I remember the impact of hearing Gustav Leonhardt's recording of this many years ago, and wondered if this performance would compare. Then, Sebastian Hennig sang the soprano aria, and my friend and colleague, Max van Egmond, the following recitative/arioso. This is just as beautiful, in its own way. And to hear Julia Doyle and Max's former student and colleague, Peter Kooji is perfect confirmation that we are indeed blessed to have performances like this one available (and, online and free as well). Rudolf Lutz has accomplished something are great value in his traversal of this greatest of all repertoire. Thanks to him, his musicians and those who support this great project.
Max van Egmond has always been my favourite singer especially for Bach. His performance of the first aria of Bach Cantata 22 under Gustav Leonhardt has remained to this day to be my favourite sole singing of all time Strangely enough I played it to a friend today before I saw your comment Not bad for a recording done about 50 years ago I was a huge fan of peter Schreier too Perhaps you also knew Peter who unfortunately died last Christmas
Back in about 1980, while in college, I read advice to the effect that when one has heard all of Bach's secular music, it is time to delve into the cantatas, motets, and masses, where the greatest beauty lies. This cantata provides ample evidence for this advice. Hoomeyow!!
No me pierdo ninguna pieza.
Julia Doyle surpasses even herself here. The unbelievable variation of tone and colour, her wonderful weaving in and out of the oboe line, the intensity of emotion are utterly ravishing. So moving and beautiful.
Bach, the night before the sabbath, a gift for our tired and often frightened hearts. Please bless our Indian brothers and sisters and all others struck by Covid-19.
Hervorragende Interpretation dieser komplexen Kantate. Großartige Leistung der Tontechniker! Sehr kohärente Mikrophone in einer schwierigen Akustik. Kompliment!
Voces extraordinarias. Lutz siempre sublime
I'd have to agree! She exhibits the perfect soprano, so clear and soaring! An effortless climb into the musical stratosphere; gorgeous and haunting at once.
Too often they are now replaced by flutes. Beautiful as the flute is this music sounds so much better with this original instrumentation. They were both wonderful here.
What an incredibly rich tapestry is the opening chorus of this cantata. Music of stunning depth and beauty, with so much happening. Bach at his most sublime, in a performance that could hardly be bettered. This is one of the greatest channels on UA-cam.
Your accurate description confirms my view, namely that the depth and ingenuity of Bach is unsurpassed. This opening movement blows Handel's entire oeuvre out of the water. His music is one-dimensional, as the late Gustav Leonhardt once remarked. But Bach is always original and unpredictable. Take BWV 1047 for example (often ruined by too high a tempo), from about 2:30 am Bach takes you through all the possible modulations that you can hardly repeat. Or the Gigue's bizarre chords from the sixth English suite, inimitable! Or his Chaconne, Partita No. 2 BWV 1004, where Bach suggests a complete synfonia with one or two strings, unbelievable when you hear it played by Hillary Hahn or Jeanine Jansen ....
I quite agree: the richness of sounds in the opening is truly impressive. One wonders what Bach would have achieved if he had had the orchestral means of the 19th century at his disposal. On the other hand: It always amuses me to think that I hear Bach's music much better than he could hear it himself, with the very limited means at his disposal. Any average music lover can hear now the Saint Matthew Passion performed incomparably better than the one Bach had to undergo at its premiere in Saint Thomas.
It’s kind of touching to see the tacet members of the ensemble gently moving to the music and with the glow in their eyes while the aria is being sung.
These musicians, both instrumental as well as choral are clearly 'the real deal'. I feel sure Rudolf Lutz is an inspirational leader as well as conductor.
You don't really know that! All musicians at that time were bound to either a monarch or church - or both - and were doubtless inspired to write music which encapsulated their 'sponsors'. Whether you like it or not, inspiration for Bach could come from many sources, nature particularly, and even human life. Please don't proselytise and presume religious faith was the prime source of inspiration.
7:31 Aria (soprano): Die Seele ruht in Jesu Händen Die Seele ruht in Jesu Händen, Wenn Erde diesen Leib bedeckt. Ach ruft mich bald, ihr Sterbeglocken, Ich bin zum Sterben unerschrocken, Weil mich mein Jesus wieder weckt.
You all praise the performance and the soloist. Yes, they are good, but there is just one who is responsible to lift them all and that is the work of the composer. jsb. Have a bad composer and nothing is left over
The heading is extremely inappropriate in singling out the name of one singer. The soprano and bass soloists are quite a contrast: the soprano has basically all-but-memorized her part, while the bass is totally reliant on reading his, jerking his head up pointlessly to look at the public. Why performers and conductors find this acceptable - and in a video yet - is not known to me. It really should not be - it looks terrible.
Julia Doyle is an outstanding soprano. I was deeply moved with her beautiful voice.
We couldn`t agree more.
Fantastic voice of Julia Doyle ! Thanks for this gift !
La voz de Julia Doyle es maravillosa.

