    You need about 2 ft of 3/32" ID vacuum line and about 6" of 1/4" ID vacuum line (or whatever line the 3/32" line fits inside of perfectly).
    You should also purchase and install a 12mm non return check valve for your oil return line here: amzn.to/2emCgHz

      When you apply full vacuum to that port dont you risk sucking the engine oil up the oil return line? How dirty was your intake manifold?

    Also, it appears that a substantial vacuum reduces oil consumption. It also appears that factory settings and equipment don't maintain that high of a vacuum. I particularly enjoy the way u examine the data and allow it to guide your conclusions.

      You mesn more vaacum there are less oil consumtion there is?
      Factories want to sell cars, so they are made theresfter. Like oil fume go to airintake unfiltered and carbonizes the intake and valves, pollutes the engine, my opinion there can hust aswell be open crank case solution. Cleaner sir for the engine. The fune still gets out in the atmosphere anyway, then the fume vould be lead directly to exhaust instead. So we dont get it in climate intakes or smelling it through the doors/windows. Worse air, more gas/mileage😊 if they made cars quality on parts similar to trucks we could had the cars for 18 years and maybe just haveing an oil leak repair besides services😊

      In the video he shows that this mod creates more vacuum, and even more on open throttle. Can't this damage the top lid gasket or valve body gasket after a while, i mean bmw engineers designed a certain vacuum for a reason, I'm worried some components might take damage over time. I wanna thank you for this excellent video. My 2002 325i which was consuming 1.5 litre of oil every 1000 km and throwing up the low oil level light after a 1000km high RPM journey. I followed your instructions to the letter to install the O2 Pilot mod, except I used the smaller vacuum port since it is unused and thereby not requiring a step up adapter for the hose. have now travelled 500 km after doing the mod and I have not had to top up the oil at all. Thank you 50sKid for your time and effort on your chanel.
    10 years ago i bought a 2003 330ci convertible. In the North of Sweden. Its my summer car. Anyhow! Yesterday i did my 02pilot mod. The only thing i remowed was the airfilter housing and the upper big intake hose. The rear plug was broken so i took it with my fingers. The smaller hose was easy to conect with a plier. The rear tube was tricky, i took a drill and made the hole more like a funnel at the end. Once i got it started i could take a long stone aged plier to get it in all the way. The only problem i had was some big brownish flying things that takes a bite like a chicken nugget. It was +30 C and sunshine, and i had to work fully dressed. When i had the 2 tubes connected i put everything back and started the engine, and the vacuum was in the rear tube, so the arrow on the valve is pointing to the back of the engine.
    I have the Torque app and obd sender, so i can see all sensors, but not erase fault codes. The vacuum meter is the same now as before 02pilot mod. The funny thing is that i get BOOST at full trottle on first and second gear, before and after the mod.
    I had to fill up a + pint every 2 tanks. Now i have 2 trips to the gas station and i will hit 200 000 km.. 124 274 miles.
    The CCV is never changed, but i dont have cracy vacuum when opening the filler cap.

After O2 pilot mode AND CCV replacement I am close to 350 street, still to check highway I'm guessing close to 600... As you can see I have a nasty case of too much oil consumption, I still need to do the Ac Delco solution piston soak, other than that I'm much happier without being concerned about oil every week! However I autocross my car and I ran into issues with the vacuum hose falling off CCV port, and had to add a zip tie or hose clamp to get it to stay on. I've read a few of these comments and I'd like to point out that the "02 Pilot Mod" likely would not fix your problem if you have noticeable smoke coming out of your tailpipe at this point. Your CCV would need to be fairly new or atleast not clogged what so ever for you to see promising results.

    Hey Jason. I really appreciate your videos. I am an e46 owner, but n46b20 engine (2.0L 4 Cylinders) and I can confirm that the CCV system is a nightmare. I am working on the removal of the system and instalation of a PCV system instead. I would like to comment that in the pcv system you will need a second port in the valve cover working as a breather. As I didn't want to manipulate the valve cover I did a small hole in the oil cap, and added a termination to connect a hose that connects to the air intake after the MAF and before the throttle body. I will finish the mod in a few days.
    Besides, I would like to mention that, in your video, you measured the vacuum produced by OEM CCV system and it is very rare you do not see vacuum, since I have checked personally on my father's e46 330i car to open the oil fill cap and it was difficult to open and then you hear the vacuum sucking, so I would say that your CCV system was not working properly??
    Thanks you a lot your your very interesting videos! Regards. Jose.

