@MusicLuver093 Because Michelle won the short program and Sarah Hughes was fourth in the short. If the judges had placed Michelle above Irina, Michelle would have won the gold medal. That's were this result is controversial, not whether Sarah Hughes deserved to win the long program, which she clearly did.
9 nights out of 10 both Slutskaya and Kwan would beat Sarah Hughes (and Cohen for that matter). Unfortunately for them the only scores that count are the scores for that meet, and the long program a lot more than the short. These two both seemed to fall apart in the long programs in the Olympics, Slutskaya in 2002 and 2006, Kwan in 2002 and to a certain extent in 1998. 1998 was a much closer call as to who deserved the medal, but there's no doubt here that Kwan got outskated.
Michelle stayed in and won her 5th World title and 3 more national titles thereby becoming the most decorated American Figure Skater of all time! That’s all due to her not Winning an Olympic Medal. Many would have given up.

And we were told to try and stay away from the area so that those who were visiting could have more room!
Here is an explanation of why Michelle Kwan had to get third in the free program for Sarah Hughes to win the gold. Every skater in the free program got a point for their position. First got 1. Second got 2. Third got 3. Every skater in the short program got half a point for their position. First got .5. Second got 1. Third got 1.5. Fourth got 2. Hughes 2+1=3 (4th in short, 1st in free) Slutskaya 1+2=3 (2nd in short, 2nd in free) Kwan .5+3=3.5 (1st in short, 3rd in free) Cohen 1.5+4=5.5 (3rd in short, 4th in free) If Kwan is second in the free program, she ends up with 2.5 and wins the gold. This was also the last Olympics to use this scoring for the skating. I suspect it was changed because of this fiasco with the pairs figure skating.
Sarah Hughes likely had the greatest skate in the history of Olympic figure skating. She raised the bar on triples. Actually, Hughes is responsible for pushing figure skating to more athletic standards. Since then, skaters are pushing for more triples...even quads. No wonder they put Sarah on a box of Wheaties.
You got to hand it to Sarah for not retiring right away and competing the next year and coming in 2nd at Nationals and 6th at World...Michelle Kwan won both. I wonder if it made matters worse/bitter sweet that despite not winning Olympic Gold she did hear the National Anthem on the Podium...twice!!!!!!
thank you! everyone seems to forget he fell in SP and didnt even attempt second part of combination...yes he pushed the sport, but in SLC he was held up.
Michelle is better than Sarah in the history. I do love Michelle, and she totally deserved the Olympics gold, but she fell unfortunately. When ppl thinks figure skating, iconic Michelle Kwan will always basically be the first skater that comes to mind. And she didn't win Olympic gold. Now with the way you put it, if it WEREN'T for Olympic gold, Sarah would basically be unknown. Tara would only be known for her young age and perhaps 97 Worlds. Michelle is a historical figure when it comes to skating, even without Olympic Gold. Ask any pros in the area of skating about the greatest skaters, and I guarantee michelle will pop up.
Oh my gosh, all of u raving about Michelle Kwan. This video is all about Sarah so give it up. Let’s show facts if Michelle was better than Sarah than explain why is she in 3rd place. You guys reach for air hot air that is lmao
I'm sorry, loco, but Michelle Kwan didn't choke either. She was quite happy with her placements. Sarah did her best job and so did Irina before she started to have problems. The only people who choked were her 'critic's posted in this forum. If one were to choke then, she would have cried her way out of figure skating. and yes, Sasha didn't choke either, even if she was disappointed.
--- > I thought Michelle Kwan had the best long program. Sarah Hughes was really good but Michelle topped her in artistry and both of the other winners in innovation.. She was definitely better than Slutskaya.
Really sad Michelle didn't win, if she hadn't had fallen, she would have won. :( Still love her, most decorated figure skater in United States history!!!
Michelle Kwan was the best skater the US ever produced, winning gold in several US national competitions and winning the gold medal at 5 world competitions. My heart broke for her not being able win the one she really wanted, and it always alluded her, the Olympic Gold medal. She was upstaged twice by a relatively unknown up and coming young US skater who disappeared after winning their olympic gold medals. Michelle would try once more at the 2006 Olympic games only to be injured in a practice run there, leading to her withdrawal from the games.
