This is definitely the worse. They're not taking chances by not making a PR reboot series that starts off with a non-themed PR team (something like Goranger, but original). PR isn't about one theme, but many themes.

You'd think Hasbro would know better given they did this in the past with Transformers G2. Where they repacked the 80s show in the 90s thinking it would sell. It didn't, and it bombed. Putting Transformers on ice until they tossed it over to Kenner to be their problem and that's how we got Beast Wars. Which saved the brand because it did something new. In fact this MMPR reboot is just the MMPR 2010 show with extra steps. I honestly would have tolerated an MMPR reboot so long as it did something new and different to justify doing a reboot. Hell I even started brain storming ideas on how I would reboot MMPR. Even doing ideas that comic never did.
Master Vile as the main villain with Rita and Rito as his generals. Zordon part way through being free from the tube and being the white ranger, now based on Titanus, and Tommy being more an anti-hero who follows his own code of justice. Also changing the designs of the rangers and zords because I'm tired of the Zyuranger look constantly being used.
But the fact that they're just gonna redo a couple of episodes from the original show with the same 90s tone but with a new coat of paint is just an awful idea. It's like the live action Disney remakes. Except they don't have the justification of being in a brand new medium.

I make it no secret that I'm not a fan of the idea of the franchise succumbing to Green Hill Zone syndrome. But I still understand because next to just staying the course and doing more Sentai adaptation, doing Mighty Morphin with a new coat of paint is realisticly speaking; the safer option. Though the idea of just doing retellings of the old episodes just with a new coat a paint makes it sound like they're giving the show the FMA Brotherhood/Sailor Moon Crystal treatment. Like you, I hope that they they actually the show to feel modern. As in, actually making the characters feel like actual characters instead of plesantville mannequins that've been yoinked out of 1993 into the modern age. Otherwise it'd just be no different than that weird 2010 recut version.

I’m in the position of not wanting an MMPR reboot, at least in live-action form. If it is animated and in the same universe as the comics, that would be fine. It would give the comic writers more to do if they wished and the actors would only have to voice act if that is what they wish.

the persistence of having this tone and the fixation on the young demographic is probably because at PR's height of its success, those elements were present, whereas the seasons with good writing, good actors etc. were seasons that didn't necessarily sell well, hence to the execs, it would make sense to just stick to what made the earlier series successful. As stupid as Hasbro's plans are, I do wanna note that if they're serious about a similar tone to Once & Always, that would still make it more mature than Season 1.
Also, this implicitly confirms that Toei is still blocking any animated adaptation, because if Hasbro COULD go that route, they very, very much would have.

I honestly have a feeling someone would one day make an animated show inspired by power rangers/super sentai, bit NOT in the tone of the show yet NOT too grim and dark like loser ranger is, and then people would point to said show as 'a much more mature version of PR' or even 'a successor that surpassed PR in terms or audience ages and what it can do with animation'.

  • @FireFury190
    @FireFury190 Місяць тому +4

This is by far the worst thing they can do. This isn't even being safe. It's being soulless and not knowing what's appealing about the brand. Like you said if they really wanted to just play it safe they should have just stuck with adapting Sentai. I don't mind PR going original, but if it's not gonna be at a higher quality than the main show's production to appeal to a wider audience then what's the point?
Hasbro has been stuck appealing to nostalgia not just with Power Rangers but all their other brands too. Transformers and G.I. Joe. Transformers' best selling stuff are the Generations toys that are based off nostalgia from past shows. Not the current stuff. Meanwhile G.I. Joe is solely living off of nostalgia. The problem with banking on nostalgia is that it won't last forever. Those older audiences you're selling to are eventually gonna stop buying your stuff to focus on more important things. Then you've got the problem of what was popular in the past won't be popular with this generation. Kids aren't gonna be interested in the same 90s tone that us kids used to love because that's no longer appealing.

They should have done billy going to space and seeing the teams out there Space rangers, Galaxy rangers, Hyperforce rangers, Aquarar rangers. I would like to see a lightspeed ranger as an astronaut to help them. Then they find new powers on a planet or they find the zeo crystal planet from the comics. Which could grant them " not zeo" but new powers. Billy becomes a mentor or another former ranger to help lead the team. They could have even had the phantom ranger or blue senturion show up in even a small way.
They really have so much potential but they just waste it.
I 100 percent agree an animated season would be the best. They could do soooo much action and lore than they can do in live action.

