    It's nice to see the developer stopped by, took the criticism professionally, and interacted with people. Respect for that. My advice to the dev for future projects would be to reel in the scope, it's better to do a few things well than a lot of things poorly.

    Hey guys, 3089 developer here! Thank you for the video, Jim Sterling. My first suggestion would be to watch the "Quick Guide" on Steam, next to the trailer -- since it looks like Jim didn't use the run feature at all (which is why he was moving so slow). This is also explained in the Quick Tips he skimmed over. I'm also working on making some improvements to the aesthetics, but many do enjoy the graphics which are meant to be simplistic & cartoony. You can head over to the Steam forums to read the discussion & also check the reviews section, which is overwhelmingly positive for good reason! Anyway, if this game isn't your fancy, thank you for at least stopping by & have a good day!

      Garrick Backer Thank you! It can be tough when a popular UA-cam player like Jim makes such a negative video -- I just hope people realize this is one person's opinion and if you played with a bit more attention to what the game is trying to tell you to do, I think he would have had a much better time. I hope other players decide to try it out for themselves. I can't guarantee you'll like it, but you just might -- many do!

      in addition I played this when it was in alpha state, which was in an indieroyale bundle I think.... but even back then I thought it looked better than now, you might have taken a wrong turn somewhere

      oOMetalheadOo Interesting observation... many of the changes I made visually can be changed in the "Effects Config", like the "Toon Mode" and ambient occlusion, if you prefer the (really) old look better.

    He didn't play the game correctly. Just took it at face value to make a funny video. He complains about how slow you move but never once used the sprint button or a hover-board.
    I bought this game a few days ago and have been absolutely hooked. The gameplay itself plays better than most shooters I have played in a while, mostly due to the fact that using the skill point system allows you to play the game in any style you want.
    There are little to no bugs, the game functions perfectly fine.
    You explore the map doing quests or fighting towers to add skill points. You see something, you go there. The further from your starting point the harder the enemies. I have found some really cool geographical structures and the robots wandering around make the game feel really alive. It's like being inside a world inside a computer. The customization is insane. Multiple parts make up every weapon or piece of armor.
    This review is not a proper assessment of what the game is actually like. Look past the graphics, this is a great game.

      Thank you for the response! I'm glad you are enjoying my game and I had the same thought -- I wish Jim paid a little more attention to the Quick Tips & do what the game was telling him. However, I think he purposefully didn't give the game much chance because he didn't like the visuals. Oh well.. I hope people still try it out for themselves!

      For some feedback based solely on what I just watched,the tips and guide could be presented better. Being forced to read them before starting seems really grating and I'm not sure I'd even properly skim through if forced. Farting around, looking for the equipment dispensers seemed like a real enthusiasm killer too, they could stand to be more accessible from the start. Overall, I see a lot of the discovery not being worth the effort in this video. Find equipment dispenser, but it costs money; find a building, but it's empty; find a sword, but it's just a piece of a sword. In the case of the sword, finding the workbench early on would open up the desire to find pieces to assemble with it. A short tutorial-style stage might help.

  • @hunter06292

    I think it's lovely that the developer him or herself decided to stop by on this video and is taking the criticism in stride. That speaks volumes about the method behind this madness.
    I've played a bit of this game... personally I didn't find it too particularly fun or boring. It was just kind of... an experience. You shoot things, you craft things, you take over territory and do quests - pretty much just as promised. So it's unfair to really call it a bad game, since it delivers what it promises in what can be called a decent manner.
    I imagine the dev isn't still bothering with this video's comments and I'm too lazy to make a twitter account just to give my feedback to him or her, so I'm not going to bother. Instead, if you're reading these comments I encourage you to at least have a look at the game yourself because it really isn't as terrible as Jim makes it out to be, it's just not particularly great either - but a developer will only be able to improve a game so much without people playing it and giving feedback.

      Spooky Spartacus I actually stopped by to check the comments, and I'm glad I did. Criticisms come in all forms, some deserved and some manufactured, but often result in improvements. I do hope people give 3089 a try, they may find it much more enjoyable than Jim did. My newer games, 4089 and beyond, does many things differently from the start -- so even if you don't like 3089, please check out what else I have to offer.

      +Phr00t's Software This is driving me crazy, but can you point me into a DETAILED tutorial on how to use workstations? I have two parts, the outter part of a chip, and the inner circle part, I press E on the workstation... what next, I've pressed right click on each of the part, nothing happens other than "cannot do that" it's frustrating me. A video tutorial would be best.

