  • Participating in Plastic Free July has me nervous about buying meat and cheese without plastic. I went to Kroger with my own reusable ziploc bags (linked below) to see if they would put my meat and cheese in it.

Hiya - thanks for splashing by. I'm Ariel Sahar and I'm new to the low waste movement. My current goal isn't to be zero waste, but I do strive to lower my impact on this planet. I hope to inspire others to make healthy choices for their bodies and the planet.

Would you try buying meat or cheese plastic free?

You raise an interesting question. I raise most of my meat, however when I do buy meat I buy it from a butcher and he uses butcher paper to wrap your chosen cut of meat and I have never thought about it because it just comes in butcher paper. I am wondering if your butcher or meat person has access to butcher paper and instead of putting your meat in plastic, he would wrap it in paper, maybe it would be less awkward for you . Just a thought. It wouldn't get rid of the waste, because butcher paper is one time use, but it isn't plastic, and I can burn my butcher paper, hm, it might even be compostable (sp)if shredded. I suck at low waste, but I would like to try. I like your video because I am not vegetarian and I feel all these types of videos are aimed at vegans and vegetarians and I wanted to see how others buy dairy and meat because a person can want to reduce their waste and be more responsible and sustainable without being a vegetarian or vegan.

@@cashfamilyfarm9637 That's a good point. Sometimes they do wrap it in the butcher's paper - usually they put it in plastic first, but maybe I could ask to not use that. Low waste is hard, but making small changes can make a big difference! Thanks for splashing by!

This video is so relatable - nearly all zero waste youtubers are vegan and super preachy or smug about it. It nearly turned me away from zero waste all together.

Dang, i saw a video saying to not be mean to people about going zero waste, or it'll turn people away

Really glad you made this video. Im not vegan and I find it really hard zero waste shop when purchasing meat. Me and my husband don't eat a ton of meat to begin with but we still eat it. and EVERYONE who is zero waste is also vegan or vegetarian which is really honestly super easy to be zero waste.

I was thinking about trying to do a zero waste grocery shopping. And yeah I could totally see doing that at the Deli and Meat section

I love the honesty about the process and if you would do it again. I believe the concept of "perfection" inhibits a lot of people from engaging in progress. I really appreciate the reality of the practice versus slick production and the "it's so easy" ( because I make a kajillion dollars) perspective which is often presented. Great job being you!

Most grocery stores take the meat out of the plastic packaging and give it to you in your container, is it possible to know for sure that kroger butchers their own meat?

Glad your grocery trip went well. I like that you used those thick plastic bags for your meat. I've used my own plastic container, the lunch box kinds, but I feel like your bags are less conspicuous. I feel like my plastic container would confuse cashiers a little bit, and thus, making me feel awkward as well, lol.

    • @NaturallyMermaid
      @NaturallyMermaid  5 років тому

Exactly! The cashiers didn't even look twice at the bags when scanning. Way more inconspicuous! Good luck!!

When ever i go to the deli they argue with me, saying it is against health guidelines 😭 And i have to fight about tear weight at Winco constantly. I wish it would go smoothly like your trip when i shop!

I love seeing these videos, its truly inspirational! And as a reminder that zero waste is about minimizing what goes to landfill! For example, if you have plastic containers or plastic reusable water bottle already, use it! It is made to last so you made not be tossing it soon. And when it no longer serves its purpose it could possibly be recycled. No need to swap if in perfect condition!

    • @NaturallyMermaid

Truth! Not all plastic is evil, we should just try to avoid bringing new and unnecessary items into our homes. 💛

Amazing wow not many people look for non vegan foods in normal grocery stores so thank you because it is so useful but I noticed when you were looking for the lemons that you probably re picked your lemon because it has scratches on or something so next time just take the odd fruits and veg otherwise it goes to food waste and supermarkets will throw it away but it is perfectly fine where you eat it

Awesome video! Was able to get meat plastic-free too at a regular grocery store but it was pre-COVID. Now they don’t allow customers to bring their own containers. Boo.

I love the vlog style video!!! I've been super scared to vlog at the grocery store haha! I always feel like a pain asking if I can bring my own containers for things but usually it's not a big deal. 👍But I still feel uncomfortable and awkward! I would imagine they don't get a lot of people bringing their own containers at the deli counter. That was smart to bring a similar style bag! My biggest challenge was 4th of July and not being prepared... I didn't think I was going to eat anything and they bought something specifically vegan for me. So I had to indulge haha! A big win for me was just meal prepping more!

I was so scared, too! But they really didn't care lol. I'm not sure how often I'll do it because it was so nerve wracking, but good to know that it can be done. 🤗

I wonder if using grocery paper cut to size would work for wrapping meat up, since butcher's paper is waxed on one side and to my knowledge not recycleable.

I tried to see if an employee at a grocery store deli counter would just drop a pound of lunch meat into my own plastic container, and she said no because it would go against health inspector regulations. I wish I had tried at at a different store, because I use my own containers in the bulk section of this one and don’t want it to be an issue. Maybe if I used bags like yours it would go better. Do you just wash with bleach so you can continue to reuse them? Shame we’re made to feel like we’re doing something illegal in our efforts to be more sustainable.

Its probably due to the pandemic, they aren't allowing bringing your own grocery bags right now ether

Is that bag at 1:54 waterproof? I live in a city that rains a lot and I ride motorcycle everywhere. Do you have any idea, recommendation, or video about good waterproof, washable, reusable grocery bags?
Also, thanks very much for posting this video. This is very informative. I'm a bit nervous about asking the butcher to put it in my own container, but after seeing this, I think I will probably give it a try.

    • @NaturallyMermaid

The bag is water proof! I think I got it from Sprouts. I haven't tried getting plastic-free meat since Covid started, but some grocers may allow it. Doesn't hurt to ask!

Some years ago I got really into the Tightwad Gazette books. That woman could squeeze a dollar! But even she said that you could never safely reuse any plastic bag that had held meat--whether cooked, smoked, or raw-- or raw seafood, and only dairy things a few times. So taking a plastic bag to hold your meat and seafood isn't really changing anything because once you get home if you put it in glass or butcher paper you still have a plastic bag to reuse with questionable safety, you store it in your freezer in that bag and once again, reuse with questionable food safety, or you toss it out which is the same as the grocery's plastic. It also means you must buy from the far pricier meat or seafood case. In short, I like your enthusiasm but I don't think it will work.
