    Mister Fig, I so enjoyed your shared experience. I hope to see you at the San Francisco show. I’m a West Coaster. It is always fun and such a temptation. I was particularly moved by the Lincoln and especially the Vietnam Memorials. I know one person on the memorial but nevertheless just experiencing that emotional place is almost more than I can hold within my chest. It nearly always brings a tear to my eye. I appreciate you sharing your experience there. BTW The pens you brought home are pretty nice too. I’ll be looking forward to some interesting reviews.🦊

    What a haul! As an Australian I enjoyed standing on the same sport where MLK Jnr gave his “I have a dream speech.” It was a very special moment for me, as MLK Jnr is a great hero of mine. What a haul! I am excited about your review of some of these and your collab with GPC. Good stuff!

    It was great to meet you at the show! Thanks so much for stopping to chat with my partner and me (you actually got us on camera, looking at pens!) Thanks also for encouraging me to pick up the pen I'd been admiring at the Carolina Pen Co table - I can't stop staring at it, and it's a wonderful writer. I also loved seeing Ryan Krusac's work, as always. I was particularly impressed by the scrimshaw pens that had mother of pearl and abalone inlays in the caps: "stars" in the form of Ursa Minor and Ursa Major. Someday I will buy one of those, if I get the chance. :) And of course Franklin Christoph never disappoints. But I totally missed Shawn Newton's table - how did that happen?? Anyway, thanks again for chatting with us. It was lovely to meet you in person. I hope you enjoy the SF Pen Show - that was the show I always attended when I lived in Seattle, and I'm sad to miss it this year. Now that I live in Pittsburgh, there are more shows within driving distance than I can shake a stick at, haha. Be well, and safe travels to you.

But I would want the probably impossible task of being able to switch between inks, not just have them all come out at the same time. Thanks Dave. Looks like a nice experience - and nice haul! I DO have a request though, as I saw the Robert Oster shimmering ink. And I was wondering just HOW do you pair inks with your various pens? Do you have a stash of 'throwaway' FPs - like Platinum Preppies - that you'd use, or something else? Or would you actually place a 'problem ink' into a four figure, 'grail' pen? I realize that other YT vloggers have covered this subject, but I'm interested in YOUR opinion/thoughts. (Forgive me IF you've covered this subject before)

      I typically clean out my pens each week, so I don't keep ink in them very long. The ink I choose for a pen usually depends on the ease of cleaning for that particular pen.

      Ordered a Micarta Magna Carta directly from the source. Nib was terrible (slit cut off center and very sharp and scratchy) and the pen body material has a lot of pitting. I understand that this can happen with micarta, but this is really extreme. I had the nib worked on at the Dutch Pen Show after I couldn't get anywhere with it and it writes better now, but it dries out terribly fast. Too fast for my taste. Probably going to sell it on.

    I really wish you would cover vintage fountain pens, especially those with flexible nibs. I have less than zero interest in modern fountain pens, which, frankly, still sounds like an oxymoron to me.

    • @user-br3sl9go3b
      @user-br3sl9go3b 2 роки тому

      It's fun to read remarks about vintage fountain pens. But reviews are more or less worthless. Each one is unique in terms of condition, recondition, and performance given the age, handling, and restoration. I couldn't rush out and buy one that matches what the reviewer has.

    • @singlesideman
      @singlesideman 2 роки тому

      @@user-br3sl9go3b that isn't really the case. Yes, when buying pens that haven't been serviced and set up properly, or pens that have been damaged, or pens that weren't very good to begin with, you will find tremendous inconsistencies, and they won't perform well. When a quality, top tier vintage fountain pen that isn't damaged is properly serviced and set up it will have writing performance comparable to other pens from that same manufacturer and line. There are certainly differences from nib to nib because each was hand finished, which is just brilliant, and this is especially so with nibs made in the 1920s and earlier, but I can assure you that each of my Waterman's 55s, while having their own personalities (due mostly to differences between nib grinds) has a a similar writing quality, nice and juicy with excellent ink flow, and each of my Wahl All Metal Pens behaves similarly while still having their own personalities. You can certainly review them if they're working as they should. I have been collecting and using vintage fountain pens since 1983, and have many friends in this community who do excellent work in getting these wonderful devices to work as they should. They're very much like vintage sports cars - the top tier ones, that is. Saying that one can't review a 1956 Porsche 356 because it could be unrestored and in need of repair and servicing is silly. Get it serviced and, if necessary, restored, and then you can review its performance because if it's done as it should be, it will be performing as it should. Anything that isn't brand new will need maintenance and service and repair. Also, using a fountain pen for a very long time, like a hundred years, will not significantly change how it writes unless one has literally worn off the tipping on the nib, or a very worn spot on the tip has developed over the years, and that can happen, but it's fairly uncommon, and nibs can be retipped.

    • @user-br3sl9go3b
      @user-br3sl9go3b 2 роки тому

      @@singlesideman Yes, I won't argue with much of what you say. But your 1956 Porsche isn't like mine. The film Lord of the Rings is the same one whenever and wherever you see it. And the "modern" Pelikan M800 with a medium steel nib sent to Figboot for review is going to be virtually identical to the one I decide to buy. Watching reviews of vintage pens and cars is a whole lot of fun. It's interesting, informative, and delightful. Figboot sometimes features a pen that is no longer made. But that show and tell serves a much different purpose than the customary reviews. Not just the nibs of vintage pens, but the fit and the finish will be unique too.

    • @singlesideman
      @singlesideman 2 роки тому

      @@user-br3sl9go3b the reality is that much too much is made of the so-called "I can't review these because they are not identical" argument. You can review single barrel bourbons. You can review single malt scotches. Each barrel is different, but you can certainly review them, and compare them with other bourbons and scotches. I'm not interested at all in identical monoculture. It will never be the best at anything, and it will never be close to the best. All it will have is predictable consistency, and that's pretty tedious. The French Laundry blows away McDonald's every single time. The fact that vintage fountain pen companies were able to reconcile the best of hand finishing with the consistency and reliability of precision machining is a real high point in manufacturing, and a beautiful artistic dimension that is completely absent in modern fountain pens. These old pens aren't imprecise at all. They're very formidable little machines, very robust and precise and reliably so, with the benefits of that approach to manufacture, but also the benefits of more custom work to make the pen just as the customer wants it. It's the perfect combination. BTW, have you seen any vintage fountain pen catalogs? The Waterman's and Wahl catalogs from the twenties and earlier are absolutely incredible. There are so many grinds, and one that I especially love is Wahl's flexible half stub - now THAT is an incredible nib...

    • @singlesideman
      @singlesideman 2 роки тому

      @@user-br3sl9go3b and you're talking about making records. I make records. I'm a composer and musician. One of my biggest dreams and greatest pursuits is making a recording that changes every time it is played, because the fact that records are the same every time you play them is what makes records so limited, so dead, and lacking in dynamism and vitality - in other words, what makes them so inherently limited and problematic, and there are several possibilities for overcoming this limitation. You see, music was originally meant to be performed, and interpreted if coming from the recording that is a score. Records are the same every time that they are played, so the only two ways to make static recordings dynamic, that I know of, is to make the material so complex that every listening produces new results, or to make a device that plays different parts at the same time that are of different lengths with voices that have tessituras that overlap, which is the basis of a piece of mine that changes over the course of over a thousand years with only one minute of recorded material. There's much more in this than you may have expected...
