      @@EricHaugenGuitar. There's a great interview on some podcast Music Makers and Shakers. He's hilarious and down to earth. His los Cubanos Postizos has become a favorite. I was fifteen when Rain Dogs came out and then Franks Wild Years. While most kids were learning Panama and Eruption I was trying to play licks from Hang on St. Christopher. Anyway, your lessons on tone are really helpful as I've been out gigging! Where are you located? Best S

      Yeah, so much of guitar is still stuck in the 80s shred mode. There's so much else to play than scales - emotions, scenes, ideas, etc.
      I'm from NJ, but live down in NC these days.

    Can't thank you enough for transcribing Ribot's classic work with Tom and creating such excellent lessons. Your tone is to die for, by the way. I work almost as hard on nailing your tone as I do learning the actual tune. I find that setting my HOF to LoFi really seems to help. Keep'em comin' !

      I always keep that in mind with my lessons - I try to do both, with emphasis on the latter 😎

    After many years not playing, I bought a guitar and made this outstanding transcription my learning goal. The repeated sections are very helpful but the transition to top speed is a lot more challenging for my clumsy fingers. I wish there was a half speed version, just to get the feel of it. Anyway, thanks for getting me playing(slowly) again.

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  7 років тому

      It's my pleasure Steve! Btw - depending on what device you're watching on, UA-cam lets you slow the speed down. On my desktop, there's a little gear icon on the lower right portion on the vid where you can adjust the playback speed. Good Luck!

    First of all, Eric, you're doing God's work showing your techniques. I really like your approach and tone at the guitar. I just learned this song's solo by ear note by note quite accurately, but realised I have quite a hard time keeping a precise tempo while playing staccato. Do you have any tip about that besides practicing with a metronome? Maybe a specific exercise? Thanks a lot

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  6 років тому +3

      Good question!
      My main advice would be slow and steady wins the race. As guitar players, we always want to see how fast we can do things (I do it to), and that causes us to rush through things. Pull that tempo waaaaaay back, and really lean into each note :-)

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  3 роки тому +1

      Knowing that Marc was heavy in the NJ Jazz scene at the time makes me think that solo was pretty much off the cuff!

      @@EricHaugenGuitar I think that's what I've really taken on board from studying his style, he injects so much jazziness into his blues playing by basing it around chord forms, like a jazz musician would. Whereas in the past I've been tempted just to noodle around in minor pentatonics! This way is so much more musical and structured.

    Eric, is there any theoretical explanation for why the F9 chord moving up the neck works? It literally starts with a major third playing over a minor third harmony and then from just slides up chromatically. Does it just show that total madness works if you play it with confidence?

      +Timo Peltonen Thanks Timo! I have that Mustang wired up with both pickups controlled by the neck position slide switch - makes it way easier to change settings mid-song. The other slide switch does nothing.
      If I remember correctly, I was using the bridge pickup only, running into an Ibanez Ts 808 Reissue, Boss Dm 2 Analog Delay, Hall of Fame Reverb, and then into my Tweed Pro Clone with a Weber 15A150 speaker. Thanks for watching!

    Man, Eric, I finally took the time to get this down. Took about an hour, and then a day to get it smooth. I just can't for the life of me figure out the inversion of the last F chord you play when you do the opening playthrough. Sorry, i feel kinda stupid. But i've worked so hard on this solo I figured I'd get this answer for free lol. While I have you, I've been recommending you as a teach to people near you in Raleigh, not sure if you want new students, but let me know if I should be doing that. But also, after recommending you, I'm kind of mad that I'm not taking classes from you. Hour lessons wouldn't be good for me right now as I have basics to practice before I did that, to maximize later lessons. Do you have a recommendations of how to learn my arpeggios for all basic chords in all inversions, first? I want a fundamental, basic, understanding of arpeggios for major, minor, dominant 7's 7flat5's, half diminished, to basically run the gauntlet, and know their inversions. I'd be happy to pay you if you have material for that or could recommend material. If I have that stuff down already, I feel like lessons in the future wouldn't be spent wasting time on basics. thx in advance for anything you write back. Cheers my friend, learning from your channel is a dream come true. The material, the pace, your take on things and taste. It's the best ever. If you'd rather anwer by email, just let me know and I'll send you a message.

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  5 років тому +2

      If I remember correctly, the last Fm position looks like a Dm up three frets.
      For working on 7th chord arpeggios, I'd recommend putting small octave versions in the context of ii V I progressions - that's what I usually do with my students and it's pretty fun!

      For the tempo/time signature, it'd try something around 134bmp with swing eighth notes.
