were by far the two best teams in 1970.
@@traciedavidbate5350 And the other two goals. Bonetti was in no man's land for the back-header and he should have come out and grabbed or punched for the third goal.
@@derekmullings1507 Yes Derek should have -played Brazil in the final which would imo have been one of the great Finals after the earlier game were England very unlucky especially with Astle missing that sitter and remembered by that fantastic save from Pele by the greatest keeper ever Gordon Banks whose absence from the Germany game cost us dearly. Perhaps Bell man marking Beckenbaur saves the game , but hey that's football.
The veteran Uwe Seele was already 35 when he played his fourth and last World Cup in Mexico in 1970.I wonder how he managed to score that goal with his back head?No matter what it levelled the score at 2-2 and brought the match to extra time.
As a Chelsea fan it grieves me to say that Peter Bonetti was at fault for all 3 goals. Obviously the first, but with the second he came when he should have stayed back and for the third he stayed on his line when he should have come. Against that Bobby Moore and the defence were at fault for not pushing up for offside on Seller's goal and ball watching for the third. We now know that Peter wasn't in the best mental frame of mind for this game but played very well up until the Kaiser's goal. He also made a great save from a 1 on 1 with Gerd Muller when the score was 2-1 and not many keepers did that.
Bonetti was a good keeper but there were better ones in England at less fashionable clubs. A young Peter Shilton had been Banks' understudy at Leicester and was in the initial squad but left out for the trip and Jim Montgomery at Sunderland was also superb especially at reaction saves. Remember Monty's double save in the FA cup final in 1973? I think either of them would have performed more reliably and saved at least one of the ones that beat Bonetti.
There are those who still blame Peter Bonneti for West Germany's goals. The first one maybe, but not the other two. Just look at the replays and you will see that Englands defence was all over the place. Why Peter Osgood (that seasons top league scorer) never played in any of Englands' games is beyond baffling. Ramsey never liked any real 'flare' players. He even put Geoff Astle on against Brazil, who promptly missed an open goal. It was Ramsey that lost us the world cup.
Two years earlier Seeler scored a similar goal, out of nowhere - this time with his foot - for Hamburg against Cardiff City in the Cup Winners' Cup semi-final so he had form.
It was one of those headers where you just knock it in the danger area and hope . Great foresight Seeler was a fine player but it was fortunate . I believe Gordon Banks was the reason for why we lost , coupled with bad decisions by ramsay , the ref and bonetti .
Seeler knew what he was doing. It wasn't luck or a fluke. It was a clever header by a world-class player. You can go on about Banks and Ramsey but England lost because they were knackered, especially the full backs.
During that World Cup, Helmut Schoen regularly brought 2 very tricky, fast wingers (Grabowski and Libuda) into games at about the 75 min mark. The heat was so intense in Mexico that those 2 would run already exhausted full backs ragged. That tactic was just as important to this game's outcome as Ramsey taking off Charlton. The idea was to save him for the next game - and at 2-0 England were totally in command. West Germany were being completely outplayed. I really don't think anyone at that point expected anything other than an England win.
As a German I must say this game has a special place in our Football History as a legendary win, but considered objectively the outcome was rather lucky. England were the better team and missed some great opportunities. And there was at least one clear penalty for England. All in all this game was a fine example for what we call "Deutsche Tugenden". Fighting spirit till the final whistle and never giving up.
The German right winger Grabowski definitely swung things their way , but people tend to forget that Bobby Charlton was substituted AFTER Beckenbaur's goal. Moreover , it seemed a logical change at the time as Colin Bell was the form box-to-box midfielder at the time and contributed fully as i recall. Bonnetti gets a lot of stick for this performance but , again , didn't Banks let a very similar shot squirm under him in the 66 final ? Ultimately two great teams slugging it out - shame one had to lose.
@@nicholasflay8819 Bonetti was caught coming forward when he should have stayed back for the second, and stayed back when he should have come for the third.