Just beyond belief...... the soprano aria is perfection; superlative.....lost for words.....ecstatic.....Bach and everyone Thank you for magnificence.
Julia Doyle's performance was mesmerizing

Hennig's singing of soprano arias was superb.

Bravo por unos extraordinarios solistas e interpretes; Muchas gracias.
Yeah that aria is so unique and sublime, and this performance is the best.
No me pierdo ninguna pieza.
Julia Doyle surpasses even herself here. The unbelievable variation of tone and colour, her wonderful weaving in and out of the oboe line, the intensity of emotion are utterly ravishing. So moving and beautiful.
That soprano is one of the most moving musicians I’ve ever heard. She’s lovely, too.
Agree completely. Julia Doyle is simply amazing.
Superb performance, so pure. Love the original instruments, and the use of minimal vibrato. Ditto for the soprano who reminds me of Dame Emma Kirkby

Nah wtf is this song doesn't even sound like it?!
I've said it before, and I'll never really stop saying it - Julia Doyle and Bach 👏👏👍👍❤❤👌
I'd have to agree! She exhibits the perfect soprano, so clear and soaring! An effortless climb into the musical stratosphere; gorgeous and haunting at once.
A special thumbs up for the recorder players ! Great job !! *:D*
Too often they are now replaced by flutes. Beautiful as the flute is this music sounds so much better with this original instrumentation. They were both wonderful here.
Perfect performance. It is a great joy to see Peter Kooy singing with the other brilliant members.
Son 22 minutos de música maravillosa
I just discover this magnificent and sublime cantata! The soprano is singing the perfection.
Bach is a genious! This is heaven on earth.
Bravo Julia.
Exceptional singing and playing from all! One of the best presentations of this cantata!

@@Clearsky1945 Or by Amandine Beyer in the Reflexion to BWV 09, an astonishing performance.
@@michaelpinker7618 @joangarcia-alsina2932 You are right, what Amandine Beyer shows in her interpretation of 'De Chaconne' is unheard of!
What a joy, what an amusement, great work! Thank you very much!
Absolutely stunning performance.
A beautiful performance by all involved particularly the combination of oboe and soprano with the recorders.
She sings like an angel!
What a wonderful cantata this is. Fantastic performance.
In 7:31 Aria (soprano) is beautiful.
My favorite!
what a lovely cantata, what a great performance, bravo from Canada.

How fabulous is that trumpet in "Wenn einstens die Posaunen schallen" :O :O :O
The tenor at 6:10 is outstanding
Merci.... extraordinaire!!!
Julia Doyle makes me feel like I’m in love again

The music is like a warm, snug, loving embrace! Wraps & insulates & protects you.
Just what we needed in these times. Thanks so much.

It looks like he wants to devour her
ENCORE? ENCORE? Merci
DOES THE OPENING CHORUS OF THIS CANTATA EVER SOUND LIKE JOHANNES BRAHMS IN THE MAKING? I WAS REMINDED OF BRAHMS REQUIEM.
Would you applaud the presence of God ?
