    My Palette for this painting, and most everything else I paint: Titanium White, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Transparent Maroon, Cadmium Scarlet, Cadmium Yellow Pale, Manganese Blue Hue, Ultramarine Blue, and Ivory Black.
    For my brushes, I use Princeton Catalyst Polytip Flat brushes: Size 2, 4, 6, 10 and for the fine detail I use the Scepter Gold II - Size 3 Round brush. I use the Blick Painting Knife #2 3/8" x 1-1/2" for most of my application I occasionally use a #4 as well for larger paintings.

    I am currently painting a Springer Spaniel and I want to run to my studio right now and try your technique of using a palette knife here and there in the painting - but it is time to fix dinner - argh! I am so happy to find this video. It was in my suggestions as I watched your interview with Jennifer Gennari. Thank you for sharing your secrets! Just like you, I get really close to paintings, hoping beautiful brush work techniques magically pass into my hands 🙂

    New subscriber here! I love your work, and your videos. Your panel prep video was particularly helpful. And this buffalo is GORGEOUS!
    I hope you don't mind the unsolicited advice/suggestion: it would be great to see your mixing pallet as you paint! You have some free space in the corners of your video - maybe you could set up a second camera and capture that as well?
    Cheers!

    Really enjoyed watching your process thank you for taking the time to share. I found your use of the palette knife for the edges interesting I like your mix of abstract mark-making and realism. Can't wait for the next one. Beautiful work! Thanks, loads.

    Great video!! Thank you so much, Mark. Very informative. I was looking for a list of supplies that you mentioned in the video. I love the deep reddish browns that you use

    Great video! It’s so insightful to see how other artists' approach their painting. Thank you for sharing! I love your channel.
    One question...what are you using on your easel to hold the panel? My canvas holders are so deep they create a shadow on thin panels. I haven't found anything that can hold a panel securely when I try to place the panel to the front of the canvas holder.

      My easel was built by Mark Roberts www.robertseasels.com the panel holders are very simple and incredibly functional… I don’t know if you can find them anywhere else.

      @@thebusinessof_artI would love to own one of Mark Roberts' easels! They are beautiful and functional. I have similar blocks on my canvas holders but they are just flat. I might have to go hunt down some thicker ones and cut a knotch in the front if I can't find something similar. Thanks!

      I take a ton of pictures, but also pay for image licensing from sites like Dreamstime.com and 123rf.com

    Do you seal the drawing so it doesn’t mix with the oils or you don’t have that problem?

    • @thebusinessof_art
      @thebusinessof_art  3 місяці тому

      I’ve never had that problem. With this approach of sketching with a pencil, I’m not using any thinned down paint for an underpainting and I already have a toned panel. If I were smearing on a thin ground or laying in a thin washy underpainting over the pencil I might want to seal it before doing that.
