What an embarrassing moment for Blue Origin. You know that feeling when everyone is hyped about an upcoming product, but when it finally arrives, it turns out to be a disappointment? That’s exactly what happened with Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket. From the beginning, Blue Origin and SpaceX were seen as perfect competitors. Both companies were founded by ambitious billionaires around the same time-Jeff Bezos for Blue Origin and Musk for SpaceX. This similarity in their origins made the competition seem perfect and fair. However, while SpaceX has launched hundreds of rockets and developed multiple successful spacecraft, Blue Origin has mostly been in the news for its failed tests and lawsuits.
One of SpaceX’s rockets that truly left Blue Origin in the dust was the Starship. This was a game-changer, and it put immense pressure on Blue Origin to prove itself by developing something equally powerful and ambitious. In response, Blue Origin announced the New Glenn rocket, which was supposed to be a large, reusable rocket that could rival SpaceX’s heavy-lift vehicles. However, for more than a decade, New Glenn remained largely a paper project, with little to show in terms of public tests or tangible progress. Jeff Bezos faced increasing criticism for the lack of results, and it became clear that Blue Origin needed to make a big move.
Recently, in an effort to regain credibility and show the world that New Glenn was more than just a concept, Blue Origin decided to conduct a test. Expectations were high, and there was significant buzz in the aerospace community. However, what followed was nothing short of a disaster. During the transportation of New Glenn’s upper stage, the structure crumpled-an incident that was likely caused by improper handling during extreme temperature changes. This wasn’t just a minor setback; it was a catastrophic failure that cast serious doubts on Blue Origin’s ability to deliver on its promises.
But the problems didn’t end there. Shortly after the transportation incident, another upper stage of the New Glenn rocket exploded during a stress test. The explosion was likely caused by excessive pressure, a basic issue that one would expect to be carefully managed in any serious aerospace project. These incidents didn’t involve the hardware for the upcoming debut mission, but they have certainly raised questions about the rocket’s overall reliability and Blue Origin’s readiness to enter the highly competitive space launch market.

I am not understanding the controversy here? Part of the formula for SapceX's success is they have not been afraid to blow up a few rockets while testing. Better to find the flaws while nobody is on board or you're not carrying expensive cargo. Why is Blue Origin having a test explosion such a harbinger of doom?

The problem is the rate at which they build their vehicles.
SpaceX is building them faster than what they can launch. BO is not.

One of “controversial” occurrences was a massively simple mistake of not following instructions regarding pressure vents. An “oopsie” of the highest order and stupidity.
“Oops, I forgot to set the vents, and the tank imploded”
The need for such venting has been known for a couple of centuries. It wasn’t ’rocket science’ nor ‘push the envelope’.
Sort of like that other “Oops, I forgot to install a bolt, and the fuselage plug flew off in flight” fiasco.

The explosion is not embarrassing. Every rocket designer and builder has had set backs. NASA, SpaceX, Roscosmos, and the European Space Agency have all had explosions. It is good for the future of space exploration to have competition, even on a national scale.

Some failure is ok. Failing a ground test this late in development looks bad.
Losing a booster going from Florida outside to air conditioning brings into question the rocket safety.
Blue Origin is an older company than SpaceX and still hasn't achieved orbit while Rocket Labs and other newer entrants have.
      Starship obsoletes New Glenn.

There is huge difference between mission hardware, that is supposed to have all the bugs eliminated, blowing up, and SpaceXs test flights that are all development experiments. There is also a huge difference between finding a design flaw as SpaceX does, versus explosions or damage to mission hardware as a result of incompetence, as with BO and Boeing. DEI.

Blue Origin are suffering similar explosions and challenges that Spacex have suffered - how many take off and landing trials of Starship were carried out before the first successful landing? So hammering on Blue Origin does not give them the same space given to Spacex. Admittedly, Blue Origin have been very secretive with very little information being let out to the public. Their whole motto has been to engineer out faults with 110% engineering. As an engineer, I can tell you that, no matter how much you look at a design challenge, there will always be something that pops up that you did not expect. And then you deal with it...

Blue Origin should have spent its money or rocket design instead of lawsuits to try and slow down the competition, or maybe they hired to many Boeing employees. From what I have read working at B.O. is toxic. Some have said the same about working for Elon, but there is a huge difference between a hard job pushing 60-80hrs per week that requires excellence vs 40hrs at a toxic work environment. Managment makes the difference between a great company or hated company to work for, ben there done that!!
