Determining the quadratic equation given a vertex and a point

  • 👉 Learn how to write the equation of a parabola given three points. The equation of a parabola is of the form f(x) = ax^2 + bx + c, where a, b and c are constants. Since, the equation of a parabola has 3 constants, three equations and hence three points are needed to solve/obtain the equation of a parabola.
Given three points on a parabola, we use the standard form of a quadratic equation to set up a system of three linear equations which we solve to obtain: a, b, and c and hence, the equation of the parabola.

The problem says: Find the appropriate values of a, b, & c according to the graph. The graph only shows (-3,9). I tried to solve it by how you did and I got a=1, b=0, & c=9. The answers, however, were a=0, b=3, & c=9. I don't get how it resulted to those answers.

Thanks for helping! I always have trouble remembering lessons 1-2 weeks after they pass...not to sound ungrateful or anything, but you should try looking at the camera if you can! I felt awkward looking at the video even though you weren't right there! Thanks again!

haha totally understand. I do not look at the video in my classroom videos because I am teaching to the class but recording myself. I also make videos where I teach to the camera without any students.

Yeah, sorry. I noticed that right after I commented when a girl asked some questions! Please disregard my comment, their education is important then some minor discomfort when watching a UA-cam video. I did awesome on my Algebra test today because of you though!
