Unsellables UK - The Wightmans - Season 1 - Episode 9
#UnsellablesUK
I can't believe, honestly I can't believe potential buyers can not see beyond the decor.
Laura: believe me when I say most ppl can't see beyond their own nose ‼️ This house is fantastic, both before and after ...
Agree 100%! Plus...what in the world will people do when they get the keys to their "new" home and it's empty!!! and they have to figure out what to do? 🤦🏻♀🤦🏻♀
easy.......but when you see nothing but junk and holes, nope, I wouldn't buy it. All i could think is more money. @@debrap947
One house I looked at, the bedroom was a hideous bright yellow and we opened the door to check out the size of the closet and there was an aborted fetus doll in a jar on the shelf. I remember that house from 22 years ago. Sometimes you just can't get around your first impressions of a house. Personally, I can't get around that weird painting in this house. Makes you think there are bad vibes left there from the owners. My friend tells me of a pentagram painted on the floor of a house they looked at. Nope.
In the case of this home I agree.
I bought a house that was a tip in 2009. It was like a garbage dump inside, with nothing working and everything broken. However, I saw PAST that and looked at the room sizes. I more than doubled my money, selling it 5 years later. I don't understand how people cannot see past temporary decor and notice the salient sizes and features of a property. However, if that's the case, so be it. It's lovely to see the room changes on this channel - food for inspiration!
How can homeowners not see that incredible mess?! The kitchen needs to be expanded into that dining area.
Yes,100%!
I can never understand why homeowners don't paint the entry door. It's the first impression and should clean and fresh. In this case, the royal blue paint (and the matching planter in the front window sill) is chipped and faded. For very little expense and a couple of hours, that would have been such an improvement.
@@coolcpa3321 Wouldn't hurt to pressure-wash the sidewalk, either
This show is my new cleaning show. Helps me not go crazy during ye olde plague.
@@bernadette573 I read this in Bernadette Banner's voice because of your name. :p
Redecorating with what I already have during this pandemic
I like how elegant you describe our actual situation in the world. Lol
I would have bought it straight away. Did the people looking at the house before just have zero imagination? That house was already awesome and when you move in...none of those things will be left there.
I always think the same except when its absolutely cluttered its hard to see the room size
Yes it's shocking how little imagination people have....
I would have bought it too. People just have no imagination when looking at an occupied home. It’s lovely.
This was filmed around 2008 when people were apparently unimaginative when it came to houses 😂
In 2008 that was still quite a high price for a house when you could buy a 3 bed house for 250k.. The other issue is not always imagination but about time and money. Some people, especially with families may not have that much left after paying for solicitors, stamp duty, transporting furniture etc... And the money/time to decorate.
Underwhelmed with this one. They could have done so much more with this one. Guess it wasn’t in the sellers budget.
And the selling price was low - if they’d done more to other rooms we didn’t see it could have been nearer £500k at least - someone got a bargain - would be interesting to see it now in 2023
I would have opened up the fireplace and did a renovation of the kitchen.
The absent brother, who didn't help at all, will now step forward and want his half.
Yeah. She said right up front she didn’t want to keep living with him. He is probably pretty useless around the house.
Yep. Typical.
Absolutely!!
@@tonibauer2949 She wasn't much better- how scruffy, dirty and hoarder like! I don't understand why agents don't give them a good shake and tell them the facts of life.... Clear it out, tidy it up inside and out, paint and re carpet.
well that's life. She still needs to sell to even get her half.
there must be so much more to this house than what was shown, the front room, the brother's room and I think i heard something about a loft conversion, and what was the bathroom and kitchen like? Feels like only half a job done.
Not sure I would reference Jerry Springer as a selling point, either. 😂😂. Haha.
(Just kidding, Jerry)
Lord I wish someone had left me a house like this one
I know. Right?
It takes me exactly one minute to watch this show. See a quick before...then fast forward to the end result. Can’t stand it otherwise.
Smart, sadly the end wasn't worth it here, was it?
