While also reinforcing that this is the Federation’s 1st attempt at a Mobile Armor. Anaheim made it akin to EFSF’s aesthetic of function-first design philosophy; how elegant it looked was secondary. Even in the series, the Zeon mocked its appearance as an unassuming hulk. Then it’s shows off giant beam sabers, dozens of missiles, an overly enormous beam bazooka, ridiculously huge engines for its size, a prototype deflector shield...oh, and it holds a Gundam too!
Unit 3, is like the A-10 Warthog to me; yeah it’s ugly, but isn’t it sexy when you see how much ass it can kick?!

Oh, I loved it even before watching the show because of how overkill it is. It's like they told the mechanical designer to go nuts and come up with the dumbest, cheesiest thing he could think of for the final battle, while still making it work in-universe and he went and actually did it.

    • @1987MartinT

I think the Dendrobium does look kinda intimidating with just how fucking huge it is. However it does also look kinda silly due to how tiny the head is compared to the rest of it. It's like the space marine power armour from Warhammer 40.000 taken to the next extreme. So I guess I can see both pros and cons here.

Then later when it is explained--everybody is just really confused and cannot believe it happened--and let's be honest, that would make sense for once for how people are confused. Zeon in all their addresses just indirectly threatens various other cities with "joining the Space Colony Independence movement!"

As a fan of Gundam, to me, 0083 is some where in the middle. I will agree that the animation and scenery is the best in the series - if not, one of the best. As for the colony drop, the reason factions tend to go for that plan is because it's a method that causes a lot of damage, as well as somewhat easy to do. And given that there are plenty of space colonies floating around (inhabited or uninhabited), it's still a scary thing knowing that something can be used to such a devastating effect. I mean, the first colony drop in the UC timeline wiped Sydney, Australia and everything around it off the map, leaving nothing but a crater and everything around it for many miles a wasteland (and I think also polluted the Earth with the amount of smoke it produced). And in Gundam X, many colonies dropping caused the Earth's population to nearly be wiped out. One of man's greatest achievements can easily be turned into its own destruction when used by the wrong hands...... and it's hard to stop it once its course is set. That's why colony drops are used often: hard to stop, easy to execute, not really in short supply, and can leave devastating effects and destruction.

GP03 is a weapons system platform with the "Dendrobium Stamen" being the main MS and the "Orchis" being a huge set of tools changing the GP03 from a Mobile Suit into a Mobile Armor. Its a rad design that sadly did not have enough lead in time and just kind of appeared out of nowhere. I am actually pretty glad that some as oversized and utilitarian as the Orchis was used only sparily.

0083 still has the single most powerful Gundam ever put to the franchise, a single shot from its Canon is enough to vaporize any other Gundam and it doesn't even need to hit them with it, just something that puts the target with the outer 1/4 of its actual radius. But then again a bean cabin that is powered by the detonation of a thermo nuclear bomb, and yes that is what it does, it doesn't fire the warhead or internally detonates it and then uses it to power its beam Canon, the shield contains large amounts of coolant as well as a blast shield. Granted the middle finger to physics behind this concept is so big and hard it could simultaneously shatter diamonds while eclipsing mount everest as the tallest peak.

One thing that bothers me about 0083 is the way villains are potrayed and it's arguably the turning point for how Zeon has been portrayed by the franchise since, unlike in the original shows. Don't get me wrong, Gato and Delaz are both fun, but the anime tries to present them as these noble patriotic warrior types you're meant admire in their tragic quest and Cima as this disloyal traitorous bitch even worse than them and like... Their plan is to go out in blaze of glory by (even incidentally) killing millions as a revenge on Federation for no letting space Hitler conquer Earth. Like, yes, Zeon characters have been presented sympathetically before, but that was about them as people, and definitely not about Zeon as a something worth fighting or dying for.
Come on, not all romance in Gundam is bad. What about Domon and Rain? Well, I suppose Sage may not have seen G Gundam yet so...

That's actually a very good way to present villains. They don't think they're the bad guys; most villains are the good guys in their own mind. Very few bad guys actually are open about being evil; many are just misguided or good-natured people who happened to fight for the wrong side or were tainted by evil ideologies. The Zeon patriots, in particular, would be good honest men in any other age, it's just that they simp for a mass-murdering psychopath and see him as their rightful lord. That's how most of history was like. Many people whom we saw as the ''bad guys'' who followed the likes of Adolf, Stalin, and Mao, were just normal folks who thought they were fighting for their nation's glory and for the good of their people. They died thinking that they were saving the world.