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  7 років тому

      Jose you should never need to put a hole in the oil cap. There's already a port in the valve cover where the original CCV system attaches to it so it can suck the blowby gases out. That's all you need for a PCV system. That is the "origin" where the gases come out. You then run a line from that to your intake manifold to recycle the blow by gases into the combustion chamber. And you want to put a PCV valve in the middle of that line so that 1) the flow is only one way and 2) the orifice size is reduced so that the strong suction from the intake manifold doesn't suck all the oil out of the valve cover. On your father's car, if his oil cap is difficult to remove, that means the diaphragm has failed inside the oil separator and all the CCV components need to be replaced.

    Thanks for the video, I also performed the 02Pilot mod to my E46 330i. One thing to note, in the video. I would NOT check for vacuum at the location shown in this video without the check valve installed. I bought a vacuum gauge to also test and ended up sucking some oil back into the CCV system and the intake manifold, causing the car to smoke pretty bad. I am fairly confident the smoke was mostly carbon due to the smell and color. I cleaned what I could without pulling the manifold, it seems most of the oil was in the air injection thing, held in with the o-rings on top of the manifold.

    I just did this on my 2002 525i w/ M54 engine and am eager to see the results. Jason said he used a 3/32" ID tube for the inner PCV vacuum port, but I found that size was too small. I ended up using the vacuum line BMW (PN: 11657803732) sells (I had some extra laying around) and it fit the port perfectly as well as fit snugly inside a 1/4" ID tube for the manifold vacuum port. I used some silicon spray to help the tubes join. I know you've literally heard it a 1000 times Jason, but you are great and you look great with the new lifestyle. Not so pale anymore! :) Many, many thanks!!

    • @50sKid

      Removing the diaphragm will suck way too much air flow and basically suck the oil up from the dipstick tube. Plus because the diaphragm isn't there, air will leak in around the cap on the oil separator.

    Hi Jason,
    Just wanted to say thanks for all of your videos and help, just purchased a 325Ci about a month ago and have SO many parts coming in to get her back in shape.
    That being said, I'm wondering if it's a good idea to attempt this mod instead of replacing the entire CCV (which seems a bit daunting). My car has exactly 130k, haven't driven it much at all since purchase, and by the looks of it, very little has been replaced. I've undertaken replacing all the gaskets and seals, as well as VANOS and DISA rebuild, but this (and the cooling system lol) is bothering me a bit. I live in Florida so weather and mayo probably won't be an issue!

    • @50sKid

      In colder climates the CCV tends to clog up with a yellow mayo like substance which is water from condensation mixed with oil. If this hasn't happened to you, then you are OK to install a new CCV and use this mod to solve the oil consumption problem.

    Hi, your videos are so helpful. I've had problems with the CCV system and thanks to your video was able to replace the system in place. I'm still suffering leaks which I'll get to the bottom of (I appreceiate it's impossible to diagnose without being there). That said...... I did a vacuum test. I thought I'd just check that the problem was vacuum rather than fuel pump ( the car - a 330ci - has done 136000 on it's original pump). When I disconnected the top hose from the crankcase and tested it the vacuum did indeed drop (I've done the 02pilot mod so initially had a much better vacuum reading) but much more significantly the car started to run very badly. Significant white smoke (it was dark but I'm certain it was oil) and almost stalling. Needless to say I got the hose reconnected asap and after a couple of mins and a restart the car cleared and - aside from a low idle (as before) - began to settle. I took it for a run and all was fine. I have tried the same procedure once more with the same result. I'm thinking that the oil control rings could be in very bad shape and removing what little vacuum is present in the crankcase is allowing oil to get into the cylinders. The car consumes oil at a similar rate to that discussed in your videos but emission tests at mot have always been very good. Have you any thoughts as to why the immediate oil burn? I've owned the car for around 100000 miles so know the service history is good. Thanks again

      When you replaced the CCV did you also clean out the dipstick tube and all the pipes. I see many comments where the oil cap is removed and oil is pulled into the intake. This is probably oil that is already clogged up in the pipes or engines that have high vacuum without the mod initially. Without the o2 mod there should very very little vacuum as shown in the video. If there is large vacuum without the o2 mod then I would not advise doing this mod as there is a problem elsewhere in the engine creating too much vacuum. The oil cap should be easy to remove and not be held down tight by excessive vacuum pulling it down. The non return valve inserted between the dipstick pipe is a preventative measure to stop the oil being sucked into the intake.

      @50sKid  7 років тому +3

      I went back to the stock system--no need for the 02Pilot mod now. No need to do the mod until your consumption actually gets bad. The one problem with the mod is if your valve cover gasket is a bit leaky, it can suck more air in through those leaks because you're putting the crankcase under vacuum and that would cause your fuel trims to go up which would make your mileage poorer.

