Preparing Hardboard & MDF Panels for Painting
Hey Mark! Can you post a photo of your onion and succulent paintings?
keeps asking for permission to control my mac, i let it and it continues to ask. can you help?
Have you tried restarting?
Thanks mate, another handy video. I do wonder if, with that type of painting, in the longer orientation. Perhaps you would be better to turn the painting on its side. So you use as many pixels as possible and don't need to crop so much.
Great suggestion!
This was very useful buddy. Thanks for sharing :o)
Glad it was helpful!
New subscriber here! I love your work, and your videos. Your panel prep video was particularly helpful. And this buffalo is GORGEOUS! I hope you don't mind the unsolicited advice/suggestion: it would be great to see your mixing pallet as you paint! You have some free space in the corners of your video - maybe you could set up a second camera and capture that as well? Cheers!
Thanks for the great advice. I definitely plan to change that for future process videos.
Came back to your channel at the perfect time! This was so informative to me. I am also a mixed native so that made me very happy seeing you kwani :) Hope to see you at the Indian market in Santa Fe? Thank you both so much!
So glad it was helpful!
What is the gesso Kwani uses that is not absorbent?
Michael Harding makes non-absorbent acrylic primer in different colors. It's excellent. I get online at DickBlick or Jerry's.
She uses Golden sandable hard gesso
First time listening to your podcast. A lot of interesting stuff in here. I was surprised though how little time was spent on art business and asking about how TJ Cunningham's business worked. I don't feel like I learned anything about how he sells his paintings. I also kept being curious what business books he was referring to, as he brought up books multiple times. Anyway, I might be missing something or didn't see an episode that would help me out, but I just figured from the name of your channel that business would be more of a focus. Regardless, thanks for the effort you've put into interviewing these artists!
Thanks for the feedback
What a nice guy - so energetic and positive but, practical too.
So glad you enjoyed it
Yep that was great!
Thanks Lucy
I just recently came across you podcasts and have really enjoyed getting to know you and the artists you interview...I've recommended your podcast to many of my students and fellow artists. I know Tim and and his dedication and desire to be the best artist, husband, and dad is, in part, his tireless motivation work at it each day. I remember when he was a student and when the day in the school studio was finished and the rooms became empty since everyone else was heading to supper and he would be the only one left working. That Tim and that was his daily routine for him. That always impressed me how he was willing to give up socializing around campus and having fun to get that valuable extra time in. I hope these interviews continue to grow and inspire others.
So glad you found value! And thanks for sharing!!
This was one of the most interesting and informative discussions!! Thank you!!!
So glad you found value in it!!
Thank you!
You’re welcome!
In regards to finding the right galleries. Do you look for one man show galleries or galleries that feature many different type of artists?
I typically look for multi-artist galleries… but can’t hurt to approach them if you feel it might be a good fit
Just out of curiosity; for these print sights like fineartamerica people can easily cut and paste your artwork and print it for themselves for free. Consider it like online piracy. How do we prevent that?
I think that will rarely happen… the quality would be much lower than paying for a print. I think it’s worth any of that minimal risk.
A Great piece of advice.
Thanks
So much great advice 👏👏👏
Glad you think so!
Super podcast! Learned stuff, interesting and inspiring. Thank you Mark and Tim (TJ). Tim, I think I spoke to you at OPA in Bennington VT??? In any case, I have followed your work for a while. Every time I hear when an artist is selling work without galleries, I’m encouraged.
Thanks for the feedback!
So appreciate your doing these podcasts, and your interview with Tim was fantastic! He is such a knowledgeable and generous instructor, and his critiques are invaluable, his eye is sooo right on!
So glad you enjoyed it!
I love these interviews ~ please do not stop. It shows us a different more personal side to each artist we admire.
So glad you’re finding value!
These interviews are so interesting, informative and inspiring. Thanks for doing them Mark. You choose great interviewees. I’ve learned something from every one of them.
So glad you like them! Thank you!
Thanks for the awesome podcast, Mark! "...believeing that you can is way, way, WAY more important than knowing how...if you don't believe that you can, even if you know how, you still won't"
Love that! Thanks for listening in!!
Love that! Thanks for listening in!!
Hey isn't there any possibility that AI has/will be ruining the artist society.
Good question! I think AI is definitely changing the artistic landscape for sure. When it comes to fine art, physical paint with real textures and the human element, I think there will always be an appreciation and market for it. --The impact of AI is yet to be seen though... I don't know how anyone can really predict how it will ultimately change or affect the art world.