18:22 Just wanted to point out that the Antarctic Treaty that banned nuclear weapons was in effect defunct by UC 0083. After the end of the One Year War of UC 0079, the Principality of Zeon surrendered and was dissolved and replaced by the new state known as the Republic of Zeon. However, the Delaz fleet didn't recognize the surrender and in their eyes the war was still going on and thus the Antarctic Treaty was still active. The problem with their logic is ill-informed and egregiously mistaken:
    1) The war was over, Zeon lost with a formal surrender.
    2) The Principality of Zeon that signed the treaty no longer exists.
    3) The treaty only forbids the use of nuclear arms, but does not specifically ban development of nuclear platforms.
    4) During the time that the treaty was active, Zeon attempted to violate the terms at least twice during the OYW.
...Also, you can't ignore the hypocrisy of the Delaz fleet in both claiming that the treaty was still active and then using the nuke themselves.

The reason Gundam 0083 is my favorite is because it was the first time out of any anime I watched up to that time that I found myself going from hating the antagonist, to wanting the antagonist to win. If you view Gundam 0083 in a historical context, it's a story not about the protagonist but a story about the damned. When I see Gundam 0083 it reminds me of people like Hanna Reitsch, Otto Schorzeny, Leon Degrelle, and Hans Ulric Rudel. Die heart, loyal to the cause, till their deaths. The kind of people whom's only regret in WWII was that they 'lost." When I see Gundam 0083, I see one of the most important works in the Gundam Franchise, because it dares to tread those waters. You get to see the idealistic fanaticism that drove Zeon, the same kind that made Episode 4 At the Bottom of the Gravity Well from Gundam Unicorn so powerful. But Gundam 0083 the entire narrative was this, not just one episode.

Colony drops seem to do the most damage on the Earth and anything Federation related to the point where Zeon uses it as their main tactic to strike fear into the Federation and the people living on Earth. Let's be honest, unless there is another way to do that much damage then they would do it but the Universal Century doesn't seem to have weapons like that, or at least none have been made with those capabilities in certain points in time. Granted, Zeon seems to use these drops on Earth for places to hurt the Federation military since 0083's colony was dropped on the North American Mass Grainery which caused a food shortage and the first colony that hit Australia was meant to hit Jaburou instead but the Federation's interference made it hit Australia instead.
As for why the Federation made a nuclear based Gundam, I would assume it would have to do with wanting to have it just in case Zeon or any other anti Federation group appeared then they would have it to strike. Plus, the Federation and Zeon have shown to ignore the Antarctic Treaty on multiple occasions and Origin showed that it was just a small courtesy to make it look like no one wanted massive blood shed and it didn't amount to anything; it really doesn't after the One Year War. Plus, Anahiem has been known to really profit from making such weapons that it wouldn't surprise me that they had someone in the Federation convince higher ups to make a gundam like that.

As I recall it, the GP02 isn't the first potential, nuclear-armed Gundam-- there's some old artwork for something called the Soloman Express, I can't recall if it was ever really made in canon. There were also designs for nuke-deploying Zakus from the start of the War. The general idea is that a nuclear-armed Gundam would be a lot more maneuverable than a warship, and could slip in to nuke a target with far more ease. The reason why this was thought to be necessary was that big, expensive Solar Ray and colony laser systems were quite vulnerable to deal with attempted asteroid or colony drop operations. Zeon's efforts at kinetic warfare through asteroids and other large objects was a potent threat, and having a way to disable or break up such attempts was quite valuable, not to mention Zeon, and later Axis Zeon, had habits of hiding in thick, asteroid fortresses. Sometimes having a nuclear blast in the right area would be vital in dealing with the problem, without wasting thousands of men and hundreds of mobile suits in assaulting asteroids or defended colonies. Now, I'm not sure on why that logic simply doesn't allow for nuke-armed warships anymore, but still, that's the general concept I've interpreted from what I've read.

  • @SwiftGundam
    @SwiftGundam 5 років тому +21

On the Nuclear warhead going against the Antarctic Treaty, there are two factors that make that make that claim hollow. One is that Zeon already breached the treaty during the OYW at the Battle of Odessa. The second is that the treaty was with the Principality of Zeon which does not exist anymore as it was restructured back into a Republic, so that Treaty is now null and void.
Though, yeah, I'd like to know why they made a Gundam with the purpose of deploying a nuke, though I think the 0083 retelling manga, Rebellion covered that.

I think if you like those 3 i think its safe to say you will find something to appreciate in the rest of the main story lines (universal century). The rest of the story lines/universes are fine for their own reasons but id generally stay away from Gundam wing and Seed. I found them super cringey and hard to watch as an adult haha. But they are fine back ground noise if your on your phone.

