    Always enjoyable watching your videos Maarten. Thanks for putting in the time and effort. You are so right about the menus. I use GFX 100s, and though not the worst of the issues, the WB and ISO being so low in the menu were subconscious annoyances. You've now moved to the conscious and if I ever do a long term review of the camera, I will make sure to point it out. Thanks again, and enjoy the fall season.

    Just one mention about movies: the X-S20 is excelllent for it (6.2k without crop, and 4k 10-bit 4:2:2 oversamples without crop too), and much less expensive than the X-T5 (which only have 4k oversampled with a crop, as the X-T50) and the X-H2 models.

    With the new kit lens practically the same price as the 100 VI, it's nice that Fuji is presenting a reasonable, attractive and versatile camera in this range, not just the 100 VI hype box. Even with large hands, the XT 50 is comfortable to hold, clearly better than the XT 5, but with lenses it's not quite as easy to grip as the XS 20 (almost the same performance, but much cheaper and with the flexible display much better for video, unfortunately without weather protection). Full format is still full format, on days when we mainly take photos, we go with the Sony 7 AC II, visually very attractive either, with the small light new Sony 24 2.0 or the 20-70 mm, if a lot of videos are recorded, we take the XT 50 on the left and the Sony 6700 on the right. Apart from the design, no other manufacturer can hold its own in terms of film simulations, but fortunately you don't have to resort to the completely overpriced 100 VI.

    The X-T# cameras are Fujifilm’s general purpose professional cameras. Starting with the X-T1, it has been their practice to release a “junior” version of each of these cameras. They denote these by adding a 0 to the name. So, these are the X-T10, X-T20… on up to the X-T50. I think they skipped the X-T40. These cameras usually have all the same technology of the bigger brother, but our smaller, lighter and cheaper. If you want a good used camera, i’ve heard that the X-T20 was particularly good and can be found at a good price, used. If you want a really good video camera, the X-T50 is a much better choice than the new X100VI.

      And the X-S20 has the new 5 processor, an excellent Hand Grip, larger battery, and, at this level, the PSAM dial and small footprint. The bonus - less money than the X-T50. And ... 26 mp is what the XT-4 & 3 have used to make millions of great photos over the last 7 years. I would choose X-S20 or jump to the X-T5

    • @grandpascuba
      @grandpascuba 2 місяці тому

      @@dsego84 The X-T50 is more up to date, with the 40MP sensor, the new faster processor, a 7 axis IBIS. As far as I can see, the only advantage the X-S20 has is the flippy screen.

    Nice video, thank you. I recently bought the XT-50 and I’m still in the process of setting it up to suit me. So far, I dislike the number of customisable buttons and dials so I’ve switched off as many as I can. I don’t see the point of My Menu when the Q menu fulfills that need better. As you say, the menu organisation leaves a lot to be desired. The app is several generations behind the Leica app and Fuji would do well to try to raise their game there. That said, it’s a nice camera and I’m happy with my decision to buy it.

    I liked the d-pad and drive dial on the x-t20, and for the x-t50, they could have just added an extra marking on the dial for film simulation, controlled by the d-pad to scroll through the different simulations. On the x-t20, i customised alot of things to the d-pad, so i was just wondering what you do on the x-t50 with no d-pad? Can you customise things to the joystick instead? I also used the top fn button to control the drive dial advanced filters, etc, so can you still do that in the x-t50? Hope you understand what i mean!

      I loved my x-t30 also, but got annoyed with some shortcomings, mostly wanted the IBIS, then got myself an x100vi... and it's just too much I think, I learned that I don't really want the optical viewfinder or the leaf shutter... the built in ND can be useful, but I could live without it. The extra resolution is a burden, larger files, I opted to shoot heif only just to manage it easier, but I might even select a lower resolution setting because it adds up. I recently sent some photos to a local photo contest and they asked for 40cm 300dpi and I had to downscale my images by quite a bit, 40mp is just overkill for this type of camera, I don't like that they crammed it into the x-t50 as well, this also made it more expensive.

      It depends on the external temperature, but I suspect it's about the same. If this is an issue for you, consider a Fujifilm model that has an optional cooling fan, like the X-H2S or X-T5

    Thank you Maarten for this review. Besides being a review, I find you showing me how to access features very helpful.
    The XT50 is a smaller and lighter version of the XT5. I am not a fan of the 40MP sensor. For me, the 26MP sensor was more than enough. I don’t crop my images. I don’t like the large size files. YMMV.
    I am not a fan of the film simulations dial. I’d like a firmware update to add more choice on how to use the dial.
    A Fuji request. You offer a film simulations bracket function. You choice between three choices. Can you give us the option of selecting only two film simulations? For me, three choices is too much.

    Thanks Maarten, as always it is a beautiful video. This film simulation dial is what bothers me, I understand many like those simulations but to me this is a useless gimmick. First because only the Astia changes the skin colours from typically Fuji red to gold-ish, while other simulation changes are mostly superficial, but the most important thing about those so called simulations is their linearity, which is the absolute opposite to how a real film work. In audio world analog simulations are much, much closer to their analog cousins as they are almost identical, but in photography we still do not have non-linearity.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  2 місяці тому +1

      If you have a look at the variations using a colour chart and review with histogram and vectorscope, you'll see that there are more differences that you might see unaided. I this video, I demonstrate using the X-S10. ua-cam.com/video/OL1XuYrY7h8/v-deo.html

    • @BojanBojovic
      @BojanBojovic 2 місяці тому

      @@MaartenHeilbron Thanks, I watched this back when you released it. 🙂 Putting those differences aside, it is still only linear change in one axis, it is basically a colour and gamma preset that applies to your raw data. Film is not linear as it changes its properties depending on different conditions, so when you over-expose it the film changes its curves in more than one axis, the blacks, mids, and highlights gamma and colour moves differently. With digital this does not happen.
      In audio this is very well done by adding harmonic distortion, but it is not linear and static as the input signal determines not only the amount of the second and third order harmonics, but also their relative levels as well, and also the compression of the main signal.
      In photography this would mean that when you approach the highlights clip the simulation would bend the curve differently for the entire range to simulate how the film works and it will then be a real, non-linear simulation. What they have now is only a static preset slapped onto every capture no matter the conditions, and this is my problem with it as it does not really simulate how the film works.

    IMO the current price of the XT50 is too expensive and too bloated to be a 2nd tier camera, and Fuji needs to treat its customers right. It seems to be the accountant and marketing got too much involvement in current line ups. Firstly, the price of XT50 is only about 20% less than the XT5, and including the newer kit lens is probably about 15% less! Any sane person like myself will choose the XT5 for its much more refined shutter, buttons and dials; WR; dual card; bigger and more solid body; better flip screen and so on. They should’ve left out the IBIS, kept the weight under 400g and old kit lens, and price it under US$1000 (or around $1200 with the old kit lens) The XM5 is in the right direction though.
    The other thing about auto focus is, when Sony was the only company with awesome AF, I can live with Fuji’s shortcomings. But when other manufacturers caught up and Fuji hasn’t? That’s a no no. With many things in life, loyalty only goes so far, and if the company doesn’t treat their customers right, they will leave! I don’t want Fuji to go down like the M34 cameras, so stop letting the accountants and marketing get in the way of quality products. And about the sensor shortages? I’m pretty sure it’s a marketing thing, because when no other manufacturer faces this problem in late 2024, Fuji shouldn’t! Common Fuji! You’re better than this!