Can I ask what you mount them on or how you frame them or do you sell them as panels?? Thanks Ersilia
I typically mount them into a traditional frame with some finish nails. But, I also will offer them for sale unframed, with the intent of the purchaser choosing a frame for it.
Helpful. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Another great and inspiring interview! The book you mentioned, Steal Like An Artist, is by Austin Kleon. He wrote another good book relative to some of your discussion titled Show Your Work.
Thanks for sharing!
Fantastic
Thank you! Cheers!
Happy to hear you are doing Laguna in October! One of my favorite events to keep tabs on. If I wasn't headed to Italy, it would be tempting to head to the coast. LOTS of great painters! Thanks for the conversation. Great comments about the importance of learning from other artists... with some great tips on how to do it.
Thanks for watching Scott!
These podcasts are brilliant. Topnotch artists & interviews. As a longtime painter, I love listening while working & I can't say enough about how really great these are!
Thank you so much for watching!
I really enjoyed the interview with Mark. He's the man. i hope this helps some of you get to where you want to be going.
Thank you Albin!!
Love this!!! I love Greg's work and hearing his story. Great job, Mark!!!
Thank you Carol!
Love his work. Great podcast!
So glad you’re listening
I've never met Brent but have seen his art and admired it for a long time. So fun to hear his story. Thanks, Mark.
🙌🏼
I learned from Dave several years ago during a paint out in Colorado. Great teacher and excellent artist. Great interview.
Phenomenal artist…
Great insights and info. Another great podcast.
Thanks Carol 🙌🏼
She is so insightful and so encouraging. Thanks for a great podcast!
Our pleasure!
I love these interviews with the women artists!! It really helps to understand that I am not feeling the things I feel as a woman artist all by myself. Thanks, Mark, for diving into the world of women artists.
So glad!
Great podcast! So much great info.
Thank you
This is another wonderful conversation that inspires and encourages visual artists. Mark, you are doing such a wonderful job! Love these episodes!
👊🏼👍🏼
Thank you so much for these video series with some of the greatest artists of our time. I have adored Greg Beecham, his art and his philosophy of life for a long time
So glad I got to interview him. An artist’s artist.
Oh cool, I wrote some articles for Workshop Magazine and I think I still have the one with Frank on the cover. I was so sad when that magazine was no longer published. It was my favorite.
total bummer!
I’m almost through. Enjoyed hearing about Frank’s backstory (backstories actually). He has such wisdom in business and painting. I bought his Walter Foster book - has to be many years ago now. His point about making sure your art stands out and is constantly improving is something many art marketers neglect but is of uttermost importance. I intend to listen to this a second time and take notes.
so glad you loved it, thanks for watching!
If the content poster is still checking the comments, I have a question. You mentioned you use birch boards. I guess you use the same process? I'd like to use the grain of the wood in my work so I bought Liquitex Clear Gesso. Does that also need to be sanded and multiple layers put on before I use paint on the wood? Is it just oils that affect the surfaces that way or can I get away with less gesso with acrylics used as stains? Thanks for any reply.
I’ve never used the clear gesso, I would definitely try to follow any directions you see on the product labeling, and I would definitely err on the side of too many coats rather than not enough. Sorry I’m not more help here.
Excellent insights
Thank you for watching!
I actually purchased one of those seascape DVD's when I first started painted !
That’s awesome!!
Great video! It’s so insightful to see how other artists' approach their painting. Thank you for sharing! I love your channel. One question...what are you using on your easel to hold the panel? My canvas holders are so deep they create a shadow on thin panels. I haven't found anything that can hold a panel securely when I try to place the panel to the front of the canvas holder.
My easel was built by Mark Roberts www.robertseasels.com the panel holders are very simple and incredibly functional… I don’t know if you can find them anywhere else.
@@thebusinessof_artI would love to own one of Mark Roberts' easels! They are beautiful and functional. I have similar blocks on my canvas holders but they are just flat. I might have to go hunt down some thicker ones and cut a knotch in the front if I can't find something similar. Thanks!
@@amandamorton2438 happy to help! Good Luck!
At minute 1:36 Frank mentions an artist, Ru Lee? How do you spell his name. I want to look at his work. Thank for the terrific podcast. I learn something new with each one!
His name is spelled Ruo Li, thanks for listening in!
Frank is a wonderful painter. I've admired his brush work for a long time. And oh how I miss Wildlife Art Magazine!
Thank you for watching!
This is absolutely amazing to listen to!! Thank you so much Mark and Frank!!
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching!!
Hey, i think you mispelled Serrano in the tittle, i love your interviews, keep going please! ❤
Fixed! Thanks!