    @gehmirnichtaufdienuesse6820 8 років тому

    I did the 02mod a while ago and it did cure my oil consumption completely. After that I decided to replace the CCV for new parts, since I suspected a vacuum leak somewhere. Shouldn't have done that, the consumption is back, even with the extra vacuum hose. What I noticed afterwards, is the fact that the vacuum is nowhere near as high with the new parts. I assume that the new spring in the CCV doesn't let the valve open wide enough to let the appropriate amount of vacuum get to the crankcase. That might explain, why some people experience higher oil consumption after replacing the CCV, as you mentioned in your previous video.

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  8 років тому +1

      Hmm, that's very strange and interesting. The thing about the vacuum being applied at the take off port is that it comes before the valve, so the valve would never stop that vacuum from being applied at the crankcase. I wonder if maybe your lines are clogged? Is there vacuum at the valve cover when you unplug the tube?

    • @gehmirnichtaufdienuesse6820
      @gehmirnichtaufdienuesse6820 8 років тому

      I checked the lines for clogging, didn't have any. I understand, that the extra line doesn't affect the valve, but since the CCV is connected to the intake manifold, there is vacuum applied to the valve membrane. Thing is, before I installed the new parts, the tube that connects to the valve cover already had some vacuum, even without the mod (maybe the old membrane was deformed/torn or its seat was clogged, which allowed some vacuum to get to the valve cover). Not too intense, but noticeable. After the mod, in addition to higher vacuum on said tube (with the old CCV), I also had vacuum in the dipstick tube, which I don't have with the new parts, go figure. I'll try a direct line from the valve cover to the intake manifold next, see how that turns out...

    At 5:53 the gauge shows almost no vacuum pressure because the with the CCV input hose connected to the gauge, the valve cover hole is wide open causing the crankcase to have zero pressure and the same inside the CCV. You need to plug up the VC hole.

    Great video again! I actually just did the 02pilot mod cause my E46 320i uses a lot of oil too. Also, some months ago I had the entire CCV system replaced (winter version). Applying the mod was easy. I used the large tube from the intake that was capped. And just like you I checked the vacuum with the same meter you use. And voila, the cauge reaches 18 mercury. But... soon it will drop back again no 0. When I repeat these steps, every time it reaches 18, but then soon drops again to 0. That isn't good right? What does it mean/what could be the problem? And how to fix it? Could it be that I used vacuum lines that are just a little too loose connected on the CCV and intake manifold? Or is there a leak somewhere else in the CCV? Please advice. Update: after measuring the vacuum yesterday, today I started the engine and a huuuuuuge amount of smoke came out the exhaust. My guess is that the o2pilot mod I did resulted in oil being sucked up from the oil pan when measuring the vacuum. What's ur guess? So today I decided to also install the non return valve. Result: the vacuum now stays at 18 mercury! Nice one. When measuring the vacuum the membrane in the CCV can be heard very loud. And sounds like a large balloon deflating. Did you hear this sound too when checking the vacuum? I wonder what it means.

    50skid thank you for this channel, really. I have a 2001 530i with the M54. It has about 70k miles on the clock (Japanese Export). I do not consider my oil consumption sever: Max 3/4 quart per 2500 km (round 1500 miles), and I use 10w40 (I live in a hot climate; 10 Celsius/50 Fahrenheit is the coldest it can get) .Probably in my case this mod will considerably reduce the already mild oil consumption. But I want to keep the car and I am wondering whether going for this mod or installing an oil catch can now would be of benefit to the engine (particularly piston rings) in the long run. Obviously, over time piston rings will gradually consume more and joint clearances will become bigger. My question is would any of these vacuum increasing mods make the rings consume faster as they're being pushed tighter towards cylinder walls for better seal? Perhaps, sticking with the ccv system only and waiting until the oil consumption becomes intolerable; let's say when mileage hits 130k, would get me the most out of the stock piston rings and would even save the cylinder liners as well. Of course with regular oil change every 5000 miles. I know this video has been here for a while and am a bit late, but I would really appreciate your thought about this and you will help me decide.

      Ahmed Al Kerraz I simply have no data to confirm one way or the other whether this will cause increased wear of the piston rings, however you are balancing potential wear with the definite fact that burning oil causes caked on gunk to build up between the rings, in the ring lands, and on top of the piston.

      Thank you for your reply. That's a good point. Honestly, I never took into account solid deposits building up that would likely cause more damage and wear. So, I guess am going for the 02pilot mod for now at least.

      in the oil return line that goes from the oil separator to the dipstick tube. You cut it in half and install the valve inline

      No don't do it until you have the oil consumption. If your valve cover is leaking in any way, it will cause slightly poorer gas mileage.