Linda Sturm why couldn’t Tara and Sarah quit skating after they won gold at the Olympics? It’s been a hard journey for all skaters, and not only for Michelle. Once they reached their dream, they wanted to do something else like other normal people do; so what? It’s their life, their time, their future. Why are you so sore about?
smurfiennes blue I have nothing against Tara and Sarah or their choice to leave competitive world of skating after winning the gold at the Olympic games. Most athletes do move on especially in figure skating because they can make more money being a professional figure skater. I was only expressing how bad I felt for Michelle who tried so hard to win an Olympic gold medal because a silver and bronze was NEVER GOING TO BE ENOUGH IN HER OPINION. It didn't matter to her that she was the most decorated female in figure skating history, being a 9 time U.S. National Champion and the World champion 5 times, she was never satisfied with herself for not winning an Olympic Gold medal. She should be very proud of herself and all she accomplished in her figure skating career.
I remember this quite well myself and for the benefit, convenience and information of you and others who view this and to refresh your memory, the words of our national anthem were written by Francis Scott Key in the aftermath of the British attack on Baltimore's Fort McHenry during the War of 1812 when he saw the American flag still waving over the fort that morning and below are Mr. Key's words if you want to look them over while listening or sing along as you stand with your hand over your heart. The anthem begins at the 5:39 mark. O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light, what so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming, whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, o'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
5 time WORLD CHAMPION!!! 2 OLYMPIC MEDALS! 9 US CHAMPIONSHIPS! Enough said. The World Championships is equal the Olympics in presence and talent. Michelle beat everyone on the podium during both Olympic Games she competed! Despite not winning an Olympic gold medal, she's one of the best EVER!!!
stpark22 Thank you. At least someone makes a little sense. Michelle is no flash in the pan kind of skater. She has worked her butt off and not been rewarded properly. Two golds within her reach and this last one was the strangest one that got away.
stpark22 you must be watching different versions of Olympics 😂 Tara was amazing in 1998, and so was Sarah in 2002. Michelle, not good enough at both times. Nobody cares or is talking about one’s medals in Worlds or Nationals, when they watch Olympics.
Michelle Kwan handled her defeat very gracefully. She was sad (who wouldn't be after working towards gold for four years?), but she didn't let that ruin Sarah's day. What a sport. Michelle is a great skater, and she will be remembered as one of the best. Sarah, however, deserved the gold that night--not Michelle. The Olympics makes one life-long dream come true just when it shatters another. It's a bit sad, yes... but that's just the way it is. There can only be one winner.
Michelle felt she didn't need a coach. She played it safe and didn't attack . You could tell. She has nobody to blame but herself . Not a fan of Sarah Hughes skating style but you gotta give it to the best skater that night . She actually played it too safe in both Olympics.
Oh I agree Sarah skated very well. I just think that she won because the other two skated poorly. If Kwan and Slutskaya both hit then they would have placed higher than they did.
Because under the old system it was a rule that the 4th place after the short program (Sarah Hughes) can only win the competition when she is first in free skate and the first place after short program (Michelle Kwan) is surpassed by her and another skater (Irina Slutskaya) and Maximum third in free skate.....
Every skater in the free program got a point for their position. First got 1. Second got 2. Third got 3. Every skater in the short program got half a point for their position. First got .5. Second got 1. Third got 1.5. Fourth got 2. Hughes 2+1=3 Slutskaya 1+2=3 Kwan .5+3=3.5 If Kwan is second in the free program, she ends up with 2.5 and wins the gold.
@iceskater276 You are absolutely correct.Michelle has nothing to be ashamed of its other people that put too high of expectations on Michelle.and putting her on too high a pedestal.
Sasha is better than Michelle in terms of her spins, laybacks, spirals, (and gasp) even her artistry! Afterall, she is the only skater to hit +3's in the new scoring system for all mentioned above. That being said,if you watch her programs, every movement comes together with the music and that is what makes it so lovely to watch. There were several times she was in the lead after the SP and like I said, had she held it together for the long, she'd win, even under the old scoring system.
