Awesome timing coming across this video. I had no idea how to get the styrofoam out . Took my helmet apart and gave it a makeover this morning . Open face with a bitwel bubble screen like the one in your vid. I’m wrapped it’s like new again . Thankyou 🤘👍

These are awesome. My grandfather was a Harley fanatic. Built em, rode em just loved 2 wheels. Never got to know him as he died when I was young. Now that I’ve gotten older I realize I have his same love of motorcycles. I found his old school 3/4 helmet and am trying to restore it with “Papaw” written on the side. These videos are really helpful. Love it

As far as chips, depending on how deep they are you can use spot putty if they’re pretty shallow. If they’re deeper you can use a polyester body filler but whichever you use, just be sure to apply it in thin coats to avoid shrinkage. Good luck with your project! :)
Another helmet skillfully restored and saved from the waste pile and garage sale. Love seeing old vintage retro helmet with a new life injected into them, should be good for the next 20 years now. Good on you lady, keep up the good work!
And never forget any helmet is better than a no helmet...just wanted to state this before you get the helmet-safety brigade unleash all of their usual vitriol onto you :-)

If you buy a Milliners hat stretcher, you can mount it on a vise. Then take the foam core and position it on the Milliners form tightened just enough to hold the core in place. That will free up your hands stretch the plastic shell and position it. Also, using a hair dryer on the shell just to warm it up, will make it more pliable and easier to manipulate.

I like collecting old stuff and I have a huge preservation mentality on keeping things original I recently got the idea in my head to paint the oldest one my favorite and it hasn't been able to leave my head 😂

Excellent work young lady and very informative. I feel I can do this now. Let me offer a couple of suggestions. You can get the 3M contact adhesives in a brush on form and it may be easier to use in some areas, no overspray to worry about. I believe that if you do happen to crack a Styrofoam shell some carpenters wood glue will be the answer. Also, I noticed you struggling to work the Styrofoam back into the helmet as you worked alone. How about a hook screwed into the wall or your workbench that you could attach the D rings to. That would allow you to stretch the shell and leave a hand free to manipulate the Styrofoam. Again, great job!

Hi Phil! Unfortunately, I don't restore them for others. Because they're "safety equipment" (even though they're WAY too old to be certified), there's simply too much liability. With today's sue-happy society I just can't take the risk. Sorry about that.

what can be used to polish a hazy looking 60's Easy Riders helmet? I actually think it is plastic. I have 2 of them I need to bring the luster back. Love your videos!!!
Thanks! Meguire's makes a plastic polish called Plast-x that works great! If they're heavily scratched you might need something a little more abrasive like a cutting compound. A 6" dual action polisher is a good tool to use. It's not as effective as an actual buffer but it's much safer for the surface for a beginner. Once you get it polished up with the Plast-x or cutting compound, just toss a coat of wax on & it should sparkle! Good luck! :)
How would one go about stripping the pain off of one of these? Found one at a thrift but I want to strip the paint out of the inside and repaint it
Hmm, that's a good question. Since the actual shell is clear (if it's painted on the inside) I'm not sure how you could remove the paint without scarring (by sanding) or blurring (with chemicals) the clear shell. I guess if it were me, I'd paint the exterior. You might find some information online if you look up how R/C car lexan bodies are painted; those are also painted on the inside. Hey, good work!! Could ya give me how to fix or attach a strap to my helmet,the helmet is very old and the metal thing that attaches the strap to the helmet had rest and was ruined could ya help me how to attach a new strap????
Thanks! The straps are usually riveted on so you'd need to either drill that out or carefully grind it off then put a new rivet in. Most standard rivets aren't very attractive but I believe you can get smooth head rivets. You probably won't find them at the hardware store but somewhere like Fastenal may carry them or you might need to do a little poking around online.

I have one with a desert painting on it with that glitter paint .. it a bit cracked is there any way to restore it ?
If you're asking about the artwork, if is painted on the surface you should be able to. If it's a graphic inside the shell, about the best you could do is remove the "guts" of the helmet and touch up the cracked looking areas with matching paint on the inside of the shell.
The black stripe on the gold Buco helmet in this video had some scuffs and scratches that I touched up on the inside before putting the interior in. Hope that helps some! Good luck with your project! :)

Hello, I recently acquired two vintage helmets that are both in need of some cleaning, but they were free to me so I am not complaining. I noticed some scratches and scuffing on them both and I was wondering what the best way to polish them was? I know maguires plast-x compound works great for buffing vehicle headlights, but I'm not sure if it would damage the outside of the helmet or the helmet visor. What do you use to polish your helmets and visors? Any help is greatly appreciated!
Lucky you! You’re on the right track with the Plastic-x. If they’re the type of helmet that has the color on the inside of the shell (like the sparkly ones) then you should be able to polish the scratches out using Plastic-x or a rubbing compound if they’re a little worse. You could take more drastic measures for more serious scratches by wet sanding with 1000-2000 grit then polish.
For visors I always use the Plast-x.

I'm sorry, I don't. I know some full face helmets have snaps and the side pivots. You could try Biltwell; maybe something that fits a Gringo model? Good luck! I hope you find one & sorry it took so long to respond, I didn't get a notification.
Do you know how to refurbished the actual inside the helmet? I have an old helmet that need band new lining only the styrofoam remains.
Hi there, I do. I'm editing a video right now that shows an entire interior re-do from start to finish. It should be done in a day or 2. Do you know anyplace that I could get an old helmet restored? It was my Brothers racing helmet. He was murdered and I want to give it to his kids.
Oh gosh! I’m so sorry to hear that. :( I don’t personally know anyone who does it but I have seen some restored ones on eBay. Maybe check there (or Etsy?) and get in touch with the seller. They are probably the ones who did the restoration.
I also recently posted a how-to video showing the whole process. You might be able to restore it yourself & it’d be even that much more special. :)
It's just a hunk of styrofoam! I feel better about my new el cheapo ILM helmet. At least it's DOT approved.
Yes, it is. As I mention @:20 seconds into the video, these vintage helmets are NOT up to current safety standards. They are essentially a stylish hat. I think just about ANY current helmet would offer more protection than a vintage helmet.
