I’ve just stripped the gears in my mini mill and had no idea how to get it apart. Very useful, thank you

I thank you for the video. I did not know how to take the broken plastic gear off. Now I got it.

Hi Roger I have the mini mill from harbor freight and have done some upgrades to it , like putting on the air cylinder and the longer spine for more
Travel. I also DIY’ed my own power table drive for the Y axis. I want to put the belt drive on but now after seeing your video I think I need to put in better gears. I will check with “Little machine shop” and see if they have better gears..
I have been running Mills lathes and CNC machines for 35 years.
I will check out some of your other videos.
    Bob

I read somewhere that plastic gears are better than metal gears for sound and vibration reasons. Yes they may break easier but theyre cheaper to obtain so having spares isnt a problem. Yes its a pain to be swapping gears out but some might not mind doing it. My question is and its probably a stupid question but will torque be lost using a belt? Ive read some getting faster rpm using the belt but are they losing/gaining any torque? I just think about a mazda RX7 with its Rotary belt engine spinning super fast but that car cant pull or push anything. A truck on the other hand with 4WD can pull a trailer on a dirt road because it uses gears. Is my train of thought wrong here?

Hi, thanks for the vid, I assume that is a sacrificial gear as such in case too much load is put on the mill drivetrain. The gear splits instead of metal going AWOL. some cheap lawn mowers I have repaired are similar.

The video between 10:00 and 11:18 shows that the use of the Z-limit block as the sole means of Z support is insufficient. Watch the Z handle rotate. Severe impact forces are being applied in unusual ways. At least support the spindle head with a 2x4 or some such that extends to the bed. The danger is that you will end up not trammed in the Y-axis. There's no adjustment for this on these machines.

I'm surprised the spindle doesn't have a locking pin like the 44991. Removing the spindle nut should not be as risky as shown in this video.

Hi Roger, thank you for the very helpful video.
I have removed also the large gear set that fits on the spindle as it was broken. You say it acts as a spacer block, do you think it should be replaced or it will do no harm to just reassemble the spindle without the large gear set ?
PS. If it is required maybe I could replace it with a nylon sleeve instead of buying a new set of gears just to act as a spacer ?

great stuff Roger. glad to hear you are going to get a machine manufactured up to our standards. will you just be maufacturing 6090 or have you plans to go bigger in the future. Cheers Bill

I think you should of replaced that last as well because the chance are it will break and will have to take it apart again. Thats just my opinion. Anyway hope everything works out for you Anyway.

I thought this was about the belt drive conversion?

a 1" block of wood even oak isnt thick enough to use as a buffer for hitting with a hammer.. you need a 2" block at minimum. 2" block of pine wouldve worked fine.

wouldnt it have been better with metal gear? l have belt mod, it sucks too. Like to have a real mill, old school with belts only/no motherboards, etc.. I bought the pos cheap at yard sale, it’s just a pitiful design.

    • @ChristopherJones16
      @ChristopherJones16 Рік тому

Ive been wondering what the old mills use.. Do the high end industrial mills also use belts? You said the belt mod sucks too? What sucks about it? I was debating if I should just buy a couple backup plastic gears or buy the belt mod. I feel like belts would just increase speed but not torque and that torque is better with gears. (Im thinking of it in ways how some cars are made. i.e. Mazda RX7 with its Rotary Engine that can achieve high speeds vs a pick up truck with 4WD pulling a trailer because it has better torque production utilizing gears and not belts)

Why are you leaving any plastic gears in that Chinese junker?