    This game becomes more interesting if you open the map, mouse over close building and se that there are stations that alow you to do some stuff.
    One of the more important one being the "quest" station. This gives you quests that alows you to gain stats.
    The other important one being the workbench. that allows you to dissasemble and assemble parts of weapons. Different parts having different stats and abilities.
    Sadly these things are not that well communicated in the game.
    Haven't been playing this game for a very long time tho, so i can't really tell if there is alot too it yett tho.

      By getting thousands and thousands of votes :-) I'm glad Jim made a video, but I do think he painted a pretty poor picture of my game because he made very little attempt to follow the Quick Tips & understand the game. That is OK, though, everyone has their opinion and wants to play games certain ways.

    • @TheRadioSquare
      @TheRadioSquare 11 років тому +4

      phr00t Because your game doesn't deserve a good picture.
      You claim that art style is deliberately "simplistic" and "cartoony" while in fact it's just lazy, barely any improvement from 3079 too. Antichamber and Proteus are simplistic, deliberately so. Simplicity in color and overall visual design of those games helped to build an atmosphere, set a stage and immerse players. Sam & Max, Don't Starve, Torchlight and Team Fortress 2 are cartoony, one glance is enough to realize that is an aesthetic decision. All these games i mention went for the design decision that you claim to have made and yet all those games look infinitely better than 3089. There wasn't a single thing worth looking at throughout the video. Robots look like something a kindergartener can draw. Big open spaces filled with nothing but low-poly trees, low-poly rocks, boxes and empty cubes filled with disappointment and covered by putrid textures. This game has absolutely nothing going aside from some of the soundtrack. As a I understand you're one man team, everybody knows it's hard to make a game and it's even harder. That's why there are people who spends years of their free time and their money like Vince Twelve, Daisuke Amaya, Jonathan Blow, Lukas Pope or Alexander Bruce, developer of said Antichamber. And then there are people with high self esteem that don't care much about the quality and just take a bunch of shortcuts.

    phr00t, I have to say that I am not trying to make a judgment on your work and that you appear to have been polite and downright friendly throughout, however your omnipresence in every comment that sounds even slightly negative towards your work doesn't paint you in the best light. I am not saying that you shouldn't defend your game or that you are entirely in the wrong, just when you take it to this level it looks like you can't take criticism. As an indie dev, your personal image can be almost as important to your success as the games you create. If you remember when Jonathan Blow would magically appear whenever anyone would talk about Braid and what that did for his image, you have an idea of what I mean (not that he isn't also incredibly successful, just that he looked a bit immature). All of that being said, thank you for being a respectable person throughout and keep creating, the more the merrier in our gaming community.

      Well it shows that he cares, and it's valid for him to be around and try to prove that the reviewer was a piece of sh-t, or at least incapable of playing the game in a manner it was designed to be played. Although I won't say there is no room for improvements, he didn't bother to read the "game guide", essentially that's like playing Chess without knowing the rules and then bitching about how you can't use your units the way you want to use them.

    Well, can't really say this video did this game any justice. There are ALOT more features in this game than what was shown. Problem is he didn't really take the time to explore them. Those guides on there are pretty much a must read if you want any kind of direction. Graphics are hardly an excuse to really bash a game. Especially when all those pretty little particles and details tend to go unnoticed after playing longer than 30 minutes or are turned off for more framerate(not to mention alienating the rest of the people who like to game but can't simply fit in a fancy 2,000 dollar gaming rig or has the technical know how to overclock it without frying their components). I'd trade game play for graphics any day as long as the interface isn't a hassle(Dwarf Fortress).

      With art tools like Blender and GIMP--and even just MS Paint!--all you have to do is care *a little bit* to make graphics that are at least an order of magnitude better. First impressions are vital. If you as a person meet someone for the first time and you are dressed like a homeless person, they probably aren't going to take the time to figure out that underneath the smelly rags is an individual they might really like. This game does the game-equivalent of going around dressed like a homeless person and wonders why nobody gives it a chance. Considering how flooded the indie game market is with shit if you want to succeed you have to do everything possible to differentiate yourself. But this game got lucky, out of the mass of indie games vying to be noticed, it is being reviewed by a fairly prominent UA-cam personality so it has its chance to show that... the developers cared as much about the UI and the story, and the gameplay, and the music as they cared about the graphics. That is, not at all.