@@sg-vp2qg No, but that place could really be fantastic with some money and good taste.
such a lovely front hall! It was a nightmare wreck before…did the homeowners think people are shopping with imagination? NO, 90% of them have none and even comment on color of paint and the owners' furniture that puts them off! The real estate agent has to be very syraight with these type owners to get them to purge and paint!
It’s amazing that people want to sell their houses but think buyers are going to look past the dirt, grime, and lack of upkeep. They can’t understand why they’re not getting top-dollar. Absolutely clueless!
front room should be family room. Snooty Sophie is not always right. With so few rooms, you don't devote 2 to dining. Even the potential buyer points out right away that the room next to kitchen should be incorporated into a small kitchen/diner
The music room was the original dining room. The exterior front bay window is different than the interior bay of the music room. There is a front sitting room not shown in the show.
@@mapleleaf0 I was wondering about this. Because I was thinking she should have put the dining room table in that hallway room and made the room with the fireplace into the living/sitting room. But I wondered if there was another room. That house just seemed too big not to!
The bedroom is the best part. I would prefer the "music" room to have been the living room- there's room for more seating. The pass-thru
dining room could have a glass top table and several chairs.
Yeah, I found that odd. The "passageway" had seating for dining and so did the music room. Maybe they expected to do a lot of eating(?). 🤔😄
also blue carpet needed to go
I am guessing that what is now the family room was the original kitchen beside the dining room. There are technically 3 reception rooms the old music room faces the back garden. There will be a front reception room we did not see. When looking at the outside front of the house, the front room bay does not have the French windows, but when we see the outside of the rear of the property we do see them. The front and rear reception rooms are most likely of similar size.
I wonder if that may have been a butler’s pantry when it was built? Would have loved to see a floor plan of the place.
@@ceciliapreziose3783 Hideous blue carpet!
I always wonder about the other bedrooms and bathrooms.
They never show bathrooms. It makes me wonder if they are atrocious and is another reason the place doesn’t sell.
I was thinking the same thing -- and what happened to the kitchen? I would have made the music room into a living room. Loved the windows and floors.
@@theajohnston761 They had shown and done some bathrooms but only rarely.
No sign of their living room either - or the brother
They are probably pretty decent. But choose homes that only need de cluttering and a bit of redecorating. Things that are very easy and inexpensive to carry out. I love some of these older homes, like the one featured in this episode. ❤️😁
I would expand the kitchen into the family room. I wish we could see the kitchen? Where is the brother and his room?
The room off the kitchen should have been made the dining room and the bigger room where she put the table should have been the lounge. Keep all the colours neutral and box up all your clutter. Not difficult
Classic case of seller wanting more than buyers will pay. I can’t figure out how people couldn’t see what a great place this could be as it was. I’m thinking it was needing new roof in addition to kitchen and bathroom upgrades. To sell fast you have to discount for the things not being top notch or put the money into the property to make it truly turn key.
One of the issues with older properties is the dreaded composite tiled roof. If that’s on a home report survey it immediately knocks the cost of replacing it off what you can expect to sell it for
Please bring back Unsellables!
the Canadian version, please
The only time a house like this would be slow to sell would be 2008, in the financial crisis, when nothing sold fast. Today it would go for over a million, and very fast. I honestly don’t think decorating it made any difference at all.
That is the time frame of this show. It ran from 2008 to 2011.
The price is quoted as 2008, so that might be why! I would say it is at least 12 years old!
I love watching this show. It never ceases to amaze me how horrible of a job they do.
Imagine if they transformed the whole house how bad it could be...
"Yes let's put in a mantle piece to no fireplace 3 inches from a table with just a white wall where a fire should be, yes let's "
They really so sh*t work. DIYer level.
I marvel at how awful ppls homes are. Awful design. Ugly furniture... Etc.
Right. And I noticed the wavy edging lines like the painters didn't use painter's tape. And every wall hanging was just framed wallpaper with some of it not sticking all the way.
