I got the 3/8 stubby a few weeks ago for automotive use. Amazing tool! Just love how compact and powerful it is. I love using it so much, I'm walking around the house looking for something to fix. LOL!
I hear you. Every time I bought a new tool I always try to find something to fix and sometimes I even fix something that didn't require fixing just to use the new tool. I think I have a tool addiction. My wife always say "What! you buy another tool?" and I said "No, just a new toy".
Isaac D that’s what I figured. I have noticed some finish damage on sockets before and that was just using the 1/4” hex impact driver with a socket attachment.
Your tool reviews are great because they involve actual use by someone with a lot of experience. The tool worked well in this video but it had some problems when using an extension. Special rigid extensions are available for impact tools and they might help you get the job done a little faster.
Left Handed Archer no it dosent, I use chrome sockets with 3/8 impact stubby all the time. It makes no difference at all, some impact socket sets sit very loose on the tool. Chrome sockets fit tight and right
@@dredaypoop7944 Chrome sockets are too hard for impact use, you will be wearing out the anvil inside the tool a lot faster than if using the correct sockets. Chrome sockets have also been known to shatter under impact too, bad enough to cause injury

I should have my 3/8 stubby next Monday when the Cornwell guy comes back. I should've had it this Monday, but it just shipped that day. Cornwell had a promo going on for the new m12 stuff. I picked up a m12 1/4 ratchet with a free battery. and then the 3/8. stubby kit I haven't even been able to use the ratchet yet because Tuesday I got sent home early from work because they were going to close the highway due to flooding.
57 thumbs down? what?? This is a meaningful, practical review, not just endlessly driving bolts in and out in areas with unrestricted access. What would have been REALLY handy for me - being selfish - would have been showing a non-compact wrench trying to reach those tight spaces as well, to get some idea of how often you'd have to resort to manual methods. Great video though, really helpful.

Good video. Have you tried using the 4Ah battery? It may give you the torque needed for removing those reluctant fasteners. Some cordless tools don't produce max power when using the compact battery.
Bought this to help tear down the front and rear suspension to install some lowering springs on my car and it worked like a DREAM. I only had to use the 2Ah battery and still had 2bars left at the end of the job. Would highly recommend!

I'm 54yrs old & just switched to Milwaukee Tools from DeWalt. I really like Milwaukee Tools innovativeness & thinking outside the box. I like their backpack vacuum, cordless soldering iron & cordless heat gun too I'd like for Christmas :-) Subscribed just now. Please do more videos like this.
I know that engine had it in my 95 xle gold trim Camry then yrs later I had a 2000 Lexus es300. Loved that engine had 248,650 and 206,785 before I sold it this summer. Ran flawlessly
I bought this tool a while back and it’s absolutely my favourite tool in my box I had to replace it once though as the circuit board failed although I’ve never dropped it or gotten it wet. Not sure if this is a common problem. Milwaukee gave me a brand new replacement and so far so good. I’m very happy with it as it has amazing power and comfort for everyday automotive use.
Its the only tool i keep in my automotive bag. I have drowned it in trans fluid, oil, and coolant. I have dropped it and left it out in the rain. The head is a tiny bit on the big side but it makes up for it in power. Worth every cent I spent on it. ($100 for tool, $50 for 8-22mm impact socket set, $60 for 6.0 battery, charger, and bag. All picked up locally from FB marketplace)
I have 3/8s and I run a 6.0AH battery and i pulled the cab off a 2012 chevy duramax and did headgaskets on it from start to finish the only bolts I didn't use it on was the headbolts that I broke loose then ran the headbolts out with it amazing gun