MK didn't help herself when she fired both her long time choreographer and coach at the beginning of the 01-02 season, and she did not ask for any inputs regarding her programs from anyone in the USFSA . Major, major mistakes for such an important season of her sporting career. She needed someone on her team like the Cher character in Moonstruck: slap. "SNAP OUT OF IT." I have a hunch Danny Kwan was behind the firing of Lori and Frank; It was never MK's decision despite what she insisted in the press interviews.
But it is quite absurd to say that Sarah Hughes is a better skater than Michelle Kwan. What Kwan has achieved is millions and millions of miles farther than what Sarah has done. Not discrediting Hughes, yes she won a gold medal, but what I'm saying is that just because you win Olympic Gold doesn't mean you become one of the greatest figure skaters in history. Kwan has been cited endless amount of times as one of the best all time, and she's never won Olympic gold. She redefined artistry as well.
A simple medal? Olympic Games come once every 4 years! Who are you kidding? In the books, everybody will be looking back to see who won even 1,000 years from now. They wouldn't care about worlds, maybe nationals if that is what country they are from. I do feel for Michelle, but she seems to be like one of those athletes who was great but couldn't get that one prize that counted the MOST!
ithinkformyself i really dont see why you need to be so nasty. yeah sarah hughes probably deserved to win but it seems like it doesnt matter to you who won as long as it wasnt michelle kwan. while i do agree that other skaters have been overshadowed and you have to give her a lot of credit. michelle kwan may not have had the highest jumps or the fastest spins but thats what makes it a performance sport its not all about whos the fastest or strongest.
The judges pitied her! Sasha should have won the short program and if you listen to the Brits they were honest about Michelle's watered down skate but said that she would probably been given first...the crap pathetically simple long program was a total insult to all the Olympians who worked so hard....and even at that Kwan with as much help as she could possibly get from the judges couldn't hack it....c'mon....that program was a mess and yet she got the same scores as Sarah? Pity...the judges felt so sorry for poor little Shelly that they couldn't let her go home with no bling bling to brag about.
Scott E You are absolutely right. Sasha is a beautiful skater and the technical skating is great. But she hardly ever skates a clean program. Michelle is a better artistic skater and she usually lands her jumps perfectly and she has skated many clean programs. She was robbed of the gold in 1998 when she skated a couple of her best performances. No she wasn't perfect here but neither was Irina. And Sara did not skate that great. Yes she did her jumps but her skating looked kind of like someone without enough experience. The flow just wasn't there.
But the problem I see with Kwan is that she hasn't done anything inventive with her programs. This is why she lost in 1998, she hadn't added new moves to her arsenal. Her spiral had the potential to be real great, but if only she had the guts to add new variations of it like a bielmann one or a fan one.
Scott E don’t be silly. Every competition should be judged from zero; not accumulation from previous achievements. If this time Michelle didn’t perform better than the rest, she wouldn’t get the gold medal; as simple as that.
hey ppl no use saying this why don't you all try going for the olympics in skating it will be difficult to even get a bronze...dun say the olympics..trying going through sectionals or regionals is just as difficult to win a gold competiting with the whole country
Nobody is talking about 2006. irina didnt deserve gold that time. But in Salkt Lake City she really deserved it. And it doesnt matter she had triple triple or not. Her jumps were higher, more clear and more impressive than Sarah's.
Everyone knows how it should be in all fairness - 1 Irina Slutskaya, Sasha Cohen, 2, 3 Michelle Kwan. Medal was stolen from Slutskaya ... Not what Sarah Hughes was not to be ...
Hey people....it seems that the videos of Kwan's disappointment are being removed from you tube....her mommy and daddy must have protested anything but that goofy grin when she is handed anything except first place and won't allow anything but the gushing and swooning comments and videos...this one will be gone soon:( God forbid that little Michelle not have any humiliating stuff for the world to see.

