    Loved the interview. Seriously though, if these 2 squeaky clean perfect mormons can leave the church, ANYONE can.
    This gives me hope that people will continue to leave. Even the most mormon of the mormons.

      The internet has been a very helpful tool in getting knowledge in people’s hands. It’s both helping get people out of cults as well as into cults, unfortunately.

    You can see that tons of genuine Mormons go out and investigate their doctrine and history. Then they find out it's all bunk, which makes them leave, I can't imagine how difficult it is to leave the LDS when it's all you know. My hat is off to people like Tanner.

      Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 New International Version (NIV)
      5 For the living know that they will die,
      but the dead know nothing;
      they have no further reward,
      and even their name is forgotten.
      6 Their love, their hate
      and their jealousy have long since vanished;
      never again will they have a part
      in anything that happens under the sun.
      My knowldge increased when I was aware of this..my study began..

      *avayamms* If you've "grown up" Mormon, how do you get by and get this far without hearing of it? Are issues never brought up? Glazed over? A different narrative given to you as the truth? Have you not run into "anti" Mormon people that would have called your faith into question...like street preachers, those people who go to Manti to witness? Have you had no access to the internet, because obviously you're on it now. Please explain how *TRUTH* can escape you your entire life, *ESPECIALLY* that you've "grown up" a Mormon. Thx.

And if you happen to read about some of these things on a limited scale, they wouldn't faze you much. I read "anti-mormon" material accidentally when I was pre-teen and it didn't mean much to me at the time. My mission president was all about numbers as well. Not just for baptisms, but of the missionaries as well. They encouraged us to go out even if we were sick. The day that I found out my grandma had passed, I was in the house crying (p-day) and the assistants called because they had found out and instead of trying to comfort, they told me that my president and God would want me to go out and work anyways. As a convert of only about a year and a half at the time, I remember thinking, “this is all I was that whole time?” It was like peeling back the curtain in the wizard of oz. I never felt less cared about in my life than as a missionary.

Some of the pretentious members presumed that all new members had a sordid disgusting lifetsyle. I had no addictions at all. Except that I enjoyed drinking coffee and a can of Pepsi now and then. You kids and your internet. When I was young and curious, I had to make up my own anti Mormon doctrine. And if you wanted to get excommunicated, there was no namby pamby silliness like with John Dehlin. You had to have unmarried sex, or kill somebody. When I was a Priest, if you stuttered while blessing the sacrament, you started over from the very beginning and not just from the last sentence. I once witnessed a fellow Priest have a nervous breakdown after the sixth time starting over on the prayer. You kids today don't know how good you got it.

      +Dan Hildreth Nope We do not baptize dead people it's all lie what gave you that idea? Joseph Smith only has one wife and was sealed to her only! These are all fabrications, your point of Jesus and Satan being brothers is crazy talk we LDS do not teach this nor believe it! That would be anti Christ talk!

    • @marenjenson6755
      @marenjenson6755 7 років тому

      Dan when I was a member of the church, they always made the priests start over even if they stuttered.

    • @filminginportland1654
      @filminginportland1654 7 років тому

      Maren Jenson Me too, I remember this clearly. We were told it was too important to mess up, as it had to be perfect. And one of the priests had a stuttering problem. For some reason, they thought it was a good idea to have him bless the sacrament often. Then again, there were only a few young men 12-18 in that branch.
      I swear, people don't realize that this brand of "attaining perfection" does indeed cause massive mental health problems and actual nervous breakdowns for people. As it's impossible to be perfect, but the bar is so high that for some, it causes very real problems when they can't attain it.
      And often it's over ridiculous stuff that shouldn't matter, not actual sins. Other times, it's over things you cannot choose, like with LGBT people. For them, often, leaving the church becomes the only viable option when it comes to mental health. Moreso for trans people than gay, but it still applies nonetheless, as even being celibate, you're an outsider. You're not like everyone else, and constantly struggle with just wanting to live your life.
      The struggle is very real, and rarely discussed *within* the culture. It's always "pray and have faith," "follow the commandments," etc but none of that will fix many of these issues. Issues that shouldn't even be issues.

I mean, the guy by his own admission was *BATHED* in Mormon teachings his entire upbringing, yet these things didn't come to light till he was in *COLLEGE* ? Especially in the age in which we live w/technology. Do most Mormons take what is spoon fed to them as the sole truth and they never even desire to learn things independently?

      It was a lot more hidden in the nineties. When the internet became better and more widespread, the church was forced to open up and make a lot of excuses as all their dirty laundry suddenly caught up. Plus, that's not exactly the kind of thing people like to talk about. In seminary they teach you to seek truth from "divine sources" -- if it's antimormon its untruthful and motivated by SATAN, so he probably didn't feel comfortable looking at outside sources.