I find that running the 3mah larger 12v batteries gives you the whack to get those bigger bolts out. The same is true for the cordless ratchets. More battery= more woopow! Good video ive yet to add this tool to my milwaukee collection but its next on the list!
@@HowtoAutomotive it’s a pretty large difference. There’s a large testing channel on UA-cam that showed this impact breaking away 475ft/lb after about 10 seconds with the 6.0 battery
Man, Awesome review for a guy like me wondering if this tool can be used to work on my car at home, specifically for doing a break job. I had concerns about the battery life being a 12v and for a home gamer it clearly has more than enough. I was really torn between this guy and the 18v version but this one was also much smaller and lighter so I was really hoping it would be a good choice and from your video it was. I really appreciate this style review because you show it in an actual real world work flow it it seems to perform admirably.
All of the m12 "serious" tools such as the impact driver/drill or hacksaw/ impact stubby will literally drain the 2.0 battery under heavy load in a couple of extended uses. I cant speak for the larger cell battery with it but I would say it's almost a must. Personally I have a ton of m12 batteries and I don't mind swapping but out in the field again larger ah batteries

Great stuff as always. However one thing that would make a big difference in some of the fastners it struggled with is using IMPACT sockets. The thickness of impact sockets does make in difference. Using chrome vs impact you are not going to get as much grunt from the tool. Love the channel just giving my two cents. Keep up the good work
All my battery tools are Makita but unfortunately Makita doesn’t make this kind of small impact. I need one for engine bay work and all the 18V are too big and clumsy. This with the 2Ah battery looks compact enough for the job. Can’t wait to get my hands on one of these.
It’s an amazing tool! I would recommend upgrading to the 2.5 amp hour High Output battery. It’s the same size as the 2.0 but with a little bit more amperage for more power.

Wow, all that on one battery. I was looking at one of these at my local tool place. I should have grabbed it. Really like the 10 ft lb tightening setting. Didn't know at the time that was there.
You should try using impact extension and sockets. I don't know the science behind it but sometimes it will take stuff out that a chrome sockets and extensions won't.
I would have liked to see you try the 4.0 battery on the bolts you couldn't break free with the 2.0 battery. Often times the 4.0 will provide more power.
Awesome video. I really like the stubby impact and I recently bought the 1/2 inch m12 ratchet. Although in a way I wish that I would have bought an impact like this first I do think the m12 ratchet is the safer of tools to use and a bit more balanced. For example if you forget to set that impact on mode 4 and shoot a bolt right through a plastic sensor housing or whatever. I noticed you had the m12 ratchet on the side of the car as well. I plan to just have the whole collection and this stubby 3/8 might be next. I'm surprised at the power as well.

Great review. I just got the m18 mid torque 1/2". This is next on the list to replace my old m18 3/8" impact. 250ftlbs is pretty amazing for this size of tool.
@@meanodustino9563 I have found it does 80% of what my 1/2" air gun will do. I like being able to work without hooking up to air. One thing I will say is it's really loud, hurts my ears.

As others said you are not using the right sockets or extensions for an impact driver. Use impact rated stuff and it will work much better. None the less it was a great video.

I picked this up but also have the same size cordless ratchet. Would you recommend I switch the 3/8 impact wrench to the 1/2? If so what benefit would come of it since I'm seeing they both have the same power. I'm going super lightweight and compact with my setup. So my main idea was to go strictly ratchet and if need be use the impact wrench to break loose any fastener the ratchet would initially have trouble breaking. a breaker bar for anything the impact can't handle. Also would you recommend getting just impact sockets or not a good idea? I have regular chrome sockets but I'm in the process of building a whole new set that I'll be using for mobile work. I want to travel light and leave the specialty tools in my vehicle until called upon. So it's a special setup with efficiency and as effortless as possible. I don't want to be dragging around 2 sets of metric sockets in a big heavy toolbag. If anything a secondary set will be in my vehicle. What do you think about my setup idea? Any ideas or problems I might face with doing this?
Ricardo think for yourself if your actually doing mobile mechanic work then you should have at least a spec of common sense and the ability to think for yourself.. they say there's no such thing as a stupid question but I could see you regularly receiving a stupid answer back.... SMH
3/8 has a wider range of sockets personally, the only time I need 1/2 inch if your doing suspension or subframe work which will require more horse power than 250ft lbs and I'd rather use air at that point
Which would you prefer in your road side kit? The 3/8 or 1/2? Id be dealing with vehicles with mostly 90 at 19mm so I know it can do it. I have my father's 1/2 high torque at home so that would take care of the big items. I also have both 3/8 and 1/2 impact sockets.
Would you rather have this than the 18v 3/8? I have the matco 20v 3/8 I had thier 16v 3/8 but was too weak I like my 20v but this little tool looks nice
What about a 3/8 with a 1/2 step up adapter? Difference? I'm contemplating on the 3/8 for minor jeep repair, ball joints, control arms for a DIY home repairs.
@@jat-justamaturetech-philpj8285 no. I had the 3/8. Was not worth it. I use the 1/2 inch for everything. If I need 3/8 sockets I just use the converter and turn the torque down. You don't regret it.