A magnificent home indeed. Beautiful bones. Making the rear reception room back into a dining room was a great idea. The family room was likely the original kitchen.
That’s a great house. For the price I’m shocked it hasn’t sold. Most people can overlook their stuff and see the value in that home. That family room was a joke. I’d actually prefer the piano there and enlarge the kitchen. The black lady was spot on with the same idea
Why they used carpet squares I'll never understand. They look like crap. Then framed wallpaper with cracks in it. Better off having a real professional help. What a mess.
I don’t think there’s money to put into more than superficial changes. Carpet squares was probably all she could afford.
@@Jen39x The wood floor would have been better to leave alone.
And the shelf brackets not lining up in the bedroom after pics was odd
After saying how she like the original wood floors Sophie turns around and convers them.
Agreed. I was not impressed with this episode AT ALL.
I can never understand why such large houses had such tiny kitchens.
I love this show so much!! Wish they were still making it.
This is a sale that requires the seller to let go of her father a second time.
I don't believe she is aware of that but if I we involved I would not be squaring of sections of a park but rather gently bring her awareness to her emotional heart. Dad will be hers forever and her memories do not require the house to enjoy. 🤗
I think you are right. There's so much emotion entangled in a home that your family lived in and then to inherit it adds a whole other layer. The strange use of rooms and furniture in odd places could also be left over from inheriting her father's belongings and having to deal with that can be a lot.
That was such a silly waste of time, playing with the blue string. I'd rather have seen another room r two. Did they have a back garden. What was on the corner behind the house?
What a missed opportunity. They didn't even hide the mantel screws. In fact, they seemed to highlight them. Good bedroom redo though. Too bad they didn't just paint the walls, clean, and leave it at that. Better a blank canvas than framed wallpaper!
I totally agree about the tacky framed wallpaper.
Why would anyone think they could sell a home in this condition. The potential with this is huge! The after isn't even close to what it should be. The dining room looks terrible. The "family room" looks crowded and useless. Too bad the kitchen is so tiny.
yes so i,m not the only one who hated what thay did
They should loose the dude. Then i wouldnt have to fast forward when he comes on
They did, when they went to do Canada and the USA episodes.
@@vaderladyl OMG they did episodes in Canada? What do I search to find those?
@@SageKayDee They go by several names. Search by "Abode" or by "Unsellables"(don't confuse it for "Unsellables UK"). I think the channel "Abode" has most of the episodes.
Here you see the fireplace, there is no hole. (Lol) It really draws the eye to where a fire could be.
Hilarious.
They've used that flowery wallpaper looking 'artwork' in every episode I've watched 🤣
Tons of amazing makeover shows out there, but not a lot that show simple, cheap and basic fixes that the average person could tackle.
Even though there were a lot of design mistakes made still showing how to calm down a house and create more cohesion on a tight budget.
Sometimes just moving things around that you already own. Not necessary to go out and spend a fortune on new stuff.
The power of the de clutter is something I need to apply to my house, as it has got way out of control.
What a beautiful home 💖 The after really opened it up and people Could see the potential for themselves. The original features were gorgeous, that internal door to the now family room was stunning! I would have done the family room and dining room different but they were lovely. I'm glad she liked her home again but do wonder what the brother was doing to help with the sale of the property 😕
I love Sofie’s black ruffle dress with the knee boots. It suits her. This was a lovely program. I love this show.
The fireplace and framed wallpaper 🤦♀️.. looks absolutely ridiculous
An improvement, but not enough - what would it have taken to put some dried flowers in the tall vase? Put some potted plants in the empty green flower box on the outside window sill? And, that "fire surround" is a sad joke - only pointing out the lack of any redeeming wall feature. Best left blank rather than that sorry attempt. Really think the house would have shown better stripped completely, and just painted, the floors done. Bad decor, this time around.
All in 3 days?
And the carpet squares... 😆
@@aubraehersel7720 They were anticipating that the buyer would refinish the wood floors. Better just to leave the floors bare, than waste money on carpet squares.