Well, two Americans for sure did earn medals and deserved a spot on the podium....Sarah Hughes Gold and Sasha Cohen Bronze...Sasha so deserved the Bronze medal and a much higher placement in the programs than Kwan...Kwan a washed up diluted repeated short from Nagano...totally unclassy and ungracious pouting at her scores...such a cute little wrinkled nose and thumbs down for her marks..except for all the 5.9s the judges gifted her for 'artistry'..a simple long and she couldn't even manage that!
+Dale Bergman Not interested in a pissing match. I enjoy her but there are others that do more for me. There's no denying her talent and accomplishment, it's just a matter of personal taste.
***** It's not ludicrous, because she never won a gold medal. Thus, she's not gold medal worthy. As amazing an athlete and skater as she was, she wasn't gold medal worthy. She didn't win one, and was never really close. It's not a putdown; it's a fact.
kangaroosbraun: I'm sorry but I had to comment. I agree that Calgary was one of the most exciting olympics, but certainly not b/c of Debi (inspite of her). Midori Ito & Liz Manley brought the house down. Debi was horrendous in the long, and a real let down. Give me Kwan, Irina or Hughes (and dozens of others) over Debi any day. Not trying to be rude, but I always felt Thomas was profoundly overrated. She won only when Witt fell, and she only really won once. Kwan is miles ahead on every level.
Michelle did lose that long program to Sasha, but she certainly shouldn't have been placed behind Irina. Second in the long would have given her the gold. She was robbed... again!

I went to that when I was younger. It was a very amazing experience. I got really good seats considering My dad got the tickets very early.
Michelle stayed in and won her 5th World title and 3 more national titles thereby becoming the most decorated American Figure Skater of all time! That’s all due to her not Winning an Olympic Medal. Many would have given up.
She was spectacular. I wish she'd won a gold medal too...not this one but another one.
@@douglashott9843 Unfortunately, Michelle challenged herself and beat herself, she shouldn't be alone without Frank Carroll to join the 2002 Olympics.
However, Michelle was much more greater than a Olympics gold.
I wanted Michelle to win, but Sarah deserved it instead. Not Irina, thank goodness!!
I remember when these specific Olympic games came to Utah! I had just gotten married in May that year, and at the time the Olympics came I was pregnant with my daughter! And I have pictures of Salt Lake with the Olympic banners that were attached to some of the biggest buildings in the great capital! Great memories! And we were told to try and stay away from the area so that those who were visiting could have more room!
@utubejunkiepig
I love your comments. Sports nowadays are more sciences than arts. MK is rather defined as skater than an athlete.
She's sure an icon.
22 years later and Sarah still gives me chills, what a skate
Мишель Кван,Ирина Слуцкая -эт история фигурного катания! Сару Хьюз кто -нибудь помнит?знает?
Here is an explanation of why Michelle Kwan had to get third in the free program for Sarah Hughes to win the gold.
Every skater in the free program got a point for their position. First got 1. Second got 2. Third got 3. Every skater in the short program got half a point for their position. First got .5. Second got 1. Third got 1.5. Fourth got 2.
Hughes 2+1=3 (4th in short, 1st in free)
Slutskaya 1+2=3 (2nd in short, 2nd in free)
Kwan .5+3=3.5 (1st in short, 3rd in free)
Cohen 1.5+4=5.5 (3rd in short, 4th in free)
If Kwan is second in the free program, she ends up with 2.5 and wins the gold.
Sarah did a great job, maybe her best performance ever, she enjoyed it, and she won. I am sure Michelle understood it. Michelle would be happy for Sarah, that's why Michelle became a legend.
My heart went out to Michelle ---------she showed such class & heart. But it was Sarah hughes night. That's all one can say. ------MJL,76 y/o
No Guts No Glory. Kwan was a great skater with a fatal flaw, she played it too safe.. She was never the best when she had to be.. Sarah Hughes in 2002 had the greatest performance in Olympic history..-Monarch5150-
When ppl thinks figure skating, iconic Michelle Kwan will always basically be the first skater that comes to mind. Ask any pros in the area of skating about the greatest skaters, and I guarantee michelle will pop up.
mariahfan444 I like watching Sasha instead 😄 her flexibility, artistry are just simply amazing; like ballerina on ice
What video were you watching in which Sasha deserves the bronze?? Please.