Nice review, wish u tried the 4ah battery on the crank, cam bolts. I've noticed that on the 3/8 fuel wrench the 4.0 battery seems to make it sound faster/more powerful. The 2.0 seems to be a little less power. Nice review overall , I'm still waiting for my stubbys to show up!!! Hopefully today haha
@@HowtoAutomotive I ment ratchet, not wrench, 2557. I noticed a difference, even free spin sound. Keep the reviews coming, tq wrench specs of that stubby would be a cool video. Like I know with my 2767, on big rig lug nuts, once nut touches down, I impact it for 3 sec and it puts them around 470-480ftlb on 3 setting. Just a idea for video if u have the time to see what that stubby is running them down to on settings 2 or 3

Have you seen a chrome socket violently destruct? They send pieces flying everywhere, be careful.

Maybe using impact rated sockets, Allen's, and extensions would make a difference. There is a reason why they make them in impact rated versions.
Make a huge different if you use impact socket and extension
Also use XC 4.0 or XC 6.0

in order to remove the heavier-duty bolts just install the heavier-duty battery that came with your kit and they'll come out much easier

Good video I just got my little 3/8 stubby today and I have a 82 Chevy 1 ton truck and I went out there and it took the lug nuts off no problem

Anyone know if the anvils can be swapped between 1/2 & 3/8?
Yes. Haven't done it myself but the only difference between the two is just the anvil.
Great video. I use impact stubby and swivel sockets, you get less torque loss than chrome sockets.

Harbor Freight impact or Tekton from amazon. Cheap and work great.

Awesome video. I really like the stubby impact and I recently bought the 1/2 inch m12 ratchet. Although in a way I wish that I would have bought an impact like this first I do think the m12 ratchet is the safer of tools to use and a bit more balanced. For example if you forget to set that impact on mode 4 and shoot a bolt right through a plastic sensor housing or whatever. I noticed you had the m12 ratchet on the side of the car as well. I plan to just have the whole collection and this stubby 3/8 might be next. I'm surprised at the power as well.

You can’t use chrome extensions on impacts it robs the power wayyyyy more than impact rated extentions
Great job on showing the use of new m12 fuel stubby 3/8 impact in real situations. Could you do as size comparison between the current m18 compact fuel impact wrench and the new m12 stubby impact?

Great review. I just got the m18 mid torque 1/2". This is next on the list to replace my old m18 3/8" impact. 250ftlbs is pretty amazing for this size of tool.

Everyone like the mid torque but I don’t. I find it struggles Alot and really its not much stronger than my 1/2” compact. Maybe I have a dud?
@@meanodustino9563 I have found it does 80% of what my 1/2" air gun will do. I like being able to work without hooking up to air. One thing I will say is it's really loud, hurts my ears.
The best review of the tool yet but should jave used the bigger battery gives you more power for full break away torque

I have quite a few Milwaukee tools due to your reviews, all of which have been purchased for me as gifts, due to the work I have performed on there vehicles.
3/8 and 1/2 are only the head different, but 1/2 can use adapter to 3/8, but you won't use 3/8 with 1/2 adapter, and is bigger than 21mm have 3/8 ?
As others said you are not using the right sockets or extensions for an impact driver. Use impact rated stuff and it will work much better. None the less it was a great video.