That fireplace without a fireplace looks ridiculous.
no the rooms are not being used propperly . the music room is a sitting room not not a dinning room
There is a front sitting room they didn't show us, the bay widow on front of house is different from the bay window in dining room
@@jbc1715 Precisely what I was about to say. The sitting room is likely the same size as the dining room. When doing up a dining room remember that in a family home it will most often be used for dinner, so needs to look warm and welcoming in the evening.
Properly & dining 🤣👍🙏
Gorgeous house, people always have their own ideas so best not to do too much
I would have made the room to the kitchen the dining room and the music room into the living room.
There is another sitting room they didn't show.
The only thing this house needs is a new coat of paint and furniture. It's ridiculous when people can't see all the positives in this property for a little paint. 🙄
Bad real estate agent basically. The real estate agent needs to have hard conversations with sellers and tell them that the house won’t sell unless it’s clean and organized. Real estate agent should’ve urge them to get a U-Haul and take half of their crap to storage. I sold real estate for over 30 years and sometimes had to have hard conversations with sellers about cleaning their house or attending to deferred maintenance items or pulling the weeds.
Most estate agents these days don’t do their job properly, they don’t know how to, they’ve had an easy ride for years so have no idea how to actually sell a house
They put carpet over that gorgeous flooring? Damn what a shame.
Used to live near Finchley Road underground station in the late ‘80s. Wonderful place to live. Lots of stores, great transportation.
I will now be looking behind weirdly positioned Pictures to see what is behind it😛love the mom’s tapestry good job!!! Hope she kept it in house
John Rennie's presence in the show is just a waste of time and a distraction. I fast forward thru all of his content. I never cease to be amazed at how people can just put their house on the market with it looking like a pile of s**t and are surprised that it didn't sell the first hour of the first day.
He must be a producer's pesky uncle.
I totally do the same!
I so agree!
I have learned some from him about selling houses though. It’s just that it’s the same info every time.
Agreed!!! Totally fast forward. Plus, what realtor would want to be made a fool of for this show?
I fast forward thru his realtor parts if they didn't have him on staff they'd be able to spend more on renovations. A gift from show
It can't be just these few rooms...... where are all the other rooms? we never get to see the whole house =/
They only show the rooms they will work on.
@@vaderladyl Yeah I get that, however I'm always curious to know what the rest of the rooms look like and why they are apparently not in need of a makeover. it's just slightly disappointing at times =/
@@pretzeldip7234 I noticed they did it mostly on the British season, which is this one, but were open to show other rooms on the next two seasons, the Canadian and the American
@@vaderladyl I'll have to check those out to then :)
@@pretzeldip7234 they probably don’t have the budget to Reno the entire house so they focus their budget in the areas that need it most. No point showcasing the bad if you can’t fix it haha
The dining room should have been a living room. Ugly carpet squares. 🤢🤮
There is a front living room they don't show. The inside bay window in the music room is different than the outside bay windows on the front of the house.
im bingeing... best show ever because the agent is like " your place is sotty and needs a bit of tidying up!" with an appropo "ewe" and "how disgusting!" but folks LIVE like that for real🤦🏽
Hate it when he gives the agent a bad time. 😠
We can't take anything with us. And, when we do depart, our kids will toss it. So, we may as well declutter and enjoy it ourselves! :)
I am sure I was the First Lady Estate Agent (negotiator) in 1983 and got people coming to me for buying house because I was truthful and sellers were told (before all these types of tv programmes) to tidy up and how to dress the house for sale. I built my business up from nothing and sold it for a really big profit by working hard and being truthful
Thank you! It always makes my day when you upload new episodes :-)
She got that house with her brother, but we never see hide-nor-hair of him. I can feel Lucy. It's hard to hold a family house, with a family member, when you are the only one doing any work on it. I hope the property sold and she got enough cash to go and get something she wanted (sans brother).