As far as who is the best, that is a matter of personal opinion. There were great skaters of the past as there will be in the future.
O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
what so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,
whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
o'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
o'er the land of the free
and the home of the brave?
The world championship happens every year lmfao it’s not as amazing as an Olympics
There can only be one winner.
carlotta4th everyone works very hard to go to the Olympics, not only your fave skater 😊
How many World Championships did she win??? 9?
We will always love you, Michelle.
Herodotus3 we were watching the Olympics, it’s irrelevant what their previous achievements. At this competition, Sarah was the best 😘
Sasha Cohen was the best !!!
Michelle felt she didn't need a coach. She played it safe and didn't attack . You could tell. She has nobody to blame but herself . Not a fan of Sarah Hughes skating style but you gotta give it to the best skater that night . She actually played it too safe in both Olympics.
Sarah was lucky, she also surprised what happened at the 2002 Olympics. But she did a good job.
Oh I agree Sarah skated very well. I just think that she won because the other two skated poorly. If Kwan and Slutskaya both hit then they would have placed higher than they did.
Gorgeous gorgeous
I don't get it. How did that Russian girl winning the silver bump Sarah up to winning the gold?
When was Michelle Kwan ever bitter????
i knoow once we lost kwan and then sasha.. it was done
Wait I'm confused. Why did Scott Hamilton say that Sarah needed Irina to beat Michelle for 2nd place in order for Sarah to win the gold?
Because under the old system it was a rule that the 4th place after the short program (Sarah Hughes) can only win the competition when she is first in free skate and the first place after short program (Michelle Kwan) is surpassed by her and another skater (Irina Slutskaya) and Maximum third in free skate.....
Every skater in the free program got a point for their position. First got 1. Second got 2. Third got 3. Every skater in the short program got half a point for their position. First got .5. Second got 1. Third got 1.5. Fourth got 2.
Hughes 2+1=3
Slutskaya 1+2=3
Kwan .5+3=3.5
If Kwan is second in the free program, she ends up with 2.5 and wins the gold.
Bottom line is “if” Michelle did not make any mistakes the standings would have been
Gold-Michelle
Silver- Sarah
Bronze-Irina
Sasha's fall was far worse than Kwan's this night. So Kwan rightfully won the bronzw.
I remember Sarah.
Michelle Kwan could see won 2 gold medals Nagano and salt lake city UT so much pressure on her
MK didn't help herself when she fired both her long time choreographer and coach at the beginning of the 01-02 season, and she did not ask for any inputs regarding her programs from anyone in the USFSA . Major, major mistakes for such an important season of her sporting career. She needed someone on her team like the Cher character in Moonstruck: slap. "SNAP OUT OF IT."
I have a hunch Danny Kwan was behind the firing of Lori and Frank; It was never MK's decision despite what she insisted in the press interviews.
8 World Titles? She won 5 World Titles in the senior division. Were did the other 3 come from?
How did Michelle Kwan get her hands on Sasha Cohen's bronze medal?
The judges pitied her! Sasha should have won the short program and if you listen to the Brits they were honest about Michelle's watered down skate but said that she would probably been given first...the crap pathetically simple long program was a total insult to all the Olympians who worked so hard....and even at that Kwan with as much help as she could possibly get from the judges couldn't hack it....c'mon....that program was a mess and yet she got the same scores as Sarah? Pity...the judges felt so sorry for poor little Shelly that they couldn't let her go home with no bling bling to brag about.
loco madre perfectly stated. Sasha was so much better technically and artistically than MK was at these olympics.
loco madre You sound butt hurt.
Loco is always butt hurt
michelle out shines sarah hughes.
Sarah may be talented, but Michelle is a real grace.
Sasha has never performed 2 clean programs in her career and Sasha is better than kwan on her best day? you are dismissed.
And she's a lawyer now

It was obvious that Michelle was crushed so it was very unnecessary to keep the camera so close in her face.