He did have a habit that irritated me. In both 1970 and 1974 he kept calling Gerd Mueller 'Gerdi.' I don't know why. He was never referred to as Gerdi in Germany.
@@alfonsoalfonso3576 Thank you alfonso I agree. Peter Bonetti obviously a good goalie but the Beckenbauer goal should not have been scored, went under the keeper. And really the second one, backheader by Seeler, saw Bonetti out of position way off his line. And sadly the last one he is stuck on his line.
Some people are talking about Englands defensive collapse, but in my opinion that was down to Ramsey. He played Newton and Cooper as wing backs rather than the full backs they were, which meant in tortuous heat they had the responsibility for both the wide defensive and wide attacking play. They were absolutely done by extra time.
I was only ten when I watched this. In those days nobody came back from being 2-0 down. I was tactically nieve but I remember the brilliant Franz Beckenbauer continually attacking once Charlton was taken off. Fantastic player. This defeat scared me for life!
Probably England's best ever squad, but watch the whole game. Despite the 2-0 lead, England were never as in control as the highlights suggest. By 1970 West Germany were the better side & I think they would have won even if Gordon Banks was in goal.
I think vordman hits the nail on the head, but would go slightly further and say that this was UNarguably the last time England were a major force. Personally I think the 1970 team was better than that of '66. But so much went wrong for them in Mexico. Conspiracy? Quite possibly, yes - particularly with Bobby Moore and the bracelet incident. Banks getting the 'runs'? He wasn't the only one - Charlton and Ball had similar ailments earlier in the campaign and recovered within 48hrs (as did Banksy). But the arrangements made beforehand weren't too clever... apparently it was Ramsey who vetoed the local food, and it was stuff like this which cast England as the villains of the piece. City centre hotel in busy, noisey Guadalajara? Bad move. The substitutions against West Germany? Beckenbaur admitted years later that this what changed the match. Peter Bonetti? Yes, bad game and he admitted as much himself. All in all, I personally think England were good enough to reach the final. But by then, Brazil, probably the best international side ever, were on fire, and I don't think England could have lived with them. Sadly, especially after the latest embarrassing WC campaign, I think it will be a very long time yet before England are serious challengers again.
Stuart S the 70 team was better than 66, no question...the football against Brazil is arguably the best ever produced by an England side...yet we forget they were heavily criticised for most of their performances in Mexico (notably the game against Czechoslovakia) and Ramsey's approach - never questioned post-66 - was put under scrutiny...they were pretty dull in their group games aside from Brazil and their collapse against West Germany is the stuff of nightmares
We were all over them playing great football until..... Watched it live and it nearly broke my heart. That team was so good. Still hurts because we were so in control. V surprised that Ramsey got it wrong.
It was a great game. Early swagger from England, confident and expansive football. Then the slightly fortuitous bb goal and the resurgence of Germany. England lost cohesion and then the match. Ramsey hadn't absorbed the importance of substitutions. So sad as it was a very good England side that was just beginning to play to its potential.
To be fair, England's second goal was just as lucky as Beckenbauer's...Maier should have saved it comfortably. Ramsey's changes had logic. Germany were starting to overrun England even with Charlton on the pitch. Charlton was on the field when Beckenbauer scored. Wasn't it Charlton's job to track Beckenbauer and vice versa? Bell did very well when he came on. Hunter came on to bolster a defence that was wilting badly. I just think Ramsey's hard-running 4-4-2 system took too much out of his players in the heat and thin air of Mexico.
Im a huge fan of the german national team, but i have to admit that they were lucky in this game. England have a extraordinary team. They deserve more luck in the match against Brasil and in the tournament in general. The best european team for sure.
Lucky to come back from 2-0 to 3-2 ? No dear, typical German attitude: cohesion and combativeness. They believe in themselves and always fight until the very last second of the game. They are extremely hard mentally, nothing to compare to England which is very weak mentally and cannot win anything important since many decades.
I agree, England were a very good team in 1970 and the final should have been Brazil v England who i think were the only team capable of beating Brazil in that tournament!! We didn't have any luck at all in that WC plus our finishing was pretty poor! The amount of chanced created v chances taken was very average indeed!! The South Americans hated England as well including the Argentinian referee who i suspect wanted revenge for WC66 v Argentina!
@@butzee You were too dependent on Bobby Charlton . It seems like he must of been like your Gazza back then . But Bobby was only one player ,. Brazil had a team full of stars. No way are you beating them .

