Greetings from Jackson, GA. THANK YOU for this video! I just purchased a 2003 Tahoe and got 1 heck of a deal on it because the owner was tired of throwing parts at it and not fixing it. First thing I had to do is repair the threads on the positive battery bolt (who the heck tears these threads up?) Anyway? chased the threads, bolted both battery cables back in place on the battery and TA-DA! Everything worked....dash lights, console lights...I was ecstatic....until I got home. Shut the truck off and right back to the way it was......Then I sat down and watched your video. A loose ground cable? At the block? Are you kidding me? then went back outside, raised the hood on the Tahoe, reached in and gave the ground cable a tug where your video showed. UNBELIEVABLE! my ground cable just wiggled up and down.
Now I can see why they threw a new starter, new alternator and a new battery at it......and NO ONE even checked for a good, solid ground. I can understand why the system wasn't charging (volt meter read right at 12V) and things acted crazy looking for a clear path to flow through.
1 other thing I saw at the beginning of your video was (5) wires that are part of a bigger harness in the ignition area. (3) wires connect to the ignition key housing/tumbler area. There are (5) wires in this particular bundle: YELLOW, BLACK, RED/white stripe, LIGHT GREEN and BROWN. In your video? you actually unplugged the (3) wire connector and plugged it back together. What I didn't see is where the LIGHT GREEN and BROWN plug into......The reason I ask is because someone broke the connector off the end of those (2) wires in my Tahoe and I can't tell where they belong. I'm guessing that being able to obtain that (1) connector for those (2) wires is not possible? and I'll have to purchase the entire harness (for that area) to make the repair complete. Your knowledge for the correct part number of that harness for this repair would be GREATLY appreciated and? if you could also share with me where in the heck those 2 wires plug into? I know this will end the electrical nightmare this vehicle has suffered.
    Thanks in advance,
    Hyway

been there before with tail light not come on , replace bunch of parts , turn out to be ground wire in trunk not making good contact. I know your effort will help a lot of people. I also am having problems 1999 Chevy van , battery replace and still wont hold charge, turn key nothing , wait a day or two go out at it starts no problem. I also put cut off tie strap, same problem. In morning going to remove bolt of battery ground clean it and gorilla tighten. It makes sense , sometimes it would click like a weak battery and sometimes nothing. Bad part is you cant trust it if will start or not. Great tip! thank you.....

Great video ,great help to people.i started down the same rabbit hole as you.then half way in I came across your video. Helped remind me of a old saying have the kiss approach to it.( Keep it simple stupid) K.I.S.S. in other words start with the simplest ,bacics then work your way up. It worked. simple grounds behind engine attached to transfer case. Just about the tenth thing I've come accross that Chevrolet did that makes no sense!

I'm going to check the ground wire. I replaced 3 starters ,checked ignition and starter relays, steering wheel ignition, but I never knew to check the ground WIRE, and yeap it pretty oily at that same spot just below engine where that ground WIRE goes to.

Good info for sure, I am checking grounds on my 07 Silverado now good thing is all I've purchased so far is a starter. Be surprised how simple that ignition box is, I took it apart its all mechanical / not electrical but of course it directs or stops power. I deal well with mechanical bad with wiring.

My brother's 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 HD has the same problem. Before seeing your video, I had done everything you did and then saw your video! Lol I checked the ground cable and it is tight on the block with no signs of being loose. I am going to take it off and clean it and the area and then try to start it again. If nothing happens I am stuck and not sure what to do other than to take it to a GM repair shop. The stater and the solenoid are good.

I can jump the starter with the key in the on position and it starts and runs.? dont necessarly want to replace the cylinder holding/vat piece unless someone has had the same problem and it solved the problem. Thoughts?

The starting has been intermittent for months. Only thing I have done is replace ignition switch. Im sure i can change it after everything else I've done. Just not sure if that's it. Scanner has been ran no codes. Complete loss on this.

Great overview. I've recently pulled out the ignition system form a 2001 Yukon so it all made sense. Any idea what would cause the key to not release? Shifter works fine and I can start the vehicle, but after that, I can only turn the key back as far as the ACC. I can't get it to turn to the lock position so I can remove the key. It's not good for a battery overnight as you can imagine. Thanks again for the tips!