They couldn't even be bothered to clear some junk or pick up crap lying on the floor? So much time wasted on the little guy toddling around town and haranguing the agent. They put down more ugly blue carpet tiles? I guess there was nothing they could do with the small, old, cheap kitchen.
The buyer will probably extend the kitchen into the room where the kiddies table was set up, and the sofa area will become the formal dining area.
Why wasn't the music room the living room, it makes no sense not having the dining table close to the kitchen? strange arrangement!
English homes with all the rooms closed off with doors are so strange to Americans and I don’t mean today’s open concept crowds. I married an Englishman in 1978 and when we visited his family members that year, I continually got lost and disoriented trying to navigate through the houses. 😅
What a view . Should be the main Lounge in the home, and maximize that feature. I don't get why that wasn't done ...(??) What about just getting a Fireplace that is electric, and make it look like a lovely room .... just astounding how little thought is put into getting this home ready to sell.
The " family room " looks really more like a passageway ( still). I would have made that a butlers pantry, eat in area. Silly to try to make it a lounge area.
Does anyone know what goes on in the many rooms not shown on this show? Do they declutter and paint? Do they leave them "as is?" I always wonder about that. They must do something with the rooms not shown because having half a house mess wouldn't make sense to show potential buyers. Just wondering. If you know please comment here. Thank you so much!
One of the pix of front of the house showed a boarded up window.
@@bernadette573 I hadn't noticed that, thanks.
They only clean and declutter those rooms but it is not shown on camera. Only the rooms that are going to be worked on are shown.
@@vaderladyl thanks! I always wonder what is happening behind the scenes.
Notice how these shows only show us and redo 3 rooms.. so viewers have no idea what the rest of the house is like!!
You'd think ppl would take in tenants instead of stand around wringing their hands. It's London. unimaginative.
Comments are focused on other things, not even appreciating the fact that this nice show exists, that the makeover was so beautiful especially the bedroom. Overall it was such a great upgrade from the disjointed, cluttered space it was.
The US has the multiple listing service (MLS). Nearly all properties listed by agents are loaded into a database that can be accessed by the public and other realtors. That’s how a lot of people find houses they’re interested in. Does Britain have something like that?
No all we have is Zoopla.co.uk.
Yes, rightmove website does that.
The kitchen looked like it was 4 x 4. Why did we not get to see it all?
This was one of their least successful makeovers. The cheap fireplace mantel was awkward and pointless. The small and dated--looking table and chairs in the middle of a narrow room only made it look smaller. Even dressed-up properly, to think of paying the equivalent of $700K for a place like that just boggles my mind.
When you view a house you should forget any of the bad decor and focus on the location, the room sizes, etc. You should visualise it as an empty house. You don’t reject a house because it has an orange sitting room or a pink bedroom or a messy pile of books unless you’re devoid of any imagination.
The corridor-like kitchen and 'dining area' make this house undesirable. It needs a large dining kitchen.
Interesting that the offer she got was considerably lower than the asking price. Did the buyer factor in the costs of renovation ??
Agent answers correctly, but proves he doesn't have a real interest.
LOVE the hall tiles... would be a fabulous quilt!!!
The agency person is mean and judgamental. There's no need to say much of what she said in the way she said it. I hope Lucy got some money for putting up with the abuse.
I can’t even imagine what that house is worth now. Not sure why they bothered spending any money. What a great house, new owners can decorate how they like.
Trivial issues of decor. I bet the kitchen and bathroom had issues that couldn’t be fixed in 3 days for tv. We never even saw them.
If I hired a real estate agent I wouldn’t expect to do the work myself there is no way I would do the showings myself. Since when do agent’s don’t work after hours
I hear all the people commenting about 'why can't you see past the surface", etc., but presentation matters - it creates an impression and sets a stage that's hard to overcome. One thing I see in common between most of these properties is that they're dirty, unkempt, cluttered, messy, too personalized, and just visually unappealing. There's also the possible smell which is usually not good in houses that are not kept tidy and maintained. And who knows what maintenance issues they'll have with heating systems, the roof, foundation, holes in walls, rotted wood, etc. It just reeks of owners who neglected it and don't care. Keep in mind also, many people don't want to have to move into an expensive place and then spend thousands more redecorating.