    Awesome. I learned of this game a few days ago, and it became THE game I was hoping Jim would make a video of.
    This game seems quite interesting, and unfortunately Jim didn't seem to give it enough of a chance. The first impression the game gives doesn't seem great, so it's hard to fault him for it.
    I also don't expect Jim to heavily research every game he decides to make a video on, so I'm not mad at him for insulting the graphics or the apparent vapidness of the start of the game.
    However, I also think that expecting high-quality graphics in a vast randomly-generated open-world game designed by one person (whose talents may lie principally in aspects other than visual/graphical art) is a bit unreasonable.
    I'm sad Jimothy had a bad time with this game (though exciting things started happening towards the end). Perhaps he went in expecting something instantaneously exciting like Paranautical Activity, and wasn't ready to devote Skyrim-esque lengths of time to discovering 3089's depth.
    I'm still on the fence as to whether I'll purchase it myself. Still working through a dozen other games from my backlog at the moment. But I think this game seems worth a second look, so hopefully viewers don't dismiss it outright because of this video.

    Before phr00t can reply to this saying I did something wrong, I picked up the game today to do a review for it and gave it a spin. It has alot of potential wrapped up in horrible graphics, a 15year old interface and reminds me of Duke Nukem 3D. I'm not saying its bad, I'm just saying, its not great. The music is fantastic and I really enjoyed it but actually playing the game is very slow and feels like a trudge through mud. The graphics feel oversized, like your playing as a guy whos maybe an inch tall, so everything feels out of proportion. If it didnt have the voxel graphics and had its own type of art style or direction it could be a fun game but right now, your being presented with a very ugly game that plays like a walk through waist high wet sand. Think Jim did it some justice in his review, and I'm glad to see I wasnt the only one who felt the same.

    • @phr00t
      @phr00t 11 років тому +6

      You certainly did nothing wrong! I am not saying anyone with a negative (or positive) opinion is doing anything wrong. I completely expect people to not like my game, that just comes with the territory of having an indie game -- not everyone is going to like the decisions I made. I actually thank you for at least trying to the game out & I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it. The game is still under development & improvements are coming, but I can't guarantee you or other people will be satisfied. With that said, many do enjoy the game & graphics, so it is definitely worth trying. Just also keep in mind, this game is much more enjoyable if you give the game more of a chance and pay more attention to the tips.

    • @davekooper
      @davekooper 11 років тому

      phr00t Figured you'd reply, just didnt expect it so fast. I actually admire that you're defending your creation, and I want people to know that they should try it, 6euro is really nothing. I just think, currently, there's alot of wasted potential in the game. The world feels dead most of the time, there's nothing happening outside of minor battles or semi larger scale ones, the world has no life. The art style is horrible, its not attractive at all. The weapons are well textured, but against the world that's not hard. Smaller tiles for the landscape would be a way to remedy this, right now it looks like one massive panel that just has paint slapped on it, but I'll say it does look nice how it blends in with other "biomes" for lack of a better word. The game could be alot of fun, but like you said, still in development, so there is room for improvement. I'll keep up with it and hopefully see more I like, right now I don't think it'd be fair or right to write up anything about the game, I've seen better come out of Greenlit, but I've seen way way worse, so keep up the hard work, and I hope in future I can come back and see more I like.

    • @phr00t
      @phr00t 11 років тому +7

      ***** Thank you for the response. I'm proud of my work, but I'm also interested in hearing feedback & cutting through the "this is terrible" vague statements and finding out why -- and better, if there are any suggestions to improve things. Smaller tiles for the landscape is possible, but the polygon count jumps dramatically, which may change how far stuff can be drawn (particularly on lower-end machines).
      What kinds of things would bring the world more life for you that robot battles and quests are not?

    Jim, you said you needed a better mouse.
    My recommendations: Roccat Kone XTD is wonderfully smooth, thumb buttons slightly high for my taste(pretty standard), one thumb button acts as a set-shift so you can have double functions on all the other buttons. Tilt buttons on the scroll-wheel are also nice.
    Redragon Perdition has tons of programmable buttons(very similar to Razer Naga), I'm not finding it to be quite as smooth as the Roccat though(but it gets better if you lower DPI from 16400 to 8200, same as the max on the Roccat and Mionix), and the thumb buttons, while more numerous and easy to access, are a bit on the stiff side. Also might be that it needs a breaking in period(just got it today, used it for 15 minutes before I had to head to work).
    For ones I haven't tried: Mionix Naos 8200 looks very good, or if you're a claw-gripper, Steelseries Sensei pro grade. R.A.T.7 (or 9 for wireless) are apparently quite good, comfortable, and adjustable, but with durability issues.

    • @OnlyKaerius
      @OnlyKaerius 11 років тому

      As a disclaimer: I'm a palm-resting-on-pad palmgripper, though the Roccat and Mionix ones should work with palm further forward resting on mouse. The Redragon might work for that, but it's a little short.

    I'm sure there is an interesting idea within this game, but its not displayed at all, which is a shame. A starting area, small in size, with clear simple tutorial objectives might make the more open areas more appealing and clearer to the player..