I picked this up but also have the same size cordless ratchet. Would you recommend I switch the 3/8 impact wrench to the 1/2? If so what benefit would come of it since I'm seeing they both have the same power. I'm going super lightweight and compact with my setup. So my main idea was to go strictly ratchet and if need be use the impact wrench to break loose any fastener the ratchet would initially have trouble breaking. a breaker bar for anything the impact can't handle. Also would you recommend getting just impact sockets or not a good idea? I have regular chrome sockets but I'm in the process of building a whole new set that I'll be using for mobile work. I want to travel light and leave the specialty tools in my vehicle until called upon. So it's a special setup with efficiency and as effortless as possible. I don't want to be dragging around 2 sets of metric sockets in a big heavy toolbag. If anything a secondary set will be in my vehicle. What do you think about my setup idea? Any ideas or problems I might face with doing this?
Ricardo think for yourself if your actually doing mobile mechanic work then you should have at least a spec of common sense and the ability to think for yourself.. they say there's no such thing as a stupid question but I could see you regularly receiving a stupid answer back.... SMH

I bought the big battery for mine and power took a significant jump from the compact batt!! This thing is an ass kicker.

Yeah the battery and sockets make a difference. This is an amazing tool.
Loctite! Turns 50 ft lbs torque on a bolt into 250+ breakaway torque.
That's 1 reason why he could not break some bolts loose with the impact.

Ive used DeWalt tools for years, but im thinking about trying this impact out and their cordless ratchet.
Andrew M Dewalt makes nice tools but I think you’ll be very impressed with the Milwaukee.

Darren Farrell I like 3/8 only because I have more 3/8 socket options.
3/8 has a wider range of sockets personally, the only time I need 1/2 inch if your doing suspension or subframe work which will require more horse power than 250ft lbs and I'd rather use air at that point
If your going to go half inch go with the half inch full size mid torque.

Which would you prefer in your road side kit? The 3/8 or 1/2? Id be dealing with vehicles with mostly 90 at 19mm so I know it can do it. I have my father's 1/2 high torque at home so that would take care of the big items. I also have both 3/8 and 1/2 impact sockets.

I think the best version for us mechanics is to get the 1/2" stubby with a 3/8 step down adapter. Best of both worlds.
What about a 3/8 with a 1/2 step up adapter? Difference?
I'm contemplating on the 3/8 for minor jeep repair, ball joints, control arms for a DIY home repairs.
@@jat-justamaturetech-philpj8285 no. I had the 3/8. Was not worth it. I use the 1/2 inch for everything. If I need 3/8 sockets I just use the converter and turn the torque down. You don't regret it.

Hello, I liked your video, I bought the same stubby as yours, it can be used with a chrome socket, I thought it was with an impact socket, let me know, thanks
Impact are the prefers socket to use. But in certain situations are chroman is needed.
Use a 4.0 battery or 6.0 battery will brake away the 14mm bolts with the extension
Nice review, wish u tried the 4ah battery on the crank, cam bolts. I've noticed that on the 3/8 fuel wrench the 4.0 battery seems to make it sound faster/more powerful. The 2.0 seems to be a little less power. Nice review overall , I'm still waiting for my stubbys to show up!!! Hopefully today haha

@@HowtoAutomotive I ment ratchet, not wrench, 2557. I noticed a difference, even free spin sound. Keep the reviews coming, tq wrench specs of that stubby would be a cool video. Like I know with my 2767, on big rig lug nuts, once nut touches down, I impact it for 3 sec and it puts them around 470-480ftlb on 3 setting. Just a idea for video if u have the time to see what that stubby is running them down to on settings 2 or 3
It does not look like you use the "black" impact extensions or impact sockets. Have you never broken any of your chrome stuff?
I have the Milwaukee m18 3/8 with the 5amp batteries. How much noticeable weight difference do you feel between the stubby 3/8 and the one I have? I use the m18 every day.

Milwaukee put the rating at 3lb but thats with the 4.0 battery, i belive its 2.3lb or 2.lb4 with the 2.0 battery
Big difference. I just got my stubby and it's way lighter and the m18 battery is bulky unlike the m12"s