You skate better when the pressure is less
wow, i understood nothing of what u just said lol...but somehow i believe u... :P
hey ppl no use saying this why don't you all try going for the olympics in skating it will be difficult to even get a bronze...dun say the olympics..trying going through sectionals or regionals is just as difficult to win a gold competiting with the whole country
Nobody is talking about 2006. irina didnt deserve gold that time. But in Salkt Lake City she really deserved it. And it doesnt matter she had triple triple or not. Her jumps were higher, more clear and more impressive than Sarah's.
arakhachatran sorry, 3-3 counts more than 2-2, otherwise why competes? Stay at the regional level and do singles beautifully.
Everyone knows how it should be in all fairness - 1 Irina Slutskaya, Sasha Cohen, 2, 3 Michelle Kwan. Medal was stolen from Slutskaya ... Not what Sarah Hughes was not to be ...
ARTHUR VERSO sorry, I don’t agree with you. I think #1 Sarah, #2 Sasha, #3 Michelle/Irina
Bless your heart. Only Sarah Hughes deserved gold. Sasha silver and Michelle bronze. Irina was awful.
I'm sorry, Sarah Hughes is a good skaker, but her win here was a total fluke.
Why is there an announcer speaking French?
🏩 7:57🥇
Do you like repeating yourself over and over, like it means more by doing so?
Hey people....it seems that the videos of Kwan's disappointment are being removed from you tube....her mommy and daddy must have protested anything but that goofy grin when she is handed anything except first place and won't allow anything but the gushing and swooning comments and videos...this one will be gone soon:( God forbid that little Michelle not have any humiliating stuff for the world to see.
ok idk much about skating so can someone help me out....sarah won the gold...and michelle got the bronze..but only cuz that russian chick beat michelle...what if she hadnt beaten michelle?..would michelle have gotten the gold? and where would sarah have been placed?..this all confuses me lol
Sasha choked and couldn't skate under pressure get over it nut case!
Mountain Lover I was speaking about choke girl who would blow her whole program with one fall. She just could not recover after a fall but Michelle could and has accomplished more than any of the iother skaters have. Both Tara and Sarah deserved their gold medals but poor Sasha..........😰
Am I the only one who doesn't like Michelle's artistry or skating or anything really ? Yes ? Ok...
I can appreciate her skating and tenacity, but she doesn't do much for me aesthetically as others have.
+Dale Bergman Not interested in a pissing match. I enjoy her but there are others that do more for me. There's no denying her talent and accomplishment, it's just a matter of personal taste.
You and the people that judge. She's beyond elite, but not gold medal worthy, as evidenced by her career.
***** It's not ludicrous, because she never won a gold medal. Thus, she's not gold medal worthy. As amazing an athlete and skater as she was, she wasn't gold medal worthy. She didn't win one, and was never really close. It's not a putdown; it's a fact.
Christiana Popovici I like Sarah’s and Sasha’s artistry. And their programs and skating skills at the Olympics were amazing.
was your old youtube account banned so now you have to resort to a new one?
kangaroosbraun: I'm sorry but I had to comment.
Irina was a BEST!
Michelle did lose that long program to Sasha, but she certainly shouldn't have been placed behind Irina. Second in the long would have given her the gold. She was robbed... again!
she was a good skater.... just not enough for a olympic gold
Totally agree.
Sarah never good enough to win any World champion or the National titles......
Sarah was just a Olympics Cinderella.
@idolfan9495 Ohh I see, thank you. I was really confused...
@jejules32 you for one....
You know, Ive been watching Kwan videos on youtube for a while now, and I really think "ithinkformyself" needs professional help. To devote so much time to criticizing someone is really disturbing. If you don't like Kwan, stop watching her videos and making people who did get pissed. Im convinced that your obsession with belittling Kwan indicates something about yourself: Small penis size perhaps?
Oh, what the heck, I am bored so will respond...she C H O K E D and was ugly about her loss....Sasha earned that bronze medal but again Kwan was gifted....her thumbs down and nose wrinkle when her scores came up in the short was revolting..she thought it was cute but it was plain irritating to say the least. Sasha didn't choke at all....she was fantastic in the short and long....and it was her first as in FIRST int'l competition...couldn't say that about Kwan....
