AQ Khan was probably one of the top Pakistani citizens of greatest importance to the nation. Nuclear weapons act as an equalising force when dealing with other nations, also for the Muslim world it was of great importance that one fully Muslim nation can achieve such and advanced system of intercontinental ballistic missiles.

If not for him, Israel would be the only nuclear weapons power in the Middle East, which would be horrifying. At least now, Israel is contained by Iran. Dr. A Q Khan is not only a national hero in Pakistan but across the Muslim world for refusing arbitrary restrictions which allowed only Western countries access to nuclear weapons. If Iraq, Syria and Libya had nuclear weapons, they wouldn't have been invaded by the West, and that's precisely what Dr. Khan was trying to prevent.