    • @phr00t
      @phr00t 11 років тому +10

      It doesn't look like Jim takes a single quest in this video, which is what the starting messages tell him to do. He also didn't buy any armor, which was suggested by the "Q" tips. Anyway, he could have had a much more enjoyable time, but I don't think he gave the game much of a chance.

    • @Zhuinden
      @Zhuinden 11 років тому +1

      I do admit it was surprising that he never even read about how quests work, and all he did was "run" out without actually running to murder some random stuff and didn't take a single quest, in an RPG. Like, wtf.

    • @mikeegee21
      @mikeegee21 11 років тому

      What I'm meaning is Jim is doing a quick play of the game. Wanting to jump straight in. And there is no real structure for that. We all know that games nowadays need to be clear and to the point for gamers to pick up and play, and pick up the gameplay.

    • @komradechangnikoff
      @komradechangnikoff 11 років тому +3

      To be fair to Jim, reading all that stuff would make for a boring video for us poor Chunguses. Maybe, Mr. Phr00t, you could implement some kind of sectioned-off tutorial thing different from the main game the way that games like Deus Ex and the original Half Life did? Reading about how to do something and actually practicing it are two different things entirely, and the 'wall-of-text in the menu' approach to tutorials is a bit overwhelming and off-putting. But hey, your game, do what you will.

  • @renato360a
    @renato360a 11 років тому

    Well, Mr. Jim, you did a pretty darn good job of showing people how NOT to play this game. There's a small reading to do before we jump into the "action", the game guide, it's REALLY brief, and it's not like we all haven't watched Stars Wars before, is it? After not introducing yourself to the game mechanic you roam aimlessly waiting for something to happen, what is clearly agains't gameplay directives. First thing you should do is to complete a Quest. It's in the tips.
    That said, I urge people to disregard this video entirely in deciding if the game is interesting or not. I hate Minecraft graphics, but dig the "cell shading" done here, I think the game looks nice (in the same way I think Quake II will always look nice). Hell, this game is forcing me to put Borderlands 2 and other so-called AAA games aside. If Phroot had a whole studio, maybe we could get to impose something "bigger" from 3089, but developing such an ingenious game on your own is not exactly a walk in the park.

  • @datanon3059
    @datanon3059 11 років тому

    Initially I was supportive of this game, but after seeing all the good ideas being provided during development thrown out for cel-shading and features that affected nothing, I'd place this at a 6/10. I mean seriously, go onto the indiedb forums and look at some of the things suggested during alpha, and tell me that implementing even one of them wouldn't have made this a better game. Hell, back in late september there was practically a whole design document posted on how to improve the game, and exactly 0 of the changes were implemented. I can't help but feel this would have been better executed by a different developer who wanted to make more than just a "randomly-generated shoot the dudes" game.

      All the work in the world doesn't make it worth the value or a good game, that seems like a stupid argument in every sense of the word. When so little work went into the actual gameplay too I'd say that any other game had more going for it in terms of design.
      Sure Sonic '06 may have taken longer to design but that doesn't make it a better game than FTL does it? Nor does it warrant the right to charge a ridiculous amount for a game not worth it.

    If not for profits sake, this game would have not gone this far and stayed in alpha. It has no potential:
    1. strategic enemy placement is none existant
    2. Immersive tutorial area none existant
    3. Graphics are decent, could be fixed with some dedication to changing the textures
    4. city design overall is just a walking simulaor
    5. Shop design is only practical but kill the immersion by not even having furtanture or decorative items
    6. Combat looks like point and click, has projectiles but not really a challenge.

      As far as I know, the problem was that the reviewer kinda forgot to use the "Run" key to move faster, and then complained about the movement being slow. He said there's nothing to do, but he never read the game guide on how to do quests. Although I do admit the area did not seem as populated as one would expect from an "action" RPG if you take games like Torchlight 2 into account, but I'm hoping that will be subject to improvement.

      Mr0life Although I do admit it's not the most aesthetically pleasing, it's not bad from a single developer - at least it's not YET ANOTHER RETRO 2D PLATFORMURRRRRRR because you can write one of those in 2 days, I'm not even joking. If he could somehow increase the quality of the textures, this game would look a lot better - but as it stands, it's still a 3D game made by one person, and for that, it's actually quite decent.
      As for the Atari Jaguar, fun fact - 'Nidhogg' came out on Steam 2 days ago, and people are actually defending it's graphics for being in Atari-style, and even bothered to compare it against 3089 and claim how much better it is for it to have an even older retro style for the feel. It's a shame the thread got locked, because it's just sad how it reeked of ignorance.