I wanted to see the kitchen!
Remember 2008? 13 years ago.. simpler times..
I love Sophie, why doesn't she have any new shows? Where is she these days?
@@LeslieStroz 🤣
@@LeslieStroz did some more research and do believe you are correct. Thanks.
@@tonibauer2949 Wait, what was Leslie's reply? It's gone now. Do we know what happened to Sophie?
They stopped doing the show I think after Sophie got sick and had to go through a mastectomy surgery and then the 2008 economy collapse that came.
My issue with the backstory is that the girl and her brother inherited it. Was there a mortgage remaining? If not, what would be the difficulty in maintaining it? They moved into dad’s house thinking they’d save loads on rent.
Also, why not rent it out and maintain your own living spaces? I am thinking this show is a cheap makeover show that knows very little about real estate while pretending to do so. The primary problem is that homes like this are too segmented and offer no flow. This seems very common in English homes.
These kids wanted a platform to expedite their cash out on their father’s estate.
They were grieving.
I enjoy this show so much look forward to more!
😮wow! That is a beautiful transformation.
I noticed that they pretend there is no kitchen - just wondering why.
No pretending - they just do 3 rooms on each show.
The kitchen must be horrible
You can see the kitchen at the end of the 'hallway/family room'. It doesn't look too bad, but was clearly updated with circa 1980 'modern' cabinetry.
she paints everything green
Her absolute favorite paint color is white, though.
What a gorgeous entry way and windows! But Did they put cheap carpet squares over a wood floor? The 2 tiny pictures behind a big couch in a narrow room is really odd. I would get housemates before I ever sold. Good luck buying now in 2024 .
I think the music room should of been the family/living room, its French doors make it look that way
I totally agree, it would have looked lovely with a chair and a small table by the French doors.
With 90 viewings, it's not the price or the neighborhood. It's a wonderful house. Just needs a little TLC.
When I see the photos of a property and one of the first is a picture of the piano I just click past. I also don't want to see little hearts hanging from doorknobs. Just show the darn house. If I don't see photos of the structure it makes me think something is wrong.
I can’t believe people don’t look at the bones of a house instead of the decore. Location, location, location!
I dont understand making that one beautiful room a dining room, seems such a waste. I wonder if the original fireplace is there still behind that wall, if so such a shame fo cover it up.
That was originally the dining room. there is a sitting room to the front of the property that we did not see. The front bay does not match the interior on the dining room, but the rear one does.
Anyone who can't see the beauty in that house doesn't deserve to live there. I would have used that "hallway" for a study. I didn't like the dining area there, too dark and pokey. Honestly, unless there were structural issues I can't understand how it wasn't snapped up.
What makeover?
No makeover, only staging.
A half a million dollars for that house?! The world is crazy.
7 miles from London.
Where’s the lazy brother? Lucy is doing all the hard work, but I’m sure he still expects 50% of the sale.
Buyers ARE put off by clutter, pets, smoke odors, dirt, repairs not finished, not upkeeping of yard and house.
Put yourself in a buyers place. Think, would I want all this work? Probably not.
We saw many houses not ready for selling, and passed them- - down.
Found one that looked just right. Then found out 1 year later it was a lemon. Too late now.
Sooo, really look closely at the condition of everything! Not just how neat the house is.please.
Why not get 2 tenants to help with bills? Crazy to give up that big house. Lazy.
She points out the beautiful wood floors and then puts cheap carpet tiles over top of it.
Instead of covering the floor with cheap carpet squares, Sophie should have mowed, and trimmed the front yard.
That house now goes for over £1m, bet she regrets selling
This house is going to be someone's REAL FIND. Just needs some serious cleaning and decluttering.