I was just 13 years old and still remember it clearly and how upset I felt at the final result . Many things went against England that day , but notwithstanding those things England would of won but for that substitution . Who knows if we would of beaten Italy in the semi , but if we had it may of even been a more amazing final against Brazil than the one they had against Italy . That's what disappoints me most even now all these years later. England's finest side ever against probably the best ever international team . We had foretaste of it luckily two weeks earlier in on of Englands best ever performances against a Brazil side without their midfield playmaker Gerson . He was back for the final and Brazil had become an unstoppable force . But it's intriguing to think of what might of been . For me Mexico 70 was a golden epoch . Footballs zenith for me was then .

Brilliant, historical match. Clear penalty on Bell. However, the Germans managed to turn the score from 0:2 to 3:2 and this could only be done by the big teams.
England should have let Clough manage England as, outside of the great Anfield managers of the era,, who were not arsed about such accolades, he would have been the best availbale. Unfortunatley, Clough would have picked his own side, and not yielded to media pressure to play inferior players based on their popularity in the media. He'd have stood a chance of winning, as he did with Forrest. It was never to be, and England lost out because of it. They needed a YES man at the helm.
I used to think like that , not anymore .Clough was good but he wasnt that good . Look what he did at Leeds . He wasnt a Revie , revie won more than Clough . He was his own worst enemy.
Alf Ramsey was not a yes man - in 1966 he chose Hunt & Hurst over Greaves & unfashionable players like Jack Charlton. Don't mention Clough without Peter Taylor - the pair of them may have been a success at England, but Clough on his own would have been an even bigger disaster than he was at Leeds.
I'm Irish, but I have to say that England where very unlucky in this match. Come to think of it, they have been very unlucky in a lot of world cup matches.

@@richardwallace5226 good point but if you are old enough English football is still in the dark ages as regards to tactics/managers not quality of players. Hugh Johns - great commentator. And two brilliant assists from Keith Newton then Bonetti fell to pieces. How was that not a penalty on Colin Bell? I still have no idea why the Mexicans were so pro-German on the day.
The Mexicans were pro-German first because there was a Volkswagen factory in the outskirts of Mexico City, and second because all Latin Americans were against England due to the facts of '66 ("Animals"): in Bogotà, Colombia, where the English team went in approach of the 1970 World Cup, Bobby Moore was charged with theft in a shop
I hope you aren't offended by my commentary, but Germans liked to mix with Mexicans, even liked our food, while U.K.'s team even brought their own cooks. That, I think says it all.
Germans being Germans playing football. I was always against them, never liked their rude and simple gameplay style. But without them and their phenomenal stubbornness- we would never have so many historic dramas which constitute the best parts of football history. This game was one of those dramas, as well as 1966 WC final, semifinal 1970 against Italy, semifinal against France 1982, the final game of WC 1986…
Great game and England may have lost but they were a great team. Had read the Bonetti obit and it described his responsibility for the first two goals. Harsh IMO. Only the first was his fault. The header from Seeler was just an unbelievable piece of play. He tried to head it where it went so it was no fluke. I don't think I ever saw a clearer penalty than the one not given for the foul on Bell ( and I'm Scottish so there's no way I am favouring England ). I was too young to remember this ( 5 yo ) but I have never seen an England team come out and do the business like they did under Ramsey. Even under Robson I always thought they were a little bit lucky and were feared by teams who could have beaten them because of the stature of England in having invented the game and once been half decent.
Isn't it amazing that the english players didn't complain to the referee after Beckenbauer's challenge on Bell? Today mayhem would break out and there would be bitching and whining for five minutes until play could resume.
I can remember this game as if it was yesterday. This England team was better than the '66 team . However, the list of things that cost them this game comes down to one thing. They folded. Leading 2-0, all they had to do was park the bus, and when in possession, make the Germans chase it. The heat would have drained them. The ref was very poor, Brian Labone was a disaster, and the amount of chances england missed was criminal, but it had nothing to do with Gordon Banks, because Peter Bonetti was a great goalkeeper, and proved that every week playing for Chelsea. Nothing to do with Bobby Charlton being taken off. It came down to folding when the going got tough. At the end of normal time it should have been 5-2 to England, Instead they packed their bags and went home
Bonetti took a lot of flak (mainly from from non-footballers) for this. But our forwards missed some good chances and our defence was poor, especially in WGermany’s second goal. People were just upset that Banks was out.