    My testimony part two
    I began searching for a Church which taught we are saved by Christ's grace through faith and where saving faith is a verb not a noun nor a one time event. I continued reading and studying my scriptures. In John the Bible proclaims " in the beginning was the word" ; the Bible also testifies " there is one Lord, one faith, and one baptism, " . All of these Christian Churches teaching opposing interpretations could not all be correct nor true. It is a factual impossibility . Christ said " I am the way, the truth , and the life" .
    I was 28 and working as a salesman. I visited hundreds of homes biweekly selling food. A few of the families began to stand out to me. They demonstrated the fruits of righteousness, of following Christ. No drinking alcohol, no smoking, purity until marriage, education was stressed ,no cussing nor inappropriate movies , keeping the Lord's day Holy, tithing, strong families built on love and Christ's teachings. Finally, I asked each family ,one after the other what there secret was? Each of them were Mormon families.
    Impossible, I thought ! I was taught by Catholics and Baptists the Mormon Church was a cult ! How could a cult demonstrate the fruits of righteousness? It didn't make sense. I like to study religions so asked how I could learn more about there faith and Church? They were excited to say the least. They set me up with a couple of their Missionaries . In our first meeting they taught me about Joseph Smith and his first vision where he saw Jesus Christ standing on the right hand of His Father. Two separate personages . Jesus was in the express image of His Father as Hebrews declares. To my surprise I had no problem with what they were teaching . I felt at peace. After all Stephan ,when he was being stoned ,looked up and saw Jesus standing on the right hand of the power on high. Moses spoke to the Lord face to face as a man speaks to a friend. Jesus said he would be on the right hand of the Father in eternity. The Bible declares God is the same yesterday, today, and forever and God is not the author of confusion. This vision was brought about by Joseph Smith reading in the Bible from James 1 vs 5 " if any of you lack wisdom let him ask of God who giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not but let him ask in faith and it shall be given him." Ask God directly, having faith in Christ , amazing!
    God keeps His promises!! Right!
    Then it happened . The Elders said they were glad I was soaking up what they were teaching but I needed to gain a Spirit born testimony . Simply deciding the LDS Church was true was not enough . They showed me in the back of the Book of Mormon a similar promise from God as was-in James. It said to study the Book of Mormon and then ask Heavenly Father , having faith in Christ , with real intent , if the words of the book are true and through the power of the Holy Spirit I would know it was true directly from God. They said I could know the truth of all things through the Holy Spirit. The Bible proclaims this and so does the Book of Mormon. I could know all of the Churches teachings were true using God's system.
    I had never been taught in the Catholic nor the Baptist Churches I could take their interpretations directly to God and through the power of the Holy Ghost I would know they were true. In fact I was taught an objective process instead of a subjective process.
    I was determined to place my faith directly in Heavenly Father , having faith in Christ. I was about half way through the Book of Mormon when God answered my sincere prayers. I had been fasting and praying with real intent . All of the sudden my soul was filled with the most divine feeling of God's love and God did brand His truth on my heart. God's presence poured down upon me and was within me. As Jeremiah described ,the word of the God was as fire in my bones. I knew the Book of Mormon was true . I knew Joseph Smith was a Prophet . I knew the LDS Church was true. As sure as Moses's experience with the burning bush and the great I AM . I knew and will always know. The Holy Ghost testified to me with power and love.
    I have since come across another scripture in the Bible commanding us to go directly to God for our testimonies.
    Isaiah 8 vs 19-20
    Should not a people go to their God ? For the living to the dead ? To the law and the testimony ?
    If they teach not this it is because there is no light in them.
    Brothers and sisters I testify to you " the LDS Church is true, the Book of Mormon is God's word as is the Bible; as long as it is interpreted correctly, Joseph Smith was a Prophet called of God and Christ Church is led by a Prophet today, I testify marriage can be forever as families can be forever, procreation can be forever. God did not command you get married and be fruitful and multiply to take this most wonderful blessing from you at death. God hates divorce . Why would He divorce everyone?
    I testify Heavenly Father lives and loves you ! Jesus is the Christ! He lives and loves you ! They promise to answer your sincere prayer . "Saved by grace through faith " I leave my testimony with you in the name of Jesus Christ ! Amen
    The Wilder family and most of the other x Mormon's simply never had the humility nor faith to gain a Spirit born testimony of the LDS Church nor of the Book of Mormon. They , like many other Mormon's who grow up in the LDS Church ,assume they have a Spirit born testimony without ever fasting and praying and gaining one. They never really understood Christ's atonement and continue not to understand it to this day. "We are saved by Christ's grace through faith" .
    We do our best to keep God's commandments all of the time and draw closer to Him through our obedience and Christ saves us all the while as we seek to live after the Spirit and not the flesh. Christ did not suffer so horribly to change God's commandments into mere nice ideas we can pick and choose from. Our relationship with Christ has everything to do with what we do for Him and what He does for us as we walk hand in hand. God's commandments are His plan for our happiness . Fast and pray and you can know this is true through the Spirit of truth. You can know the truth of all things through His Spirit of truth. The Spirit testifies with love and power. You will know , not merely believe. Love y'all !!!

    What I want to know is where you find God after you leave the false doctrine (cult)? There are many fine things about being Mormon... Christian churches don't have the family emphasis, activities, outreach to the needy, political activism, aggressive teaching of the Bible, etc. So how do ex-Mormons fill the void?

      Dawn Katz That. is an EXCELLENT question.. I haven't been in the LDS church for years.. And I had MANY friends that weren't Mormon. But some people I know who have left, literally sit at home sad on Sundays missing their culture, even if they don't miss their religion.

      There are good Christian churches but you have to find the right church for you. Some are too big and it's harder to connect. Some are too small and you'll find there are some people who don't want to connect and just want to be fed the word then get out. One would have to "shop" churches to find a home where they can find that connection.
      I think a person's nature is to be loved and connection is a huge part of that. The LDS church is notorious for that and it is a beautiful thing but as good as that is, a false gospel doesn't get you to God in heaven for eternity.
      I've heard some people are never near other people and when they go to church, they get a hug from a brother or sister and that's the only connection they get. It's a sad but true fact. We try our best to focus on groups meeting together to do life together, families with children so they grow knowing who their savior Jesus Christ truly is, youth activities so kids can bond & learn to trust each other and any other kinds of connection. I'm personally meeting with the guys (mostly from church) at a gun range to connect and in two weeks grilling with families from church. That's my family.
      I have my family, my church family and work family. I, like our church, focus on that connection. That love for one another as commanded. Which is not hard to do when you are filled with The Holy Spirit.
