The only reason you and everyone else survived the whole ShB experience is because of Emet Selch! Without him. Y'shtola would be dead (and you would not even realize that Elidibus is a Primal), The Crystal Exarch would be dead after absorbing all you Aether, the Scion will get sent home but may or may not make it in one piece, you will have no help in reaching the Crystal Tower since the Scion/Exarch will be gone, without the Azem crystals, you have no chance of defeating Elidibus, even if you somehow managed to defeat him, you can't bind him since you have no control over the tower and there will not be a memory crystal to transfer the Exarch's memories to the younger G'raha. Tell me how can someone who have done all that does not have a perfect exit strategy all ready for his final curtain call, with the encore being snapping you out of the void in SOS and basically telling you that he's handing you the future but he's still there if you stray from the path.
I'm not saying Emet Selch is a saint. I'm sure he was a "evil" Ascian all set on continuing his work for the rejoining upon his return. What I'm saying is that once he meet us and saw that we have a fragment of Azem's soul and have another fragment walking beside us. He was finally open to the idea that we might be a worthy successor to their legacy and an alternative to the rejoining. He then proceed to test our worthiness all through ShB which resulted in us possessing 2 fragments of Azem's soul and the official holder of Azem's office as part of the 14. While Emet probably doesn't see all but he's basically a god compare to us with his thousands of thousands of years of experience among us, establishing the Allagan Empire and all his experience as a member of the convocation of 14. Just look at his body posture in ShB until the end of 5.0 when you "defeated" him.

I think so too. Without him we would not have survived. Not all of that. What you have written touches me, because I also think that he tested us and when he then realized who we are, what an unbelief it must have been for him. He lived so many lives. How many times has he hoped. How many times has he been disappointed. And then we are finally there, albeit hewn to pieces and not quite completely.
As I went through this scene, tears came to me. The feeling of having found something again and now this piece of home would disappear, hurt. And that's just a life that the WoL lives through. We are on a constant journey and search and there is someone who finally tells us who we once were, partially are and will be.
      Remember us
I think he doesn't mean himself and everyone else we defeated. He wants us to remember ourselves. To everyone who was there at the time. So maybe we can go back to this place of yore. If time permits.Telling a friend to please remember "us" takes everything to another level when you consider how long they live.

I personally feel that, while founded for the purpose of sowing chaos, i feel like part of the reason why he founded Garlemald is to try and make another Amaurot. Or at least feel what it’s like again. Out of all his fellow Ascians, it feels like he longs for home the most.

I can see that being true even if he himself didn't realize it. He seemed attached to his life in Garlemald. The way he prefers the body of Solus, how he remembered his son, etc.

I always felt he was the only of the unsundered ascians to be so human, for example he is the only ascian to have a form of his own, while elidibus and Lahabrea just hop around from meat suit to meat suit.

Not quite I think... he founded *Allag* to make another Amaurot. Allag was the one that was supposed to last forever, the one he taught Ancient knowledge to, the one he fought so hard, and under various masks, to preserve. Garlemald was never going to be Allag, but he taught them some of their secrets anyway. He didn't give them the knowledge of the Ancients like he'd given Allag, he gave them Allagan knowledge. Post 5.3, I don't know if he's the one that longed for home the *most*... but I think he's the one that remembered it clearest, and remembered in excruciating detail every face of those he'd loved and lost. And because of that grief, and despair, and loneliness, he was the one who reached out. He was the only one that actually attempted to *connect* with the mortals of the Source, even thought it hurt him over and over and over again to watch them fail to be what he wanted them to be. His story is so sad. My WoL is still struggling to move past his death.

@@ffxiv_chronicles It was. And yes, he could have been the main antagonist for the entire franchise and it would have been awesome, but then I am also happy they didn't make him overstay his welcome! ^^ He was perfectly written and used as it stands.

Did we really win? With every victory there seems to be a greater sacrifice. In the end, we couldn't save such characters as Minfilia, Haurchefant and Papalymo. We couldn't even save Emet-selch.

Emet-Selch the best damn MMO villain EVER! Not only is he evil (from our point of view) He also almost makes you believe he is right and that you should aid him instead of fight him :P

Almost? If there had been an option to join the Unsundered and restore the world and all its souls to their rightful, whole beings.... My WoL would have taken it. The only reason I killed him is because the narrative left me no other choice.
