How To Breed Hillstream Loaches

- Hillstream loaches are entertaining little oddball fish that will breed readily in many home aquariums, especially river tank biotopes.
In this video, I discuss my experiences breeding reticulated hillstream loaches (sewellia lineolata) in my 40 gallon river tank. After a slow start with minimal spawning activity in the first year, my hillstream loaches really took off, spawning almost daily and producing 20+ fry in year two. Many of these fry are well on their way to adulthood and have started really competing for prized algae wafers with their (still much larger) parents.
Hope you enjoy the video and feel free to comment below!
Best Hillstream loach video I have seen. All information, no fluff!
Thank you. I have hillstream loaches mixed with panda gara. This was a very informative video.
Thank you very much for your insight and this video. I just purchased a group of 8 Hillstream Loaches yesturday , you don't see them at the stores very often. Watched a few youtube videos and they really caught my interest, and amazingly a local store had just got them in their newest shipment so I bought 8 . Thank again for this video very helpful.
Glad it was helpful, enjoy them! 8's a nice big shoal to start with
Thanks for sharing your observations and experience. Very useful.
Outstanding teaching 👍🏾😊
Just noticed our first fry today. I have a 70 Litre tank with 3 Hillstream Loach. So far I can see just one fry, but plenty of places for them to hide, so maybe a few more surprises to come.
very informative video, now i want to buy some.
Another interesting video 👍 I like your work 🤩 May I please use part of your video for one of my next tutorial ? Thanks
Marc
This is a wonderful video, thank so much for sharing your in depth knowledge of the needs and behaviors of these marvelous fish
You really laid out the truth with the fish being very underfed when they are sold.. I've learned from other vids that not KEEPing them fed is a main cause of failure, as they can easily go neglected in tanks with inadequate algae or other fish that outcompete them. Those vids recommend a grazing fish food like the ones made by Repashy to get HS loaches into happy breeding condition!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed!
Great video. Awesome information thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you 🤗
Nice vid. I am looking forward to my loach spawning.
I love your voice :)
Great vid. Very informative. Do you think they’ll breed in a tank with guppies? I also have a couple Bristlenose plecos in the tank that I think it’s best to move them.
Thanks. Guppies are likely to eat at least some of the very small fry, so the fry survival rate will depend to some extent on the layout of the tank and the amount of cover and hiding places in the substrate.
@@kissaquaticsystems5525 oh wow, so they’re that small. Thanks again, I’ll just separate them in a seasoned tank to be by themselves
Que tiempo viven estos peces??
We bought 3 of them. 2 from one store, they look alike and 1 from a different store that looks very similar but its definitely a different sub species. The one oddball i havent seen eat at all. Its been about 5 days. Im getting worried. Tried sinking veggie pellets, sinking carnivore pellets, flake food sunk to the bottom, broken brine and frozen daphnea. Dont know if its been eating any biofilm but even so, there isnt much as its a new tank. Any ideas for what to try and feed it?
I'd give them time to settle in. They will eat almost anything if hungry enough (vegetarian based foods are better). There are several different species, most commonly sold are reticulated and spotted sewellias.
@kissaquaticsystems5525 my fingers are crossed. Still havent seen that one eat but i also cant watch the tank 24/7.. unfortunately lol ty for your replies!!!
I believe I see some butterfly hillstream loaches in your tank. Have you had any success with those breeding? It’s a Beaufortia species and there’s not much breeding information out there.
You have a good eye! I have not unfortunately.
@@kissaquaticsystems5525 Thanks for the reply. It’s too bad the butterfly’s won’t breed in tanks, but they sure are cool fish.
@@kellyroach76. They will breed in tanks. Its YT videos on it.
What’s your opinion on keeping whiteclouds with hillstream loach
Should work, both are coldwater fish that like flow.
Do you need heavy flow for breeding or even just existing.
In my tank they certainly enjoy the strong flow areas and orient themselves on rocks against it. Also when they spawn in the water column they do seek out the highest flow currents. However for just living it's not really the flow but rather the good dissolved oxygen content that's important.
@@kissaquaticsystems5525 thank you.
What size tank do you recommend to try and breed hillstream loaches?
I keep mine in a standard 40 gallon breeder (I love that tank footprint in general) and they breed well and seem happy. Not sure what the minimum would be, but these little guys can be pretty active so I wouldn't go too small.
@@kissaquaticsystems5525 Thanks for the response. I've just set up a 25 gallon. I've made a great big rock pile. Hopefully they'll love it. Thank you for the response
What foods do you feed them also have you ever kept any with goldfish?
I feed algae wafers, fresh spinach, and occasionally other fresh veggies, though they spend most of their time grazing off of algae in the tank. I actually do have a few in another tank with a goldfish, they generally ignore each other. Goldfish do spend a lot of time sifting through substrate so not sure very many loach eggs/fry would survive but otherwise adults should be fine.
Can they be grouped with cherry shrimp and or khuli loaches? Also heavy planted?
Yes, I have had a few for years in my heavily planted 75 gal with much larger dojo loaches, no problems.
No. Kuhli loaches need a heated tank. Hillstream/butterfly loaches need cooler water aka non heated tanks.
Hi.. i like to have lots of fish meds on hand. What meds are safe with hillstreams? I know i read maracyn and maracyn 2 is safe also prazi. But what else is safe for them? I recently got hillstreams and corys. Never had fish that are sensitive to meds before, so please.. school me😊
I haven't had to medicate mine before so can't say specifically. Prazi in its recommended dose is safe for just about anything. Antibiotics are harder on fish/your system in general.
@kissaquaticsystems5525 yeah especially gram negative meds.. kills the bb so fast! I'll continue to do more research. Ty 😁
Will different type of loaches breed with each other?
I have not seen it happen
My favorite fish I've ever had! Cool video! Do you ever sale them? I'd definitely be interested!
Thanks! I don't sell though, sry
Could you keep galaxy rasboras with them?
Should be fine, they'll probably just ignore each other. The rasboras may hunt hillstream fry though.
