Tonka Truck Rescue From The Rust Pile

  • This Tonka rescue is one of the rustier projects I have attempted! The surface rust was not as bad as some of the other toy restorations I have completed, but the parts that were rusted, were extremely rusted through! By the time it was done I had a ton of pitting and missing material to deal with! Check out the video for some sandblasting, powder coating, and some serious sheet metal repair!

As soon as the truck went back together, I was thinking BIGFOOT. Just needed the decals on the side. That blue looks lovely. Nice save with the truck bed. The bed coating looks wonderful.

For the truck bed, maybe something like a wooden bed could have been a nice choice ? (just saying, I'm no expert) =)

Kinda meh about the narrator. I'm used to you doing episodes AMSR style. Also no detailing of the interior, no one seems to paint or weather the seats/interior. Aside from that, this restoration was phenomenal!!! The truck bed solution, that blue over chrome finish was spectacular! Love it. And the chrome around the rim of the wheels. Love it! Thanks for sharing.

I got one of these trucks when I was five (birthday present). It was black with a big eagle sticker on the bonnet and flame stickers on the sides, it had a red / orange motorbike clipped in the back. My sister broke the front forks on the motorcycle and chewed the rear tyre (she was only three) and I played with it till the stickers came off and the wheels got so loose they would come off by themselves. It was finally sent to Tonka heaven courtesy of my sister after she left it in the driveway and dad backed the car over it, it was 14 years old.

I probably do not have a life - night after night watching toy trucks, furniture, cars, watches and a long list of rusty things restored and given a new life?. Sandblasting is a blast. I know how to turn a piece of firewood into a beautiful bowl. I know how to repair a Bobcat. I could take apart a Rollex. Chair with a broken leg - no problem, veneer lifting, no problem. But your Yippee! Moment is the tops. Thanks for these videos.

An opinion, a suggestion and a request:
Opinion) I've always liked Tonka, except the hard plastic tires. If it were me, I would mod them all with rubber tires, maybe with R/C tires or something similar. But that's just me, you do you.
Suggestion) Get as much rust as possible off before sandblasting. I know the transformation is all part of the experience, but you're also introducing the rust into the blast media, which is then impregnated into the parts. Another idea would be, put a strong magnet in the bottom of the cabinet to collect the iron-oxide particles.
Request) Duke, could we get a bit more info on the powder coating process?

Your choice of liner spray was inspired! Because I liked the fact that the headlights were featured; I would have liked it if you had kept the black grill color. Or maybe had blackened around where you could to give dept. All silver doesnt work well. The blue seems to have purple highlights. You did all you could for that Swiss-cheese bedbox! Maybe use thiner layers where the damage is severe, and lightly sand in between. Or use filler putty first and then the fluid metal last. Sorry, just an old moldeler thinking out loud.
Duke, glad to see you again! And that smooth voice! Keep on commenting and giving us insight!

It is so cool to see you saving the toys if yesteryear.
I can remeber playing with that truck when I was a kid.
I would add some "K.C. looking lights to the roll bar and detail the grill and headlights with a black outline.
I would only suggest taking it a step further, ad some decals or pinstripes/ scallops anything to make it unique.
Other than that 10/10 that blue looks awesome! 👍😎
