- UMD Video is such a fascinating format to me. Full-length DVD-quality movies in your pocket, at a time when smartphones either didn't exist or hadn't caught on yet. I dunno what it is about UMD Video that makes it so appealing to me, probably just the novelty of tiny discs or having a handheld use discs at all, but I just feel it doesn't get enough love.
I hope you enjoy this video as I put a lot of effort into it and it's one of my best videos yet.

We had DVD/UMD combo packs too (I recall having some when working in Virgin Megastore at the time). No fancy custom cases, it was just the two separate skus bundled together with shrinkwrap. They didn't last long.
We'd still like to see you try.
Editor's note: Another reason why UMD Video failed was because PSP could also play video files like MP4, so it was common for people to buy DVDs and rip them to their PSP instead of buying the movie on UMD. And ironically there was even a benefit to watching MP4s instead of UMDs, since not needing to use the disc drive equals better battery life.
This line was originally in the script but there was too much background noise so I cut it. I kinda regret that actually.
When you buy DVD and rip it to MP4 format you're losing lots of functions such as chapters, different camera views for concerts. There was a guide in the late PSPISOS forum any saved this web page or know who did it? I had it on one of my HDDs but sadly drive defected.
The UMD was such a unique format, really fun to collect for too!

This is probably the best and most accurate info video about umds. Great stuff. For me, the main failing point was the price point of the umd. Like you said as well, people would pick the dvd because no features and paying same price.

Very interesting video! I had the PSP growing up, but at the time had no idea they released movies on it. My long hours on the bus/ car would've been spent so much better. I actually looked up if anyone had made any comprehensive videos on UMD after binging some Techmoan myself!

It is kind of unfortunate that UMD video failed but at least it was league's better than GBA video with its notoriously bad picture and audio quality
I like the umds . I'm a minimalist. So some days I don't touch my TV or stereo. I break out psp and watch movies play games then break out my memory card with my play list and have an awesome bday 😁😀
Used to spend my pocket money on psp games and movies all the time.
I'm so sad I was a kid/teen in a third world country during the PSP heyday. My cousin had one when we were kids and then I bought one off a guy from school in HS, but man had I been an adult with money and access to UMD and better accessories the PSP would've been my ultimate media machine! From movies to music to games 😭 I still have that PSP. When my cousin passed away I wanted to inherit his old PSP stuff as a memento from our childhood but never knew how to ask my aunt about it :/

I still think the UMD format is rather good and had a lot of potential! I still swear by the PSP even today, to the point where I even imported a Japanese Tom & Jerry UMD before going to South Africa in 2016, and I overall prefer physical media to digital downloads! Sony really should’ve, as a way of boosting UMD Video/Music sales, released a few portable TVs that could play said discs! Would’ve been great to, even if my PSP broke, be able to pop in a Little Britain UMD after watching The Simpsons on Channel 4!
I agree that releasing devices other than the PSP that could play UMD Video would've significantly helped sales and help it appeal to more than just PSP gamers. Especially if those devices were affordable.
@@ericbazinga not to mention we could do with widespread portable TVs with digital terrestrial tuners, especially as not everyone can afford cellular plans with big data allowances! I actually recently picked up Chicken Run on UMD after seeing it at the cinema via the Vue cinema chain’s rerelease!
Which Tom and jerry umd did you get? I have one of them too. The cover of Tom playing piano with Jerry. There’s like 6 or 7 Japanese Tom and Jerry umd’s.

I ordered the piano one at the same time, alongside the then-new Digimon game for the PlayStation Vita, but they told me after that the piano one had sold out. They offered me either a refund or something similar in price, so I asked them to replace it with a 24 card case for 3DS games.
I had like 20 umd movies back in the day, it made those 2 hour train rides back in 2007 pass super quick. I must have watched steamboy and cowboy bebop the movie a few hundred times.
But on a side note umd movies we’re really popular initially that it caught sony by surprise.
As for battery life, it wasn’t too bad I usually carried a spare charged battery in my bag just in case. Secondly pro duo cards were crazy expensive back then so putting more then 1 video on it you had to destroy the video quality for it to fit.
I remember a 512mb Sony pro duo costing $499 Australian.

Umd's are great as they are both portable and durable. The disc is protected by the plastic cover, unlike dvd's.

I watched Akira and Advent Children on UMD both in Japanese as I didn't know how to access the 'DVD' menu to select spoken languages and the default for both was Japanese with English subtitles. In the end that was a good thing as the more authentic Japanese dubs are better. Great video! I liked the shot of the store shelves full of UMD films, I have never seen that many in person.
Having grown up with a PSP I can understand. I even had a few umds of some films though not many just AVP and Fantastic 4 but it was in alot of ways revolutionary for the time to be able to watch movies on the go. Nowadays as you said it's more a novelty than anything plus even back when the format was popular it was just easier to rip your DVD and put it on there saving battery life.
Though I still recommend picking up a few if you can get them cheap like the Sam Raimi Spider-Man Trilogy.

It was such a buzz seeing these at airports as a kid. I was a hard sell back then but damn I was close to buying Casino Royale on UMD.
Now that I think of it, these would be great for flights. But ideally they should've all been region free in that case. Wouldn't want to be visiting England and finding out your new UMD movie doesn't work in your American PSP

The region code is a small globe on the case 1 is usa/can 2 is eu/uk 4 is Australia/NZ same as a dvd region code identifier
I used custom firmware to play UMD movies not released in the US or are way too expensive on resale. i.e. Reservoir Dogs and Scarface. There's a couple of ROM dumps of UMD movies online

I am curious with one thing. Isn't mini-DVD compatible with PSP? Since old Playstation devices used the DVD format for games, I am curious if a mini-DVD disc with a UMD case could work.
UMDs are smaller than mini-DVDs, mini-DVDs just wouldn't fit

One weird thing that I ran intro (which I don't know if this just my PSP or something else) But I brought the First SpongeBob Movie on the PSP (Despite I have it on my phone and on DVD but it was mainly for collector snice I collect alot of SpongeBob home video releases anyways) It says on box "Region 1" but however when I try to watch it on my PSP it says "This Disc cannot be Started, The Region code is not correct" I really hope my PSP is actually Region 1, Is there a way to change the PSP region code on any PSPs cause I own the PSP 1000.

No. I use "AnyMP4 Video Converter" but it's a bit of hit and miss with the output files. You need to convert them and test them on the PSP. A majority of the time they work but sometimes the converted files don't. When they do the aspect ratio is sometimes off.
