  • In this video I am forging a Spartan sword from the movie 300! This is my take on Leonidas' sword from the movie which is a Greek Kopis sword with a 108 layer random Damascus pattern with double fullers on each side, mild steel guards and a bronze wire wrap handle.

      I know what you mean on the fuller. At the time I could only find a 1/4” ball end mill. I would have rather used a 1/2” and then with the taper it would disappear to a point. That’s what the fuller on my quillion dagger build does. 👍 thanks for watching!

    Great work! I've been planning to make a similar sword, modeled after the one used by the character Ahmad Sanjar from the Turkish TV series Uyanis Buyuk Selcuklu. He was Sultan of the Seljuk Turks about the same time period when Troy fell. I'm glad I watched your video, so I'll have a headstart on the process!
    Next time you use twisted wire for a handle, try annealing the wire before you twist it, then anneal it again before you wrap the handle. If you start the twist with freshly annealed wire, it won't try to untwist itself. You'll need to polish it after you finish wrapping, but the whole process will go more easily with soft wire!

    What is the purpose of the kerosine? isn't there a chance the liquid would go between the billets and when burned leave residue or something?

    • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  2 роки тому +1

      You want the kerosene to seep between the layers. When it burns off it does leave a residue that prevents scale. It doesn’t affect the layers from forge welding. Thanks for watching, Joe.

    I don’t know squat about swords, I’m a former jarhead who used rifles. That said, I feel if I was to go into a fight with an edged weapon, the spartan sword seems like the one I’d choose. Light weight, built well, seems balanced, it’s obvious an “up close weapon, but what sword isn’t.
    If I’m wrong, I’d be curious to hear why.

    • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  Рік тому

      I'm totally with you on that. While a longsword or katana is a nice sword, it just doesn't have the power and umph that this one does. This one is a chopper but still lightweight enough to easily control. It's just a fun weapon to wield. There's a reason this is one of the very few builds I won't sell. 😉. Thanks for watching, Brian!

    This may be a nitpick, but won’t the copper on the handle green with oxidation? And won’t it turn the users palm green as well?

    • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  Рік тому +1

      This actually isn't pure copper wire, its just coated. If it was, I'd just coat the handle in a thin layer of clear enamel so it wouldn't oxidize. Thanks for watching.

    • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  2 роки тому +1

      I know that sounds impressive, but you really don't see a pattern in that many layers. It just looks like a blurry fingerprint because the pattern is too fine. The sweet spot is really between 100 and 400 layers where you get the good contrast. Thanks for watching, Lee!

    That beval transition must have been a nightmare and you barely touched on it in the video, is this because you felt it would be boring due to the excessive hand sanding required? I ask because I'm intrigued to know how you tackled that and kept it even on both sides, even WITH a sanding jig it must have been a challenge, no?

    • @TyrellKnifeworks
      @TyrellKnifeworks  Рік тому

      I did a video on 5 tips for successful UA-cam when I got my silver play button in Feb. Check that out. Have goals. Getting monitized in the first year is a good goal. Know and brand your channel. Stick to that content. Ex: Don't confuse people by staring with a bunch of blacksmith videos and then do one on cats. Know how the algorithm works: watch a lot of the UA-cam content provider videos on how to be successful. Lastly, if you join my Patreon, I'll gladly do some 1on1 coaching with you.