I don't think that a reboot is a bad idea, but I'm curious to know why this potential idea is safer than the plans they originally had. I like the idea of having a show more tuned to a younger audience, but also having a show or series aimed for an older audience. I'm sure toy sales drive a lot of this, but I think a more "collector" based toy line from the more "mature" show would still do fine. I enjoy collecting the toys and having them as display pieces. I'm sure I'm part of a more niche crowd, but at least it would help spread a wider net audience. I still would've liked to see what the PR team could've came up with for an original idea and try it anyway.

The reboot plans were cancelled, Hasbro is not doing anymore sentai adaptations, they ultimately sold the toy rights to PlayMates, the lightning collection has been finished, Cosmic Fury received tons of hate and criticism…
All these situations prove the same thing DC’s been doing with Batman. Same applies to MMPR when it comes to the toys and possibly the shows. Regarding the toys, they relied TOO MUCH on MMPR these last few years, NO ONE IS GONNA BUY OTHER PR toys unless MMPR is the main focus. Also for the last few years, we got projects based around the world of MMPR when it comes to the franchise. Look, I love MMPR, cause they started the entire era, but THERE’S more to PR than JUST MMPR. Especially JDF gone. RIP. LOOK at Super Sentai guys. And I'm sorry but Power Rangers going the same route as other brands of just rebooting the same team over and over again isn't gonna work at all. The brand has already set a precedent that there can be more than one ranger team. And them having a show dedicated to them. It's already been ingrained in pop culture for the past 30 years. While a reboot of MMPR is fine, having that be the new status quo for every subsequent show isn't gonna be a good thing. Especially when you're trying to sell to kids. What worked in the past isn't gonna work with the current generation. And if kids did watch those shows in the past what's gonna make them watch the same thing again but new if nothing about it is any different?

When was the last time Dick Tracy was popular? Hell look at King Kong compared to Godzilla. Kong's movies before the monsterverse were the same story retold. Whereas Godzilla was always doing different types of stories and movies. Making him one of the most versatile characters in fiction. I've even see people say that Kong in the monsterverse is the best the character has ever been. Because they finally did something new and different with him. Not saying you can't tell stories that relive the classics, but you gotta do something different that isn't just copy and paste. You gotta bring a new angle to it.

[The CW & soap operas are proof of that] That said, as long as the stories are relevant to PR & the heroes are generally competent good people, you can add as much depth & maturity as you want. An animated show would be fine but the major problem with it is that action cartoons are very expensive to make. Moreso than what we tend to get with Power Rangers. Trying to animate a tone of fight scenes on TV show budget is a massive struggle depending on the studio you get to make it. Like if an animated Power Rangers show were to be made and the action in it is stiff and less dynamic than the shows we've had in live action it'll be mocked even more than the quality Power Rangers shows already have. Even Transformer shows tend to struggle with doing engaging action scenes. And Hasbro has been known to not really go all out even with their animated shows the further they go on. Hell Transformers Earthspark recently got a massive downgrade because they switched studios when moving to season 2. And the animation is worse than what was there in season 1. As it's being done by the same studio that made the Megamind sequel and show. And everyone has been talking about how bad those are. Even the writing. The only way I can be excited for an animated Power Rangers show is if they got the studio that made Rise of the TMNT. At least that studio would be able to capture the high octane action Power Rangers is known for and then some. But considering Hasbro doesn't want to devote that type of money into Power Rangers it's likely not gonna happen for a long time.

    What? *Why?*
Don't get me wrong, as much as all us 'real' Power Rangers fans hate it, we get it. We understand the focus on MMPR, as much as we wish they wouldn't.
But remake some season 1 episodes? What on earth is the point? The storylines weren't that amazing to begin with, and were cobbled together with what they had available to them on the budget at the time. But they're hardly noteworthy, and if you're going to be making them completely fresh and original, why use the same storylines without the necessity required due to sentai footage?
If you want to do more MMPR, fine, I guess, we get it. But make it original, FFS. An MMPR Season 4, with either the old cast or newcomes like Minh, or a mix of both, we don't care, just make it a continuation of the original with original, brand new, storylines. Or, reboot with an animated series, the same characters (use the classic actors or new actors as voice talent, we don't care), but new, original storylines that become possible thanks to the freedom of animation. Yeah, you can do Green With Evil again I guess, sure, seems it's important tot the overall storyline of the show (though even then there should be some plot-changes to it), but the monster-of-the-week episodes? Zero reason to keep them the same, even (or perhaps especially) with the translation to animation.
