One of the main benefits of a speed square is that it's a very handy quick fence for circular saw cuts at 90 and 45 degrees. Set the square down on the board, put the saw blade on/next to the line and slide the square/fence over and make your cut. Can also be used for a hand saw
Czech Republic baby 😁😁😁 thanks for lots usefull informatin on your channel 😃
Hungarian subscriber here!
Thank you so much for your hard work showing us your knowledge about woodworking. Awesome content.
I wish all the best for you and your family.
Hungary ^^ good job on explain things easy. Keep up the great work!
Carpenter here, not a woodworker. Do NOT buy a used framing square because they are often bent and not square. They aren't too expensive and if you are building a roof or stairs they are well worth the money.
Good point! A quick trick for checking square is marking a line, flipping the square over, and seeing if it lines up exactly or if the square isn't parallel anymore.
You can always re square the framing square with a punch and hammer
@@spencerruthman8065that's a good tip, I never knew that could be done. I just learned it recently too. Good looking out 💯😁
Hi Rex - I’m a Brit living in Australia, so my allegiance to the flag depends on who is winning the cricket or rugby! Would be happy to see either flag on your wall. I have a couple of projects in mind for my workshop - a Union Flag (Union Jack) made of three different shades of wood, and a map of Australia, with each of the states and territories again in a different shade of wood. All made from reclaimed pallet wood, of course 😁😉
Keep up the great videos
Hola Rex, gracias por los consejos. Saludos desde Chile 🇨🇱
Trinidad and Tobago. And I can see my flag on the sheets you held up!
I am from the Netherlands, learning a lot from your video's.
Hello from Brasil! 🇧🇷
See you on patreons soon as possible! Great job, Rex! Keep going!
Dear Rex, I am from Berlin, Germany. About two years ago I started to get interested in wood work, and I started watching a huge amount of youtube videos - and I learned a lot from them. Your channel is in my view the best combination of teaching, story telling and having fun! THANK YOU for your great effort to produce such high quality and instructive videos! I only have a small chamber for wood working - only 6 or 7 square meters - and use only a few electric tools: a screw driver, a stiching saw and sometimes a sanding tool. All other works I do manually. And I bought most of my (used) tools on ebay. Thus, your ideas and recommendations are really worthy for me. Thanks again!
I'm in berlin too! I kind of have a similar "shop" although I shouldn't dare call it that way. I also started recently, and although it's not my main activity, sometimes I think it could be interesting to find some contact to join forces with, perhaps for a laid back market project or simply friendly exchange of ideas or materials.
As someone who spent a year in Berlin (and frankly misses it... hopefully I'll be back one day), I'm glad to see it represented (even though I'm currently in the states). :) I look forward to seeing the 🇩🇪 on the wall at some point (even though I know there's a very different relationship to flags there than what we have here... heh.)
Hi,
i use LEGO to squrare. It is so flexibel to use.
Cosmic Speed That is such a good idea! I'm going to put a range of sizes together tomorrow!
What a great idea.
Wow. that is amazing idea :)
mind blown. this could really work
That's brilliant!
Another South African viewer here. I really enjoy the woodworking for humans videos - they're awesome! Keep up the great work!
From the rainy land of Ireland. Love the videos. Really enjoy the top quality and in depth explanations. Looking forward to see this channel grow. Thanks 👍🏻
Hello from Scotland! 🏴 I recently bought a 6" combination square on your recommendation, though my most used one is an 8" Stanley try square.
A useful side video would be how to accurately mark out lines, such as going all around a 2×4, and knowing how much to compensate for pencil lead thickness.
Use a mechanical pencil, that eliminates the size discrepancies, greetings from near Airdrie 😜
I'm living in the country formerly known as America. Great video! Keep it up!
Watching all your videos from SERBIA. It's first flag on one of your printed flag pages :) I would like to see it on flag board in future videos. Thanks.
Hi from The Netherlands 🇳🇱 Keep up the interesting and informative videos!