Yes the later never got a dub* but i still HIGHLY recommend this to any self-respecting Gundam-NAY any self-respecting ANIME Fan period! It is in a way Gundam DONE RIGHT, at least in my Honest-to-Goodness Humble Opinion. But still, in again my humblest opinion the Domon/Rain Romance and the Garrod Ran/TIffa Adill Romance are the two best examples of Gundam Romances done right and Sage, even with a sub I Highly recommend you check out Gundam X if only to get a bead on the thing lol.

    *Things to like about 0083:*
1.) Quality vintage. It's basically the spirit of the late-80s/early-90s with S-tier production values.
    2.) Anavel Gato
3.) Anavel Gato fighting Kou Uraki
4.) All that shit with Kelly
5.) Has an oddly "real" quality many Gundam series don't. It's not WitP or anything, but something about 0083 just works, and it honestly feels more UC than a number of other UC entries.
Also, GP03 is fine. The mini arms race is exciting, and seeing Kou & Gato in gigantic mobile armors just laying waste to scores of conventional MS or putting down flagships between their frenzied bouts w/ one another rly sells just how out of hand things have gotten. GP03s form & function in particular totally embody this IMO
((tho if that huge mass was its reg bod & it just had a stupid lil baby head anyway I would hate him it only rly works for me w/ the knowledge that theres a whole nother dude inside))

I am a very old Gundam fan who watched the original back in 1979. I agree with some of your points. Well, this is probably the best Gundam title with none of those New Type carp, which gets more problematic to me, and with more grounded militaristic tactics, politics, and plottings (or you may call it "Real Real Robots") you can get in the UC timeline. No "0080 War in the Pocket" does not count because the story is mainly from a civilian child pov. Well since the very first real militaristic Gundam -- the legendary "Gundam Sentinel" may never get animated in my lifetime (due to the hatred of one nasty old man), this is the closest Gundam Sentinel I can probably ever get. If you consider yourself a real Gundam fan, go and read the Gundam Sentinel novel or buy that big ass photo book which contains the novel, in Japanese, and all the background kinds of stuff.
Sure, this series has a lot of problems and plot holes as big as the Moon and not even the movie version cannot fix them. If you go for the action and the pacing, especially when Albion returns to space, the whole narrative gets much improved and more believable over time. Unfortunately, the real climax is the duel at Solomon and the story would be very satisfying if it ended there! It may sound a bit over-extended after Solomon but it is kinda just justifiable to tie up all the ends which lead to the rise of Titans. Also, the inclusion of Axis enriches the story a lot.
One PoV I can say is the main characters are not that bad, both Kou and Gato remain who they are from the start till the end: the former is still a rookie and kinda simple and navie, the latter is still a stubborn soldier who lives being loyal to Delaz, and gets revenge on the Feds. Both meet the ends they deserve (evil grin). Oh, you can say they gain no character improvement, but hey the whole mess happens in a very short time period. Yes, the character of Nina is a real problem but it was not that apparent and thanks for pointing that out.
I think the inclusion GP03S is kinda justified storywise -- if the Zeon has Mobile Armors in the war, why can't the Fed has one after the OYW? They, by then, have the tech and the resources to build one on their own. I mean at least one. Moreover, Gato is getting one, why not Kou gets one for himself? Do you think the show would be as realistic if Kou fights a MA in a regular MS? Note also that MA vs MA is never a thing before 0083. These OP monsters battle happens only here and to the best of my memory, it is never done again!
Also, please note there is a manga version of the story called "Gundam 0083: Rebellion", retelling the story and adds new supporting characters, new MS and fixes some of the issues of the story. Spoilers: You get a very cool MA show up in Africa and Dick Allen gets a more heroic death rather than dying lame as in the OVA.

I was waiting for you to mention the intro. It was my cellphone ring tone for awhile after high school.

It's nice to see some 0083 love. It's not my favorite by a long shot but it's such a beautifully animated show.
    JEEG! BUILD UP!

G Gundam was the only Gundam I could get into and couldn’t watch the others due to how dumb it was sitting through the other versions.

I loved CM Garahue and kou didn't. Cima was supposed to be a Titan. Not an Aieg.

Well Nina was infuriating and what happened to Cima sucks, but I really liked Bask's speech. Plus Mora and Keith lived without putting on black uniforms so that's a plus.

I recall Gundam Seed Destiny having the biggest "Gundam" I've ever seen that was capable of shooting laser beams all over the place and was piloted by a sociopath blondie girl who was a love interest of one of the main cast heroes regardless. That was hilarious and awkward at the same time.