Your First Consideration would be, if you can still make it to the start position, you can start by pulling the old lock cylinder out, using the old key and replacing it with a new lock cylinder and key!
Your Second Consideration would be that the plastic gearing in the Ignition Housing (the part the lock cylinder fits into) might be kaput. You may have to remove it anyway to get your old cylinder and key out and your new cylinder and key back in!

Battery is good, bit NOTHING gets power. Lights, horn, etc. With key in it has a buzz under dash on drivers side. The buzz stops when turnin the key, temove the key, buzz goes. I had to disconn the battery to stop the buzzing- but if you flip the headlights to on position the buzz quiets or stops. No dash lights, or any lights come on.
I dunno if its a relay or ignition.

    • @jamesz9529
      @jamesz9529 4 роки тому

It almost sounds like an ignition issue. I would wonder if the battery volts still the same for starting requirements? Some of the obvious things that happens with these trucks is the Fuel Pump goes out (Located inside the gas tank, a booger to get to. Six bolts holds the bed on the truck on. Loosen and jack up bed or remove to lift out old tank pump), Starter has a bad field (Or just goes out), or the Battery is being pulled down by some sort of draw (Can check with a meter). Ignition Switch (Starter switch in the wheel column - See my vid on what it looks like - Easy to change out) Sometimes (Rare) the computer goes out and acts up, but not very often. Did you still have enough battery power? The wiring (To/From Starter - Inc. the ground - Rare, but happened to me, see my vid on that one).

Chevy had bad grounds everywhere... especially the one between the body and engine. Run as ground wire from the body to the alternator mount bolt. Abandon the existing one. Creates a ground loop

I have a 02 Silverado. The front end is completely brand new everything. Here's my problem. When I go to start it the starter won't shut off. The truck wants to start but the damn starter won't shut off

Check to see if the starter is binding or shimmed correctly. It sounds like the gear is sticking. You can also spray some grease on the spring return area of the gear shaft helps a little bit too.

Hi i might be having the same problem im not by any means a person who knows anything about trucks bit i have a 4 door 2001 1500 chevy siverado and the starter & battery were replaced the ground was checked to be shure it was ground properly ( the truck has been in one spot for about 2 weeks now ) and when i try to start it it shows signs of wanting to start but its like its not getting enough power what can that be? Thank you and have a good day
Ps. Thanks for your vid it kinda helps me learn a lil

When you check the ground, get underneath and actually find where the grounding strap connects to the block of the motor. And put a socket on it and see if it is real tight (if you haven't already, that is...). Or remove the bolt and clean it and around it too (lots of oil drips down there). The reason why I say this is my truck would start when it was cold. It would kinda struggle, but it would start none the less. However, when the thing heated up, I guess that bolt (metal) expanded and it would lose more of its ground and I would be at the gas pump (or wherever) and could not get it started back. But when we went back to get it (after it had cooled down), it would start, LOL! So, you can see how much of a headache this was to figure out WHAT was going on. Otherwise, you could have a drain on your battery that is something other than this issue. You can do a battery drain check with a meter to see what might be (or what circuit) it could be on. HINT: I would always check the radio, cigarette lighter or towing lights (assessory) circuits first. They are usually prone to be a contributor to circuit drains, esp. with aftermarket radios and bad installs of trailer light hook-ups.

Ground is the most important part of an electrical system. I have a 95 suburban that kept me puzzled for 3 months. It would run great for a few weeks then just quit going down the highwaty. Would sit for a bit and would start and go for ever how long it would go til one day i was going through the woods with it and she went down. Determined i did everything possible in the wioods cuz it would not start. I get rides to the part store back and forth and nothing worked. Pick up coil, coil, distributer cap i was losing it just didnt make sense til i went back the next day and walked up on it and my fuel pump was running but no key in it.🤔 Wth! Couldnt make it go off so i went to pull the fuse and when i moved the fuse box it quit. 🤔 Come to find out testing the box the ground was loose. The fuel pump would run with loose ground but solid ground it would not. I cut the ground and relocated it still driving with not any more pronlem. Was bout 5 years ago

    Try South Main Auto Channel
videos on Chevy look up videos on voltage drop .
Make a long wire thick or use multiple
    Wires to alligator clips
Now you have a jumper wire use that to jump a ground when you're having a problem once the problem resolves found the correct ground