Greetings from the UK 🇬🇧. Really learning a lot from you videos. I unfortunately don’t have a large work area but really want one having seen some of the things you do. Keep the videos coming. Oh, have you done any videos on wood grain and how to spot if you are working against it. Also what is reversing grain (I think that’s the name), and what are the pitfalls of planing end grain?
Hey Rex, watching from Belgium here. love your videos. i'm still a powertool guy but getting really interested in handtool woodworking. i feel like i have so much to learn so thanks for explaining everything so clearly👍
Thankyou from Germany! With best regards from the Swabian Country.
Schwobaländle represent! 🙋♂️😁
Hey Rex, another mexican here working on his first workbench... getting a good try square first thing tomorrow for checking the big pieces, great video
United kingdom, union Jack. 🇬🇧
leslie james, fact of the day, did you know it’s only called the Union Jack if it is on a boat. If it’s not on a boat it’s called the union flag.
@@MrBishbashbosh2012 In modern use either Union Jack or Union Flag is acceptable regardless of where it's flown.
Extra fact, historically that is the case also, although the term jack has naval origins.
. . . . . or known as the "The Butcher's Apron" to many across the world :-)
the first and by now the best woodworking chanel for me. Watching you from Ukraine.
I am Varun from India. Thank you for the valuable information. Especially the Engineering Square.
Greetings from Mexico....great channel I enjoy each one of your videos
Poland! :) And about squares, my idea for best precision square is the square not from a fancy brand, but with a norm. In Europe it is DIN 875 (even lowest precision grade 2 is super precise). You can buy made in Europe square with angle precision of 0,03 mm (1/2-1/3 of human hair) for 10$. Way more precise than 99,999% of squares and cheaper than any "woodworker brand" square.
Can you suggest one on the US Amzon?
Australia 🇦🇺 just something quick if you are looking for a try squares if you look for an older Brown and Sharp they have adjustment grub screws to keep them accurate for a lifetime
Hey Rex!!! I'm watching you from Chileeee! Your videos are super educational, keep doing the good work :)
Hello from France !
Hand tools are more accessible for small workshop. And low Noise. Very important when you live in big town, with neighborhood.
It is the sharpening that is the most difficult step to obtain good results and make the handtool really usable.
Norway. Ceep on with you´re informative videos! You Rock! :)
Hi Rex, this is The Netherlands, by far you are the best teacher on UA-cam! Thank you so much for your videos . I am new at woodworking and love making things by your example.

Hi Rex,
I am watching from Scotland currently part of the UK. I am a retired wooden boatbuilder and own most of the old tools, especially wooden tools, some of them made many years ago and still in good “fettle”. I admire your style and find you very entertaining. Keep it up !

'Currently part of the UK'.... since 1707. Longer in the UK than the US has been out of the Empire.
As far as combination squares - Older Starrett, Brown & Sharpe, Lufkin brands will serve you quite well and can be inexpensive. Rex - You missed a how-to "Checking a square for square!"
Just fyi - Brown & Sharpe is now a part of Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence - a company 5 minutes walk from where I live :)
refer to the essential craftman for checking squars and how to bring them back with a little peen
@@Steve_1401 Operative word - "Older" - The ones that read "Providence R. I." - I'm just shy of 65 and mine is older than I am. I'm sure that old B&S tools are as much competition for their new tools as it is for Starrett.
Thank you, Rex, for great videos! Warmest greetings from Ukraine!

recently found your channel. good stuff. From belgium here
Watching grom Poland. Great job Rex.
I find I need a couple of adjustable squares, because when using them for marking, I often alternate between a few measurements and keep adjusting back and forth between them leads to inaccuracies.. UK here for the sticker wall! :-)
I am enjoying the heck out of your series, watching from the Philippines! It's More Fun in the Philippines!

Прыветанне from Belarus! Thank you for your work!
Greetings from Romania. What's your take on calipers in woodworking? I as an engineer that likes to tinker with mechanical stuff (engines, cars, etc) will always have a vernier caliper in my pocket. And more often i use it for woodworking as well for small enough dimensions like tenons. (also it's a decent scribe tool and very accurate)
I use vernier caliper instead of digital or dial caliper because the vernier one is the most robust and the thinnest. I like to have my caliper in my bag next to the notebook, phone, laptop, etc and don't like to find a dead battery or a shaken needle in the dial, or a cracked lens on the dial.. so vernier for me.
I have a plastic one ($2 @ Harbor Freight in the US) I use for drill bits all the time. No dead batteries to worry about
I think that calipers and dividers are essential to the serious craftsperson.
Vernier calipers are awesome, I think more woodworkers would use them if they used them in a more day-to-day setting / work like an engineer would.

Really enjoy and appreciate your channels. Modified your $30.00 bench with straight doubled 2x4s, splurged on a one inch threaded rod, washer and nut and added a leg vice catty corner to the crochet. I drilled the chop before champhering to allow for dogs. Built two minis to match to help support sheet stock. Still have a few cutoffs left. Wahoooo!

Greetings from the homeland of precision: Germany. Although there are a bunch of great, precise tool and measurement makers here, you‘re absolutely right there‘s on brand to compare to Starrett for combination squares. Hard to get them used on a flea market, though.
Greetings from Poland and thanks for great content :-)
+1 :)
