  • Greetings, Wayfarers! Today we've got a dying mall tour of Bayfair Center in San Leandro, CA for you, located near Oakland and Hayward in the East Bay near San Francisco. Originally opening in 1957, it was built on the site of the former Oakland Speedway. A BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) station opened south of the mall in 1972. We visited this mall in March of 2019, dodging some spring rainstorms while we were there.
As you'll see, the outside perimeter is packed with bustling big-box stores. However, the expansive, aging interior is the opposite--forlorn and forgotten. It twists and turns several times through empty corridors, and the 2nd floor is completely abandoned.
As the builder/longtime owner (until 2002-3) of the mall and its only remaining original anchor, Macy's continues to hang on...for now. It remains to be seen if what's left of this mid-century mall will survive much longer. Plans are in the works to transform the mall and its surrounding neighborhood into a transit-oriented village.
    As always, thanks for watching!

Used to live in bay area, and I was always perplexed as to why the mall was so dead. I only would go there to shop at Target and the movie theater, wondered how it could afford to stay open.

i've went there every other day to go to the toy shop they had there. It's closed now, I only visit it for target and the movie theaters as well.

Malls in general are dying everywhere in the US. I remember going to this one as a kid in the 90s, and it was always packed! Seeing it so empty is eerie.

The upstairs area you went to is now a haunted house attraction for the Halloween season and also for February.

This was the hang out in the 80’s with the food court in the middle with the arcade. Macy’s was full especially up and down this mall. Very sad to see this extinct. Maybe because of Amazon and internet shopping. Lots of kids would break dance in the hallways and the record shop upstairs were full of teens.

When I was a teenager 10 years ago, this place was also kind of dead. Kids would go to other towns to shop. Only stores keeping this mall alive are Macy's, Kohls, Target, and the movie theater.

Originally, it was called Bayfair Center and was an open mall. They had an Orange Julius stand in the middle of the pathway. From the E. 14th street entrance, it had tall poles with lettering in marqui that spelled Bayfair with striped balls on top. The mall was surrounded by vintage things of the past. There was once a drive in theater where the the parking lot is on the right, facing Macy's. Also, there was a Red Barn and Pioneer Chicken fast food chains adjacent to the E 14th street entrance. There used to be Bayfair Lanes bowling across from Montgomery Wards in the back. On the left of the E. 14th street view was a Kodak drive up kiosk and further left was the skating rink. Macy's was 3 levels and MW was 2. Next to the MW mall entrance was a Dreyer Ice Cream Parlor. There used to be an escalator where you were overlooking the kid play area on the 2nd level. There used to be many shops there and a corridor aligned with shops between the entrances of the two anchors on the 2nd level. A piano store was next to the MW entrance, the cul-de-sac in the center had a fragrance store and a jeans store. The Security office used to be a Hot Topic and next to it used to be the Diamond Center. The empty white store in the beginning of the footage used to be a See's Candies.

thank you for giving me a insight on how this mall was. May i ask what year are you specifially describing? I am 13 years old and the only shops I remember is that one jewelry place, the toys and more store, the other toy store (they both closed since then) the furniture store and the food court. (The subway is dead there now) I also remember macys and the place with the plastic tree. I always wondered why the mall was so empty.

@@monkeykonggaming I lived in the Bay Area all my life. Specifically, I was referring to the late 60's, 70's, and the 80's. No specific year. I just remember all the changes and things that came and went. I used to go there as a kid, and go to the arcade, at that time, it had pinball machines, and the arcade was on the second floor, center near Macy's. I would often ride my bike and stop at the Red Barn that was in the parking lot, but not connected to the mall. The declined due to the riff raff that started moving into San Leandro. There was a shootout there, a few robberies, carjackings, etc, all which contributed to its decline. Further contributing to it was the lack of major anchors. As other malls had J.C. Penny, Capwell's, Liberty House, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, ....Bayfair was missing alluring shopping anchors.

It’s been about 10 years since I left the Bay Area, and even then, I always though bayfair mall was a dead mall, it was always empty, with lots of unused store spaces.

Lived in San Leandro from 1978 to 1997.
Hard to see the mall now.
When we lived there it was a GREAT place to shop.
Had a Montgomery Wards, Alpha Beta, a great computer store, good food court and any kind of store you wanted.
Went back there in 2005 when we were in the area and couldn't believe the change.
Looked like 75% of the mall was boarded up stores and not suprisingly, there were no shoppers.
    SAD!

I used to love Alpha Beta. Never knew that they had one in the mall, but I only started going to the mall in the mid 90s.

Weird watching y'all explore somewhere I've known my entire life and have seen slowy decay into something vaguely uncomfortable for me. Pretty cool tho. Kinda weird one of my city's landmarks is a dead mall, lol. It was interesting seeing your guys's pov with the context of this being an unexplored place. Also never would of associated this location with this music but it was kinda funny. Good stuff though. Thanks for visiting

Use to shop here in the early 80-90's; now just a ghost mall. Covid, "Wilding", smash and grabs....has wreaked havoc on this mall. This is the aftermath of Amazon and heavy online presence affecting over 70% of all malls in America.

In the 1990s I'm surprised that Bayfair Mall Did Not close Down in the 1990s in 1999 when I was working Mall security there on one day I hardly saw any customers come in this was in July on that same day you had a lot more people at Southland Mall and at Stoneridge Mall

Don't let STT security scare you OFF Anything that's open to the public you have the right to film remember Do Not let Mall security scare you off even though that Mall management will have stuff when you come in on a stand like Mall rules it pretty much will say no pictures no videos but once again I'm just letting you know what some security guards might do or say