England were robbed of two of the clearest penalties I’ve ever seen. One on Francis Lee in the first half, and one on Colin Bell towards the end of extra time. Ever since that disputed goal by Hurst in 1966, Germany have enjoyed immeasurable luck in tournaments against England

Bonnetti only at fault for the first goal. I think. Seeler header was impossible to predict and poor marking by the defenders gave Muller the space to collect the spare ball for the third goal. Bonnetti got a lot of unfair criticism for this match. England lost the game through poor game management, not defending a two goal lead. Ramsey taking off Charlton released Beckenbauer to becoming less a man marking Centre Back to an attacking central midfielder who then set the pace of the game in midfield and kept possession when England had previously dominated the middle of the pitch. Helmut Schon made an inspired substitution with Grabowski who troubled England down the right wing all the rest of the game and set up the winning goal. Germany deserve a lot of credit for showing grit, character and adaptability to get back into the game.
He was at fault for all three. Dived over the first, came when he should have stayed and staying when he should of challenged Mueller. Agree about Charlton going off and Grabowski killed Cooper.....

He had a mare..! (the first shot was so savable..!
There was very little he could have done about that second goal. That was one in a million

Yes as an English man, probably the best header ever.
RIP Uwe Seeler. What a great player!
What a superb goal by Uwe Seeler
During that World Cup, Helmut Schoen regularly brought 2 very tricky, fast wingers (Grabowski and Libuda) into games at about the 75 min mark. The heat was so intense in Mexico that those 2 would run already exhausted full backs ragged. That tactic was just as important to this game's outcome as Ramsey taking off Charlton. The idea was to save him for the next game - and at 2-0 England were totally in command. West Germany were being completely outplayed. I really don't think anyone at that point expected anything other than an England win.
Spot on. The Germans hadn't created one decent chance until Bonetti's error.🙈

He played Newton and Cooper as wing backs rather than the full backs they were, which meant in tortuous heat they had the responsibility for both the wide defensive and wide attacking play. They were absolutely done by extra time.
Uno de los partidos inolvidables en la historia de los mundiales y fue en León.
I was only ten when I watched this. In those days nobody came back from being 2-0 down. I was tactically nieve but I remember the brilliant Franz Beckenbauer continually attacking once Charlton was taken off. Fantastic player. This defeat scared me for life!
The reverberations from this match still echo down through the ages. It was arguably the last time England were a major force on the world stage.
Stuart S the 70 team was better than 66, no question...the football against Brazil is arguably the best ever produced by an England side...yet we forget they were heavily criticised for most of their performances in Mexico (notably the game against Czechoslovakia) and Ramsey's approach - never questioned post-66 - was put under scrutiny...they were pretty dull in their group games aside from Brazil and their collapse against West Germany is the stuff of nightmares
vordman how about the 1990 squad?
1982 were unbeaten
We were all over them playing great football until..... Watched it live and it nearly broke my heart. That team was so good. Still hurts because we were so in control. V surprised that Ramsey got it wrong.
West Germany were masters in coming back from behind in WC games. Look at the France semi in 82. 3-1 down in extra time and still won the match.
Second goalscorer Martin Peters just passed away. RIP.
so did Colin Bell yesterday..
Bobby Charlton's shooting was terrible.
Bonetti doing his best Alan Rough impression
It was a great game. Early swagger from England, confident and expansive football. Then the slightly fortuitous bb goal and the resurgence of Germany. England lost cohesion and then the match. Ramsey hadn't absorbed the importance of substitutions. So sad as it was a very good England side that was just beginning to play to its potential.
Paul Reynolds Ramsey should never take Bobby Charlton off
alex kanyima Bringing in Norman Hunter was not exactly enterprising.