      @50sKid Some questions.
      it is mandatory to install check valve on return line or it should be bypassed? How you think by increasing vacuum is it possible that lubrication of the cylinders will decrease?

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  8 років тому +1

      Haha, that's awesome. I haven't tried this exact mod without the check valve. I would say that given the size of that small vacuum line, it's probably not enough air flow to suck up the oil so you can probably get away with it. But if you get blue smoke out of your tail pipe, get a check valve.

    Hi Jason! Do you think doing the o2 pilot mod without overhauling the ccv first, could cause rod knock? My car died shortly after doing this mod, producing a knocking noise. I got it started on a downhill section of road and it was knocking quite badly. Some mayo on oil cap and inside of valve cover that wasn't there literally 100 km before doing this - I overhauled the vanos shortly before doing the o2 pilot mod.

    50s, isn't the stock vaccum around 16 mbar (0.5 inHg)?
    18 inHg seems like a lot of pressure for the seals to last, it's 0.4 bar of absolute pressure inside the Crankcase.

    This is a great video - I’m going to try and install this at the same time as changing the oil filter housing gasket, with the help from another great video of yours.
    I’m in the UK and have a 320Ci - my question is regarding this new hose. If we’re using the smaller vacuum port, can we use one size hose? Is it the same sized port on each size?

    I have a 2004 Bmw 325xi, when the car is in drive and stopped the car starts to vibrate. Once I accelerate the vibration stops. There's a 140,000 miles on the car. I took it to Bmw. Motor mounts and transmission mounts were replaced. They say it's just a old car. Can you please give me your suggestion.

    • @50sKid

      Vibration could be coming from the power steering pump or the water pump or even the engine oil pump. It could also be coming from the transmission oil pump. Basically any of the pumps.

    Thanks Jason, I completed the 02Pilot Mod on a 2005 325xi with 229k in Massachusetts. At 7:30 you mention 2 of the 3 rear ports are capped off but the 325xi's here only cap the large port. The two smaller ports are connected in this manner..
    4mm port upper > vacuum hose > pierburg check valve (black/white) > vacuum hose > check valve near secondary air pump
    4mm port lower > vacuum hose > vacuum tank (black)
    At first the vehicle idled and drove great, but when slowing down to take a off ramps the vehicle idles low, and when stopping the vehicle stalls unless I pump the gas.
    Are these vehicles vacuum systems not properly routed? And if so, should 1 of the 2 smaller ports be capped?

    • @50sKid

      Try removing and cleaning your idle air control valve. You want to make sure it rattles when you shake it. I recently had to clean mine again. Sprayed some wd-40 inside to lube it up and get it freed.

    Hi I have a question. I loved your video with the whiteboard showing how either the O2 pilot mod or your new pcv valve/catch can setup generates vacuum on the crankcase in order to "reseal" the oil rings. Makes sense how this would stop oil burning completely. But now that you have constant vacuum on the crankcase, have you noticed oil level dropping by burning oil through the CCV system rather than through the piston rings? Perhaps it just burns less? This engine doesn't appear to have a breather hose for air crossflow through the crankcase - maybe that's why it burns less oil? Really curious about what you think.

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  7 років тому

      No you don't get increased oil consumption through the CCV system because, in the case of the catch can setup, there is a PCV valve in the system, and with the 02Pilot mod, we're only using a 1/8" vacuum line to apply a small amount of vacuum. It's not enough to suck any oil.

    • @crookedreality
      @crookedreality 7 років тому

      OK I see. So any atomized oil droplets will not be enough to affect the oil level?

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  7 років тому

      With the 02Pilot mod? No you still have the oil separator in the system. With the catch can, the can itself acts as the oil separator.

    • @crookedreality
      @crookedreality 7 років тому

      Oh right, I see. With the 02Pilot mod, the crankcase vapors still have to go through the oil separator, so you're good. But what have you noticed with your catch can setup? Quite a bit of oil in the can? Or pretty moderate?

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  7 років тому

      Didn't keep the catch can very long--I moved on to the 02Pilot mod and then I rebuilt my engine.

    I don't have that port on the ccv, 04 325xi..... *UPDATE* So I have the "cold weather" ccv version, so it's like wrapped in a protective shroud, so I couldn't see the vacuum nipple. So I took long needle nose pliers and ripped/tore a hole in the shroud around the ccv after I realized why I wasn't seeing the vacuum port. Then it was right there. I only had to take off the airbox and half of the throttle body elbow. I used 3/16id vacuum hose on the ccv port, and 1/4id vacuum hose on the back of the intake, both from Napa. And I did slide the hoses into each other aswell.
