Wow! I had no idea of the potential!! :o I always thought I might get a few bucks extra if I turned on more ads, but I didn't think it was worth it... But thanks to this video, I just turned on a whole lot of ads. I have a weird internal struggle of thinking society will only accept my hobby if I do it for free...I'm not sure why I tend to think that, but I think I have a long way to go with personal development! I have been sooo much more productive since I’ve found your channel last week! Like seriously, your 15 min timer trick was like wow. I literally used to just let laundry sit on my favorite chair for up to a week cause I would just put it off and for the passed week I have been getting it done 15 mins here, 15 mins there, etc. your tips are so easy to implement.
Not to mention you have encouraged me to really put in effort for my art channel. I got 4 videos up this weekend. And have pre filmed for the next two weeks. I have a whole new mindset! You rock

I'm going through exactly what you went through back then! Really picking up Gillian's tips and putting them to good use. I'm leaving my job due to family commitments in a couple of months, and decided to focus on UA-cam once I'm spending more time at home, so all these tips are really helping me to prepare for it!

It's a long game! Focus on consistency. Most channels create consistent, good quality content at least once/week for 6+ months before they even start to see growth.

All UA-camrs! Be cautious to SAVE because there are no TAXES withheld.
Good of you to mention! It seems most people don't consider that taxes aren't taken out of your checks like regular jobs with many online money opportunities, an but you still have to pay them. That also means you don't make quite as much either, making your employer pays portions you are also now responsible for, so a $13/hr job at a company where your considered an employee instead of an independent contractor, pays more than a $13/hr job as an indie contactor or self employed.

Quarterly payments? It depends on the amount that you owed on the due date last year's taxes.
There is an "underestimated tax penalty" but it essentially amounts to paying the interest they could have earned had you paid timely (every quarter rather than just at the end of the year).
If you make less than 10,000/yr from UA-cam the penalty is nothing to worry about -- it is small compared to the actual tax amount.(penalty is around 5% of the tax amount)
It's just tough to get hit with the tax bill (regardless of penalty) at the end of the year not even knowing it would be taxed (so you could save for it) - that is the important reason for this reminder.
Beanie Green Actually it’s the opposite. You can actually get paid more as a independent contractor in the long term. In your example you’ll be getting paid the exact same, the only difference is as a independent contractor you’ll be taking the taxes out yourself but you can get paid more in the long term because you can do business write offs and get money back.

This was so helpful, Gillian. I've watched other videos on the subject but you've given the kind of information we can really use to help monetize our videos. Though my channel started as a beauty and lifestyle one, it is morphing into something else entirely. You've given me some great ideas of ways to branch out. I am at the moment a tiny channel with about 1250 subscribers but want to grow it.