One of the ten most dramatic and famous games of all time in World Cups.
The english can be proud of playing a major role in a World Cup in color TV.
Charlton said later he felt really great during that game. Beckenbauer said later he couldn't get a grip on the game in midfield until Charlton was taken off with 20 minutes left .
It was the best world cup event of all time
+alex kanyima Thanks , To me and I'm sure to many others it was too . That magic has gone now . I think 78 and 82 had it , but nothing could ever compare to 70 .

Brilliant,historical match.
Clear penalty on Bell. However, the Germans managed to turn the score from 0:2 to 3:2 and this could only be done by the big teams.
Peter Bometti with a horror show helped the Germans , quite a bit if I don’t say so myself .
Only in the first goal you can blame the keeper. The other two was a total disorganized defense.@@seduxtive776
Anthony McGann the English establishment is still doing the same today. Leadership has always been an issue since the empire broke up after WW2.

Bobby Moore holds back from challenging Gerd Muller for the winning goal. I never saw Moore head a ball, and he held back from contesting this looping ball into the six-yard box. With the world championship on the line, why did he stand back for Muller?
Just maybe like 66 the match was fixed from the Higher-Ups,

As does 1972

@@richardwallace5226 good point but if you are old enough English football is still in the dark ages as regards to tactics/managers not quality of players. To win one needs a lot of luck like Greece or have possession of the ball with key players. We have had decent players over the years but incompetent managers Taylor, Keegan, Hodgson or lucky ones like Robson or too safe like Greenwood or in it for the money like Capello or Erickson. Only decent ones were Venables and Hoddle but they had external issues. Imo every England fan and current player should watch the whole match to learn where it all went wrong and work forward.

Trying to find footage of the Hurst 'goal' that was given as offside, was it when England were trailing 3-2? Anyone?
Hugh Johns - great commentator.
And two brilliant assists from Keith Newton then Bonetti fell to pieces.
How was that not a penalty on Colin Bell?
I still have no idea why the Mexicans were so pro-German on the day.
Stonewall pen on Colin Bell.
Most blatant penalty on Colin Bell ever !! Shocking decision !!
Bringing their own english food and water sounded as a insult to the mexican supporters
#RIP Uwe Seeler😢
Under Ramsey, they had a system (4:3:3) and every player was chosen to fit the system and knew their role in the system.
Why didnt Banks play that game ? If he plays , england probably goes through
@@rrrrr767 Food poisoning
I think it's harsh how bonetti was blamed, sure he should have stopped the first but where was the defenders for the other two
The most devastated I've ever been watching an Eng match. Eng played superb football for 80% of the match but,
Isn't it amazing that the english players didn't complain to the referee after Beckenbauer's challenge on Bell? Today mayhem would break out and there would be bitching and whining for five minutes until play could resume.
Yes agreed. And in the first half K-H Schnellinger's challenge on Francis Lee. Both are stonewall penalties
Its a clear penalty all day long..
Guess the oxigen run out of their lungs...
Classic game. Boby Charlton last international game.
Bonetti took a lot of flak (mainly from from non-footballers) for this. But our forwards missed some good chances and our defence was poor, especially in WGermany’s second goal. People were just upset that Banks was out.
It was said that the England side of 70 was better than the one in 66..
England were robbed of two of the clearest penalties I’ve ever seen. One on Francis Lee in the first half, and one on Colin Bell towards the end of extra time. Ever since that disputed goal by Hurst in 1966, Germany have enjoyed immeasurable luck in tournaments against England
Well Karma strikes back my friend . England deserved those 2 penalties but i think they payed up for what they got in 1966 tournament

The situation short before the final whistle is a clear penalty for England, or am I wrong?
Glaringly at fault for Seeler's goal. He stood still and just watched it go in.
He was at fault for all three. Dived over the first, came when he should have stayed and staying when he should of challenged Mueller. Agree about Charlton going off and Grabowski killed Cooper.....
Yep. totally agree.
